Elizabeth Packard is moved into an asylum ward where harsh treatment often breaks patients spirits. She is determined to survive and help patients.

In 1911, experts believed that the psychology of different races was distinct, and so, like other states, the state of Maryland founded Crownsville, a mental asylum administered by an all-white doctor and nursing staff expressly and exclusively for African-Americans.  From her book "Madness," author/Peabody-award winning journalist/on-air NBC correspondent Antonia Hylton describes how the physical building was built through the labor of actual patients; how many African-Americans over the years were wrongfully sent to Crownsville, and how its medical practices didn't expect patients would ever leave, let alone be healed. Denbigh Mental Asylum was constructed between 1844 and 1848, with the intention of providing care for the mentally ill in Wales. The facility was designed in a Gothic Revival architectural style, with sprawling wards and intricate stonework that lent an air of dignity to the institution. At its peak, the hospital could house more than 1500 patients, and it provided employment for many residents in the surrounding area. Over time, however, the treatment of patients within the asylum began to decline, and the once-noble institution became a place of despair and anguish. By the mid-20th century, the reputation of Denbigh Mental Asylum had suffered considerably due to numerous reports of abuse, overcrowding, and poor living conditions for the patients. The facility was eventually shut down in 1995, and the buildings were left to decay, their windows shattered and their once-proud facades crumbling under the weight of time and neglect. As the years have passed, stories of the paranormal activity within the asylum have spread, drawing the attention of paranormal investigators, urban explorers, and thrill-seekers alike. This is the story of the ghostly residents of Denbigh Mental Asylum, which stands in ruins today. If you were Black with mental illness in the early 1900s, you couldn't seek help just anywhere. You'd have to go to a segregated asylum like Maryland's Crownsville Hospital, formerly known as the Hospital for the Negro Insane. The facility opened in 1911 when 12 men were brought into the woods outside of Baltimore and told to start working. They were tasked with creating one of the first asylums for Black Americans with mental illnesses, and they would soon become its first patients.  Kai speaks with NBC News correspondent Antonia Hylton about her latest book, “MADNESS: Race and Insanity in a Jim Crow Asylum,” which breaks down the dark history of one psychiatric institution, and highlights the hope it offered Black patients. Mental Asylum in Georgia, It Was the World's Largest Mental Hospital. Haunted Or Not? A truly creepy and scary place. When it was first opened it was known as the Georgia Lunatic Asylum. Back in 1837 Georgia lawmakers authorized a “Lunatic, Idiot, and Epileptic Asylum.” And it was built and opened in 1842. The first "patient" arrived in December 1842. They reported that he died of “maniacal exhaustion” shortly thereafter. Located in  Milledgeville Georgia, on approximately 2,000-acres. The property still echoes "with the memory of the patients who were treated and mistreated at Georgia's state asylum". The Asylum is mostly empty and in much need of repair. The old asylum is not reported to be open to the public. There is a new section in operation called the Central State Hospital. He was asked to investigate the case of an escaped prisoner from the mysterious mental asylum on Shutter Island. The island itself housed some of the most dangerous criminals in the entire world, and they were all considered “criminally insane.” And the only way on and off the island was by boat that was controlled by the asylum.  One of the prisoners had gotten loose and was somewhere on that very island, and it was pertinent that the detective finds her. But the minute he stepped foot on the island, something felt off. Like nobody wanted to find the escaped prisoner. The guards, the doctors, the nurses, they all seemed more interested in him. So one of us thought it was a great idea to go to one of Australia's most haunted places - Larundal mental asylum, an old abandoned psychiatric hospital in Melbourne Australia. We weren't going ghost hunting alone so who better to call then the ghosbuster himself the world-renowned medium David The Medium. On the outskirts of Melbourne Larundal has a long list of supernormal activity and has been a very popular destination for paranormal explorers. It was built in 1938 but was interrupted by war and didn't start housing psychiatric patients until 1953. It housed one of Australia's most notorious serial killers and was the birthplace of medical lithium used to treat people with bipolar disorder. The site itself is very eery, sombre - you just feel uneasy. Currently it's in the process of being demolished to make way for houses. If there was one person that we knew we could find spirits with it was David The Medium. Since talking about our experience with Larundal we learnt that is has been an explored site for many of our friends as we grew up and we chatted with our best mate Christian Rocchi about his eery experience at the same mental asylum.
