Barry and Abigail discuss Christmas Cheers by Straight No Chaser and sample Spotted Cow and Moon Man from New Glarus Brewing Co. in New Glarus, Wisconsin, and Pickle Tickle from Barn Town Brewing in West Des Moines, Iowa. Listen to the original ¿Dónde Esta Santa Claus? by Augie Rios Barry compared the harmonies in I'll Be Home for Christmas to the harmonies in Auld Lang Syne by The Beach Boys (who were in turn inspired by The Lettermen's harmonies). We played the original Hey Santa! by The Brian Setzer Orchestra. Read the story behind the writing of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. The definitive version of You're a Mean One, Mister Grinch for Barry is The Whirling Dervishes' version, whereas for Abigail, it is the full version from the original TV special, sung by Thurl Ravenscroft. We compared Straight No Chaser's version of O Holy Night to the Tracy Chapman version and the Céline Dion version. Read more about the Christmas pickle tradition! We confirmed that “upsot” is indeed in the original lyrics of Jingle Bells! We also played a little bit of our favorite version of the song, by Bing Crosby and The Andrews Sisters. Who Spiked the Eggnog? is only Abigail's second-favorite eggnog-based Christmas song, after Eggnogorant by Terry Anderson & The Olympic Ass-Kickin Team, which you can hear on our first-ever Christmas bonus episode from 2021, Bonus: Greet the Hummels! Original Songs by Friends of the Pod! We played a bit of Straight No Chaser's version of Carol of the Bells. Up next… Who's Next by The Who, submitted to our Jukebox by Todd Sider. This episode, our Season 5 opener, is scheduled to drop on March 7, 2025. Jingles are by our friend Pete Coe. Visit Anosmia Awareness for more information on Barry's condition. What's the right soundtrack for barreling down a highway in pursuit -- or being pursued -- in your very own General Lee? Dave & Caleb lay out the criteria, buckle in, and gun it to 95 with The Prodigy's Fat of the Land and The Reverend Horton Heat's It's Martini Time! Two albums from a golden era of the 90s when, for one shining moment, electronica and swing music improbably had its grips around our collective imagination. Plus, the single scariest moment of young Dave's life. Also, what we're listening to this week, including a band we love with the most unfortunate name. In the late '90s, third-wave ska broke across the American alternative music scene like a tsunami. In sweaty clubs across the nation, kids danced themselves dehydrated to the peppy rhythms and punchy horns of bands like The Mighty Mighty Bosstones and Reel Big Fish. As ska caught fire, a swing revival brought even more sharp-dressed, brass-packing bands to national attention. Kenneth Partridge's Hell of a Hat: The Rise of '90s Ska and Swing (Pennsylvania State UP, 2021) dives deep into this unique musical moment. Prior to invading the Billboard charts and MTV, ska thrived from Orange County, California, to NYC, where Moon Ska Records had eager rude girls and boys snapping up every release. On the swing tip, retro pioneers like Royal Crown Revue had fans doing the jump, jive, and wail long before The Brian Setzer Orchestra resurrected the Louis Prima joint. Drawing on interviews with heavyweights like the Bosstones, Sublime, Less Than Jake, and Cherry Poppin' Daddies—as well as underground heroes like Mustard Plug, The Slackers, Hepcat, and The New Morty Show—Kenneth Partridge argues that the relative economic prosperity and general optimism of the late '90s created the perfect environment for fast, danceable music that—with some notable exceptions—tended to avoid political commentary. An homage to a time when plaids and skankin' were king and doing the jitterbug in your best suit was so money, Hell of a Hat is an inside look at '90s ska, swing, and the loud noises of an era when America was dreaming and didn't even know it. Looking for the bands Partridge didn't get to highlight in the book? You can find his writing about them on his Substack. Season's Greetings! This week on the podcast we bring you a Christmas movie soundtrack like no other. It's the soundtrack to the 1996 Christmas comedy Jingle All The Way! Arnold Schwarzenegger goes toe to toe with Sinbad in a race to find their kids the last Turboman doll in the city. Along the way we meet black market Santas, Martin Mull in a ponytail, and a reindeer named Ted! And the soundtrack is an interesting beast, too. Half of it feels like a glimpse into a world where The Brian Setzer Orchestra completely scored the film from start to finish. The other half is populated by a handful of holiday standards you definitely know and love. It's a madcap tug of war in the name of 90s excess. Who wins? Join us and let's find out together! SHOW NOTES: Jingle All The Way is available to stream here SEE ALSO: Jingle All The Way on Christmas Creeps DELETED SCENE: "The Little Boy That Santa Clause Forgot" Check out Jingle Bell Rocks today! October 12, 2017 My next guest started taking drum lessons at just 4 years old: Bernie Dresel! Growing up in western Pennsylvania getting a healthy diet of polka and hillbilly music and eventually moving onto to study classical percussion and music education at the Eastman School of Music, Bernie has become one of the most in-demand recording and live drummers on the planet. We talk about the challenges of breaking into the music business today and the patience that is required, how his classical percussion and drumset chops lead to more opportunities, the level of sight reading ability needed to be a studio musician, how music brings humanity to cartoons and movies, the impact of Buddy Rich, performing on the tv special celebrating Frank Sinatra's 80th, and the value of not using click tracks. Bernie Dresel has been one of the busiest studio and live musicians in the world as both a drummer and percussionist since moving to Los Angeles in 1983 after graduating from the prestigious Eastman School of Music. He has traveled the world, occupying the coveted drum chair for Grammy Award-winning Gordon Goodwin's Big Phat Band since its inception in 1999. And also, for an overlapping 15 years (1992 to 2006), he was the drummer for the multi-Grammy Award-winning Brian Setzer Orchestra, selling close to 4 million records. Modern Drummer magazine's readers' poll named Bernie “Best Big Band Drummer” and Drum! Magazine has put him on their list of “53 Drummers Who Made a Difference in the '90s” as well as honoring him with a Drummie® for Best Big Band Drummer. Bernie Dresel' s jazz orchestra, The BBB, is without question one of Los Angeles' most exciting large jazz ensembles, if not on the planet. It is one of the most innovative and original hard-swinging large jazz ensembles ever. The BBB provides potent testimony to the sheer exhilaration of big band jazz...a combination of intense swing and fiery soloing, as well as tight ensemble playing, powered by Bernie Dresel's extraordinary drumming talents.
Nicole covers the day's news and info, then looks back. For some reason, John Melendez (Stuttering John from the Howard Stern Show) joins in, and Nicole turns the tables and asks him pointed questions. We segue into the weekend with an amazing 1996 radio appearance at KSCA from the Brian Setzer Orchestra
