Many of these covers feature a combination of bold colors, experimental typography, and candid photographs of the album's musicians, and have been described as belonging to the Bauhaus and Swiss Style movements.In the early 1950s, the LP record format gained popularity, increasing the demand for album covers with graphics and information. During this time, artists like Gil Mellé, Paul Bacon, and John Hermansader began designing covers for Blue Note, often featuring pictures by photographer Francis Wolff. In 1956, Reid Miles, a former assistant to Hermansader, was hired as Blue Note's art director. Miles made 400 to 500 album covers for the label, which used various typefaces, mixed letter cases, and design principles and techniques such as asymmetry and tinting. Miles left Blue Note in 1967 following founder Alfred Lion's retirement; after Miles's departure, Forlenza Venosa Associates and other artists, including Mati Klarwein and Bob Venosa, designed many of the label's covers. The early to mid-1970s saw the work of designers such as Norman Seeff and Bob Cato featured on Blue Note covers, while in the late 1970s and early 1980s, the label's records were reissued in Japan with new covers designed by Japanese artists. From the mid-1980s through the early 21st century, a number of artists, including Paula Scher, P. R. Brown, and Adam Pendleton, contributed to the cover designs for the label's releases.The Blue Note album covers, particularly those designed by Miles, have been highly regarded and considered definitive of jazz's visual identity. Critics have praised the covers' designs as iconic and noted their ability to capture the spirit of the musicians and their music. Director and photographer Spidey Smith (@Spideysmith) sat down with Bobby Bones to explore his love for capturing the moment. He has directed more than 150 music videos and shot some of the most iconic album covers including Morgan Wallens Dangerous and One Thing At a Time. Spidey recalls how during a low moment in his life he got the call from Morgan Wallen to shoot his album cover, and it helped gain back his confidence. He also shares a story of the time he directed Eminem in a music video and the joke he played on him. This was an epic nearly 2-hour conversation diving deep into Felix's origin story and the trials and tribulations of his podcast journey so far. We started all the way back in 1996, exploring Felix's early days getting into music, writing plays, and discovering his innate passion for storytelling. I was blown away hearing how he taught himself to create music on his own as a teenager, driven by a pure love for hip hop and conscious rap. From writing his own albums to performing live shows at the famous Chameleon Club, Felix gave us an inside look at his come up on the Central PA rap scene. We even got into that iconic green screen "Everything Burns" album cover art that I remembered from back in the day! Beyond music, Felix opened up about his evolution into podcasting and the motivation behind starting the Journeyman Chronicles show. After years stuck in a dead end job, he yearned to take back control of his time and do something aligned with his purpose. Even as he struggled with consistency and technical challenges those first couple years, he persevered with a commitment to keep growing the show. Now in Season 3 he's built real momentum, lining up interviews weeks in advance and attracting more guest outreach than ever before. Our wide ranging conversation touched on everything from the difficulty of balancing passion projects with family life, to the inner belief and work ethic required to make it independently. Felix gave incredible insight into his spiritual grounding and vision to build an inclusive media network spotlighting diverse voices. I could relate to so much of his podcast journey, from scrapping by in the early days to later finding confidence as a host and interviewer. Our transparent talk exemplified the real conversations that podcasting enables between two people genuinely invested in each other's growth. This talk with Felix inspired me tremendously as a fellow podcaster and content creator. I'm pumped for him to keep expanding his reach and honing his skills on the Journeyman Chronicles.
