You feeling this episode? Send us a text!In this episode we're discussing how the 1970s Blaxploitation era redefined the art of dating. It passed down the notion that dating is mere transactional and that if a man spends money on a date then he is owed a woman's body. Well, that doesn't get us to a lasting relationship with that mindset now does it? We have to return that notion back to the 70s on BOTH ENDS. Dating is just that "to go on a date". It is neither transactional or sexual. How the hell are you both supposed to know each other if one wants sex, throwing money, and talking all about self and the other is begging for an upkeep and talking all about self? We get absolutely nowhere. We are redlining past the days between true chivalry and self exploitation. Reel it back and tune in. Support the show
Warning: this episode contains mentions of baby loss. Three years ago, we brought you the story of a Nigerian fishing community suing Shell in UK courts over oil spills. This year marks 10 years since their battle began, and the year it finally goes to trial. The Niger Delta is one of the ten most important wetland ecosystems in the world, home to some 31 million people. But the river that sustains so many lives of so many species has become poisoned over decades by oil. Environmental justice is a long and winding road, but communities are standing firm in their bids to hold the world's most powerful corporations to account. They rely on media coverage to keep their fights in the limelight, yet they often struggle to be seen. Why is that? In this episode, we are joined by Lazarus Tamana, UK president of the Movement For The Survival of The Ogoni People , and Dr Emem Okon, Executive Director of community-led NGO Kebetkache Women Development & Resource Centre. They help us unpick the media's coverage of the climate crisis - examining undisclosed relationships between news outlets and corporations, a failure to understand national vs. ‘World' news, and telling choices of media language. Today's episode is about "Monks: The Transatlantic Feedback", from 2006, directed by Dietmar Post and Lucia Palacios. Our guest today is Evan Laffer of the Jokermen podcast and media empire. This is Evan's second Rock Docs appearance, having previously joined us to discuss "Bob Dylan: 1978-1989 - Both Ends of the Rainbow" with his fellow Jokerman Ian Grant. The movie is about the pioneering art-rock band The Monks, who were comprised of five Americans who met while serving in the U.S. Army in Germany in the early 1960s. They formed a beat group called The Torquays and then connected with some mysterious German businessmen who convinced them to fully reform their sound and dress like monks, including the "Friar Tuck" style hairdo, shaved on the top. They were to be Monks at all times, to always be sexy, and avoid being Torquays. The Monks' music and ethos was unlike any band at the time, and nobody has come close to copying them. The film sometimes raises more questions than it answers, but that's appropriate for a band that is steeped in mystery.

--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/africast/message
This week on the podcast, just call us Lumière-- because we're watching the Power Rangers Dino Thunder episode "Burning at Both Ends"! In sunset important or not? Who gets caught out in a 12-stroke lie? And... could this somehow actually be the most convoluted, nonsensical "plan" in the history of the entire franchise?
What is it like to work on environmental and human rights issues from both ends, so from both the Global South (or majority world) and the Global North? And not to work *for* but *with* global organisations that are seeking justice, pointing out that those in power have to be more inclusive? For these next two episodes we are switching to English, as Wouter Mulders is joined by DRIFT colleague Neha Mungekar. First, we are sitting down with Daniëlle Hirsch. She is the director of Both ENDS, a Netherlands-based environmental and human rights organization devoted to funding, knowledge-sharing and policy work within a large global network of civil society actors. If Dutch pension funds invest in a Ugandan oil pipeline that spells tragedy for local communities and a liveable planet, Both ENDS connects Ugandan experiences with Dutch conversations. And Daniëlle also speaks of campaigning with indigenous leader and environmental activist Berta Cáceres against Dutch development bank FMO's activities in Honduras. Sadly, Berta was killed. And though it may not be what researchers like to hear, Daniëlle doesn't define justice as such in her work. Instead, she is fiercely devoted to the process. Do we organize processes to share power? Are enough ‘powerless' voices included to ensure suffering stops? And why does the Netherlands have such a specific ‘do-gooder' self-image on the global stage?Handy links:Both ENDS website: https://www.bothends.org/en/Guardian photo journalism on Uganda's East Africa Oil Pipeline: https://www.theguardian.com/global-development/gallery/2023/feb/24/counting-the-cost-of-ugandas-east-africa-oil-pipeline Slain Honduran activist's daughter seeks criminal probe (Al Jazeera): https://www.aljazeera.com/economy/2022/7/18/slain-honduran-activists-daughter-seeks-criminal-probeFor more transition know-how and how-to, please go to https://drift.eur.nl Thanks to: Audrey Wientjes for voice-over, Marius Kooij for editing, Igno Notermans for producing, Walvisnest for music, Lieven Heeremans for all sorts of advice and all our DRIFT colleagues for support and inspiration.
Episode Notes This episode is about the tension between water as a source of profit and water as a basic human right. After all, if clean water has to be profitable, some people, lots of people, are sure to lose out. As the director of UN Habitat, Maimounah Mohd Sharif is dedicated to helping the global south get access to clean water and sanitation. Do we need big business to build the big infrastructure that brings clean water to everyone? Thad Pawlowski of Columbia University and ‘constructive activist' Murtah Shannon of Both Ends say: absolutely not. This show is about climate justice. That's why this fifth episode of Water Talks is called: Too Unequal.

What to listen for:In today's episode, Stacy, Robin, and Crystal talk about overcoming imposter syndrome as a dog trainer, with a particular focus on what it means to “own” your training methodology.According to our hosts, a great trainer is able to package existing concepts into a cohesive framework that not only can be applied, but also adjusted on a dog-to-dog and team-to-team basis.Put another way, the lessons you teach as a trainer in 2023 are almost never wholly original, but what you own is the way you synthesize different ideas and the unique spin you put on them as you teach those lessons!Key Topics:Why dog trainers don't tend to look outside their discipline (05:25)Synthesizing training concepts to make them your own (10:42)Approaching dog training with curiosity (19:58)Why coaches should never ask their students “why” (24:01)From “soft” skills to “power” skills (29:14)Getting through to your dog (36:07)The line between making something your own and plagiarism as a trainer (41:36)What to do if you have no one to train with or learn from (49:32)Takeaways (53:34)Resources:K9 Detection Collaborative Jan 2023 Roundtable Zoom WebinarBullet Proof Skills for Both Ends of the Leash (Stacy's course mentioned in episode)Don't Feed the Elephants!
Laten we beginnen…

Ahead of our next forum on how business can tackle deforestation, we held a webinar addressing audit integrity in the palm oil industry. In their recent report “Who watches the watchmen”, the Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA) and its research partner Grassroots, highlight third party auditors that are carrying out methodologically flawed fieldwork and producing substandard, biased reports that fail to identify and mitigate unsustainable practices by oil palm companies. The report argues that a lack of clear, mandatory, and enforceable guidelines has allowed auditors to omit or disguise serious flaws in the operations of plantation companies and in some cases even to collude with plantation companies to disguise violations of the RSPO standard. In response to the report, the RSPO has established a task force to ensure full implementation of “quality, oversight and credibility of RSPO assessments”. Our webinar will debate the need for reform of the RSPO system, to provide palm oil growers and auditors with clear, mandatory, and enforceable guidelines that will help auditors to do a better job. Speaking are: Jago Wadley, senior forest campaigner, Environmental Investigation Agency Scott Poynton, founder, TFT Paul Wolvekamp, deputy director, Both ENDS, board member of RSPO Andrew Ng, founder, Grassroots Moderator: Ian Welsh, publishing director, Innovation Forum
