In 2017, Georgie Mack co-founded the mental health charity Minds @ Work. Her goal was to normalise long-overdue conversations around mental health in the workplace. She also wanted employers to examine how their workplaces were contributing to anxiety, stress and mental ill-health. We've come a long way since then. Today workforce health and wellbeing are priority agenda items for any discerning internal communication and engagement team. But a primary societal fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic is a marked rise in anxiety and low mood. In this special episode, recorded to mark Mental Health Awareness Week, Jen, Dom and Cat chat with Georgie about what more employers should be doing to address mental health issues at work. And of course, the opportunity for internal communicators to add even more value in this vital area.
“I'm a terrible test taker!” “I'm no good at math.” “I'm just not school smart.” “School was not for me.” These are things so many of us say in response to our learning journey within traditional schooling that taught us there was only one right way to be a “good student”. What if you were smart all along? In reality, there are infinite ways to grow your wisdom and understanding of the world around you. In this episode, Nikki discusses the process of unlearning limiting beliefs around your capacity and capability to learn new things or achieve in the face of past “failures.” From the example of NBA champion J.R. Smith's recent docuseries to a recent New York Times article about businesses using personality tests to hire new employees, have a listen to explore your unique learning style. I Invited her back because she has done quite a bit since our last conversation. Check out her website, www.findingmyplanb.com, to see what I mean. And we will be talking about some of the things today. I can't wait. Hi Yvonne… Talk about the blogs on The Agojie People portrayed in The Woman King and the blog on Annie Turnbo Malone. I actually went straight to the Annie Turnbo Malone post because, well there is a lot of history, most of it negative, unfortunately, about black hair. I did not know she developed and patented the straightening comb! Your blogs are very informative Yvonne! Before we get started, can you tell us about the photo project you were a part of, and if there is a link or website we can go to? Tell us about your role or contribution to The Gateway Women's Reignite weekend workshops. And you are training to be a therapist. Do you have a certain topic in mind will it be geared to childless not by choice? And Ted (Talk) tell us about Ted now that you've put the word out. I'll also be taking part in the WhittyGordon Projects 'Edge Of Visibility' Film - The film is about changing the narrative about women over 50 as being past it and recognising and shining light on strong women who are embracing the next phase of their lives in a way that is individual, creative and unapologetic. I know you said you would be doing a Talk at the Recovery College ‘Childlessness' session about on Dealing with the Loss of Motherhood, is that done or is it upcoming? There are people out there in the world today who do not know that they are NeuroDivergent, and may never know in their lifetimes. Not knowing that our brains work differently from that of a lot of other people on this planet, can have impacts on us, on our mental health, and our sense of self-worth; when we constantly compare ourselves to others around us, whose brains do not work as ours do. In this week's episode, Geoff McDonald, mental health campaigner, business transformation consultant and co-founder of Minds@Work, joins Paul in a open conversation about his struggle with being diagnosed with anxiety-fueled depression and how the day his friend took his own life, was a day that changed his life. Previously the Global VP of HR for 25 years at Unilever, Geoff shares his devotion to ending the stigma of depression and anxiety in the workplace, with hopes to inspire leaders to embrace mental health and empower organisations to support the wellbeing of their employees. What are organisations really doing to tackle stigma? Have mental health speakers and initiatives just become a tickbox activity in the workplace? Paul and Geoff speak openly about their experiences in this space and how organisations can be held accountable for the steps, or lack of steps, their taking to tackle these issues.Geoff McDonaldLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/geoff-mcdonald/Minds@Work: http://www.mindsatworkmovement.com/Paul McGregorLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/pmcgregorcom/You can also listen to the full podcast here:https://youtu.be/fgQsr0AuoxI Hosted on Acast. This was a booklet that I found that really explained how the subconscious works written in 1916 by the key to success. Your subconscious mind is a powerful force to be reckoned with. It makes up around 95% of your brain power and handles everything your body needs to function properly, from eating and breathing to digesting and making memories. It's a very strange being when you think about. The subconscious mind isn't creative, it doesn't understand jokes, and it can remember everything you have ever done, said or witnessed. The remaining 5% of your brain, the conscious mind, as the sole purpose of interacting with the physical world. However, by taking control of your subconscious mind, by becoming aware and in sync with it, you can be sure to take back control of your life and basically achieve anything you want to. This is because when your subconscious mind and your conscious mind is working together to achieve a common goal, you can believe that it will happen. This video shows this process. Your brain is built to reinforce and regulate your life. Your subconscious mind has something called a homeostatic impulse, which regulates functions like body temperature, heartbeat and breathing. Brian Tracy explained it like this: "Through your autonomic nervous system, [your homeostatic impulse] maintains a balance among the hundreds of chemicals in your billions of cells so that your entire physical machine functions in complete harmony most of the time." But what many people don't realize is that just as your brain is built to regulate your physical self, as does it try to regulate your mental self. Your mind is constantly filtering and bringing to your attention information and stimuli that affirms your preexisting beliefs (this is known in psychology as confirmation bias) as well as presenting you with repeated thoughts and impulses that mimic and mirror that which you've done in the past. Your subconscious mind is the gatekeeper of your comfort zone. It is also the realm in which you can either habituate yourself to expect, and routinely seek the actions that would build and reinforce, the greatest success, happiness, wholeness or healing of your life. Here, a few ways to start retraining your mind to be your ally, not your enemy. >Today’s episode is a solo show, as Pilar was part of two conversations she wanted to share with you straight away. And she also took the opportunity to ask the community managers at Minds@Work to tell you about their next event. The episode was prompted by a message that Pilar received from a friend of hers. His team is currently colocated, but some of the team members would like to go remote; plus he’s realising that the business might benefit from recruiting in other geographical areas. He’s wondering whether he should turn into a hybrid team, or a fully distributed one. The benefits of being a hybrid team, within an organisation: You have a presence in headquarters as a team. Those staying in HQ can still have spontaneous interactions, which could be a point of connection for some team members. You might have a team member who acts as a connector, between remote and colocated; some people are really good at keeping everyone together, regardless. A lot of communication is electronic anyway, so it might be easy to follow visible teamwork practices. ">The Drawbacks: Different visibility in the organisation between team members can cause friction, as some people might be missing out on networking and promotion opportunities, and other stuff going on in the organisation. Clusters might form (remote vs colocated) in an unhealthy way. Feelings of inequality and isolation. People in the office could also feel isolated; if some members can go remote because they have a comfortable place at home, while others don’t, and so have no choice but to stay in HQ. And remote team members can easily feel like they’re being forgotten about. Benefit of being fully distributed: Everyone’s in the same boat, which has lots of benefits. Downsides: It could be expensive if the team has different overheads than the organisation: a coworking budget, new equipment, expenses which are difficult to explain in some organisations More change to manage. A hybrid team can be more organic, but a fully remote team will need a lot of adapting to. Team could lose visibility in the organisation, but you can develop a strategy to avoid this. 13.50 How should you have difficult conversations in a virtual team? After a few Twitter interactions, here are those things you should consider when having a difficult conversation: Do you and your team member feel comfortable with video, how do you best connect with the other person? What role will emotions play? For example, is it important to see the other person’s emotions/reactions; or is the expectation that we don’t want others to see how we react? What is the norm in your team? If you always use video, probably video is best. If audio is the norm, the audio might be best. Or you might want to suggest something different to elevate the importance of the conversation… (but which can make the other person more nervous…) What are individual’s preference? You need to know yourself and your team members Think about all this BEFORE you have to have a conversation. Be prepared. (Even share this episode with your team to kick off the conversation!) If you’ve never worked remotely or managed people virtually, go carefully through the advice you read or are given, there is no one way of doing this. 24.15 Hear about An Event about Mental Health in Remote Working April Doty and Sarah Bingham tell us about the Minds@Work event Minds@Work LAB on Mentally Healthy Remote Working will take place in London on 17 September 2019 6.30pm BST, and online. Is your company keeping its employees’ mental health in check? Well, they should be. In today’s episode of the Mental Health Revolution Podcast, Kate talks to Geoff McDonald, the co-founder of Minds@Work, about the importance of awareness and open discussions on mental health in a corporate setting. Some people are afraid to disclose their mental distress to HR. Companies should be more concerned and outspoken about mental health in the workplace. Geoff also emphasizes that mentally healthy workplaces tend to perform better and more efficient. KEY TAKEAWAYS Geoff was diagnosed with anxiety depression. Knowing that he's loved by so many people is what saves him during dark moments. It's time to create images of mental health out there that's positive - not seeing it as a taboo topic. This could convince people to have a check and take care of their mental health also. Mental health should be also taught inside classrooms. Kids should be educated early on about how to take care also of their mental health. We shouldn't wait for a crisis to come first before informing them about it. Why the well-being programs don't work? 1- There's no organization accountability to people being healthy. 2- There's no individual accountability. In the construction industry alone, there have been 283 suicides per year during the 5 years. Though the construction industry is giving out health and safety insurances, especially on-site, there's nothing allotted to retraining mental health. Some companies require reconstruction. The should look at well-being as a strategic enabler to drive performance of the business. Better communication between executives and employees will also help to grow the business. Importance of recovery daily. Geoff sees to it that he finds a few minutes in a day to recover. BEST MOMENTS "Let's create a new positive narrative around mental health so that people will want to engage." "I don't think leaders in organization are emotionally committed to the concept which is a healthier energized individual performs better." "It is about as we begin to try and address the stigma and tell people what to do, we have to be conscious about the level of stigma." VALUABLE RESOURCES mindsatworkmovement.com ABOUT THE HOST Kate Ashley-Norman is creator of Positive Mind Management, the host of The Mental Health Revolution podcast, and a passionate speaker and trainer about our emotional wellbeing. She is seeking to change the nature and tone of the conversation around mental health for business owners, their workplaces and ultimately in their personal lives. Kate has spent the last 25+ years running her own businesses, initially working running a six figure PR consultancy agency, then building a multi-million pound international property portfolio. Latterly she has dedicated her time to studying emotional mastery and positive psychology, while bringing up four children, and has used her experience and knowledge to create the Positive Mind Management programme specifically for entrepreneurs and small businesses. The knowledge Kate has collated will help you to not only better understand your emotions, it will help you both improve it, and supercharge it during those more challenging times when emotional wellbeing can be compromised. Fear, procrastination, overwhelm, powerlessness, self worth – empire building is a hugely challenging process in its own right. The more power you hold within your own emotions, the more you can harness the power of those emotions, good and bad, to the benefit of your business and life in general. Hugely practical and applicable, this revolutionary approach to mental health is putting the power back into the hands of each and every individual. Remove the Guesswork: Health, Fitness and Wellbeing for Busy Professionals
Are you dealing with feelings of disenfranchisement, unfulfillment, and boredom at work? How are you dealing with stress at work on a daily basis? Wellbeing is a real buzzword at the moment, and wellbeing in the workplace is not only an interesting and timely topic to discuss but certainly a topic that deserves our attention. Visit https://www.bodyshotperformance.com/podcasts-blog for complete show notes of every podcast episode Topics Discussed in this Episode: The definition of wellbeing Things that are important for wellbeing The problems facing companies today with regards to wellbeing (absenteeism, presenteeism, leaveism) Exploring solutions to these problems The difficult strains on mental health and physical health that can come from stress and overwork Why wellbeing in the workplace matters Key Takeaways: Wellbeing is really a state of being comfortable, healthy or happy. A part of wellbeing is mental health. The World Health Organization defines mental health as “a state of wellbeing in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with enormous stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully and is able to make a contribution to his or her community.” Wellbeing in the workplace, specifically, includes a job that is challenging, rewarding, fulfills a clear need or purpose and has a support network within it. It is also feeling that you’re a part of something — a team, a common cause, or an overall sense of purpose. A healthy and happy workforce creates a culture that increases employee retention and engagement, and that’s a huge competitive advantage for any company. Companies must have a mutually inclusive duty of care starting from the top of the corporate ladder. Meaning that the employee has a duty of care to ensure that they’re fit for the rigors of business, and the employer has a duty of care to ensure that they are reasonable in their expectations and creating a working environment that does not preclude health or wellbeing. Action Steps for Employers/Companies: Prioritize wellbeing in the working world. Ensure that you have an environment that is set up for an active day. Set policies around email after working hours and policies around working at weekends or during holidays. Leanne said: “It’s toxic to every cell in your body to keep at something you’re essentially fighting against.” “Wellbeing is going to be the way that companies differentiate.” Thanks for listening! Remove the Guesswork: Health, Fitness and Wellbeing for Busy Professionals
My guest this week is Geoff McDonald. Geoff is the former Global VP for Marketing, Communications, Sustainability & Talent at Unilever, and now defines his purpose as addressing and ending the stigma of depression and anxiety in the workplace and helping organisations play their positive role in the world. This man is a bundle of energy, and you can sense that in the way he conveys his philosophies and ideas in our conversation. We talk about why energy is so lacking in the workplace, why we need to keep our minds healthy and fit in the same way most of us do our bodies, how we can start to change the corporate culture and what you can do as an individual and if you’re an HR Professional, what you can do within your organisation to remove the stigma and instigate change.
