The Final Draft Great Conversations podcast is all about books, writing and literary culture. We're dedicated to exploring Australian writing, looking into the issues that drive our storytelling to discover more from the books you love. These are the stories that make us who we are. Shirley Marr is a first-generation Chinese Australian author of young adult and children's fiction, including YA novels Fury and Preloved, and children's novels Little Jiang, A Glasshouse of Stars. In Singapore Peijing understood how everything worked; her Ba-Ba worked hard seven days a week, her Ma-MA worked to raise the family and her Ah-Ma worked at making delicious mooncakes. Peijing and her little sister Biju worked at creating their little world and populating it with animals both real and mythological, and telling fantastic stories about the animals' lives. In Australia things seem upside down to say the least. Ba-Ba now goes to work for only five days and is wearing a polo shirt. Ma-Ma needs Peijing to translate and is not happy that she is not allowed to bring her daughters lunch at school. And Ah-Ma seems confused and is always asking Peijing her name. Peijing must be strong and honorable for her family but that is not always easy when everything is so new. Join me as we discover Shirley Marr's All Four Quarters of the Moon... Today I wanted to indulge us with some fun, thoughtful, edge of your seat, literary sci-fi. Now that may seem like I've just thrown a whole lot of adjectives at the wall to see what sticks (and in a way I have) but stay with me, I think I'm justified…Georgina Young's debut novel Loner won the Text Prize for Young Adult novel, was commended by the CBCA as a notable book for older readers, and was shortlisted for a Prime Minister's Literary Award. Now Georgina is back with her new novel Bootstrap and it is all the adjectives I mentioned above and more.Ginsborough's famous for its chicken and leek pies and not much else. Down the road in Koornang all they've got is Al's Takeaway and Jackson Sweeney is doing his best to sour that reputation.Sweeney's not languishing in Koornang per se. Languishing sounds way more active than what Sweeney is doing. With nothing but Hooley Dooley's on a Friday to look forward to (and Sweeney's pashed most of the available blokes there) life is looking dire. That is until a tall, dark and very out of place bloke named Bootstrap splits into Sweeney's life saying he's come to see the night that Sweeney becomes a hero! Now I could tell you that Bootstrap is full of the most outlandish cast of characters you've met in a long time…I could tell you that the book has more twists than the highway out of Ginsborough…I could mention that this is a refreshing take on the sci-fi staple of messing with your own timeline…All of that would be true but it still wouldn't capture the enormous heart that Georgina Young has infused into the most unlikable, lovable rogue that is Sweeney and the strange and beguiling figure of Bootstrap.Sweeney feels trapped in Koornang and that's the central dramatic tension of the novel. He feels like nothing will ever happen to him and little changes when the entirety of the space time continuum seems to come crashing onto his doorstep. In a lot of ways Sweeney is all of us when we are feeling the FOMO and getting down on our lives. In a much more real way he is a young gay man who is languishing in a town that doesn't have enough to offer him and is actively trying to such the life out of him.The arrival of his best friend Marnie and the enigmatic Bootstrap are still not enough to shake Sweeney's stupor. He sees one as an excuse to get drunk and the other as a quick pash when he gets there. Marnie's on her own journey into the doldrums and can't quite seem to shake her own tendency to plant her food in her mouth. These are not the heroes we need but then again Bootstrap may not deserve saving…I loved Bootstrap as much for its high octane adventuring as for its parodying small town charm (or was it desperation? Sweeney is really unsure about his nostalgia) In highlighting that regional Australia is a tough place to grow up it also shows us a world where every corner holds a memory. It's all in stark contrast to the figure of Bootstrap who is a fugitive from his own past. There's an incredibly clever and thoughtful crop of mind bending speculative and science fiction popping up in Australia lately and I am here for it. Georgina Young's Bootstrap is so grounded as to defy the notion that it literally opens up a whole new world of timey wimey adventuring for readers…Book Club is produced and presented by Andrew PopleWant more great conversations with Australian authors?Discover this and many more conversations on Final Draft every week from 2ser.Get in touch with Andrew and Final Draft. “Most people don’t think of the Arts as an industry sector. It’s 4 ½ % of our GDP – we need to make sure that arts and creative industries are part of our state’s economic recovery strategy.” Christin Crampton Day, Executive Director, Colorado Business Committee for the Arts A couple of times a year I feature a successful non-profit and its leader. I like to find non-profits that intersect with Colorado’s business community, and in the midst of the brutal effects of COVID on the arts and entertainment sector, I invited Christin Crampton Day, Executive Director of the Colorado Business Committee for the Arts, to join me CBCA advances Colorado’s creative economy by connecting business and the arts. Christin obviously faces some huge challenges now – arts venues are shut down – we talked about that, and about WHY there’s a strong connection between business and the arts. I left our conversation convinced that a business’s operations can be enhanced by partnerships with the arts community.

A high school student in the United States got accepted into 39 colleges and universities. Jordan Nixon, a high school senior of Douglas County High School (DCHS), Georgia, applied to more than 50 schools around the country. As of March, she has already received 39 acceptance letters and $1.6 million worth of scholarships. She noted that she did not apply to those schools on a whim but picked them meticulously. She researched which schools had a diverse student population and offered International Business as a degree program. Currently, she is narrowing down her choices and has until May 1 to decide on which school to attend. Nixon was the first DCHS student to ever receive that many acceptance letters. One of the people that helped Nixon achieve this accomplishment was her private college adviser. Nixon's adviser guided her in writing application essays and preparing for the SAT, a college admission test in the United States. To apply to multiple schools, Nixon used mobile apps, like the Common Black College Application (CBCA). Because of such platforms, Nixon did not have to fill out an application form for each school. She also only had to pay once for sending out her applications. Even though apps like the CBCA make it easier for students to send out college application forms, a college consultant says that it is still better for students to do campus visits and send personal e-mails to schools. As for Nixon, she advises students to start working hard as early as the first day of high school. She said focusing on tests, homework, and essays is a must.

Felice Arena chats to Dani Vee about writing books for kids, acting and writing historical fiction. In addition to being a prolific writer of children's books, Felice Arena is also an accomplished actor, speaker, TV presenter and playwright. In the Nineties he played Marco Alessi in the TV soap opera Neighbours for a year before heading off to pursue a musical theatre career in London. During his time in the UK he starred in West End musicals Hair, Godspell and What a Feeling. It was in this period he began to write, sparked by nostalgia for his boyhood days in country Victoria. Felice's debut novel, a story about a dolphin and a swimmer set in Australia, was picked up by a UK publisher, and he hasn't looked back since. Felice’s books have topped bestseller lists and garnered several awards, including six Australian Children Choice Book Awards. Some of these include the Andy Roid series, the Sporty Kids books, the hugely popular Specky Magee series, and most recently his acclaimed historical adventure novels The Boy and the Spy and Fearless Frederic - which recently was listed as a CBCA notable book. His latest novel, A Great Escape, is a gripping adventure set in Cold War Berlin and is out now. Felice's books have also been published in the UK, USA, Ireland, New Zealand, Vietnam, Taiwan, Japan, and China. In 2013 Felice was named Koala Legend of the year (Kids Own Australian Literature Awards).

A series of projects to help repair relationships between soldiers and civilians in troubled eastern DRC has brought the two groups together in unexpected ways. I spent several days with Congolese soldiers and villagers in North Kivu province to find out how Christian Aid partner CBCA has been rebuilding trust in an area blighted by violence towards civilians by armed groups. In this reflection a few weeks ahead of elections in DRC, I look at how CBCA has been supporting reform from within the Congolese army and how a church choir in the tiny village of Kibati provides a small glimpse of a more peaceful future for the region. Discussion of the Benefits of CBDa Hemp with Inesa Ponomariovaite, a holistic health practitioner and an expert on hemp and CBD.Inesa is a visionary on a mission to change the world by teaching people to harness the power of Nature, like she did, to restore their health and well-being.She founded Nesa's Hemp, a dominant player in the CBDa hemp oil industry. Nesa's is the world's first-ever full full-spectrum CBDa Hemp Oil. It is created through a unique process (developed by Inesa herself) to preserve all the healing compounds of the hemp plant, which bring optimal health and healing and restore the body to its natural state.Leafly describes CBDa: CBGA converts to three major cannabinoid precursor compounds, depending on which plant enzymes are activated to direct the synthesis:THCA (tetrahydrocannabinolic acid)CBCA (cannabichromenic acid)CBDA (cannabidiolic acid). When decarboxylation occurs by exposing the cannabis plant to either heat or sunlight, CBDA converts to CBD. In other words, CBDA is the raw form or predecessor to CBD.Why so many people are using CBDa to help improve their mental health during the pandemic and why it's more effective than CBD?As the impact of the pandemic drags on and the Omicron variant creates even more uncertainty, a growing number of people are reporting higher rates of anxiety, stress, loneliness and depression. In fact, since the beginning of the pandemic rates of depression have tripled, levels of loneliness have skyrocketed, and many people are reporting symptoms of distress, such as difficulty sleeping, overeating and increased alcohol consumption. Nowhere is this growing crisis more apparent than within the workplace, where rates of stress and burnout have gone through the roof, with 89 percent of employees reporting that their work life has been getting worse. With people's mental health at a breaking point, many people are turning to CBDa products for relief from the pressures of work, family, finances and world events. CBDa is the parent compound to CBD and is made with living hemp, which helps sustain the plant's natural molecular structure. This in turn ensures people who consume CBDa reap the benefits of the plant's healthy fats, vitamins, and beneficial phytonutrients - resulting in restored cellular balance, restfulness, and rejuvenation. You can learn more about Inesa, her journey, and Nesa's Hemp by visiting https://www.nesashemp.com/.
