"The sky is falling! The sky is falling!"  -Chicken Little I'm sure she was a very sweet hen. If you're familiar with the original story of Chicken Little (rather than the Disney movie version), you might remember that her real name was Henny Penny. I'd guess she was sincere, cared about her neighbors, took initiative, and was well-respected. But she also tended to make assumptions, jump to conclusions, and share information without verifying its accuracy. Which, if you know how the story ends, cost her - and her feathered friends - quite dearly.  We are in week 8 of our series Hope for Today // Faith for Tomorrow. As we come to the second chapter of 2 Thessalonians, we find the young believers in the same sort of tailspin as Chicken Little's barnyard community. They've been fed misinformation and lies that have left them confused about what they thought they knew, and it's costing them their peace and hope. Shocking Truth: How Media's Shock and Awe Keeps Us on High Alert and Weakens Our Instincts

SHOW NOTES: On this show…we are exploring the shocking truth about how the media's shock and awes keep us on high alert but in actuality, weaken our instincts. Have you ever heard of the tale of Henny Penny? It's a classic Scandinavian folktale where a little chick named Henny Penny gets hit on the head by a falling acorn and panics, believing that the sky itself is falling. Determined to warn the king, Henny Penny sets off on a journey, gathering other animals along the way who are also swept up in the hysteria. However, they eventually meet a clever fox who pretends to join their mission but instead lures them to its den—where it ends up eating them all. And that's the abrupt, cautionary end of their story! OUCH. Ever feel like you're bombarded with so much shocking news that it's hard to know what's an actual emergency? Kind of like poor Henny Penny, who thought the sky was falling over a little acorn! In this episode, we're diving into what happens when the media's constant “shock and awe” leaves us in a state of constant worry, always braced for disaster. We'll explore how this can wear us down and dull our true instincts, and most importantly, we'll uncover ways to take back our peace, sharpen our intuition, and add a little calm to our daily lives. Let's get grounded and learn to spot the real acorns from the falling skies—no foxes allowed! I could have started by pandering today's headlines but to be honest, I didn't want to throw any more fuel on the inferno. I also know it's easy to look to a “simpler” past by saying, “Back in my day we had three channels….and you had to get up to turn them.” But that kind of angle isn't going to grab the youth of today.  So let's just consult the hard-core facts. I wanted to look at a thirty-year span so we could see how our consumption in America has changed over the past three decades. On the Cleveland Clinic's website, I found information about the biology of Always on Alert: Causes and Examples of Hypervigilance Carolyn L Todd gives us some Stressful News Cycle Tips: 13 Ways to Protect Your Mental Health found on Self  Over at Big Think's YouTube channel, Alex Edmans helps you Improve your critical thinking skills in just 6 minutes When we get used to constant alarming headlines and alerts, it can really mess with our ability to spot real danger when it actually matters. Here's how: Slower Response in Emergencies: When we're bombarded with “urgent” information all the time, we start tuning it out—even if it's important. It's like hearing a fire alarm but thinking, “Eh, probably another drill.” This can lead us to hesitate or ignore real emergencies, which can be risky in critical situations. Difficulty Telling Real Risks from Fake Ones: After a while, it becomes hard to figure out what's an actual threat and what's just noise. We might freak out over something minor but brush off something serious, which is not exactly ideal if we want to keep ourselves safe. Health Burnout: Constant alerts and stress keep us in a high-stress state, which isn't good for anyone. When we're always on edge, our bodies start to wear down—anxiety, high blood pressure, poor sleep, you name it. Eventually, we get so used to that stress that we become numb, and when something real happens, our bodies may not respond with the urgency we actually need. Community Safety Slips: Desensitization can even affect a whole community. If everyone starts to shrug off warnings, we can end up ignoring things like severe weather alerts or health warnings. This makes it easier for emergencies to do real damage because no one takes the steps they should to stay safe. Weaker Instincts and Slower Decision-Making: Constant worry over everything can mess with our survival instincts. When we're overloaded, it becomes harder to think clearly and react quickly. We can lose that sharp sense of what's actually dangerous and what's not, which messes with our natural ability to make quick, smart choices. More Apathy and Helplessness: Ever feel like there's just too much going on to make a difference? The more we're bombarded by negativity, the more likely we are to feel helpless. And when that sets in, we're less likely to step up when it actually counts or get involved in efforts that could make a positive change. Normalizing Risky Behavior: Over time, constant exposure to stories about danger or violence can make risky behavior seem normal. We might find ourselves being a bit too casual with things like safety precautions or risky habits because they don't seem like a big deal anymore. This desensitization isn't just about personal safety—it affects whole communities. Breaking out of it means setting some boundaries on our media intake, staying connected to the present, and making a conscious effort to focus on what we can control. That way, we're not only ready for real emergencies but also a lot less stressed out in general. CHALLENGE: Break free from the echo chamber—take a step back, question your sources, and seek out new perspectives that might surprise you. By doing this, you're empowering yourself to see the world in a fuller, richer way, staying curious, informed, and open-minded!   I Know YOU Can Do It!

Do you remember the story of Chicken Little? This is a classic children's story and like a lot of the classic stories there are multiple versions. The basic story goes something like this: An acorn falls from a tree and hits Chicken Little on the head which leads Chicken Little to conclude, erroneously, that the sky is falling. He decides he has to hurry and let the king know about this calamity. Along the way, he collects some of his bird friends - Henny Penny, Lucky Ducky, Goosey Loosey, Turkey Lurkey - who are similarly terrified by the idea of the sky falling and join him on his journey to see the king.  The classic story then comes to a climax in classic gruesome children's story fashion. They meet up with Foxy Loxy who pretends to join them but actually lures them to his den and eats them.  I don't think any of us are going to be eaten by Foxy Loxy today, but Chicken Little's flurry of anxiety is not that different from what many harpists experience in their practice and performance. Chicken Little's misperception of a perfectly natural phenomenon - the acorn falling - created widespread panic which could have been averted with just a little understanding. The panic, anxiety or even chaos that we can feel when we are overwhelmed by performance nerves or when we aren't sure that our practice is getting us anywhere, can be relieved too. All it takes is looking at it differently.  Today, I'm going to talk about ten things that may be causing you anxiety, hopefully not panic, in your practicing and in your playing. I'll give you simple ways to change your thinking about each of these, along with definite action steps to counteract the chaos. Trust me; no matter how nervous or overwhelmed you feel, the sky isn't falling. Every one of those painful acorns could actually grow into a mighty oak that will support your playing, if you decide to plant it rather than run from it. *(and that the wars, climate disasters, democratic upheavals etc today are VERY different to crises in the past)? This episode's question has been asked by too many of you to mention. Many of us have been in situations where we try to talk about the domino'ing of crisis - AI, nuclear, climate, food insecurity, democratic decline, political polarisation, fertility collapse - and get told we're just being a big old Henny Penny, and that crises happen all the time and humanity survives. The belief is that tech innovation, price mechanisms, progress (!) and human ingenuity will find a way to save us. However, this time is categorically different to past near misses and calamities. This week we are studying Ezekiel 7. On last week's episode, our prophet-in-exile addressed the mountains of Israel from the plains of Babylon. In the two episodes before that, Ezekiel spoke to the city of Jerusalem. This week, he expands his message to all “the land of Israel” in a highly evocative sermon (7:1). We are only seven chapters into Ezekiel, but the message is starting to feel like the reverse of the classic folktale of Chicken Little. In the folktale, after an acorn falls on Chicken Little's head, he falsely determines that the sky must be falling. He spreads the news to all his animal friends, like Lucky Ducky and Henny Penny, and total hysteria ensues in the community. Ezekiel had the opposite experience. He knew the proverbial sky was falling and it was not the result of naivety or a misunderstanding of gravity. As God reveals the inevitable devastation of Jerusalem, the panicked tone in Ezekiel's prophecies ratchets up. However, unlike Chicken Little, the Israelites did not take his warnings seriously.

Bible Reading: Psalms 61:3-4; 121:1-8Dark clouds covered the sky, and thunder boomed in the distance. "Look at Henny-Penny, Mom." Josie pointed to the chicken near a little coop by the barn. "She's clucking for her chicks. I guess she wants to protect them from the storm." The mother hen stood in the doorway of the coop, clucking loudly, and the chicks ran to her from all directions. Josie watched as Henny-Penny led her chicks into the coop and settled down, covering them with her wings. A heavy gust of wind and a spattering of rain sent Josie and her mother scurrying into the house."There's a tornado warning for our area," Dad told them. "I just got a notification on my phone. Let's go to the basement."Even in the basement, Josie and her family could hear the storm increasing in fury. The wind raged and howled, thunder roared, and lightning flashed again and again. Josie moved close to her dad, and he put a strong arm around her, hugging her close to his side.At last the storm passed, and they all hurried upstairs, thankful the house was still intact. Josie went out to see if Henny-Penny and her chicks were all right. "They're fine," she reported a little later. She gave her father a hug. "I was really scared, Dad, but I felt safer with your arm around me. I guess I felt like the chicks, safe under their mother's wings.""Henny-Penny sheltered her chicks, Dad sheltered you--and God shelters all His children," said Mom."That's right," Dad said. "You'll go through many kinds of storms in life, Josie. There will be times when things get tough and scary, and I may not always be there to put my arm around you. But just remember what the Bible says about your heavenly Father. Psalm 91 says, 'He shall cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you shall take refuge.'""God has feathers and wings?" asked Josie.Dad smiled. "God wants us to know that He's always there to watch over us in life's storms, so He gives an example He knows you and I can understand. We don't have to be afraid when bad things happen because Jesus has saved us and given us eternal life. No matter what storms we face in life, God is with us." -Mary Rose PearsonHow About You?Are you afraid of something--thunderstorms, the dark, a new school, getting hurt? Auntie Sandy's Storyland

Everyone has heard the story of Henny Penny, and how her foolishness led her to a terrible end. But that is the version from the fox's point of view. In this beautifully illustrated retelling, readers will enjoy a cheery new take on the tale of Henny Penny, who may have been smarter than anyone previously thought. The familiar repetition of silly names and the even sillier antics of the animal characters will win over readers as they have for generations, while Sophie Windham's gorgeous illustrations bring a fresh new perspective to this heroic hen's tale.Purchase this book here.

And then you can hear the original Indian version of the story - The Silly Hare. It's one of the Jataka Tales which are an ancient form of Bhuddist teaching stories – similar to Aesop's Fables. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

with Rev. Clay Nelson Recorded at Auckland Unitarian Church 14th November 2021 After some of my recent musings confronting the disintegration of social cohesion due to Delta and how little COP26 in Glasgow will achieve in reducing greenhouse gases, you might think I'm channelling Henny Penny AKA Chicken Little. You remember the story. After an acorn falls on her head, she panics, running around the barnyard yelling, “The sky is falling! The sky is falling.” Of course, Henny is mistaken, much to the amusement of the other farm animals as they point out the sky is fine. In my defence, I can't be a Unitarian Universalist and channel Henny Penny. For more information see https://aucklandunitarian.org.nz/i-doubt-henny-penny-was-a-unitarian-universalist/

Michigan-born Cameron Blake is most passionate about engaging with the parts of us that are fragile and vulnerable. This is reflected most deeply in his songs, which have touched the hearts of people all over the world. Ranging from gospel-fired, high energy roots rock to introspective folk, Cameron's music is as diverse as his personal story. He began composing and playing the violin at the age of twelve; a talent that would eventually culminate in a Master's Degree from the Peabody Institute of Music in Baltimore. Compassion, curiosity and a fair share of burnout took him beyond the walls of the practice room and out on the street, where he regularly worked and communed with the poor. Sharing what he experienced was the starting point for a new career path as a singer-songwriter. He taught himself piano and guitar, quickly immersed himself in the Baltimore music scene and took his individual brand of chamber folk on the road. After meeting the love of his life and moving back to Michigan to raise a family, Cameron's artistry bloomed into full maturity with the release of Alone On The World Stage (2015). Recorded with nothing more than voice, guitar and occasional piano, the record garnered international acclaim for its subject matter; a heart-rending, poetic and poignant picture of the issues that face the world we live in today. His keen eye for detail and skill for getting inside of characters to reveal flesh and blood human lives continued with the release of Fear Not (2017); a lush, masterfully orchestrated album that tackles the complex subject of fear. The album has earned praise from the likes of The Huffington Post, No Depression and Paste in the US and was released throughout Europe on the Netherlands based record label Continental Song City in 2018. If you've seen him before, you know that Cameron's performances leave a lasting, emotional impact.  Whether it's performing as a front man or a soloist, in a sold-out amphitheater or an intimate club, Cameron gives himself fully to his audience.  Described as “brilliant” (Baltimore City Paper), “impressive” (Local Spins) and “beautiful” (Washington Times), Cameron's soulful baritone voice, powerful lyrics and physical presence make him one of Michigan's most original and compelling live performers. As I look back on my nearly 40 years of life, I can tell you how many different major things just didn't go my way.  When I think back to those things and what I actually wanted, I am completely grateful and thankful that things did NOT go my way.  But I know when we're in the middle of it all, some of those things can feel heart-wrenching and frustrating.  I had a lot of those feelings - especially when it came to my fundraising efforts.  When I was working on one of my biggest fundraisers, I got to the point where I was literally crying out to God for help because I was so emotionally exhausted after trying to find the chairpersons for the event.  I had knocked on every door and thought I had run out of options.  When we finally got the couple we'd wanted to say yes to chairing, the day we sat down to go over the logistics of what it would all look like, the wife looked at me and said, “I have so many things going on in my life right now, I don't need another damn thing.”  And my heart sank.  I knew they weren't the right couple for the event.  As lovely a couple as they were, they had a lot going on in their lives and ultimately, they made the right decision for their family.  It all worked out in the end, but in the moment, I was heartbroken because I'd worked so hard to get to the yes. Through my decades of fundraising, one of the biggest things I've learned is that you cannot control timing.  When someone is meant to have a position on your committee, you can't rush the process.  We want everything to happen in our timing, and sometimes it just doesn't go our way.  I want to talk today about how to cope with this and how to move forward.  First, who says what the right way is?  We often have a vision of what something is going to look like.  There are twists and turns that you don't foresee.  In my previous jobs, there was someone there telling me how I was going to do things – there's this event, happening on this day and time, this is how much money you have to raise and if you don't, then you're a failure.  Over time I came to realize that it really doesn't matter how you get there, just as long as you do.  And sometimes, we don't even know what the end result should look like.  I want to debunk the myth that there is a right way and a wrong way to do things.  As long as we are focused on the mission and the vision is coming true, then victory!  Mission accomplished.  It's not about how we get there, it's the fact that we got there.  You must reframe how you look at certain moments in your life.     It's so much better when you look at life as an experiment.  You're going to try this or that and see how it works.  If it's not working, then you move on to the next trial until you figure it out.  You don't know what life is going to bring, but in the end, it's most likely going to be exactly what you need.  I know you're probably thinking, yeah that's great when you look back, but what about when you're in the heat of it all? It's easy to want to rush through the bad stuff to get to the good stuff.  When my husband and I were working to pay off our student loan debt, we were listening to a lot of Dave Ramsey.  Oftentimes people would call into his show and say, “I can do A, or I can do B.”  And his response was usually, “well, what about C, D, and E?”  There are never just two options when it comes to making decisions.  I want you to take a moment and reflect over the decisions you've made in your life; how often did it end up being a “C” option?  It's about being extra creative about making things work.  Don't go to anger and worry.  Anger might make you feel better in the moment but won't get you anywhere in the end.  As for worry, only 8% of all the things you worry about could actually happen because most of it is made up nonsense in our heads.  When you're going through trying times, think about what could happen. Working out what could go wrong and the worst-case scenario helps you start debunking the Henny Penny story that's going on in your head.  Take a step back and evaluate what is happening.  Realize that you are not alone, and when things don't your way, know that you did the best you could with the information you had at the time.  When you have a lot going on in your mind, I encourage you to journal.  Get the thoughts out of your head and on paper.  If journaling isn't your thing, find a mentor you can talk with to get things off your chest.  Just know that everything is going to turn out ok, and probably go better than you expected.  Life is always going to twist and turn, and you must find a way to enjoy the journey.  Feel empowered by the fact that you get to make decisions.  Start looking for opportunities to learn and grow.  Give yourself some grace and remind yourself that it's all going to work out.    Connect with Mary: Mary Valloni Facebook LinkedIn Fundraising Freedom Roadmap Nonprofit Executive Club

One day Henny-penny was picking up corn in the cornyard when--whack!--something hit her upon the head. 'Goodness gracious me!' said Henny-penny; 'the sky's a-going to fall; I must go and tell the king.' So she went along and she went along and she went along till she met Cocky-locky. 'Where are you going, Henny-penny?' says Cocky-locky. 'Oh! I'm going to tell the king the sky's a-falling,' says Henny-penny. 'May I come with you?' says Cocky-locky. 'Certainly,' says Henny-penny. So Henny-penny and Cocky-locky went to tell the king the sky was falling.
