Welcome to the The First Ones an Our POoRCHoices podcast. On this series Sarcastro picks a show from yesteryear and then rallies some (or all) of the fellas to join him in recapping just the first episode of said show while dissecting it and determining if it's a show that would fly in today's entertainment landscape. This month on The First Ones, Sarcastro is joined by Corporal Fatty, Banky to discuss the first episode of Andy Richter Controls the Universe from 2002. Turns out it's a show where Andy Richter may not be the nice guy he imagines himself to be based on the dubious plan to get his new office mate fired and repeatedly imagines the bigoted deceased founder of his compnay talking to him which may make Andy a bigot as well. The fact that it was from 2002 shocked Banky as he thought it was much more recent and Corporal points out that it was a staple to watch for him while living at The Porch. Intro and outro interpreted and performed Sarcastro.
Comedian Andy Richter is the guest on this episode of the Fred Minnick Show, presented by BAXUS. Richter is well known as being the sidekick to late night host Conan O'Brien for many years. He also was writer and producer of the show “Andy Richter Controls the Universe” in the early 2000s. In addition to having several television acting credits, Richter now hosts his own podcast, The Three Questions with Andy Richter on the Earwolf Network. During this episode, Andy and Fred enjoy a Kentucky Colonel cocktail and also cover many subjects, including Donald Trump's hands, “lazy” comedians, meeting Conan, Roseanne Barr, Jerry Seinfeld, Andy's podcast and plenty more. In addition, they sip Michter's 10 Year, Blood Oath Pact 10, Pappy Van Winkle 15 Year (Andy wasn't a fan). A creative comic genius known for concocting a cast of fictional characters all of whom he played live on air while also serving as the host of his national talk radio program. Hendrie actually started out as a disc jockey at WBJW 1440 AM in Winter Park, Fla., a suburb of Orlando. After 15 years working as a disc jockey at stations across the country, he realized he hated what he was doing. Moving to Los Angeles, Hendrie debuted in talk radio as a weekend host at KFI-AM 640. In 1990 at KVEN-AM in Ventura, Calif., Hendrie introduced his first fictional character on air — an Iraqi, Raj Fahneen. The Gulf War was happening and Fahneen vociferously defended Saddam Hussein. Thinking he was a real person, listeners went ballistic and the phones lit up. An entire cast of characters would evolve from that moment on, marking Hendrie's place in radio history. Hendrie's popularity resulted in the radio show going national in 1999. By 2006, he was ready to explore the next chapter of his career — acting in front of the camera. He departed from radio and quickly added to his resume which already included Trey Parker's and Matt Stone's motion picture, Team America: World Police, as well as television roles on Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Richard Appel's A.U.S.A., and Judd Apatow's North Hollywood. He also starred in Steve Levitan's Phil Hendrie and wrote, executive produced and starred in Phil at the Gate. For the last 10 years, Hendrie has regularly played characters on FOX's popular animated series King of the Hill and Futurama. Other recent television work includes roles on Giants of Radio, The Replacements, Three Strikes, Mike Birbiglia's Secret Public Journal, David Mamet's The Unit, and NBC's Teachers. He also played Nets Coach in the motion picture, Semi-pro. Hendrie continues to act today and is currently working on the motion picture, Last Call.

Eric Kaplan is an American television writer and producer. His work has included shows such as Late Show with David Letterman, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Malcolm in the Middle, Futurama, The Simpsons and Rick and Morty. He also worked on The Big Bang Theory throughout its run. Kaplan was raised in a Jewish family in Flatbush, Brooklyn where his father was a "storefront lawyer" and his mother taught high school biology at Erasmus Hall. Kaplan graduated from Hunter College High School and Harvard College (where he wrote for the Harvard Lampoon) in 1989. Prior to committing to a career in professional writing, Kaplan had been an English teacher in Thailand. After that he took five years of philosophy graduate school at Columbia and UC Berkeley. Starting in 1986, Kaplan interned for Spy magazine, where his duties included mopping the floors and writing blurb-length film reviews. Career in television Eric Kaplan's first television writing job was with Late Show with David Letterman which he worked on for a year and a half before quitting and moving to Hollywood to look for a job in "half-hour" work. It was at this time that Kaplan learned of Matt Groening doing a show set in the year 3000. This show would turn out to be Futurama. After applying for work on the show using some writing samples, Eric would have to, as he says, "sweat it out", for over a month before getting the job. Upon Futurama's cancellation, Kaplan went to work for the short-lived comedy series Andy Richter Controls the Universe, writing just one episode. After Fox dropped Andy Richter, Eric Kaplan then began work on the hit show Malcolm in the Middle, Eric also wrote the "Girlfriends" episode of the popular HBO series, Flight of the Conchords. Futurama In his first year with Futurama, which was also the show's first season, Kaplan served as story editor on every episode. Though having an input on many aspects of the entire first season, Kaplan would not get a writing credit until 9 episodes in. After this premiere season, he would be promoted to producer status. This was a role that he would keep through the show's end. He returned to those roles in the Futurama DVD movies. Work in Philosophy, Does Santa Exist? Kaplan's "Does Santa Exist?: A Philosophical Investigation" was published by Dutton Books in 2015. It is a serious and humorous work of philosophy. He has also contributed to "The Stone", The New York Times philosophy blog. Kaplan has a PhD. in philosophy from UC Berkeley. His doctoral thesis discusses the humour in Søren Kierkegaard. Kaplan was interviewed in 2020 by lifelong friend Roger Kimmel Smith (whose father, Robert Kimmel Smith, wrote the book The War with Grandpa, which in 2020 was adapted into a motion picture starring Robert De Niro). Their conversation about humor and philosophy was released over the YouTube channel When Humanists Attack.
Dennis is joined via Zoom by actor Jonathan Slavin, one of the stars of the play Home Front, which is about the obstacles facing a black naval officer and his white fiancee in post WW2 America and is currently playing at the Victory Theatre in Burbank, CA. Jonathan plays the couple's gay neighbor, who is also a veteran. Jonathan talks about working with the playwright Warren Leight, who based Jonathan's character on his uncle, and how he balanced bringing humor to the show without playing into wacky gay neighbor clichés. Jonathan also talks about his career in television, playing series regular roles on Dr. Ken, Better Off Ted, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Union Square, and Santa Clarita Diet and guest roles on shows like Grace and Frankie, Pam & Tommy, Grey's Anatomy and Friends. He also reveals which appearance brings in the most residual cash and which show he gets recognized from most. Jonathan also talks about being out from the beginning of his career, whether things have changed for gay actors in that time, that time he got fired from a job for being too gay, going to a gay march in Washington DC when he was just 17 and why he's so glad the closet never called to him. Other topics include: how Dennis and Jonathan first met over 20 years ago, the one yes that changed his career, how he met his longtime husband Michael, working cleanup crew at an LA sex club, his most unfortunate haircut, his lifelong love of animals—he owns a pig!--and what it was like to go back at speak at the Methodist Prep School where he always felt so out of place.

If you’ve listened to at least an episode or two in the past, then it’s probably no surprise that I pride myself in being a time management ninja. I always say that the great equalizer is that we all have the same 24 hours in a day. But as technology advances and the pace of life gets faster, the expectations of what we can accomplish grow larger. Now with many of us working from home, we’re expected to wear the hat of multiple roles, including assistant editor, IT person, and production assistant on top of our already overloaded duties, all while homeschooling the kids and cooking meals…no wonder we’re exhausted and feeling time pressured! Today’s guest has mastered the art of wearing multiple hats in the entertainment industry. Emmy award-winning editor David Rogers has successfully transitioned from editor to director to producer, all while working on some of the most iconic comedies of our time. His first editing credit came from the famous “clip show” on Seinfeld where he was both assistant editor and editor. He went on to edit on The Office which was where he eventually began directing and producing. He’s also worked on shows such as Newsradio, HBO’s The Comeback& Entourage, The Mindy Project, and his latest project being Netflix’s Space Force. In our conversation (which was originally from a few years back in the Fitness In Post days when David was working on The Mindy Project), David and I break down his path to success (that started with his main job duty being the guy who picked up the cigarette butts off the ground), and dive into what it takes to build and sustain a career like his. You’ll find his passion and energy contagious and come away with a few tips on how to pursue your dreams and manage your time like a ninja as well, not to mention learning how to build the right relationships to make the next major step in your career. Want to Hear More Episodes Like This One? » Click here to subscribe and never miss another episode Here’s What You’ll Learn: David’s favorite superhero origin story and how it inspired his own story. How he learned the editing process from his father. Why he fell in love with editing over other aspects of the business. The exciting story of he got his big break editing the clip show on Seinfeld and how all the pieces of the iconic episode came together. Why being nice is important for success as an editor. How he made the transition from assistant editor to editor. For all you Seinfeld fans, hear the true story of how Festivus came to be. David’s best tip for people starting out in the business and what mistakes NOT to make. KEY TAKEAWAY: Failing is just a First Attempt In Learning. The importance of mentoring and helping others rise up and achieve their goals. How he moved his way up from editor to director to producer on The Office. What he attributes to getting the opportunities he’s had in his career. Time management secrets to being able to edit, direct, and produce all at the same time. Guest Bio: DAVID ROGERS When David Rogers was 8 years old, he saw Superman The Movie on the silver screen and knew from that point on what he wanted to do with his life. It wasn’t to be a superhero, but rather he was on the path to becoming a Film and Television Director. He shot his own movies with kids from the neighborhood, videotaped Weddings and Bar Mitzvahs on weekends, graduated from Ithaca College with a degree in Cinema and Photography and soon after moved out to Hollywood to make his dream a reality. His first job in television was as the Assistant Editor on Seinfeld and his first solo editing credit was Seinfeld The Chronicle, the clip show which aired right before the season finale. He went on to edit NewsRadio, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, The Comeback, Entourage, and The Office, has directed multiple episodes of the show including the hour-long penultimate episode A.A.R.M., and has directed various other shows including Parks and Recreation, The Mindy Project, The Hard Times of RJ Berger and Friends with Benefits. For those of you old enough to remember when Seinfeld was on the air live, it was very sad to see it end. I'll admit it...I cried during "The Clip Show." (Admit it, you did to). In this episode I had the pleasure of interviewing Emmy Winning Editor, Director, and Producer David Rogers, the editor behind the magic of that episode, as well as the main editor (as well as director and producer) of both The Office and currently The Mindy Project. In addition he has also worked on shows such as Newsradio, HBO's The Comeback, and Entourage (and he’s a huge comic book and sci-fi geek too). David and I examine his body of work and his career path and really break down how he was able to reach such a high level in his sector of the industry despite having such jobs as the host of an Italian restaurant, and even working as a production PA scraping up cigarette butts off the pavement at the end of a 14 hour day of shooting. You want to talk about paying your dues? This guy paid his and then some. We break down David's success into the key components that you can follow to ultimately reach success in this industry as well. Jonathan Slavin was born on a marine base in North Carolina, and grew up in rural Pennsylvania. A bit of a shy weirdo to his peers, he found his voice when he was cast in his first play. After high school, he landed in New York and performed in some truly abysmal theater, before being cast to play the sexually confused protagonist in “The Best of Schools” at Ubu Rep. From there, he moved to Lincoln Center and then Broadway in Wendy Wasserstein’s “The Sisters Rosensweig”, to Dallas to do “Six Degrees of Separation”(a production that was visited and subsequently cited by the Dalllas Vice Squad), and finally to Los Angeles, to appear in the West Coast premiere of Larry Kramer’s “The Destiny of Me.” After a few months playing a string of “insert occupation here” Guy television guest stars(Flower Delivery Guy, Fish and Chips Guy, Computer Tech Guy) Slavin graduated to more memorable roles. He has appeared as a series regular on Better Off Ted, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Mission Control, Union Square, and voiced Ogo, a neurotic and slightly deranged robot on the cartoon Robot and Monster. He has recurred on Better With You, Family Tools, and My Name is Earl, to name a few. Recent and notable guest stars include Legit, Suburgatory, Castle, Grey’s Anatomy, Weeds, The Glades, and Perception. His feature film credits include Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day, Dirty Girl, Hard Pill, and My Mother’s Hairdo. Slavin is an activist, dedicating much of his time to animal rights, and is a longtime vegan and animal rescuer. As a gay man, he is equally committed to LGBT rights, and has twice participated in the California Aids Ride, a nearly 600 mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, raising funds for HIV services provided by the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. ______________________________________ The Boyz talk with the new Associate Director for American Diabetes Association in Central Washington, Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho Julie Lockhart. On today's episode, I talk to TV writer Tommy Blacha. Originally from Detroit, Michigan, Tommy came to TV writing through the Chicago comedy scene. Besides his writing for the WWE, if there's been a weird comedy in the last two decade, chances are Tommy's had something to do with it. He wrote for Conan, where he created PimpBot5000, and has also written for The Eric Andre Show, Pretend Time, Human Giant, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Da Ali G Show, Late Night with Zach, TV Funhouse, and SNL. He's been a voice actor on China, IL and Aqua Teen Hunger Force, and with Brendan Small, co-created the Adult Swim hit Metalocalypse! Currently, Tommy is executive producing and writing on the new Comedy Central show Moonbeam City. This is the website for Beginnings, subscribe on iTunes, follow me on Twitter.
Today’s guest on "ADD Comedy with Dave Razowsky” is Andy Richter. Andy’s the guy who’s been at Conan O’Brien’s side from show one! Andy’s been nominated for seven Primetime Emmys, he’s been on “Arrested Development,” “Talladega Nights,” “Madagascar,” and, who can forget, “Andy Richter Controls the Universe”? We talk about Andy Richter as a “brand," being a part of showbiz history, James Burrows “fun clause,” Conan's successful learning curve, and a “revealing" night I once had with Andy and his wife in Manhattan. Taped in front of a live audience at iO West’s 13th Annual “Los Angeles Improv Comedy Festival.” This is just two friends chatting. In other words, another great episode.
Steve Cooper talks with comic/actor/writer Ron Lynch. Ron started his career in Boston as part of a comedy team. After awhile he broke off on his own and moved West. He has appeared in a number of movies and TV shows. He has worked as a voice actor for numerous shows including Home Movies, Bob's Burgers and Tom Goes to Mayor and has made appearances on Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist, The Sarah Silverman Program, Andy Richter Controls the Universe and Adventure Time to name a few. He currently hosts a weekly music and comedic variety show called Tomorrow! every Saturday night in Hollywood at the Steve Allen Theater.
