In this episode of Keeping it Israel's "Battle for Truth" series, Jeff talks to Andrew Tucker, Director of The Hague Initiative for International Cooperation (thinc.) about the absurdity of South Africa's case against Israel at the ICJ and why there are no grounds for accusing Israel of genocide. Andrew also helps answer the questions, Does Israel follow International Law? Is Israel using too much force? Why are there so many civilians being killed in Gaza? Does Israel need to completely defeat Hamas? How can Christians best be "Watchmen" for Israel right now (Isaiah 62)? A graduate of the Universities of Melbourne and Oxford, Andrew Tucker has over 20 years of experience as an attorney in Australia, UK and the Netherlands. From 2004 to 2018 he served as Executive Director of Christians for Israel International. He currently serves as Editor-in-Chief of the global publicationIsrael & Christians Today. In 2017 he co-founded The Hague Initiative for International Cooperation (thinc.) – a network of experts in the fields of international law , history and religion. Thinc challenge the misuse of international law to delegitimize the state of Israel . Uw gastheer is Jos Hummelen. Mizrach wordt mogelijk gemaakt door Maror.
Tony Harris, founder of THINC B2B, brought his energy and passion for growth to the Wholesale Change Show. He held nothing back in his conversation with hosts Ian Heller and Jonathan Bein on how and why distributors need to realign business intelligence, sales and marketing, finance and IT to drive growth in 2023. He's a highly regarded CEO coach, senior executive mentor and thought leader. He's also the author of “FADS Marketing: Food, Alcohol, Drugs, Sex and the New Marketing World Order.” His career includes providing executive counsel to some of the most recognized global brands. Harris also advises for private equity firms, investment firms, family offices, and venture capital entities, evaluating and preparing recommendations on the viability of potential acquisitions, divestitures and roll-ups.
In this interview, Jeff Futers (on location in Jerusalem) talks to Andrew Tucker, International Lawyer and Director of The Hague Initiative for International Cooperation (thinc.) about the United Nations' anti-Israel resolutions and, more currently, the UN Human Rights Council's recently established Commission of Inquiry into the Occupied Palestinian Territory. Should this COI concern those who care about true peace in Jerusalem and the wellbeing of Israel? Will the outcome be just? Where should Bible-believers stand on this issue? These are just some of the questions Andrew wants to help answer for Christians in particular who are seeking Truth.First Century Foundations is a Charity that supports ministries in Jerusalem and many other parts of the country of Israel. In 2019, they announced a collaboration with Kaggle to create a machine learning predictor algorithm of which pets (worldwide) were more likely to be adopted based on the metadata of the descriptions on the site. The total prize offered was $25,000 After several months, a contestant won. He was previously a Kaggle grandmaster, and won $10k. A volunteer, Benjamin Minixhofer, offered to put the algorithm in production, and when he did, he found that there was a huge discrepancy between first and second place Technical Aspects of the controversy: The data they gave asked the contestants to predict the speed at which a pet would be adopted, from 1-5, and included input features like type of animal, breed, coloration, whether the animal was vaccinated, and adoption fee The initial training set had 15k animals and the teams, after a couple months, were then given 4k animals that their algorithms had not seen before as a test of how accurate they were (common machine learning best practice). In a Jupyter notebook Kernel on Kaggle, Minixhofer explains how the winning team cheated First, they individually scraped Petfinder.my to find the answers for the 4k test data Using md5, they created a hash for each unique pet, and looked up the score for each hash from the external dataset - there were 3500 overlaps Did Pandas column manipulation to get at the hidden prediction variable for every 10th pet and replaces the prediction that should have been generated by the algorithm with the actual value Using mostly: obfuscated functions, Pandas, and dictionaries, as well as MD5 hashes Fallout: He was fired from H20.ai Kaggle issued an apology Michael #3: Configuring uWSGI for Production Deployment We run a lot of uWSGI backed services. I’ve spoken in-depth back on Talk Python 215: The software powering Talk Python courses and podcast about this. This is guidance from Bloomberg Engineering’s Structured Products Applications group We chose uWSGI as our host because of its performance and feature set. But, while powerful, uWSGI’s defaults are driven by backward compatibility and are not ideal for new deployments. There is also an official Things to Know doc. Unbit, the developer of uWSGI, has “decided to fix all of the bad defaults (especially for the Python plugin) in the 2.1 branch.” The 2.1 branch is not released yet. Warning, I had trouble with die-on-term and systemctl Settings I’m using: # This option tells uWSGI to fail to start if any parameter # in the configuration file isn’t explicitly understood by uWSGI. strict = true # The master uWSGI process is necessary to gracefully re-spawn # and pre-fork workers, consolidate logs, and manage many other features master = true # uWSGI disables Python threads by default, as described in the Things to Know doc. enable-threads = true # This option will instruct uWSGI to clean up any temporary files or UNIX sockets it created vacuum = true # By default, uWSGI starts in multiple interpreter mode single-interpreter = true # Prevents uWSGI from starting if it is unable to find or load your application module need-app = true # uWSGI provides some functionality which can help identify the workers auto-procname = true procname-prefix = pythonbytes- # Forcefully kill workers after 60 seconds. Examples and code are all available in notebooks in the GitHub repo Michael #5: pandas-vet via Jacob Deppen A plugin for Flake8 that checks pandas code Starting with pandas can be daunting. The usual internet help sites are littered with different ways to do the same thing and some features that the pandas docs themselves discourage live on in the API. Makes pandas a little more friendly for newcomers by taking some opinionated stances about pandas best practices. The idea to create a linter was sparked by Ania Kapuścińska's talk at PyCascades 2019, "Lint your code responsibly!" Vicki #6: NumPy beginner documentation NumPy is the backbone of numerical computing in Python: Pandas (which I mentioned before), scikit-learn, Tensorflow, and Pytorch, all lean heavily if not directly depend on its core concepts, which include matrix operations through a data structure known as a NumPy array (which is different than a Python list) - ndarray Anne Bonner wrote up new documentation for NumPy that introduces these fundamental concepts to beginners coming to both Python and scientific computing Before, you went directly to the section about arrays and had to search through it find what you wanted. The new guide, which is very nice, includes a step-by-step on how arrays work, how to reshape them, and illustrated guides on basic array operations. Extras: Vicki I write a newsletter, Normcore Tech, about all things tech that I’m not seeing covered in the mainstream tech media. I’ve written before about machine learning, data for NLP, Elon Musk memes, and Nginx. There’s a free version that goes out once a week and paid subscribers get access to one more newsletter per week, but really it’s more about the idea of supporting in-depth writing about tech. vicki.substack.com Michael: pip 20.0 Released - Default to doing a user install (as if --user was passed) when the main site-packages directory is not writeable and user site-packages are enabled, cache wheels built from Git requirements, and more. With so many automation systems available, it can be hard to know which to use to meet your specific goals and needs as a manufacturing leader. Guest speakers Randy Jokerst and Brad Klippstein share how the THINC Developers Group enables the Metal Working Nation to perform at its best by solving manufacturing leaders’ problems through innovation. Randy is the Director of Technical Services at Hartwig Inc. and one of the founding members of the THINC Development Group. Entering the manufacturing world by way of CNC engineering, he has used his gifting in engineering to amp up machinist’s efficiency by implementing automation systems into new machines. Also an engineer, Brad Klippstein is the Supervisor of the Okuma Product Specialist Group. His manufacturing journey began when he visited a machine tool fair fresh out of college and was asked if he wanted to program robots. Hooked, Brad dove into developing new technology and applications at the forefront of the programming world. Connect with us:www.MakingChips.com/contact The THINC Developers Group brainstorms the automation systems of the future Having trouble creating efficient processes or closing the skills gap of the next manufacturing generation? Founded in 2008, the THINC Developers Group was created to solve the issues of the Metal Working Nation and provide the cutting-edge applications needed to automate manufacturing systems. The THINC control for machining systems was originally PC-based, and while the developers understood how to navigate and decipher the data collected by the control, most users were unable to view what the control was collecting. The development group was created to enable customers to build their own control interface apps so that they could use the control system to meet their unique needs. The THINC group’s focus is on the communication between the machine tool side and the PC side - teaching people to write the apps to accomplish their machining goals. The Okuma Sampling Path utilizes automation systems for optimal efficiency Better efficiency is something manufacturing leaders are constantly working towards. One way to improve efficiency while also pouring into your team’s adaptability and performance is to automate the jobs that take away from time that your team can spend in their specific areas of expertise. Limiting distractions by utilizing automation systems to set and send reminders can also boost efficiency levels. Randy talks about how one of the U.S. mints had three separate operations that moved parts from one machine to the next to make the coin dies. Using an automation system developed by the THINC group, they were able to combine their operations into a three-machine/one robot cell that produced all the parts within hours instead of days. Many of Okuma Inc.’s developments have come from the THINC Developers Group. Through the MyOkuma app, you can integrate the Okuma tools into your systems. Compatible with many different PC systems, the THINC Developers Group plays in the sandbox of the Application Program Interface (API), creating communication points between machines. The vision and goals of the customer are brought into being through the innovation of THINC and executed through their developments via the Okuma Sampling Path. Brad explains that at Okuma, through the Okuma Sampling Path, they can read, write, and access thousands of data points within the controls of systems and machines. They can make the control do whatever the customer needs through the API. All of the solutions data can be viewed and interpreted by the customers so that they can make the best business decisions based upon the data provided. Communicating between machines with MTConnect MTConnect takes the guessing work out of machine data interpretation. Okuma machine tools and the Okuma control collect their machining data from MTConnect, which harvests data straight from the CNC machines, interprets it, and sends it to the Okuma control. Manufacturers have access to this data through their own Okuma controls because MTConnect is already attached to the control from the moment it hits the shop floor. MTConnect allows you to take all the information processed and pull it up via the data stream to your phone, tablet, or computer. With Okuma controls, there is no additional fee for MTConnect. Because it is sent via data stream to your devices, you can access necessary data even while offline. Streamlining automation systems to meet your unique goals Reading exuberant amounts of data can be overwhelming, which is why the THINC Developers Group created several unique dashboard bases to meet the different needs of manufacturing leaders and their teams. Streamlining your automation systems by utilizing a central dashboard for data collection and interpretation will enable you to view and make decisions more quickly. Instead of manually checking on the tools and machines being used and recording the health, run-time, and down-time of your tools, you can see all of that data displayed on a single dashboard. The idea is to create a condition-based, automated environment that allows you to be as hands-off as possible with the menial work required to run your business. Automation systems are all about keeping it simple and clarifying communication between your team and machines. Remember! Text CHIPS to 38470 to subscribe to The Boring Bar newsletter! Israel. Show notes We had a full house this week on PrairieCast with Lava Row's Nathan T. Wright and Startup City Des Moines' Tej Dhawan in studio and our own Danny Schreiber on Skype. We took a look back at both the top posts of 2011 as well as the most popular ones and gave our predictions on what will come to be in 2012. While you're watching the show, take a quick trip over to the PrairieCast facebook page and give us a "like" at facebook.com/prairiecast. Next week of PrairieCast: Emma Peterson of Tikly and Dhawan (back for week two!). PrairieCast is a live podcast, recorded weekly, where a group of entrepreneurs gather to discuss current issues in technology and business that relate to the startup community on the Silicon Prairie and is hosted by Andy Brudtkuhl of 48Web and Geoff Wood of Silicon Prairie News.
Untitled This week we introduce three things on the show: a new sponsor (Delta Dental of Iowa), a branded pre-roll "stinger" (introduction to the show) and new lower thirds (that image at the bottom of the video with our names). PrairieCast is growing up! We discussed Dwolla's decision to cut fees on transactions less than $10, the Silicon Prairie News mention in the Steve Jobs biography, the question of the #2 startup in Des Moines, last weekend's Barcamp Des Moines, and the Kauffman Foundation's video on where entrepreneurs get their money. While you're checking out the show the show, feel free to drop over to facebook.com/prairiecast and give us a "Like." Also, we'd love to have more ratings and reviews in iTunes (audio or video), even if you prefer to watch the show here on Silicon Prairie News. Can you help us out? Next week on PrairieCast: Jordan Lampe of Dwolla and Emma Peterson of Tikly (back for week two!).
Untitled Not one, not two, but three guests on this week's PrairieCast. When he heard that the "stop online piracy act" (SOPA) was on our discussion list for the week, BrownWinick's own Drew Larson couldn't wait to drop his knowledge of the subject on our audience. Actually, that's not true. After learning that Larson was planning a seminar to address the topic later this week, I asked him (on way late notice) to sit in with previously scheduled guests Sam DuRegger of Charming Beard Productions and Tej Dhawan of Startup City Des Moines. The five us had a good conversation going not only about SOPA but also lessons to be learned from the whiners in Silicon Valley, what to expect at this weekend's Barcamp Des Moines, updates on the Startup America Challenge (have you registered your startup, yet? Why not? It's easy) and what's next for Silicon Sixth Avenue in Des Moines. While watching the show, feel free to drop over to facebook.com/prairiecast and give us a like. Also, give us a rating in iTunes (audio or video), even if you prefer to watch the show here on Silicon Prairie News. It's cool - we won't tell anyone. Next week on PrairieCast: Emma Peterson of Tikly and Sam DuRegger (back for week two!).
PC63 Lava Row's Nathan T. Wright and Startup City's Tej Dhawan are back for this week's PrairieCast where we talk about Des Moines' Startup Job Crawl, Bo Fishback on the Cover of Entrepreneur magazine, tech blogger turnover, Ben Milne's national TV debut and the unfortunate state of health insurance for startup companies.
Our guests for this episode where Emma Peterson of Tikly and the Des Moines Register's Adam Belz. Our discussion centered on lots of events like Startup Weekend Kansas City and the winner Horsebot3k, the upcoming Barcamp Des Moines and tonight's Startup Job Crawl. We talked about Dwolla's recent national attention and made some guesses as to their announcements coming next month.
Three firsts in this week's episode: Sam DuRegger of Charming Beard Productions joins us as a guest, we celebrate a guest's birthday on the show, and the same guest makes a quick exit moments later (due to what turned out to be some first time pregnancy jitters - it happens to the best of us). It was a fun show and we discussed Scott Case's Startup America Challenge to the Silicon Prairie (and Andy Stoll's subsequent challenge to Louisiana), the newly minted Iowa Startup Alliance and the good folks in Kansas City participating in Global Entrepreneurship Week with another Kansas City Startup Weekend.

We had some fun, too, discussing the size of Graff's Hudl t-shirt collection and doing our first "PrairieCast look-alike" with Graff and a certain movie star from fifteen years ago. Check it all this week on PrairieCast. NOTE: We had some issues with the video recording this week and it looks a bit choppy and low resolution throughout. We're constantly tweaking how we produce PrairieCast and will improve on it for future episodes.

We talked about Dwolla's latest technology releases and Milne's upcoming travels to conference in Europe before launching into the news of the week. We also debuted a new segment "Looking Forward" at the best events in the region over the week ahead. One other thing, BrownWinick graciously offered to let us give away two tickets that are sponsoring for the upcoming Startup Weekend in Omaha. We gave away one on the live show and saved one for you archive viewers this week. Watch the show to find out how to win one for yourself. Along with the transformation to a patient-centered medical home came an acceptance of a model that coordinates care for an entire population, not just the patients showing up each day, notes Dr. Paul Kaye, medical director at Taconic IPA. And even though the 238 Taconic physicians at 11 sites have received Level III PPC(R)-PCMH(TM) recognition from the NCQA, Susan Stuard, executive director of THINC, explains that practice transformation doesn't stop there. Dr. Kaye and Ms. Stuard described how the sharing of data across its organization is improving physician performance and value-based reimbursement levels during "Improving Physician Performance and Value-Based Reimbursement Levels Through Meaningful Data Sharing," a 45-minute webinar on June 23, 2010.
