Santa Cruz-born Neil Erickson is everywhere in Santa Barbara. The singer-songwriter regularly plays sets at concert venues all over town, including SOhO, Topa Topa, Sandbar, Foxtail Kitchen, The Blue Owll and James Joyce. He recently opened for American Idol superstar Jackson Gilles at concert at SOhO. In this podcast, Erickson talks about how he decided to focus on his musical dreams after the COVID-19 pandemic hit. He was on track to major in journalism at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, but couldn't see himself spending his final two years of college in a Zoom setting. "After doing two years at City College, I didn't want to do two years of a four-year online," Erickson said. "I just didn't like the online and that experience that I had. It wasn't for me. It didn't work out for me." So he opted to pursue his music. His dad bought him a computer with software so that he could create, edit and produce his music. Around that time he contracted COVID-19. "I was trapped inside for 10 days," Erickson said. "Instead of playing video games, or zoning out and watching Netflix, everyday I just like wokeup and recorded and made something." With a classically trained voice in choir, passion for musical theature, Erickson focuses much of his music on love songs. Jack Johnson, Jason Mraz and John Mayer are among his musical inspirations. In this podcast he walks us through the creation of one of his biggest songs, "Better With You." He has spent many days and nights walking Santa Barbara's Funk Zone, meeting managers to get booked. His sticktuitiveness has landed him many gigs, and he is not one of Santa Barbara's most sought-after local performers. "I feel that Santa Barbara is a bubble of musicians that is about to burst," Erickson said. "I have met an incredible amount of talented musicians. It's actually unreal, how many great musicians and how many people are passionate about it Santa Barbara. The former sports editor of the Santa Barbara City College said he might return to college one day, but right now he's focused on his musical career. "I want to live in Santa Barbara and make music here, and make the best possible music that I can," Erickson said. "The biggest thing for me is can I make music, do what I love and support myself. That question has been answered for me, yes I can do it. But the biggest thing, one, the goal is to make the best music I possibly can. That's the biggest thing. And two, I want to tour. There's so much of the U.S. that I haven't seen." Josh Molina has been a journalist in Santa Barbara for 20 years. He also covered City Hall for the San Jose Mercury News. We chat with artist, evangelist, buddy of the holy ruckus, Anthony Esser!We talk his experience being a Bi-sexual Catholic and how he lives out his faith and the invitation to reach other Catholics who identify as LGBT.After earning his Bachelors in Catechetics from Franciscan University, Anthony Esser has worked in youth and young adult ministry, most recently for the Archdiocese of Washington as Coordinator of Parish Evangelization. He serves as Chairman of the Paulist Reconciliation Ministries Board and has volunteered with Eden Invitation, a ministry and community for young adults who experience same-sex desires. He co-hosted a podcast about friendship called "Better With You" and is working as a freelance photographer and graphic designer. A brief overview of our podcast Better With You.

Jonathan Slavin was born on a marine base in North Carolina, and grew up in rural Pennsylvania. A bit of a shy weirdo to his peers, he found his voice when he was cast in his first play. After high school, he landed in New York and performed in some truly abysmal theater, before being cast to play the sexually confused protagonist in “The Best of Schools” at Ubu Rep. From there, he moved to Lincoln Center and then Broadway in Wendy Wasserstein’s “The Sisters Rosensweig”, to Dallas to do “Six Degrees of Separation”(a production that was visited and subsequently cited by the Dalllas Vice Squad), and finally to Los Angeles, to appear in the West Coast premiere of Larry Kramer’s “The Destiny of Me.” After a few months playing a string of “insert occupation here” Guy television guest stars(Flower Delivery Guy, Fish and Chips Guy, Computer Tech Guy) Slavin graduated to more memorable roles. He has appeared as a series regular on Better Off Ted, Andy Richter Controls the Universe, Mission Control, Union Square, and voiced Ogo, a neurotic and slightly deranged robot on the cartoon Robot and Monster. He has recurred on Better With You, Family Tools, and My Name is Earl, to name a few. Recent and notable guest stars include Legit, Suburgatory, Castle, Grey’s Anatomy, Weeds, The Glades, and Perception. His feature film credits include Alexander and the Terrible Horrible No Good Very Bad Day, Dirty Girl, Hard Pill,and My Mother’s Hairdo. Slavin is an activist, dedicating much of his time to animal rights, and is a longtime vegan and animal rescuer. As a gay man, he is equally committed to LGBT rights, and has twice participated in the California Aids Ride, a nearly 600 mile bike ride from San Francisco to Los Angeles, raising funds for HIV services provided by the Los Angeles Gay and Lesbian Center. ______________________________________ The Boyz talk with the new Associate Director for American Diabetes Association in Central Washington, Eastern Washington and Northern Idaho Julie Lockhart. She also has over 10 year’s experience working in the non-profit arena; primarily in healthcare and education.
