Beloved Australian author Jackie French took the time to share her experience being homeless as a teenager. It's a very raw and honest account of events that Jackie kept secret both at the time and throughout her life. We felt it was vital to include Jackie's story as she told it; a young girl who loved reading and writing, forced onto the street, determined to make it to university and a better life. We thank Jackie for joining us in conversation this month as we highlight homelessness in our communities for Blanket to the Border. Guest host, best selling historical fiction author Victoria Purnam chats to literary legend Jackie French about her new release Becoming Mrs Mulberry. Victoria is an Australian top ten and USA Today bestselling fiction author. Her 2022 novel, The Nurses' War, followed her 2019 book, The Women's Pages, was an Australian bestseller, as were her novels, The Land Girls and The Last of the Bonegilla Girls. Her earlier novel The Three Miss Allens was a USA Today bestseller. She is a regular guest at writers festivals, a mentor and workshop presenter across Australia, and her new book A Woman's Work is out in April 2023. Jackie French AM is an Australian author, historian,  ecologist  and honourary wombat (part time), 2014-2015 Australian Children' Laureate and 2015 Senior Australian of the Year. Some of Jackie's books have sold millions of copies and won over 60 awards in Australia and internationally. Others were eaten by the wombats. Jackie writes for adults, young adults, and even younger humans, on history, ecology, and she is patron of literacy programmes across Australia. Her new release Becoming Mrs Mulberry, is about the secrets we carry, those that we unearth - and those that are too dangerous to tell. Once impoverished medical student Agnes Glock is now the fabulously wealthy Mrs Mulberry. Her estate in the mountains is magnificent, a haven for those too ravaged by the Great War to cope with the society that first condemned them to battle and which now shuns them. The War has, however, stolen Agnes's chance to graduate as a doctor, as well as the fiance she adored. Her husband, Douglas Mulberry, remains shellshocked and unable to speak. Their scandalous marriage is a farce, an act of kindness to keep Douglas's fortune from his uncle's grasp.A chance visit to a circus brings about a mystery in the form of a fairylike child whose guardians claim was brought up by dingoes. The child cannot speak and seems deformed. But Agnes is inexplicably drawn to her and believes she can be cured. The decision to save the child will bring Agnes's lost fiance into her life again, as well as awaken the love of her husband who finds his voice as the three try to solve the mystery of the 'dingo girl'.Agnes has put aside her own life and the dreams she once had. But now she has choices, with the main question the hardest: Who is Mrs Agnes Mulberry? This is such a fabulous chat between two accomplished historical fiction authors with so much gold for both readers and writers. Published in 1991 but set during the great depression, this novel shows that even in the worst times our best selves can be found. Nothing to Fear The story which was inspired by Koller's family history follows Danny, a thirteen year old boy and his journey of self discovery and survival. This book gives us a picture of growing up in the mist of great difficulty. We felt like this novel was the male version of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. There were a lot of similarities with both stories and gave us the feeling that Francie and Danny could of been neighbors and struggling to survive together. One of the reasons we like reading historical fiction is because when we turn the last page we are left with a connection to history through the eyes of a characters we are invested in. One of the historical nuggets we learned through this book was about the "Bonus Army". The "Bonus Army" was a group of 43,000 demonstrators and 17,000 veterans of WWI that were demanding early cash redemption of their service bonus certificates from WWI. The demonstrators were shot at, had belongings burned, and endured tear gas in an attempt to clear them from government property. The group did not give up and in 1936 were given their bonuses early and laid the groundwork for the current GI bill. Jackie French Koller is not just an author but is also an artist. Jackie French is one of Australia's best loved story-tellers. She has written over 200 books across a variety of genres from children's picture books, to chapter books for middle-grade readers, young adult novels and adult fiction along with a swag of non-fiction titles.Jackie's writing and services to Australian literature and literacy has earned her over 60 book awards. And in 2016, Jackie's work was recognised with the award of Member of the Order of Australia. She was Australian Children's Laureate for 2014-2015 and Australian Senior of the Year in 2015.In the southern summer of 2019/2020, when Australia was ravaged by devastating bushfires, Jackie almost lost her family home. Much of the land around her property was burnt before a flood reached them making their property the main source of food and water for hundreds of animals such as wombats, quolls, possums, owls and wallabies to name a few.Inspired by the survival of one wombat who walked out of the fires on charcoaled feet onto her property, weak with thirst and hunger, Jackie penned her latest children's picture book. The book is called “The Fire Wombat” (published by HarperCollins). A brilliant story of survival which was beautifully illustrated by Danny Snell. And I was thrilled to have the opportunity to chat to Jackie about this book and so much more. A fun and wide-ranging chat covering wombats, dyslexia, bushfires and the power of catastrophes to bring humans and animals together, this is an interview you shouldn't miss.

This was a wonderful interview with one of our most generous, talented Australian writers, Jackie French. Here is her bio: Jackie French is a wombat tamer in the Araluen Valley New South Wales, Australia. Sometimes she wrestles dinosaurs, but only when creating stories. Some of her books have won awards or sold millions of copies. Others were eaten by the wombats. She was Australian Children’s laureate 2014-2015 and Senior Australian of the Year 2015. She is dyslexic and still can’t spull. I mean spell.

Words and Nerds: Authors, books and literature.
10. Jackie French: Cooking, Shakespeare and searching for truth in historical fiction.

In this wonderful episode with Jackie French we discuss a broad range of topics beginning with her passion for cooking (check out her website for some incredible recipes), and why authors are compelled to create - even in the kitchen. Jackie also discusses the significance of cheese throughout history, as a symbol of survival and social status. Jackie's extensive knowledge of history and how she brings this knowledge into the present is the highlight of this episode. History encourages us to better understand the present and move forward with greater empathy of others. Jackie is known for creating strong female protagonists in her novels, and we discuss how important it is to provide a voice for the voiceless or who were silenced because of their context. We chat about the wonderful Shakespeare series, how we can find truth within our society, and the hope that humankind will continue to strive to better itself. 'Humans are at their best when challenged.' Jackie discusses her writing process, and how to move students are writers beyond the cliche. It is the perfect episode for avid readers, lovers of history (and wombats), foodies, parents and teachers. Enjoy this bumper episode!

Written by Jackie French and illustrated by Bruce Whatley, we have an adorable story told from the perspective of a Wombat who gets some new neighbors. Rachel & Sam Read a Story is about the fun of reading children's books, and also about how little sense these books make when you read them 20 years later.
