Paul Van Metre was the co-founder of a successful machine shop that manufactured custom parts for the aerospace and medical device industries. Over 15 years, they created and improved software to run their entire business, which created huge efficiencies and helped them manage their growth. They sold that business in 2014 to focus on selling their complete software platform, called ProShop, to other forward-thinking machine shops.  ProShop is now one of North America's leading ERP (enterprise resource planning) software platforms for machine shops. The software manages every aspect of a machine shop business, from orders, finances, inventory, and shop floor operations.  The company grew quickly with no outside funding as happy customers spread the word in their industry. Their software company focuses on processes, customer service, and company culture. In 2024, ProShop received a $32 million growth equity investment from Mainsail Partners, which allowed the founders to take money off the table and fund new growth.  Learn more at practicalfounders.com.

He is well known for his vast work on trust, cooperation, and morality, applying these themes to everything from Covid to climate change. He has published multiple handbooks and edited volumes on these topics. In this chat, Eric and Paul talk about the psychological barriers that stop people from fighting climate change. What do trust and cynicism have to do with it? What are barriers to cooperation more generally? Why do selfish people often believe others are selfish too, but kind people don't think everyone is kind? Might most strangers actually be nice, despite all the stranger danger we always hear about? Finally, Paul shares if all his work on trust and cooperation has changed how he looks at the world and compares research in psychology in Europe to the US.JOIN OUR SUBSTACK!

This week's guest is two- time Dutch Champion, eleven-time Olympian, author and former candidate for the World Championship Title, GM Paul Van der Sterren. Paul had an unusual career trajectory, in that after 15+years as a chess professional, his “breakout” year occurred at the age of 37. What happened that year(1993)? That is one of the many questions tackled in his fantastic, newly-translated game collection/memoir In Black and White: The Chess Autobiography of a World Championship Candidate. In New in Chess Magazine, GM Matthew Sadler calls this book “simply the finest chess book I've ever read.” After retiring from professional chess, Paul became a meditation teacher. His new book, Mindful Chess, traces the development of his mindfulness practice and offers reflections and tips for chess players interested in the topic. In addition to reflecting on the lessons from these books, Paul shares wonderful stories about his clashes with the Polgar sisters, Korchnoi, Tal and many others. I cannot recommend Paul's books highly enough, and I think that this interview will give you a good sense of the lessons they contain. Timestamps of topics discussed are below.   0:00- Thanks to our presenting chess education sponsor, Chessable.com. In bustling Covent Garden in London, Paul van Zyl, originally from South Africa and former Executive Secretary of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and his co-founders, have established The Conduit. This private members' club is dedicated to uniting the world's brightest minds in a social enterprise committed to changing the world. In an interview with Biznews, Van Zyl discusses his journey from the TRC, led by Archbishop Desmond Tutu, to co-founding The Conduit. He describes how he embraces the philosophy of Ubuntu and his efforts to introduce this concept to entrepreneurs. Van Zyl explains that The Conduit merges elements of private members' clubs like Soho House with ideas festivals and business incubators, hosting 200 talks annually on global issues with a solutions-oriented approach. The Conduit boasts a diverse community of 3000 members, including philanthropists, CEOs, activists, and entrepreneurs. Speakers have included Nobel Prize winners and other influential global figures like Malala. The Conduit also operates a sister business functioning as a business incubator. Van Zyl reveals that the Conduit has expanded to Oslo and has plans for New York, Geneva, Copenhagen, and Singapore. They also plan to launch an academy to deliver recorded talks to a wider audience. He comments on the global leadership deficit in addressing the world's challenges and reflects on his time with Archbishop Desmond Tutu. I try to live up to the optimism and leadership principles embodied by Archbishop Tutu, and Nelson Mandela, he says. They demonstrated “a kind of leadership that rises above pettiness and partisanship and thinks above the horizon, not on the things that are immediately in front of them.”

We geven jullie 6 voordelen! - Ps 9, 11

Today, we're going to talk about making a difference in the lives of vulnerable children.   There are 8,500 children in the foster care program in Tennessee. The children who are not with one of Tennessee's 4,000 foster families have to be housed by the Tennessee Department of Children's Services. In Tennessee there are 400 children waiting for adoption. Those are the statistics and there is a lot we can do to support these vulnerable kids.   This Thursday Paul van Woudenberg will tell his story of how God called him and Rebecca to make a difference in the lives of vulnerable children – first by supporting children overseas, then by adopting and hosting children themselves, and finally by forming Connect South Central Tennessee -- a non-profit organization that encourages churches to support their local Department of Children's Services office and showing God's love to vulnerable children and the adults who care for them.   Paul's Linked-in profile says he is a husband, father, and passionate advocate for vulnerable children. The benefit is not one way. Paul says, “I believe God is going to use these kids to wake up the church in Middle Tennessee.”

Data management isn't just a skill for data scientists. Today's shop floor is being managed by connected software systems that put manufacturing-specific data right into the hands of operators. In addition to setting up and running equipment, operators are expected to interact with high-tech data software right at their work station that makes their job easier.Data management is a skill every employer wants in a new hire - especially those in technical fields. So how should schools incorporate data into technical programs?Paul Van Metre, Founder of ProShop ERP, is on a mission to help more schools move from spreadsheets to authentic industrial software so students have the foundation they need for the workforce. We talk all about data management for the shop floor & how to integrate these systems and processes in the classroom.3 Big Takeaways from this episode:Spreadsheets are better than no data management, but ERP is even better: If your program isn't exploring data management at all, then spreadsheets are a great place to start (many manufacturers use them all the time). But to truly simulate the advanced manufacturing workplace, use authentic software like an ERP system (which are sometimes free to education)Schools should teach the integration of digital technology and physical machines: There isn't a job in manufacturing where an employee doesn't interact with business management software. Learning these skills in school, especially how they impact the work done on manufacturing equipment, will help students excel in the workforce. Whether using ERP to manage projects over a semester or launching a full student-run business, teachers can explore a wide range of options to incorporate data management into their curriculumStudent-run businesses are a great way to teach manufacturing skills & employability skills at the same time: Most technical programs focus on teaching hard skills, like machine operation and programming. Transforming those skills into a student-run business enables students to learn employability skills, too: customer service, sales and marketing, product development, data management, teamwork, communication, time-management, etc. These are the kinds of employability skills that make them ideal candidates for the workforce.ResourcesLearn more about ProShop ERPEducators - contact ProShop if you're interested in getting this software into your technical program!Learn all about Eagle Manufacturing, the student-run business in Brown CountyConnect with Paul on LinkedInConnect with ProShop on social media:Facebook  |  Twitter  |  LinkedIn  |  Instagram  |  YouTubeEpisode page: https://techedpodcast.com/proshop/Instagram - Facebook - YouTube - TikTok - Twitter - LinkedIn

Dr. Van Buynder explains the long-term consequences of shingles, including postherpetic neuralgia and eye complications He discusses two vaccines available in Australia, Zoster and Shingrix, highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of each and ways to protect oneself against shingles.  Visit Immunisation Foundation of Australia for more information Host Steph O'Connell is a public health advocate with 25 years' experience in strategic communications. She became a public voice for vaccinations when her daughter, Lily (23), narrowly survived W strain of Meningococcal on Christmas Day, 2017. Nine months later her sister, Grace, donated a kidney that has since transformed Lily's life.  Steph's advocacy for immunisation awareness and vaccination became a collaboration in 2018 with Meningococcal Australia and resulted in Meningococcal vaccination campaigns by the Australian Government Department of Health and NSW Health. Lily's story quickly resonated with audiences and became a national and international appeal for awareness, education and vaccination.  Steph's work expanded during the pandemic and today she continues to advocate for improved access to vaccines, public education for lifelong vaccination behaviour and policy reform.
