Today on Middle Grade Mavens, Julie chats to Kate Temple, author of "The Dangerous Business of being Trilby Moffat." To learn more about Kate head to Kate Temple Books - Hachette Australia This is NOT just any old book. THIS is a legal document. It contains a truthful record of how Trilby Moffat was accidentally promoted to the most important job that ever existed. The job of Time Keeper. A mystery illness is making people bake ancient cakes, speak dead languages and then fall asleep and never wake up. When Trilby Moffat's mother catches this strange sickness, Trilby must find her only other surviving relative, a 300-year-old aunt who lives in a secret antique shop on the edge of time. Ahead of Trilby lies an unusual inheritance, an opportunity that will never be repeated and a man in a top hat who will try to kill her . . . more than once. This is the story of how one ordinary girl finds herself on a deliciously fast-paced adventure, fleeing to an island where time doesn't exist, cats are particularly rude and cake is always on the menu. Here she will take on the most treacherous job of all time. Well . . . outside of time, to be precise. THIS IS THE DANGEROUS BUSINESS OF BEING TRILBY MOFFAT. With a body made of wax, seaweed for hair and polished abalone shells for eyes, Corpse is bound to haunt the Witches' sea shack forever. She has no memory of the kid she was before she was snatched and ended up on the rock-that-doesn't-exist. But the delivery of an unexpected message sets Corpse off on a surprising quest, searching for answers to the old and familiar questions that have filled her not-brain since the day she first woke up a ghost. Questions about her name. Questions about her family. With only her eight-legged friend Simon for company, Corpse heads into the unknown. There will be danger - cruel Witches, a silver-eyed sea monster and a cunning Merchant with a hungry grin - but Corpse is not afraid. She'll stop at nothing to uncover the truth about her past. Only some answers, it turns out, are much closer than she thinks. She writes the wildly popular Ella and Olivia series (30 books + 6 treasuries and counting!), the Puppy Diary books and the Frankie Fox Girl Spy stories, and has written historical fiction including My Australian Story: Escape from Cockatoo Island. Her website: Yvette Poshoglian Published: 1st March 2022 ISBN: 9781761043789 Number Of Pages: 288 For Ages: 9 - 11 years old This was meant to be Alice's year to shine, but things are already going wrong... At school, she's given young environmental activist Greta Thunberg as her pen pal for a fictional writing assignment. Why couldn't Alice get someone easy to write to, like a pop star? Then she's put in charge of taking the Harmony Day Food Fair online, which seems impossible, especially when she is teamed up with the most annoying boy in her school. As if she didn't have enough on her plate, Alice gets kicked out of her bedroom by her grandmother coming to stay. And no matter what Alice does, she'll never be able to live up to her infuriating big sister's achievements, right? Through her letters to Greta, Alice finds herself opening up about her life. Kate and Mandy chat with Julie Anne Grasso - children's author, mum, Middle-Grade Mavens podcaster, former paediatric nurse, current library book wrangler, Instagram reels tragic and of course Pea! Julie takes us on a whirlwind journey through the story of her fascinating life – from her ‘p-nurse' career, the births of her children, the autism diagnosis for her son ‘Boy Wizard' and using songs and stories to help him eat, and her next career as a librarian and writer! She also talks about her book review podcast Middle Grade Mavens, which is all about children's literature for primary school-aged kids – check it out. Julie also shares her story of being ‘pea-brarian' who is a strong advocate for everyone accessing the amazing offerings that all library users can use for free, from books and films, homework help, free computer and printing access, community rooms and even just a safe place to feel a part of a community. Julie also strongly encourages destigmatising a lack of interest or inability to read and expanding the options - think Instagram captions, car manuals, graphic novels, food labels, audiobooks, comic books – it's all reading. Mandy also talks about confronting her own ableism, ‘reading snobbery' and expectations about her peashoots' reading capability and interest. It's okay if reading doesn't come naturally and it's okay if you just can't. As a children's author, Julie also talks about “writing diversity into stories” and always includes characters with different abilities in her books, and also makes sure inclusive books are available in her library. They also discuss the power of special schools and again confronting ableism, expectations and accepting and embracing what is. Today on Middle Grade Mavens, Pamela reviews, "Dragon Skin," by Karen Foxlee, and Julie reviews, "Seven Wherewithal Way," by Samantha-Ellen Bound. Plus Karen and Sam both stop by in for an interview.  About: Dragon Skin: How to save a dragon: 1)Assemble equipment. Water, Weet-Bix, sugar, syringe, sticky tape, scissors. 2)Believe in everything. Pip never wants to go home. She likes to sit at the waterhole at dusk and remember Mika, her best friend. At home her mother's not the same since her boyfriend moved in. They don't laugh anymore and Pip has to go to bed early, turn off her light and pretend she doesn't exist. When she finds a half-dead creature at the waterhole, everything changes. She knows she has to save this small dragon and return it to where it comes from. But how? About: Seven Wherewithal Way: Ferdinand fell out of the sky on the hottest day of the year, while Celeste and Esmerelda Barden were on the front porch eating ice-cream. Celeste is having the worst summer ever. Her parents are off on an adventure and she's stuck at Gran's house with her annoying little sister, Esme, and strict instructions to be responsible. Or, as Esme says, boring. So when their eccentric cousin Ferd crash-lands a flying bus in the yard, what choice does Celeste have but to follow Ferd back home to Seven Wherewithal Way? Wherewithal - Ferd's house, and the gateway to the many Realms unreachable from Earth - is bursting with magic and mystery and otherworldly creatures. It's Celeste's favourite place in any world. But when something tries to break in through the portal in the pantry - the door to the mystical Realm of Forests - Celeste learns that both Wherewithal and her beloved cousin are under threat. If Celeste wants to save her cousin, their home, its inhabitants and possibly even all the Realms, she is going to have to find her adventurous side. Fast. Today on Middle Grade Mavens, Julie chats to Samone Amba, author of The Good Times of Pelican Rise, released on July 27 2021 by Affirm Press, and Illustrated by Lucy Zhang. The idea for this series came to Samone while she was shelving books in the middle-grade section of Beaumaris Library. Her creative license wants to add that a book fell on her head, like Henny Penny's acorn or Isaac Newton's apple, but that is simply untrue. Samone is now a pre-service early learning and primary school teacher and will one day be teaching middle grade as well as writing it! About the book: The Good Times of Pelican Rise: Save the Joey's UGH! After-school care, again? It's official: they've finally reached grade six, and Sunday Moon and her besties Ockie, Kirra and Lottie are Legends of the School! But no matter how legendary they are, as soon as the end of day bell rings they are MAROONED in after-school care at Club Koala. Day in, day out, with only the karaoke-loving grade twos and nit-infested preppies for company. After the worst summer of bushfires ever, Sunday is determined to ditch the headstand competitions and use her time at Club Koala to make a difference. Sunday's parents might say NO! to getting a pet, but that won't stop Sunday from saving as many joeys as she can - with the help of her friends, a radio station, a whole bunch of wool from the op shop, and a LOT of animal memes. Welcome to The Good Times of Pelican Rise ... a fun series that explores growing up, getting involved, hanging out with besties and using your voice to Be the Change. Today on Middle Grade Mavens, Pamela interviews, Elizabeth Honey, author of "From Stella Street to Amsterdam," published by Allen and Unwin in September 2020. About the book: When Henni's stubborn old neighbour Willa insists on returning to her childhood home in the Netherlands for a wedding, Henni leaps at the chance to be her travelling companion. 'Lucky duck! Fantastic opportunity!' That's what everyone in Stella Street said. 'Oh boy, chance of a lifetime.' But during the long flight to Amsterdam, Willa reveals to Henni the real reason for her journey: a terrible family secret stretching back to the Second World War. As Henni makes friends with more and more of Willa's relatives, she must decide if they should know the truth. And is that the only mystery? A triumphant return to the wonderful, warm and witty world of Stella Street by the much-loved author Elizabeth Honey. Author Bio: Elizabeth Honey grew up on a farm, went to Swinburne art school, had adventures abroad and a variety of jobs before becoming an illustrator, then also a writer, for children. She lives in Richmond, Melbourne in a house of books: picture books, poetry, art (Matisse particularly) and weird books. Fortunately, her retired graphic designer husband is also a bibliophile. They have two grown-up children and a granddaughter in Amsterdam. All her life Elizabeth has zoomed around on her bike - not a lycra rider, just a charging-round-the-place rider - and that vibrant bike city in the Netherlands has become an inspiration. She's also passionate about streets for people not cars, public parkland and place-making, and an abiding passion is habitat for wildlife, for the survival of our unique animals. Today on Middle Grade Mavens, Pamela chats to Wendy Orr, about her latest book "Cuckoo's Flight," and Julie chats to Mikki Lish and Kelly Ngai about their debut book, "The House On Hoarder Hill." About Wendy's Book: When Clio's town in Bronze Age Crete is threatened by seafaring raiders, she faces the greatest sacrifice of all. Can Clio, her herd of horses and a new young friend find a way to change their destinies? Another wonderfully engaging historical middle fiction adventure from the author of Dragonfly Song and Nim's Island. If she had stayed to load the kiln as she should have, she'd never have seen the ship. Mama said the ship still would have been there, so everything had to happen the way it did. But that's not true. Clio saw it, and the world changed. When a raiders' ship appears off the coast, the goddess demands an unthinkable price to save the town - and Clio's grandmother creates a sacred statue to save Clio's life. But Clio is torn between the demands of guarding the statue and caring for her beloved horses. Disabled in an accident, she must try to put aside her own grief at no longer being able to ride - and in the process, save a friend's life and stop a war. Rippling with emotion and drama, war and resistance, fear and determination, this novel is a brilliant companion to the highly acclaimed Dragonfly Song and Swallow's Dance. Website: Home · Wendy Orr About Mikki and Kelly's Book: Magical, spooky and mysterious: welcome to the House on Hoarder Hill ... When Hedy and Spencer start receiving messages on dusty picture frames, Christmas at their grandfather's spooky house turns into a mission to solve the mystery of their grandmother's disappearance. What is their magician grandfather not telling them? With the help of a (talking) mounted stag head, an (also talking) bear rug, and other (currently) disembodied spirits, and against the resistance of gargoyles and ravens, Hedy and Spencer set out to find the truth.
