AI21 Labs. Paging Gwern or anyone else who can shed light on the current state of the AI market - I have several questions. Since the release of ChatGPT, at least 17 companies, according to the LMSYS Chatbot Arena Leaderboard, have developed AI models that outperform it. These companies include Anthropic, NexusFlow, Microsoft, Mistral, Alibaba, Hugging Face, Google, Reka AI, Cohere, Meta, 01 AI, AI21 Labs, Zhipu AI, Nvidia, DeepSeek, and xAI. Since GPT-4's launch, 15 different companies have reportedly created AI models that are smarter than GPT-4. Among them are Reka AI, Meta, AI21 Labs, DeepSeek AI, Anthropic, Alibaba, Zhipu, Google, Cohere, Nvidia, 01 AI, NexusFlow, Mistral, and xAI. Twitter AI (xAI), which seemingly had no prior history of strong AI engineering, with a small team and limited resources, has somehow built the third smartest AI in the world, apparently on par with the very best from OpenAI. The top AI image generator, Flux AI, which is considered superior to the offerings from OpenAI and Google, has no Wikipedia page, barely any information available online, and seemingly almost no employees. The next best in class, Midjourney and Stable Diffusion, also operate with surprisingly small teams and limited resources. I have to admit, I find this all quite confusing. I expected companies with significant experience and investment in AI to be miles ahead of the competition. I also assumed that any new competitors would be well-funded and dedicated to catching up with the established leaders. Understanding these dynamics seems important because they influence the merits of things like a potential pause in AI development or the ability of China to outcompete the USA in AI. Moreover, as someone with general market interests, the valuations of some of these companies seem potentially quite off. So here are my questions: 1. Are the historically leading AI organizations - OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google - holding back their best models, making it appear as though there's more parity in the market than there actually is? 2. Is this apparent parity due to a mass exodus of employees from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google to other companies, resulting in the diffusion of "secret sauce" ideas across the industry? 3. Does this parity exist because other companies are simply piggybacking on Meta's open-source AI model, which was made possible by Meta's massive compute resources? Now, by fine-tuning this model, can other companies quickly create models comparable to the best? 4. Is it plausible that once LLMs were validated and the core idea spread, it became surprisingly simple to build, allowing any company to quickly reach the frontier? 5. Are AI image generators just really simple to develop but lack substantial economic reward, leading large companies to invest minimal resources into them? 6. Could it be that legal challenges in building AI are so significant that big companies are hesitant to fully invest, making it appear as if smaller companies are outperforming them? 7. And finally, why is OpenAI so valuable if it's apparently so easy for other companies to build comparable tech? Conversely, why are these no name companies making leading LLMs not valued higher? Of course, the answer is likely a mix of the factors mentioned above, but it would be very helpful if someone could clearly explain the structures affecting the dynamics highlighted here. In this episode, Avishai sits down with AI pioneer Yoav Shoham. Yoav was a professor of computer science at Stanford for 28 years, where he was the director of the AI Lab. He is also a serial entrepreneur and has founded various companies across industries. Most recently, he co-founded AI21 labs. AI21 Labs aims to take AI to the next level and builds LLMs for enterprises that make machines thought partners. Join him and Avishai for a great discussion, and hear why Yoav doesn't believe Gen AI truly exists, AI21's mission, and his vision for the future. The AI winter is over. AI is at the top of everyone's mind today, but it has existed for decades. Yoav experienced the ‘AI Winter,' a period during the 1990s when interest and funding in AI dropped. Yoav says that the effects of the winter have worn off, and that the learnings and changes from the period and beyond have helped us reach the AI boom of today. Lots of experiments, little deployment. Yoav says that while there is mass experimentation with AI, there is much less deployment of the technology. Proving the ROI of AI is something companies like AI21 must do to encourage uptake from large enterprises. Trust is key. Yoav identifies that reliability, predictability and explainability are key for LLMs. These models often don't know when or why they are wrong. Ensuring that we can trust these models is key to their progression and adoption. Interested in further exploring the impact of GenAI? Tune in to Your Career: Is it Choice or Chance? The Generative AI News (GAIN) rundown for April 13, 2023, included some breaking news on Amazon Bedrock, the new service competing directly with OpenAI and Microsoft's Azure AI services. We also discussed Twitter's generative AI ambitions, HuggingGPT, a positive generative AI launch from MailChimp and a lackluster implementation by Expedia, OpenAI's bug bounty, the Italy ChatGPT saga, a deepfake of Charles Barkley, Alibab's everything AI bot, and a bit more. Bret Kinsella (that's me) hosted again this week with my Voicebot.ai colleague Eric Schwartz. The top stories in generative AI land this week include: Amazon Takes on OpenAI & Microsoft A multivendor Bedrock approach: Amazon Bedrock now offers easy access to many generative AI models, including AI21 Labs, Anthropic, Stability AI, and Titan. Copilot gets a competitor: Amazon's CodeWhisperer, a text-to-code generator, is now general availability and free. GitHub Copilot may have a market share lead with 400,000 paying subscribers, but free is a good way to accumulate users. Elon Musk Goes Shopping Twitter and Generative AI: Elon Musk has reportedly purchased 10,000 GPUs after he was out recruiting some well-known AI researchers. So, why did he want OpenAI and others to pause their AI research? We'll see. Musk may want Twitter to be an “everything app,” and generative AI would be a key element. Or, he may just want advertisers to have a useful feature. HuggingGPT and Multi-Model Systems Microsoft's latest take on hybrid AI: Microsoft researchers released a paper and a GitHub repository with a new multi-model LLM controller (orchestrator) that can govern access to a variety of AI models for a single interface called HuggingGPT. We will see more of these multi-model services. MailChimp Gets AI Copywriter Building on the core product: MailChimp added AI writing capabilities via an OpenAI integration. It looks like a clean, on-point generative AI feature. There is no extra cost for the feature right now, but at what point will the companies start passing along the model inference costs to users? Expedia Misses the Plot Generating misperception: Expedia also announced some new generative AI features, but it actually only enables you to learn more about hotels and activities. You can't actually book a flight or hotel even though the press release language was cleverly written to suggest there is more there than travel review search. Speaking of search, the new GPT-4-powered Bing not only does a better job of trip planning and research, but it also enables you to book a flight and hotel. Alibaba Goes for Everything A generative cornucopia: Alibaba announced its new generative AI solution. The ChatGPT competitor is called Tongyi Qianwen. It is integrated into the Tmall Genie assistant (i.e., Alibaba's voice assistant), takes meeting notes, writes emails, and creates business documents. It can also help you shop and the company says it supports both Chinese and English. OpenAI Bug$ Out Crowdsourcing security vulnerabilities: OpenAI launched a new Bug Bounty program which will pay out between $200 - $20,000 to developers that find “vulnerabilities, bugs, or security flaws.” This follows OpenAI's highly publicized security vulnerability and subsequent investigations by privacy regulators in Italy and Canada. FanDuel Goes Deep A young Charles Barkley pitches sports gambling: FanDuel has a new commercial that includes a real-life Charles Barkley and a deepfake of his younger self. Deepfakes are becoming mainstream. Or, maybe they already are. The show was originally broadcast live on YouTube and LinkedIn, and we also added it to the Voicebot Podcast for your convenience. You can see the video here on YouTube.

AI news this week Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most dynamic and exciting fields of technology today. Every week, there are new developments, breakthroughs and challenges that shape the future of AI. Here are some of the top stories of this week: - OpenAI attracts deep-pocketed rivals in Anthropic and Musk: OpenAI, the research organization behind GPT-3 and other generative AI models, is facing competition from two new ventures: Anthropic, a stealthy startup founded by former OpenAI researchers and backed by Reid Hoffman; and a mysterious project led by Elon Musk, who co-founded OpenAI but left its board in 2018. Both rivals are reportedly working on large-scale AI systems that could rival or surpass GPT-3 in natural language understanding and generation. - Amazon launches Bedrock, a service to build generative AI apps: Amazon Web Services (AWS) announced Bedrock, a new service that allows customers to build generative AI applications using pretrained models from startups such as AI21 Labs, Hugging Face and Cohere. Bedrock aims to lower the barriers to entry for developers who want to leverage the power of generative AI without having to train their own models or deal with complex infrastructure. - AI newsreader debuts in China, sparks debate on human touch: A chatbot named Xiaoice, developed by Microsoft and a Chinese company, has become the first AI newsreader to host a live TV show in China. Xiaoice can interact with viewers, answer questions and generate natural-sounding speech based on text inputs. However, some critics argue that AI newsreaders lack the human touch and empathy that real journalists have, and may pose ethical and social risks. - CMU teaches a robot dog to walk a balance beam: Researchers from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) have developed a novel method to teach a robot dog to walk on a narrow balance beam. The method uses reinforcement learning, a technique that trains an agent to learn from trial and error, and incorporates prior knowledge about the dynamics of the robot and the environment. The researchers claim that their method can enable more agile and robust locomotion for legged robots in challenging terrains. - Robot or human teacher? Kids' preferences vary by age and task: A study by researchers from MIT and Harvard University has explored how children of different ages prefer to learn from robots versus humans. The study involved 120 children aged 4 to 11 who interacted with either a robot or a human teacher on various tasks such as math problems, storytelling and drawing. The results showed that younger children preferred robots for math and drawing tasks, while older children preferred humans for storytelling tasks. The researchers suggest that robots could be designed to adapt to children's preferences and needs based on their age and task. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/dwight-allen/message

This episode features conversations with two experts who have helped train and release models that can recognize, predict, and generate human language on the basis of very large text-based data sets. First is an excerpt of my conversation with Connor Leahy, AI Researcher at Aleph Alpha GmbH, and founding member of EleutherAI, (pronounced “ee-luther”) a collective of researchers and engineers building resources and models for researchers who work on natural language models. Next up is an excerpt from a recent conversation with Yoav Shoham, co-founder of AI21 Labs, creators of the largest language model available to developers. להאזנה באתר: frnkl.co/blog-podcast/221-ori-goshen

For the better part of a year, OpenAI's GPT-3 has remained among the largest AI language models ever created, if not the largest of its kind. Via an API, people have used it to automatically write emails and articles, summarize text, compose poetry and recipes, create website layouts, and generate code for deep learning in Python. But an AI lab based in Tel Aviv, Israel — AI21 Labs — says it's planning to release a larger model and make it available via a service, with the idea being to challenge OpenAI's dominance in the “natural language processing-as-a-service” field.
