Jessica Fontana admits that her need to feel like she's in control impacts her journey in balancing her professional and personal life. Her passion for performing arts began with ballet, which eventually set the stage for her career in musical theater. While Jessica's mom highly supported her artistic endeavors, her father initially wasn't. She talks about her college experience at the University of Michigan and its role in shaping her career and changing her dad's mind. Married to fellow actor, Santino Fontana, she recalls how they met at Birdland Jazz Club, recounting how he left before they could get a drink together, only to friend her on Facebook later that night, slipping into her DMs. Jessica explained her shift from performing regularly to creating her album, "Every Day Special" – a transition that allowed her more control over her creative work and schedule, reflecting her desire for creative autonomy and finding joy and fun in whatever she does. Jessica Fontana is an actress, and the writer, host, co-creator, and co-executive producer of “Everyday Special”, an improvised satirical podcast. She has starred on Broadway in the title role of Rodgers and Hammerstein's “Cinderella”, “Baby It's You”, and “Pipe Dream” in New York City Center's Encores! Series. She's been seen in the hit web series “Submissions Only”, and has starred in the world premiere productions at regional theaters, including the Goodspeed Opera House, Paper Mill Playhouse, Signature Theater, and Carnegie Hall. Also a songwriter, she recently released her solo debut album, “Every Day Special”. It was a musical brainstorm called – “Ludwig's Night out” – Beethoven is on a bar crawl while Sonata No. 4 (for violin & piano) is echoing in his brain. Several of the pieces created by Pritsker and Composer Concordance regulars are included in this edit.A bit on Gene Pritsker: He is primarily a composer – also --a rapper – DJ – guitarist –a coordinator of music concerts – teacher – and at one time an actor. As of 2023 he had created over 900 compositions – including, chamber operas – orchestral and chamber works – electro-acoustic music – songs for hip hop and rock ensembles – with accents from many cultures - performed world wide. #74 - Ari Axelrod: Jewish Identities in Show Business

MichaelKushner

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 31, 2022 77:30

This episode is special. I mean… really special. Ari Axelrod is an artist and I've seen him in action, growing throughout the years. The episode is sort of broken down into three parts. What crafts a great cabaret? Our views on the multi-hyphenate. And Jewish identities in showbusiness, which is a huge topic of conversation right now.  When it comes to cabaret, according to Axelrod, cabaret should be perfectly imperfect. It is the art of being yourself on purpose. So what are the pitfalls an artist creating a concert or cabaret can run into? What is the purpose for which you're doing one? How can you best prepare? And what does it really mean when you choose not to memorize your lyrics…   “I want to hear the lyrics as you. I don't want to hear it as the song because I'll tune out. It's the difference between being a tour guide and a travel agent. A tour guide says, “Let me show you all of the things. Let me facilitate your journey. The travel agent says, ‘Where do you want to go? I will help you go to wherever you need to go.'” When it comes to the multi-hyphenate, it's simple to Ari. “It reminds me of what you said before. Straight, cis, white men – they have the keys to the door,” says Axelrod. “People who come from marginalized communities, and whatever marginalization that is, they have to find other ways into the building. And sometimes it means having multiple ways in because the front door is locked for them. So we have to climb through the window, or go through the chimney, or building another building. It's exactly what you're saying, that's what being a multi-hyphenate is. It's telling our stories in all of the ways, flexing all of our artistic muscles and integrity, to be able to reflect the full capacity of our world.” And the most important topic of this episode – what it means and feels like to be Jewish today. And how does that relate to our work in the industry? Anti-semitism, unfortunately, is rearing its ugly head once again. So, how do respond to it? And more importantly – how do we stop it? “Anti-semitism looks different on the left than on the right. It looks different here. Everywhere. I think the thing that people don't understand – the main problem, specifically, within our industry is that there is a lack of education in terms of what a Jew looks like. What a Jew is.” Ari is an actor, director, singer, and Jewish activist. He recently received the 2022 Bistro Award for Theatrical Performance in Song for his show, "Ari's Arias." His award-winning show, "A Place For Us: A Celebration of Jewish Broadway," began with a sold-out run at the historic Birdland Jazz Club, featuring six-time Emmy & Tony nominee Tovah Feldshuh, and has since grown to international acclaim performing to sold-out audiences around the world. In 2020, he received a MAC Award nomination for Best Male Vocalist and won the BroadwayWorld Award for Best Live Zoom Performance. Ari Axelrod's first solo show, "Taking the Wheel," directed by Tony Award winner Faith Prince, and music directed by multiple MAC Award winner Alex Rybeck, has been performed in numerous cities around the country. Ari's work as a director has been seen at the Tony Award-winning Paper Mill Playhouse, Birdland Jazz Club, 54 Below, and The Green Room 42. Ari is a recipient of The Jewish Week's prestigious 36 Under 36 Award, which "honors 36 noteworthy Jewish leaders, all 36 years old or younger, who make New York — and its many Jewish communities — better. These entrepreneurs, young leaders, and changemakers bring remarkable energy and new ideas to religion, philanthropy, the arts, Jewish learning, campus life, social action, inclusion, and justice. Italians have been a force in jazz almost since the music was born, and this week's guest is no exception! Vanessa Racci has dedicated her career to being an ambassador not only for her Italian heritage but also for the heritage of jazz music. Vanessa grew up in Westchester County, New York amid an Italian American family that steeped her in Italian song, theater music, and jazz, which allowed her to develop a vocal style drawn from all three, combining a tart, brassy, catch-in-the-throat sound with Italianate ardor, dramatic flair, and swing. This week, Vanessa joins us to celebrate the release of her latest album, “Jazzy Italian,” which launches on October 21. Vanessa tells us about how Italian Americans have always been connected to jazz music, from the Sicilian community of New Orleans who lived and worked alongside African Americans, to its influences throughout the pantheon of great Italian American singers. Vanessa also tells us about her plans to do three more albums, following the example of Harry Warren, John Pizzarelli, and Henry Mancini, all of whom were Italian Americans who made their mark on the music industry. And Vanessa talks about her upcoming album launch party on Sunday, October 23, at Birdland Jazz Club, and how it's not just a celebration of her music, but of all Italian American music in general. Join us as we discover the world of Italian American jazz music!

Fame can be a pleasant surprise When Freda Payne recorded “Band of Gold” for Invictus Records in 1969, she didn't think much of it — until it catapulted her to the top of the charts in 1970. Even today, it's still considered one of the top 100 songs of the 70s. But Freda Payne's roots are in jazz — she recorded her very first album for Impulse! Records (known for recording jazz legends such as John Coltrane and Duke Ellington) and ever since 2014, she's returned to those roots with her recordings. Her latest album Let There Be Love features jazz masters of today like Kurt Elling and Dee Dee Bridgewater, along with long-time legend Johnny Mathis and R&B, soul, and jazz star Kenny Lattimore. Arrangements for Let There Be Love were crafted by Grammy Award-winning composer and bandleader Gordon Goodwin, with some suggestions from Freda Payne. When Gordon presented his original arrangement of the title track, Freda said, “This one's going to be a duet with Kenny Lattimore, a real R&B star. I want it to be FUNKY, put some spice in it.” Gordon re-arranged the tune once more — the way you hear it on the album now. Freda also contributed the idea of piecing together “Moanin” by Bobby Timmons and John Hendricks with “Doodlin” by Horace Silver. The clever interplay comes to life in a duet with jazz vocalist Dee Dee Bridgewater. Freda doesn't shy away from scatting either — “It's All Right With Me” features Freda trading melodies with the big band, and “Our Love is Here to Stay” showcases a stunning scat battle between Kurt Elling and Freda. Listen to the full Bite-Size Jazz interview to hear Freda's stories about coming up on the jazz scene in New York in her early 20s, traveling the world, and the healthy habits that have kept her voice powerful even into her late 70s. Birdland Jazz Club will present Freda Payne in her album release concert “Let There Be Love” for one show only on Monday, November 22 at 7:00 PM ET. For reservations, please call (212) 581-3080 or visit www.BirdlandJazz.com. Resources Learn more about Freda Payne on her website, You can find Stairway to the Stars anywhere you stream music. For Video Edition, Please Click and Subscribe Here: https://youtu.be/fhidKvftVpI Ron Aprea grew up in Astoria, NY and clearly remembers seeing Pete Fountain playing the clarinet on television. Inspired to play, Ron went to his elementary school band director, Mr. Cahill, and asked to play what he thought was Pete's instrument, a saxophone. So that's what the school gave him. That little mistake has given the world of Jazz an artist that contributes to the genre with exceptional skill to this day. Continuing to play throughout his school years, Ron finally got his own alto saxophone at age 16 and started taking lessons in a studio across the street from Radio City Music Hall. It was also during this time that Ron would frequent the famed Birdland Jazz Club on Broadway. He spent a lot of time soaking up inspiration from all of the Big Band and Jazz legends that played the club – such as Count Basie and Blakey's Jazz Messengers. Both would prove to be major influences in Ron's career. It was at Birdland that Ron met Frank Foster, who played with and arranged for Count Basie; the two became lifelong friends. One of many prized items in Ron's memorabilia is a collection of original arrangements that Frank had written for Basie's band and then gave Ron copies for his band. Ron has spent years perfecting his musical prowess. He's played with legends like Woody Herman, Tito Puente, Billy May, Skitch Henderson and Lionel Hampton. While playing with Hamp, he had the opportunity to do a recorded performance at the Smithsonian Institute, where Ron's solos were taped and placed into their Archives. As part of an All-Star band, Ron played at a 2001 Charlie Parker Birthday Tribute in Harlem. He has also been featured during performances at the Paramount Theatre and the world famous Apollo Theatre.

This is the first of two episodes featuring leaders still in the early phases of their trajectories. Entrepreneurs who founded their businesses fairly young, in underserved niches, and who are only a few years into their journey. Matt Wigler is a jazz musician who saw an opportunity in a specific entertainment market and launched a successful business. When that market was hit by the pandemic, he turned the sales experience he gained running his first business into a sales consulting business, and now he is the founder and CEO of two thriving companies.    In this insightful conversation, he talks about how he spotted the opportunities, and the philosophy he followed in building his businesses. He offered some interesting parallels between the process of making music in a band and building and running a team. And he shared plenty of insight on how to build a bootstrapped business without any outside financing. Finally, as a jazz musician, he talked about one of his favorite recordings and what he learned from it.   BIOGRAPHY   Matt Wigler is an entrepreneur, musical artist, and public speaker based in Miami, Florida. At age 26, Veronica Swift has become one of the world's most sought-after jazz talents. At age nine, she recorded her first album, and began professionally touring with her parents, as well as The Young Razzcals Jazz Project. At age 11, after recording her second album, she headlined her first show at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center. Just before graduating from the University of Miami, Veronica was awarded second place at the Thelonious Monk 2015 Jazz Vocal Competition, landing her a showcase at the esteemed Birdland Jazz Club in New York City, where she maintained a weekly residency while touring internationally with famous trumpeter, Chris Botti. Over the past few years, Veronica signed a record deal with Mack Avenue Recordings, and released her 2019 album entitled, “Confessions” with them. She has also toured and performed on numerous occasions with Michael Feinstein, Benny Green, Wynton Marsalis, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, appearing at many of the world's legendary jazz festivals and clubs. Veronica and I go way back, all the way back to 6th grade at Henley Middle School. A simpler time, and a more awkward time to be sure, but it looks like we've both turned out okay. We cover a lot of ground in this conversation, discussing what it means to be a storyteller, to be an artist, the comparisons between jazz and operatic lifestyles, international tours, going to school in Miami, and much more. We went out to dinner the day after this interview, and she casually clued me in that the week prior, she went out to dinner with Sting while she was in New York. I'm obviously a much more exciting dinner date than Sting, but save some fame for the rest of us, would ya? Please welcome Veronica Swift.

Happy Birthday Billy!! Billy Stritch is one of the premier singer-pianists on the New York and national jazz and cabaret scenes. He began his career in Houston, Texas, where he formed the vocal trio Montgomery, Plant and Stritch. The trio performed all over New York and Europe from 1983 until they disbanded in 1990. A chance meeting with Liza Minnelli in March of 1991 resulted in her asking him to create vocal arrangements for the record-breaking extravaganza Liza Stepping Out at Radio City Music Hall. In addition to his 25-year collaboration with Liza, Billy recently toured with the legendary Tony Bennett as Tony’s pianist and musical director. A solo entertainer in his own right, he has performed his own shows (including tributes to Mel Tormé and Cy Coleman) in concert halls and nightclubs across the country. Billy also serves as music director for such leading vocalists as Linda Lavin, Christine Ebersole, Paulo Szot and Marilyn Maye. He is the co-writer of the Grammy-winning song “Does He Love You” recorded by Reba McEntire and Linda Davis. When he’s not on the road, he is the pianist for Jim Caruso’s Cast Party open mic night every Monday at New York’s legendary Birdland Jazz Club and he and Jim hold forth on Sunday nights at Bemelmans’ Bar in Manhattan’s fabled Carlyle Hotel. Currently during Covid-19, he is hosting his own weekly Facebook live-stream show “Billy’s Place”, celebrating the Great American Songbook with songs and stories from his varied career. The show airs every Thursday evening at 8:00 pm EDT on his BILLY STRITCH Facebook page. On Sunday, January 24, an astounding virtual, fundraising event occurred where entertainers from around the globe rose as one to give new wings to the iconic Birdland Jazz Club in New York City. Faced with the possibility of having to close permanently due to the pandemic, voices were raised, and money flowed in, helping to raise Birdland - like the mythical Phoenix - from the ashes to fly again. We catch up with club owner, Gianni Valenti, and booking agent, Jim Caruso, about how the event came to be, and what it means for the future.

No Expectations with Peter Barber

At age 26, Veronica Swift has become one of the worlds most sought-after jazz talents. Having grown up on the road with her parents -- jazz pianist Hod O'Brien and jazz vocalist Stephanie Nakasian -- she was exposed to some of the greatest musicians of the time, including; Annie Ross, Jon Hendricks, Bob Dorough, and Marilyn Maye.   At age nine, Swift recorded her first album, "Veronica's House of Jazz," and began professionally touring with her parents, as well as singing and playing trumpet in the youth jazz group, "The Young Razzcals jazz project." With the Young Razzcals, she had her first opportunity to perform on festival stages, like the Telluride Jazz Festival, and would for the next ten years. At age 11, after recording her second album, "It's Great to be Alive," she headlined her first show at Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola at Jazz at Lincoln Center in New York City. Swift continued touring throughout her years in College, obtaining a Bachelor's Degree from the University of Miami in 2016.   Just before graduating, coinciding with the passing of her father, Swift was awarded second place at the Thelonious Monk 2015 Jazz Vocal Competition, landing her a showcase at the esteemed Birdland Jazz Club in New York City. She then moved to New York in 2017 to continue pursuing her growing career. Maintaining a weekly residency at Birdland, Veronica toured internationally and joined the lineup on the show of trumpeter Chris Botti.   The past few years, she has toured and performed on numerous occasions with Michael Feinstein, Benny Green, Wynton Marsalis, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, appearing at legendary festivals (Montreal, Monterey, Umbria, Detroit, Marciac, and more) and jazz clubs (Birdland, Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola, Jazz Showcase, Jazz Standard, SF Jazz, JALC Shanghai, Blue Note, and more).   In 2018, Veronica signed a deal with Mack Avenue Recordings, and released her 2019 album, "Confessions," with them. In addition to singing bebop and Great American Songbook classics, Veronica is also a passionate devotee of the 20's and 30's repertoire, opera, rock and roll, and metal. Swift also writes and acts in her films she makes with Darkstone Entertainment.   In 2021, Swift will release her next album on Mack Avenue with her regular touring trio: The Emmet Cohen Trio.

CBGB. The Cavern Club. And at the top of this short list is Birdland Jazz Club in NYC. It's been a tough year for music and the artists who play in these venues. Birdland was not immune to the Pandemic that took so many loved ones from us this year, so many beloved restaurants, so many bars and music clubs. Birdland continues a long history of delivering exceptional entertainment to the masses. The iconic venue has been bringing live music to New York City since it's opening in 1949. The iconic club made its name booking premier jazz acts on the stage, and has since included Broadway, pop, cabaret and comedy to the roster. Birdland first opened on 52nd Street in 1949, and was a bastion of jazz music. Named after Charlie "Bird" Parker, the stage was headquarters for a who's who of jazz: Count Basie, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Ella Fitzgerald and so many more… Herbie Hancock said, "To work at Birdland means you've really arrived on the scene." Birdland re-opened on December 2 2020. On the show, Nico takes a seat with other distinguished Italian and Italian-Americans to talk about their lives, what it means to be Italian, their traditions, and much more! Nico sits down with the very talented Italian American Jazz singer Vanessa Racci! About Vanessa: Growing up with her Barese (Southern Italian) grandfather in New York, Vanessa learned Italian American classics at an early age. She developed as a singer in musical theater, discovered her love for jazz in her early 20's and started performing with a trio. After her grandfather passed away, Vanessa was inspired to reinvent the Italian American classics that he taught her with modern jazz arrangements. Her mission; to keep the music alive for future generations, and in turn, her grandfather's memory. She teamed up with Gianni Valenti of Birdland Jazz Club, NYC, producer, David Finck, and Manhattan Transfer arranger, Yaron Gershovsky, to realize her vision. The result was a sold out album release show at Birdland in June, 2017 and a very unique album entitled, “Italiana Fresca”, that reached #65 on the jazz charts. Since then, she has performed at over 70 Italian festivals, events and jazz clubs across the country and has been played on over 20 Italian radio stations across the US and Italy.
