“There's only one way to express what music gives me. It gives me purpose, it gives me point. When I sing, I can just be me” -Jonathan Antoine, 26 year old tenor from the UK. When Jonathan sings, it's immediately apparent you are hearing one of the best voices in the world. The quality, feeling and authenticity that he puts into his performances reaches out and draws you into the music. Depending on the theme of the current serenade, he has you feeling the thrill of new love, brokenhearted, grieving, hopeful and more. From Puccini to Leonard Cohen, Jonathan sings a diverse repertoire, bringing many musical tastes together and audiences appreciate all. Most initially learned of Jonathan Antoine from the 2012 Britain's Got Talent series where he sang in a duo called Jonathan and Charlotte. The emotional and inspiring audition, consecutive semi-final and final performances had the UK viewers going wild. With the media frenzy that followed the audition airing, it was the beginning of a whirlwind of television appearances and a documentary, performances all over Europe as well as creating the first album, Together, all at the age of 17. A second album, Perhaps Love followed, containing solos from each artist, hinting that separate careers were approaching. The duo did part, each with their own contract to pursue individual aspirations and Jonathan's debut solo album, Tenore, was released in October 2014. The much anticipated album showcased Jonathan's growth and hard work training his voice. It contains classics such as La Donna e Mobile, Panis Angelicus, and a must-sing tribute to Mario Lanza with Be My Love to name but a few. Just before release date, Jonathan was invited to perform in the finale concert of the month-long iTunes festival held at the Roundhouse in London, as Placido Domingo's guest. At the ripe age of 19, he had his first number one charting classical album. 2014 also found Jonathan performing for the first time in the USA. David Foster whisked him away to perform at the 20th anniversary Muhammad Ali's Celebrity Fight Night- an incredible experience for such a worthy cause. At another performance in Florida, a highlight was singing the Beatles' Hey Jude with Sting, Ne-Yo, Adam Levine and Tessanne Chin. https://www.jonathanantoinemusic.com/ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zybog6uIa1M

When Jonathan fell to the ground, the only thing he could think to do was to somehow shield his head from the blows and kicks coming from all directions, his reflexes automatically kicking in as he tried to protect himself from a murderous regime, whose soldiers are not above beating people to death in the streets in broad daylight. Jonathan's “crime” was peacefully protesting against the military coup. He was eventually taken to notorious Insein Prison—a name infamous for the decades of torture and death that have occurred within its walls. He was placed in a large, windowless cell with a capacity for about 100 people. And yet, he was one of the more fortunate ones, by far. After he had been arrested, soldiers began to employ more extreme forms of violence against protestors, and in prison he saw some fellow prisoners emerge from interrogation sessions bloodied and beaten to a pulp. Fortunately, this type of punishment was never meted out to him personally, and his eventual 3-year sentence ended up being commuted to less than a month. Reflecting on his experience, one of Jonathan's insights center on the power of unity. He notes that the Tatmadaw has always ruled by creating division and distrust among the different ethnic and religious groups, but like in prison where he developed deep friendships with people of different backgrounds, he realized that if the Burmese population became more unified, it would help defeat the “divide and conquer” tactics of the military. Jonathan also reflected on his own Buddhist background. Today he is trying to get back to the roots of the practice, recalling the value of his time as a monk, and returning to the basic teachings of mindfulness which he finds refreshes him while stabilizing his mind. On this episode Zarela and Aarón are thrilled to present another parent-child duo who dedicate their lives to preserving their culture through food. Juan and Jonathan Zaragoza’s family-run Chicago restaurant Birria Zaragoza is known as the best birria in Chicago and, according to Aarón, Chicago is the best Mexican food town in the country. Juan started making birria at his restaurant in 2007, and since then he’s garnered national attention for his version of the Jalisco comfort food. Their birria is very unique. It's made with goat that’s marinated in ancho-based mole, then combined with a tomato-base consomé and roasted overnight in lard for a crispy tender meat that The Infatuation declared the “best goat tacos” anywhere. Juan’s son Jonathan learned how to make birria from his dad at age 12 in a wood burning oven built by his father and grandfather. When Jonathan is not making birria, he’s running El Oso (“the bear” in Spanish and Jonathan’s childhood nickname), a Chicago pop-up combining traditional Mexican cuisine and local midwest ingredients all cooked over a wood-burning stove. Listen in for this heartwarming conversation between two families striving to live the American dream while promoting authentic Mexican culture. Not only have Brad’s daughters started back at in-person school, but he and Laura were also able to attend a Crossfit class together. Meanwhile, Jonathan is successfully combating fatigue by getting the right amount of sleep, cutting out caffeine, and maintaining high hydration levels with juices. In an ongoing effort to get 1% better, Brad recently reviewed his credit card bills. He found a $50 recurring charge for his daughter’s saxophone rental and decided to buy it for $500 rather than continue incurring the rental fee. He suggests doing this twice a year and asking if those recurring charges are continuing to serve you. Jonathan recently canceled his Netflix subscription and wonders if there is a way to the effort of it and streamline our finances. In a hypothetical example of a $2,000 car loan with a 2-3% interest rate, Jonathan asks if Brad would just pay the balance off versus keeping a monthly payment. At that low of an interest rate, Brad would not, but because of the intersection between math and psychology, there are others so debt adverse that they would pay it off. For higher interest debt or 8-12% or more, Brad believes that is more of a hair-on-fire scenario in which paying the debt off as quickly as possible would be best. Regardless of which side of the scenario you fall on, there is nuance and stigma. Rather than allow others to tell you what you can and can’t do, it’s important to know yourself and why you make the choice you do. Understanding the why behind the car payment is a better thought exercise. If it’s because it gives you the cash flow to finance even more stuff, it can grow to become a difficult position is dig yourself out of. Financing allows you to trade your most precious non-renewable resource, time, for more stuff. With every dollar you are saving, are you using it to invest, or are you buying more stuff? If you are continuing to buy more stuff, then you are still in the trap and aren’t looking at money as a tool. Because Jonathan is a spender, he wants to keep things simple and doesn’t like having structural payments. In the hypothetical scenario, he would feel the need to pay off even a low-interest rate car loan. The first listener voicemail wants to know how much in retirement is enough to adequately cover long-term care. His original goal was $10 million at age 65. According to the 4% rule, that would give the listener $400,000 a year to live off of, which is a big number. It comes down to what does your life cost? Traditional retirement calculators all start from the point of “what do you earn today”, rather than “what does your life cost”. Your income is irrelevant. In retirement, you need to cover what your life will cost. Health care insurance is based on actuarial tables put into place to ensure the provider doesn’t, in aggregate, lose money on you. The same is true for long-term care insurance. It’s priced so that providers don’t lose money on you. What is the effort to reach a $10 million balance to cover the cost of long-term care costing you in terms of time and health now? You can focus on putting systems into place now that give you the best chance to reclaim decades of quality life. Rob Phelan, fromThe Simple StartUp, called in with a question about being open to new technologies and investments. Brad isn’t a first-mover on anything. However, he has a diverse set of interests and prides himself on knowing when the tipping point is to jump in earlier than the average person. He’s done some reading on non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and believes they could be transformative 10-20 years from now. Jonathan’s process is curation and synthesis. When he reads, he skims everything and sees the point when something new becomes real. He’ll do a deep five if it fits into one of the buckets he’s interested in. He’s been doing that deep dive into crypto and blockchain, but not NFTs. While neither Brad nor Jonathan can get behind spending $2.5 million for Jack Dorsey’s first Tweet, they do agree digital ownership is interesting because of all the unique ways the concept could be implemented. Next up is a seven-year-old who says they want to learn about investing. It starts with saving. What Brad tells his own kids is that life gets so much easier if you can save money. If you spend every cent you earn, it takes away a lot of choices in life and gives them fewer options. The higher you can make your savings rate, the more freedom you’ll have. As for investing, think long-term, like many decades of investing. With a long investing horizon, the best chance at being really wealthy is with low-cost broad-based index funds or ETFs. When Jonathan’s kids are older, he thinks he will try and attach a real company to the discussion and carve out a portion to invest in it. It would be one they know and has products they get excited about to help make the feeling of ownership real. Natalie called in to say that she just opened an M1 Finance account for her traditional IRA contributions as well as a savings account so she can earn 1% on it. However, she’s never done a portfolio rebalance. Rebalancing can be scary and easy to avoid. It comes back to having a plan and an investor policy statement and not letting your brain get in the way. M1 can do this automatically and there may be some tax consequences if it is done in a taxable account. Rebalance in your portfolio totality, not within individual accounts. If you don’t have a plan, go and figure out what your goals are and have the plan match them. Rebalancing can also be done by making weighted contributions. James, who is in Jonathan’s podcasting course, asks about speeding up his path to FI by purchasing multi-family real estate by withdrawing from a 401K and obtaining a HELOC. While there are likely both success and horror stories of others who have gone that route, Jonathan would look for ways to avoid 401K withdrawals or taking a line of credit against your home. Brad would only go into his 401K as a last resort. 401K withdrawals are subject to a 10% penalty and would be taxed as ordinary income. Rather than a 401K withdrawal, Jonathan says that if the deal is good enough, the money will come. Bringing on additional investors may be an alternative. Network, be creative, and try to cap the downside. Resources Mentioned In Today’s Conversation Join the live show Tuesdays at 7:30 Eastern with Stereo! We're talking with Jonathan Pitts who's a bestselling author, speaker and he's an executive pastor at The Church of the City in Franklin, Tennessee. He's also the proud dad and a big dream advocate for his 4 amazing daughters. Jonathan has pursued a number of big dreams… and has encouraged his family to dream big too. In fact, his oldest daughter had a major role in the movie “War Room” at the age of 10! But Jonathan will be the first to tell you that life can bring major challenges and tough setbacks too. In fact, Jonathan was married to his beautiful bride Wynter… who was a successful author and magazine publisher. And just as they were putting the finishing touches on their book on marriage… Wynter passed away unexpectedly… leaving him a widower and the father of four grieving daughters. As you can imagine… this totally rocked his world and the future and the big dreams Jonathan and Wynter had planned together completely dissolved. So he… along with his daughters had to decide how they were going to live life and move forward. And it's been a tough… beautiful… messy… and wonderfully inspiring journey since. Now… Jonathan has written a new book that offers us a real... intimate… raw... and ultimately hope-filled look at grief… and how to live life to its fullest after tragedy. It's called, My Wynter Season: Seeing God's Faithfulness in the Shadow of Grief. We're going to talk about it… and what it takes to continue to dream… and encourage others to do the same on the other side of grief. Let's do this! RESOURCES: Jonathan's newest book: My Wynter Season: Seeing God's Faithfulness in the Shadow of Grief. Jonathan and his wife, Wynter, co-wrote Emptied: Experiencing the Fullness of a Poured-Out Marriage and She is Yours: Trusting God as You Raise the Girl He Gave You. Jonathan now serves as president of the ministry he and Wynter founded together, For Girls Like You––a nonprofit organization featuring a magazine and resources for girls that grew out of Wynter's desire to empower and equip their own girls and to provide parents with the resources and support needed to raise strong women. LOVE that so many of you are on board with this mission. At the same time… we need to acknowledge that in the midst of a global pandemic where many people are hurting from the loss of family members, it's important to speak to the “tough stuff” too. That's exactly why we're talking with Jonathan Pitts… because his unique perspectives can bring comfort and encouragement based on his own first-hand experience with unfathomable loss. In his book, “My Wynter Season,” Jonathan takes his readers on the emotional journey from “love at first sight” to complete blindsided loss in the midst of a season of losing family members (in a period of two years the Pitts family lost 6 family members including Wynter), to finding the beauty in seeing Wynter's continued impact on the world. During our conversation… we talk about the importance of finding hope amidst the hardest days and the deepest grief. Plus, we dig into ways to dream and/or dream again… after experiencing loss. As you'd expect for a Tech CEO, Jonathan Hensley is a busy man. Day to day, Jonathan Hensley serves as both the CEO of Emerge Interactive and as the technology advisor for the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. The tech titan who was raised in The Bay has seen his industry explode before his eyes dating back to his boyhood, well aware of both the game-changing innovation and the high-priced fluff that’s come and gone over the years. Because of all this, Jonathan knows exactly what it takes to have staying power and growth. The secret? Technology isn’t about computers, it’s about people. More importantly, it’s about their problems. “Technology is the moment someone decides they’re hungry,” says Jonathan Hensley on this episode of the Digital Hospitality podcast. *** Digital Hospitality: A CaliBBQ.Media Podcast What was your takeaway from this episode? They understand that the customer is looking for something different and they’re willing to serve their needs and really listen and engage with them. You can’t ever stop doing that.” When Jonathan says you can never stop listening and engaging, he means it. “The companies that stop growing and stop scaling are the ones that stop listening to customers,” emphasizes Jonathan. “You go to customers to understand their needs and problems. The companies that do really well fall in love with the problem, not their idea of the solution.” Falling in love with the problem, not their idea of the solution, is the real key here. The only way to fall in love with the problem is to listen to the customer and deliver care, concern and solutions in a very human way even if it’s done digitally. “How do you think about engaging people’s emotions and needs through technology?” Jonathan Hensley asked. “You’ve got to start with the fundamentals. Technology comes with this promise that it will solve all these problems, but it usually doesn’t come with fair expectations after that. Technology is only half the equation, and it’s only as good as the people that are using it. So, how do you actually empower the people? You have to understand that.” Empowering the people for leaders like Jonathan is a two-way street. As a CEO of a digital product agency, Jonathan has to be in touch with the needs of his client and the morale of his staff.
Renee from Renton has been getting excited to go Trick-or-Treating with her son this week, but as the day gets closer, her fiancée Jonathan is getting nervous about it, afraid they are all going to catch COVID. Renee says she is taking a lot of precautions, and they will limit the number places they go, but it’s been such a tough year for the kids she wants them to have just one really special day. When Jonathan comes on, he says there are too many unknowns about how other people are taking precautions and he doesn’t understand why they can’t just make some fun inside the house. In the end though, he says he’s not gonna stop her, but if she goes out, he is going to self-quarantine at a hotel for two weeks. The P1’s wanna know: Where’s the Trust?
Episode Synopsis: Mina is concerned about how worn out and emotional she has felt lately. She visits with Renfield, by request, and he wishes her well. Mina asks Dr. Seward to mix her a sleeping remedy so she might get a better rest, but wonders if sedating herself is wise. Jonathan receives Smollet’s letter containing Sam Bloxam’s address, and, after some confusion as to spelling, eventually finds his way to Sam. Sam describes moving nine of the boxes into a house in Piccadilly, and from his description, Jonathan deduces that the Count had helped him move the boxes before possibly mesmerizing him. Jonathan visits Piccadilly Circus, and discovers that the house sale had been handled by a company called Mitchell, Sons, and Candy. When Jonathan meets with the representative, however, the man is unhelpfully tight-lipped about the sale. Ultimately, Jonathan works the man over by dropping Arthur’s title, and the representative agrees to send a letter to Arthur with the details. Back at the asylum, the men ponder how to get into the Piccadilly house, deciding that they can’t easily break into such a public house the way they did Carfax. Seward asks the attendant about Renfield’s movements last night, and determine that the attendant had fallen asleep. Just as Seward is settling in for the night, he hears a terrible scream and is told that Renfield has had a terrible accident. Mitchell, Sons, and Candy write to Arthur telling him all that they know about having sold the house in Piccadilly Circus to a foreign man going by the name Count De Ville. This week's meditation and retelling is from 1 Sam 14:1-23. This is such a crazy story, and to me, it so perfectly illustrates why Jonathan and David became such good friends. In boldness, they were pretty much the same person. Jonathan had taken down a garrison of Philistines once before (1 Sam 13:3) before this episode ever occurred, which may well have been what gave him the confidence to propose the idea of two of them attacking an entire garrison, with one sword between them. God never told him to do this—it was his own idea, but it was based upon Jonathan’s understanding that Israel had a covenant with God, and the Philistines didn’t (we know this by the fact that he referred to them as “uncircumcised,” the same way that David referred to Goliath). He did include a caveat, at least: if the Philistines said this, it meant God had given them into the hands of Israel. If they said that, it meant he hadn’t, and they should come back another day. But even that, he made up. He just assumed that God would honor the “fleece” he chose. And sure enough, God did! Why was there only one sword between them, anyway? According to 1 Samuel 13:22, there were only two swords in all of Israel, belonging to the king (Saul) and the crown prince (Jonathan). The Philistines had so oppressed Israel that they had disarmed them, expecting that this would keep this in subjection. No wonder the rest of the Israelites were hiding in caves, even though there were hundreds of them. Not only were the Philistines in a better tactical position, but they had weapons and the Israelites did not. Only Jonathan did not see this as a problem. Like Caleb and Joshua when they saw the giants in the Promised Land, Jonathan was undeterred by what he saw in the natural. When Jonathan and his armor bearer (who didn’t even get a name) moved forward in faith, all they had to do was kill about twenty men. Then, just as in the case of Gideon and the Midianites, God sent fear among the Philistines and they destroyed themselves! Then the Israelites, seeing that their enemy was on the run, decided to join the fight. But it took the faith of Jonathan and his armor bearer to set the whole thing in motion. "Why exactly are we hiding in this cave?” I wanted to know. I asked the question of my armor bearer, who had been with me since my earliest days as a soldier. He was my servant, but I considered him a dear friend too. Certainly, I respected him far more than I did the majority of my father’s soldiers, six hundred of whom just cowered here in the pomegranate cave at Migron, at my father King Saul's apparent direction. “The Philistines are right there. Why don’t we just go slaughter them?” My armor bearer shrugged, as mystified as I was. Yes, the Philistines were large—giants, some of them. It was also true that our men had no swords; the Philistines had gotten rid of all blacksmiths, and had required us to come to them to sharpen our tools for farming, so that they might keep us in submission. The only two swords in our company belonged to my father and myself. So what? The Philistines were uncircumcised! They had no covenant to protect them. We, on the other hand, had the Lord on our side. We literally could not lose. I’d proven this by defeating the garrison of Philistines at Geba, and all the Hebrews had heard of it. Had they already forgotten? I sighed, frustrated. I refused to sit here and do nothing for another moment. “I have one of the two swords, have I not?” I muttered aloud, and then gestured at my armor bearer. “Well. You do.” My armor bearer nodded as a slow smile of anticipation crept across his face. “I do indeed!” I snuck a surreptitious glance at my father, who was in council with several of his cowardly advisors, and did not notice us. Then I looked at my armor bearer and whispered, “Come, let us go over to the Philistine garrison on the other side. It may be that the Lord will work for us, for nothing can hinder the Lord from saving, by many or by few.” The armor bearer grinned back at me, eyes bright. “Do all that is in your heart. Do as you wish, Behold, I am with you heart and soul!” I loved this guy. I nodded and whispered, “Behold, we will cross over to the men, and we all show ourselves to them. If they say to us, ‘Wait until we come to you,’ then we will stand still in our place, and we will not go up to them. But if they say, ‘Come up to us,’ then we will go up, for the Lord has given them into our hand. And this shall be the sign to us.” I added the caveat, just in case the Lord wanted to stop us for some reason. He hadn’t chosen the sign, it was true, but I knew He directed the steps of His faithful ones, and I knew the covenant promised victory to the Israelites. I only wanted to test whether or not this was the way in which He meant for it to occur. Together, we crept out of the cave, between two rocky crags named Bozez and Seneh. The Philistines spied us approaching from a distance, and we saw their attention turn to us. Once we were in shouting range, they taunted, “Look, Hebrews are coming out of the holes where they have hidden themselves!” They beckoned us, and cried out, “Come up to us, and we will show you a thing!” I turned to my armor bearer and we shared a fierce grin. That was exactly what I’d been hoping they’d say. “Come up after me, for the Lord has given them into the hand of Israel!” I declared. I had to climb up using my hands and feet to where the Philistine garrison waited. My armor bearer came after me, sword in its hilt at his side. When I finally reached the top of the rocky crag, something (Someone?) knocked the men down before me as if they had been hit by a great gust of wind. My armor bearer did not waste it: as soon as he crested the hill, he slashed them down right and left, twenty men in all. As this happened, panic spread throughout the camp and the garrison. The men began to flee, and the stampede seemed to make the mountain itself quake. I turned around, and behind us I finally saw my father and his six hundred men emerge from their cave. But before they ever reached the scene of the battle, it was already half over: there was such confusion in the Philistine garrison that they struck and killed one another. Some of my fellow Israelites were among the Philistines, and they turned upon their fellows. Israelites who had been hiding in the hill country of Ephraim saw and came to join the fight. In the end, the Philistines fled beyond Beth-aven, and the Lord gave us victory. As I knew very well He would. He had promised He would, and He is not a man, that He should lie!

Saul was jealous and envious of David, realizing that David was the genuine anointed king. His attempts to kill David with his spear failed. When Jonathan intervened and Saul realized Jonathan was loyal to David, he attempted to kill him with the same spear. In this episode, we examine what happened and why the spear of accusations by the posers of this world are deadly. This is a timely word as we are dealing with so many posers who, out of jealousy and envy, attempt to destroy what is around them.

Playing straight man to Jonathan Winters was one of the most wonderful experiences of my career. Jonathan and I cut a series of TV commercials for Hudson's Bay Company in Vancouver in 1976. Neither one of us worked with a script, just a general outline of the commercial. Jonathan threw me a line and I ad libbed the wrong line in reply. Realizing what I said, I fell to one side and Jonathan broke up. I am the collapsing Santa and Jonathan is playing a kid, albeit smoking a Cuban cigar. Jonathan Winters was not only a great funny man but a wonderful human being. We spent many hours together and he loved to collect Indian art (being part native himself). When Jonathan died in 2013 at 87, my friend and Seattle radio legend Pat O'Day wrote: “I am so saddened at the departure of Jonathan Winters. I guess I dreamed he would always be alive somewhere. His was a mind and style that somehow always typified the way characters he introduced would think and talk with others. He always painted those mental pictures, taking you to the scene of the conversation. He was never politically concerned. He always told his stories just to me! He had that delightful mind that he could convert to being whatever character he was at the time. You always knew he was such a nice guy in person due to the loving characters he employed. Not the future, nor the past, will ever develop another Jonathan Winters. Truly, one of a kind! I hope up in heaven they book him to do some shows. Even they would love some Winters laughs.” I miss him as does the world. He brought us the greatest gift of all: humour. Next time you see a stand-up comic, think of Jonathan... because some of the routine you are witnessing most likely began with Jonathan Winters. If there was a Mount Rushmore for comics he would be up there.

“Leadership is service, not position.” -Tim Fargo I used to have a boss that would warn me about the world and that, in order to succeed, you sometimes had to be cut-throat. That kind of thought process was beyond me and I never thought his advice to be very good (about that and many other things). On this episode, I had the pleasure of speaking with Jonathan Keyser. Jonathan is the author of the book, You Don't Have to Be Ruthless to Win, and we talk about a different model of succeeding in today's tough environment. Welcome back! In this episode we feature Jonathan Brewer. He is a former Army Field Artillery officer who transitioned to Corporate America in 2018 and is an Account Manager for Anderson & Vreeland. When Jonathan came to the Cameron-Brooks Career Conference, he had 15 separate interviews and just about every company expressed interest in having him out for a follow-up interview. At the Conference, he had more interviews focused on operational team leadership than any other type of career field, but through the discovery process of the Conference (his testimonial video here,) he learned that he was a better fit for roles focused toward business development. In this episode, Jonathan talks about making the transition into a sales role and gives three tips to launch a successful sales career. He takes the time to explain how he manages his territory and interacts with customers all the while being a good husband and father. I think you'll really enjoy listening to Jonathan's experience. Now more than over, runners of all ages and interests have opportunities to be the best they can be. No longer are the days of a small handful of elites that make up the only competitive runners. Today, if you want to be a competitive runner, you can. As a lifestyle, a hobby, or a profession, you decide how serious to take your sport. One reason this is possible is the access to running tools. Especially for long distance events, all the training information is available. Marathoners and coaches are typically willing to share their training “secrets.” Books, training gear, coaching sessions and more are available to anyone who is interested. With the running community as strong as ever, there are also more running niches that you can be a part of. Obstacle course events, ultramarathons, long-distance relays, and trail races are just some examples. You don’t need to qualify for Boston to prove that you love running and that you are good at it. With all that said, running will always be about what you can do, based on your life situations. Being a competitive runner is a mindset, not a race time or place. Being competitive is fun, it’s a challenge, and it’s fulfilling. When you choose to be competitive, running stops becoming a chore and starts becoming a challenge. Choose challenge. Your life, Your Best Jonathan Beverly is the Editor-in-Chief of Podium Runner, an author, a coach, and a lifelong runner. But to him, more than all of that, he is also a father. Throughout his life his priorities have changed occasionally, like they do for all of us, but for the last 18 years, his number one priority has been his children. On today’s Running for Real podcast, Jonathan gives insight to our running goals, our priorities and how to come to terms with the balance between the two. He talks about what he found when he studied a group of elites for the five weeks leading up to their marathon, including what they ate, how far they ran, and more. Tune in or read on to be a faster version of you. Your Individual Potential Nearly everyone’s potential is limited to more than their genetics and muscle makeup. If running is the number one priority in your life, if you want to be the best at all costs, and if you have the determination to do so, than you just might be an elite runner. However, if that sentence didn’t describe you, you still have wonderful opportunities to be great. For most of us, running doesn’t show up till 2,3, or 27 on our list of priorities. Since that is the case, STOP setting silly goals or day dreaming about how good you could be if all the stars aligned. Your goals ought to be based on your priorities, not someone else's. Of course, it is okay to dream, encouraged in fact. But if being the best runner you could possibly be meant you had to give up your beautiful family, your dream job, or any number of other things you value, would you still want to be that runner. Probably not. How to Set Goals So how should you set goals then? Jonathan says it begins with being brutally honest. What are your limitations? What are some things that come before running? What aspects of running do you enjoy most? If you love running for the social connections, don’t be so concerned about setting goals that take away from that. And if running is your precious time to yourself, don’t feel obligated to say yes to a running group. Discover what it is you want from running. Set a base goal, and then go from there. Maybe you just want to be able to run eight miles on any given day. Add loftier goals only after getting to that point. Be honest with yourself and you won’t ever feel let down. Consistency When Jonathan studied a group of elites five weeks before the Boston marathon, he found that they didn’t have particularly impressive workouts, but they did consistently put in the miles. The impressive part was the day after day workout commitment. Like all of us, they had good days and bad days, recovery days and hill days. But every day, they got out the door to run. This is the best lesson we can learn from great runners. If you want to be competitive, to be the best runner you can be, the only way you can find out is if you get out there. Decide what you want to be, organize your priorities, be honest with yourself, and then challenge yourself to get out there every day to see what you can become. Brandi starts us off with a story that makes her skin crawl. Seriously. She dry heaved like five times telling this story. It starts innocently enough. In late 2007, Brian and Susan Trost bought their dream home. Their 2,400-square-foot house had gorgeous views of the Whitmoor Country Club’s lush golf course. Soon after they moved in, the Trosts gave their new home a deep clean. But not long after they’d cleaned the house, Susan noticed a spider web. She figured it was no big deal — she’d just missed it. But she figured wrong. Then Kristin tells us about what is arguably the most controversial episode of any daytime talk show, ever. On March 6, 1995, the Jenny Jones Show taped an episode on same sex secret crushes. Scott Amedure was on the show to discuss his secret crush on an acquaintance named Jonathan Schmitz. Before Jonathan came on stage, Jenny asked Scott to describe the fantasies he’d had about Jonathan. Scott laughingly obliged. When Jonathan finally came on stage and learned that Scott was the one who’d brought him on the show, Jonathan seemed surprised. He told the Jenny Jones show that he was a heterosexual. All in all, the segment didn’t seem like much. Scott had a crush; Jonathan didn’t feel the same way. But then, three days after the taping, Jonathan bought a shotgun, drove to Scott’s home, and shot him twice in the chest. And now for a note about our process. For each episode, Kristin reads a bunch of articles, then spits them back out in her very limited vocabulary. Brandi copies and pastes from the best sources on the web. And sometimes Wikipedia. (No shade, Wikipedia. We love you.) We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the real experts who covered these cases. In this episode, Kristin pulled from: Gay and Trans Panic Defense, LGBT Bar “Jury: Jones’ show liable; awards $25 million,” by Justin Hyde for the Associated Press “Dad of accused gay-killer rips TV host, victim,” by Todd Nissen for Reuters “Murder trial under way in talk show slaying,” Associated Press “Jurors watch ‘Gay Crush’ episode,” Associated Press “Woman describes Schmitz’s manner before fatal shooting,” Associated Press “Lawyer: Make Jones testify,” by Greta Guest for the Associated Press “Defense lawyer angles for manslaughter verdict,” by L.L. Brasier, Detroit Free Press “Witness: Two at bar together,” by Justin Hyde for the Associated Press “Same Sex Secret Crushes” episode of the Jenny Jones Show on YouTube In this episode, Brandi pulled from: “Extreme case of brown recluse spiders drives owners from Weldon Spring home” by Susan Weich, St. Louis Post-Dispatch “State Farm Was NOT There When This Family’s House Was INFESTED With Thousands Of DEADLY SPIDERS” by Eric Owens, Daily Caller “Spider Man” by John Amick, The Pitch
I’m so thrilled to bring you this full circle, Father’s Day special with someone whose podcast, community, programs, and even summer camp, have impacted me deeply, Jonathan Fields of the Good Life Project. Each Father’s Day, I interview one or two men for a change for the Mother’s Quest Podcast. So, I recently asked on Facebook which father, in their wildest dreams, my community members would most like to hear from. Jonathan’s name came up again and again… alongside Dax Shepard and Obama! Jonathan is dad, husband, award-winning author, and the executive-producer/host of the top-ranked Good Life Project® podcast, hailed by The Wall Street Journal as one of the top self-development podcasts and featured recently by Apple on-stage during its legendary annual event. The podcast is beloved by listeners world-wide, including myself, who appreciate the intimacy and depth of his interviews, with inspiring guests that in recent weeks alone have included Elizabeth Gilbert, Stedman Graham and Abby Wambach. An innovator in the field of human potential, Jonathan is also the chief architect behind the world’s first “purpose archetypes”–what he calls the Sparketypes™–tapped by tens-of-thousands of individuals, companies and institutions, along with some Mother’s Quest members, seeking to amplify purpose, expression, performance, and flow. In this conversation, Jonathan and I went to all the deep, reflective places across each E.P.I.C. guidepost, talking about everything from our Sparktypes to the influence of his mother, a “maker” like himself, how he really feels about the hero’s journey and living a good life, lessons we’ve learned about letting go of expectations with our children, and how to be creators but not to be defined by the things we create. I’m so excited to bring you this conversation and Jonathan’s beautiful, powerful challenge for all of us, which he shares at the end. The whole interview, for me, felt like one amazing “epic snapshot moment” with a generous guide on a similar quest for meaning and connection. I hope you receive as much as I did. Year Anyone else feel like they need a spring reset to their year? A few months ago, we declared February the new January and facilitated a Mother’s Quest Workshop/Virtual Milestone Hike experience to help us all start again. Using photos from my favorite local hike, I took a small group on a virtual journey to: Reflect on our last chapter (as we ascend) Decide what we want to release (using an image of a big bad bonfire!) and what we want to carry forward Then, set intentions along the E.P.I.C. guideposts for our new chapter. There’s a special planning sheet we created to guide you and help you document the whole process. Truthfully, we can start fresh any time we choose. If you decide you want to reset and begin again, today, this afternoon or this weekend, using this experience and worksheet to support you. Just sign up here. Spark Your E.P.I.C. Life or 90 Minute Clarity Coaching Session If you’re feeling a desire to press “pause” on the busyness and reflect on your vision for this year, what’s working and what needs to shift, and what key guidepost would help you move forward more intentionally, I’d love to support you with a one-on-one 90-minute clarity coaching session. If you are interested in the Spark Your E.P.I.C. Life Series or another way of working with me, please send an email to julie@mothersquest.com for a complimentary 30 minute discovery session. When Jonathan first started traveling the world with his wife and young son, Calvin, as an online entrepreneur and the founder of the Personal Trainer Development Center and The Online Trainer Academy he had his own set of challenges. Jonathan is constantly overcoming the challenges of being in different time zones from his team, producing the world's largest online blog platform for fit pros, and of course, being the family man he is. Jonathan strongly believes that his own success can be attributed to being able to define problems, find the solution, and follow the endless opportunities that this can bring. On this episode of The Coaches Corner Podcast, Jonathan shares his story and insights on what it takes to be truly successful. A few takeaways from this episode are... Decide what your long term strategy is for your online coaching business so you can keep your future at the top of your mind Understand what the price of freedom is for you so you can have a direct goal to work towards with your online coaching business Learn how to discover what your problems are so you can find the solution and see the infinite opportunities you have as an online coach Differentiate between the right and wrong things you should be doing in your business so you can avoid feeling overwhelmed and focus on what really matters There will always be problems to resolve as an online coach... Jonathan simplifies it all: Once you can define the problem, you can find the solution. The real issue, therefore, is not the problem but in asking the wrong questions!! Enjoy The Podcast Coach! Years later, it has led him to his dream role – becoming a Global Brand Ambassador for a leading haircare company. This episode today with Jonathan is going to motivate you to dream big no matter what stage you're at in your hair career. Jonathan exemplifies a new generation of British hairdressing. His outlook to pushing himself in the industry is proof that it can bring it's rewards. Working with some of London's leading salon names – including at his brother-in-laws salon, celebrity hairdresser Jamie Stevens, he has worked with a host of celebrities and on major red-carpet events including the BAFTAs, The BRIT Awards and the National Television Awards. With all this glam, showbiz and working alongside one of British hairdressings biggest names many of us would stick on what we've got. Not Jonathan! Becoming a new dad one year ago changed all that for him. It was this pivot point moment that triggered a new chapter in his story, seeing him take a new direction as a freelance hairstylist which opened up the door of opportunity for him landing his new dream role. Never a straightforward journey, he's here today to talk us through the ups, the downs and the ups again that he's experienced on his way to becoming a Global Brand Ambassador. There is a lot said about friendship in the Bible. And in the story of the life of David, we are told about the friendship between David and Jonathan, the son of King Saul. When Jonathan was killed in battle against the Philistines, David mourned his loss. But 2 Samuel 23:8-23 makes it clear that David had other friends and companions along the way. His circuitous journey to the throne of Israel was not done in a vacuum. From the very moment he fled from Jerusalem, seeking to put some distance between himself and Saul, David found himself surrounded by men who not only loved him, but were willing to die for him. And these men would stick with David through thick and thin, all the way to the bitter end. Even when he made the ill-fated decision to seek refuge in Philistia, they refused to abandon their friend and leader. The godly life is difficult, and it only becomes harder if we attempt to live it without the help of friends who share our faith and are committed to our growth.
In this sermon, Jonathan and David make a plot to discern Saul's intentions, whether they be good or evil. When Jonathan discovers that Saul fully intends to murder him, the two friends must part ways, and David flees, a fugitive in the kingdom.

On Ask Win today (Monday, April 30, 2018), Best-Selling Author, Win C welcomes Jonathan Pritchard. Jonathan help companies connect with their people. Jonathan have learned how to do that after nearly 25 years’ experience on and off stage. As a professional communicator, it’s his job to know how to connect with anyone, anytime. Ask Jonathan’s friends, they’ll tell you it’s his superpower, but Jonathan don’t come by it naturally. Jonathan had to learn it the hard way. Jonathan grew up as a poor kid in the mountains of North Carolina where he was painfully shy. Eventually Jonathan learned how to overcome it, and developed strategies for building confidence, and finding common ground with anyone. As a mentalist Jonathan have been on America’s Got Talent, entertained United States troops stationed overseas, performed on Vegas main stages, cruise ships, and on down the list goes. Eventually Jonathan figured out that the same psychological techniques that he use on stage to make people believe Jonathan can read minds, are the same techniques the best business people use in sales, marketing, and every other part of business. Now, companies like State Farm Insurance, Wells Fargo, General Assembly, Theraband, or Avant Credit hire Jonathan to help them connect with their employees at events, training conferences, and any time people gather; with their clients at tradeshows, customer appreciation events, or hospitality suites; and with their prospective customers through sharpening their marketing efforts. Jonathan now take people behind the curtain and teach them how to connect like a mind reader. Jonathan love helping people discover the same magic of connecting with others as I have for 25 years. When Jonathan is not on the road he get his mail in Chicago, maintain my black-belt martial arts teaching certification, and paint in Jonathan’s free time. Jonathan Jackson was working as a contractor in Erbil, in the northern part of Iraq…not exactly the place most people would find love. When Jonathan first saw Rigien Bagekany, he thought she was the coffee lady, not his counterpart in the meeting. But he couldn’t take his eyes off her. They figured out dating in two different cultures and decided to get married, but then they had to tell their families. In July, David Richard Gallery in Santa Fe will host “ReViewing PowerPlay,” a series of work created in the 1980's examining the construct of masculinity. When Judy began this series, she went to the library to research gender; the only material available then was entirely focused on women, as if only women have gender. It would be another decade before Women’s Studies evolved into Gender Studies and Queer Studies emerged, which created a new context for PowerPlay. Judy is thrilled that the catalog essay will be written by Dr. Jonathan Katz, director of the Visual Studies Doctoral Program at SUNY Buffalo, president of the Board of Directors of the Leslie/Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art in New York, and co-curator of the recent (and controversial) exhibition “Hide/Seek: Difference and Desire in American Portraiture," which premiered at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington, D.C., where it created quite a stir. In conjunction with the PowerPlay exhibition, Jonathan and Judy will hold a public conversation on Saturday, July 7th, at 3PM at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe. When Jonathan and Judy first discussed the possibility of his writing for the catalog (because, as she told him, he was the perfect person for the job), he told me that even though he thought he was familiar with my work, he knew nothing at all about PowerPlay. When he perused the material, he commented that the series seemed both prescient and powerful, perhaps because it anticipated some of the theories about performing masculinity that would emerge from queer studies. It was interesting to think back about the antics of her male peers in the male-dominated Los Angeles art scene of the 1960's and realize that this is precisely what they were doing, i.e., performing their socialized notions about how a man should act.

Jonathan Oakes is the creator and one of the many hosts of The Trivial Warfare Podcast. Jonathan is a huge trivia buff and although there were several trivia podcasts out there at the time, none of them had the ‘feel’ of a real trivia game show. When Jonathan realizes that David is King, he swears an oath of allegiance & takes off his robe. When Saul realizes that David is King, he tries to kill him & ends up prophesying naked. This gives us a picture of how we respond to the fact that Jesus is King (Messiah). When we are exposed before God, do we submit our lives or do we fight against Him?
When Jonathan met Michaela… Not again...another chance meeting? last time someone came at him like that he had teh biggest scare of his life....he felt threatened, confused and alone. But then she fanned her hair and the windows open and he found himself in a familiar place and that is where he left her.
Jonathan talks with Veterans For Enthegenic Therapy (VET) Founder and President Ryan LeCompte about healing psychological wounds, being a dad, and helping to change the world! Jonathan and Ryan met at Psymposium 2015 where they were both speakers (watch both talks here). When Jonathan found out that Ryan was a dad, he couldn't wait to include Ryan in the conversation. In this talk, Jonathan and Ryan also share their collective debt to Rick Doblin, founder of the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) and how much both consider him an example and personal inspiration From VET's Website: Ryan LeCompte is a former United States Marine Infantryman (MOS 0311) who served on active-duty from 2007-2011. He has served out of Camp Lejeune, Quantico and White House operations in Washington, D.C. While still on active duty, he served with his fellow combat Marines returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with PTSD, yet observed that they risked being labeled “failure to adapt” and/or discharged if they talked about their problems. The heart-ache became more personal when he found one of his brothers, a fellow infantryman Sgt. Jorge Leon-Alcivar in his barracks room the morning after he took his own life. Sgt. Leon had just returned from deployment to Iraq with 3rd Marines 2nd Battalion and was clearly struggling with PTSD. Shortly thereafter, Ryan decided to retire from the military in order to help his brothers and sisters from outside the confines of military structure. He began by volunteering hours in the waiting rooms of VA clinics talking to and assisting vets awaiting treatment. He started collecting data for his undergraduate on the prescription medications being given to veterans diagnosed with PTSD, and found the same kind of cocktails being prescribed to almost every one of them. (Anti-depression, sedating anxiolitics, and heavy barbiturates for sleeping. "These drugs seem to shut out experiences associated with trauma by numbing them.", Ryan states, "and this came across to me to be not only exacerbating the symptoms, but also creating new ones. It went against the values and virtues that we as veterans came to embody while on active duty, a few of them being courage and commitment." Shortly thereafter, he began his search for alternative treatment options not being used by the VA. Recently, Ryan has organized a trip to the jungles of Peru with a group of vets suffering from PTSD to experience an ayahuasca ceremony and plans future excursions for healing. You may know the hilarious Jonathan Kite from his role on the hit CBS show “2 Broke Girls,” in which he plays a swarthy (“don’t say sleazy!” — Jonathan) cook named Oleg. In today’s episode, Jonathan talks about how he maximizes the time he spends in the gym and what he eats to make sure he’s firing on all comedic cylinders. When Jonathan first moved to LA he was rail thin at 6’2” and just 156 pounds. But he rapidly began gaining weight the LA way —from taking late shifts (at the Cheesecake Factory) and spending way too much time in the car. “You know how they say everything in Australia will kill you? Well, Australia must have a lot of Cheesecake Factories,” he told Rob. “Even the bread is deadly.” Despite the weight gain, Jonathan was still able to book a number of TV commercials, whose casting agents were looking for everyman types. That said, he knew he either had to “gain 100 pounds or lose 100 pounds” to continue getting work. “I couldn’t out-fat my competition,” he told Rob. So he decided to start eating better and running along Runyon Canyon with a bunch of magazines in his backpack; dropping from 215 to 185 in just a couple of months. Today, he eats a salad for lunch every day, exercises at least three times a week and refrains from drinking alcohol. He recommends shoehorning your gym appointments between appointments so you use your time there effectively. “Acting made me realize how food affects my energy levels,” he said. “It’s obvious when I’ve eaten better because I perform better.” Besides Jonathan, we also talked about Blue Apron (and their “lonely man” meals), Jeff’s mouth-breathing, and why Open Sky should be sponsored by a caffeine pill called “Frustration.” If you want to be part of Rob’s 4-week workout challenge this April, email rob@openskyfitness.com.
