El ahorro te permite cometer errores. Esta es una de las muchas enseñanzas que me llevo de la charla con Juan. Cuando presidía Telefónica, fue tildado de arrogante por decir que la compra de Antena 3 representaba “solamente 17 días de cash-flow”. Seas una empresa o una familia, el flujo de caja positivo ofrece la libertad máxima. Te permite explorar y, por tanto, equivocarte. Este es, al final del día, el lujo definitivo. El escenario opuesto sería la deuda. La vida se vuelve más estresante en ella, quedándote sin margen de error. El problema de la deuda, desde mi perspectiva, es que reduce el número de opciones futuras y eso impacta en tu grado de desarrollo. Si mañana se presentara una oportunidad inesperada, no podrías ir a por ella, teniendo esas horas ya ocupadas con compromisos previos. Vivimos en una economía azarosa y la lección de Juan es que pelees por tu libertad de movimientos, añadiendo activos que generen rentas. Resource Dependence Theory (RDT) represented a significant departure from extant literature on management and organization studies in the 1970s. Prior to the publication of Jeffrey Pfeffer and Gerald's The External Control of Organizations: A Resource Dependence Perspective in 1978, the social context and environment surrounding organizations were little studied. In the book, Pfeffer & Salancik argued that the behaviors or organizations and their managers were driven by the context, because of the need for resources in order to survive. Thus, managerial decisions were based far more on how to manage interdependencies with external social actors than what would presumably lead to objectively better outcomes. They believe RDT explains more accurately the kinds of managerial behaviors observed and how organizations chose (and fired) their executives than other theories of the time.

“Most leaders understand their influence on team members' lives during work hours, but often enough, they don't think about how their leadership affects team members outside of the workplace as well.” Barry-Wehmiller CEO, Bob Chapman, wrote this in a blog post on trulyhumanleadership.com titled “Wellness and Work: What's the ROI of Caring?” The connection between leadership and health has been a major point in his speeches over the past few years. In fact, he once told a group of CEOs that they were the cause of the healthcare crisis in our country. A friend of ours, Jeffrey Pfeffer has a book, Dying for a Paycheck, which is a deep dive into the connection between the workplace and poor health. He had this to say about his book: "I tell people all the time...The workplace is killing people, and nobody cares. And to me, the second part is worse than the first. We do not care about human health and well-being. We do not care about human psychological physical health. We do not care about people. And until we change that orientation, it's going to be ugly." Much of Jeffrey's book reinforces many of the things we've been saying for awhile. On this podcast, he talks about his book and explains why he thinks the workplace is killing people.

Here's how they define it: Burn-out is a syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. Quite a while ago, we learned from the Centers for Disease Control that your immediate supervisor is more important to your health than your primary care doctor. If burn-out results from chronic workplace stress, we're seeing that to be true. And it makes sense. 74% of people say the workplace is the leading cause of stress. On Monday mornings, there's a 20% increase in heart attacks.
