“I had planned how to die – I didn’t know how to live.” In this episode of a Mental Health Revolution in the Workplace, Marilyn Hawes explains the impact of the grooming and sexual abuse of her three sons, and how her ‘greatest calling’ came out of the pain is generated. We go on to talk about how the after-effects can seep far and wide into adulthood and the workplace, and what employees can do to counteract these effects. Founder and CEO of Freedom From Abuse Marilyn Hawes is a former music teacher whose three sons were sexually groomed and assaulted by their headteacher, a close family friend. In 2002 the police knocked on her door at home to say “your three boys are being sexually abused by the headteacher at the school where you are deputy's head”. Having pleaded guilty the judge gave the headteacher a suspended sentence. Marilyn took the case to the court of appeal and he was sent down. Because Marilyn did not want other families to go through the trauma she and her family had suffered she began “Enough Abuse”. In 2013 it became a charity and in September 2017 she was awarded “The Most Inspirational Woman of 2017” for the work she has done in educating schools, parents, and children in “grooming” the preamble to child sexual abuse. In May 2018 Marilyn set up “Freedom From Abuse”. Because of the increasing demand from families and the need to act quickly she decided to move from a charity to a company. So she can deliver a more comprehensive service more efficiently to both prevent abuse and support the abused to rebuild their lives and THRIVE. As Marilyn’s own knowledge and expertise grew, she became more involved professionally in the world of child protection and safeguarding and set up the charity Enough Abuse UK in 2004. Today, when she is not presenting training in schools up and down the country, Marilyn is to be found delivering her pragmatic views about child abuse on the likes of BBC Radio and TV, local radio stations, Sky News, ITN, and LBC. Marilyn Hawes has been Vice Chairman of Governors for nine years at a C of E aided school. In this episode of the Mental Health Revolution Podcast, Jean Davison tells of the disturbing chain of events that unfolded when, as a teenager, she became a 'voluntary' patient in the psychiatric system (1968-1974). Heavy drugs and electric shock treatment reduced her to a zombie. Years later, she found she had been given a 'schizophrenia' diagnosis immediately on entering the system. Since 'jumping out of the net', she married, and while working full-time as a medical secretary, she studied at evening classes, gaining a 1st class degree in combined studies (psychology and literature) and, later, an advanced certificate in counselling skills. After twelve years as a mental health support worker and trainer for Mind, she is now enjoying devoting much of her time to her childhood ambition of becoming a writer. Six months of non-stop intrusion followed from the media, a high-profile murder trial, and then the stark reality of trying to find a job at the age of 55. In this episode of The Mental Health Revolution, Rob talks candidly about how he coped emotionally with this traumatic event, and what drives him now, both professionally and personally. John Hewitt is the CEO and chairman of the Glazerite Group of window manufacturers. John tragically lost his daughter Kelly to suicide, when she was just 24 years old. He has since dedicated his time and passion to raising awareness of mental health issues and has created the charity We Mind and Kelly Matters, raising £125,000 to help fund mental health initiatives in schools. In this update to his first podcast interview, John talks about the recent fundraising bike ride he organised from John O’Groats to Lands End, and how the experience of reaching out for help when struggling is a reflection of how we need to do the same when the going gets tough in life. KEY TAKEAWAYS John and his team were overwhelmed by the amount of support and encouragement from complete strangers during the course of the ride. Although physically prepared, John realised that the emotional support of his team for him to be able to cope emotionally. The ride itself was like a metaphor for life – team members who were struggling would cry out for help, and they would all come together to help and encourage them through the pain. No matter what pain they experienced at the moment, that pain would be forgotten at the end of the day. There is a real stigma for men like John not to show emotion – he is openly emotional, and wants others to know there is no shame in that. John is looking to educate children in schools and wants businesses to get involved, as the children are the employees of the future. Kate talks to Chaya Grossberg, a consultant specialising in the treatment of people coming off psychiatric medication, whose own journey began with an extensive and damaging relationship with these drugs. Fortunately, Chaya was able to connect with a community determined to help people release themselves from the hold of this medication. Since then, Chaya has become a fierce proponent of ensuring that others can take the same steps she did. In this frank conversation, Chaya shares her own journey, as well as some of the advice that changed her life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Having freed herself from psychiatric drugs, and realising the benefits of doing so, Chaya has made it her mission to speak out whenever possible on the subject. The “cocktail” of drugs that are prescribed in most cases build in terrifying intensity. Each drug seems to be added in order to counteract the negative side-effects of the previous one, and all of a sudden, the patient finds themselves taking many different drugs each designed to battle the others. While coming off the drugs, Chaya faced extreme panic attacks, an intense sense of discomfort and restlessness, extreme insomnia, nausea and seizures. In the US, around twenty million people are on psychiatric drugs. There is a sense that some would like people to remain on this medication, as it’s a huge money-spinner. Peer support is incredibly important. We need so many more systems than there currently are, but the ones we already have are crucial to effective withdrawal. People need to create their own narrative, their own story. By expressing their own experiences in words that feel true, re-synthesis can take place BEST MOMENTS ‘It felt like the narratives around psychiatry and medications were still being formed’ ’That’s why they call it a cocktail; it’s a little bit of this with a little of that’ ‘Is it right to take a drug for your mood and emotions?’ ’There’s a stigma around critiquing psychiatry’ ‘You are almost falling backwards into the system' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Mental Health Revolution Podcast Chaya Grossberg: Freedom From Psychiatric Drugs - https://chayagrossberg.com/2355-2/ Chaya Grossberg - Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/chayagrossberg/?hl=en Chaya Grossberg - YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6nm1hQ7fJgFAOTQMgaDrnQ ABOUT THE HOST Kate Ashley-Norman is creator of Positive Mind Management, the host of The Mental Health Revolution podcast, and a passionate speaker and trainer about our emotional wellbeing. Kate is joined by Homeworker Magazine creator Louise Goss, to discuss the issues that may arise from working from home; issues that are becoming ever more common and prevalent as more of find ourselves able to conduct business from our homes. Often we do not consider the detrimental effects upon our wellbeing that can arise from being a homeworker, such as isolation or a sense of distance. Kate and Louise discuss these issues, and offer helpful guidance as to how you can prevent them from impacting your emotional wellbeing. KEY TAKEAWAYS Loneliness is very common among those who work from home. This method of working is very attractive to those who consider themselves introverted. A lack of official structure can also be a challenger, especially when transitioning from a work environment, which is built upon structure. By implementing your own structures, times and goals, you can drive yourself to do better and help to differentiate your work time from your free time. It generally seems to be that men prefer to work from home more than women. Perhaps this is due to the seemingly ingrained belief that men are the breadwinners, and must be the ones who work, and in the main, jobs have always been external. Our working environments at home can impact on the way we feel, especially due to the “inspirational” home workspaces shown on social media. It’s important to reintegrate with people often, as it can refresh our mindset. You can do this by working outside, or arranging to see someone else. Try booking yourself into a co-working space, even if only for a few hours. Switching off from work can be just as hard as switching on. Remember to finish working completely each day and spend time on yourself, and with your family. BEST MOMENTS ‘It’s funny isn’t it, how we can manage to do so much without actually talking to anyone’ ’Taking that time out for yourself can take a backseat’ ‘Just going to a different place can spark something. It can inspire you in a different way’ ‘I’ve always liked the idea of “healthy neglect"' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Mental Health Revolution Podcast Contact details for Louise Goss: You can subscribe to the Homeworker Magazine here: https://www.thehomeworker.com/ You can join the Facebook community here: https://www.facebook.com/thehomeworkermag/ ABOUT THE HOST Kate Ashley-Norman is creator of Positive Mind Management, the host of The Mental Health Revolution podcast, and a passionate speaker and trainer about our emotional wellbeing. In this episode of The Mental Health Revolution Kate joins Gary who is one of Kate’s old friends and unofficial mentor to discuss how Gary stays positive regardless of his past and how it may have affected him. KEY TAKEAWAYS People tend to hold onto things from their past to use as an excuse to not move forward. Staying positive and being a successful businessman has been very incremental and certainly hasn’t been an instant thing. Gary explains that marrying a good woman is crucial and it’s helped him learn crucial lessons alongside being the stable influence behind any of the success that they’ve had. For Gary his motivation has never been about the money, it’s always been about winning, being successful and having a good strong harmonious team. You’re never going to always win every deal so there’s no benefit or mileage by boiling the person that’s lost the deal out. But ensure you learn from it for the next time. People want, like and appreciate consistency. Social media often gives people that constancy through likes. However, a lot of younger people often now don’t see what is going on in the real world, which has fed the strong need to have success but not put in the work. BEST MOMENTS ‘Who motivates the motivator?’ ‘By being incremental you’re more able to keep your feet on the ground and it’s more sustainable.’ ‘Some people take opportunity and others are unable to see it’ ‘The by-product of success is generally happiness or financial gain’ ‘Great teams recognise that not everyone can be great everyday’ VALUABLE RESOURCES You can find out about Gary’s charity GM Fundraising through the website https://www.gmfundraising.co.uk/ ABOUT THE HOST Kate Ashley-Norman is creator of Positive Mind Management, the host of The Mental Health Revolution podcast, and a passionate speaker and trainer about our emotional wellbeing. After spending thirty years in the corporate world, Sally Brady had forgotten how to live. Work had become her life, and the stress and overwhelm was taking its toll on every aspect of her life. After a particularly terrifying night, where things became far too much, Sally knew that something had to change. Sally found the answer in a coach, who caused her to recognise that the fixes being offered were nothing more than temporary, and that the corporate environment was bad for her health. Listen as Sally describes her fascinating journey, one that led from a place of darkness to a place of hope. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sally’s former corporate place of work were not well enough equipped to deal with mental health issues when they arose. This problem is very common and can be avoided is more preventative practices are put in place. Sally discovered that many companies advocate the use of anti-depressants in what seems like an attempt to mask the troubling pressure that employees are being put under. The business that Sally has founded aims to provide coaching and real support for people who may be going through the same levels of overwhelm and burnout that she faced. By recognising her own support network, Sally feels recovered from her ordeal, and by providing others with the same liberation, she hopes to replicate that feeling of security and support throughout the industry. Kate talks to Rob Smallbone, successful property investor, author, and host of the Property Nomads podcast, about his life and travels, and his experiences with mental health issues. Rob candidly discusses how these issues have affected him, and how they continue to affect many entrepreneurs, as well as the tools he used to overcome these challenges. KEY TAKEAWAYS When you go through something like depression, visiting the doctor often results in a diagnosis, but unless we are given counselling, we often then work through the depression on our own. Sometimes merely being diagnosed is enough to get the ball rolling. Travel altered Rob’s mindset completely and really opened his eyes to the many possibilities of life. It also changed his perceptions about happiness and quality of life. Rob keeps his demons at bay by daily reminding himself of everything he has to be grateful for. He does this by means of a “Gratitude Jar”, into which he deposits at least three things for which he grateful each day. Research shows that when a person has something to care for and live for, it can dramatically increase their life expectancy. Senior citizens given plants to care for are shown to live for 30% longer than those who are lonely or feel they have no purpose. Rob’s way of dealing with an issue is to constantly learn, ask questions, to analyse the issue in detail and construct an answer as to the how and why. Discipline in terms of connecting to the world via social media and the internet has helped Rob to focus on the more important things. Even the smallest of interactions can lead to a rabbit hole of connections that can lead to entire banks of time being lost. BEST MOMENTS ‘If I’d been a bit more open and honest about things, then they could’ve played out differently’ ’That gratitude attitude is really important’ ‘Anything that happens in life is objective. But how we deal with it is subjective’ ‘Perfection is not attainable, but if we aim for perfection we end up with excellence' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Mental Health Revolution Podcast ABOUT THE GUEST Rob Smallbone is a #1 Amazon Bestselling Author, Speaker, Co-host of The Property Nomads Podcast, and Property Investor. Suicide is devastating. There are no answers to the many questions, and the fall out for those left behind will last a lifetime. In this episode of The Mental Health Revolution Podcast, Kate talks to businessman John Hewitt to share his own experiences dealing with the loss of his daughter Kelly. He felt it was crucial to bring awareness about the effects of dealing with mental health issues, to both keep Kelly’s memory alive, and to help others going through similar situations. As a result, We Mind & Kelly Matters, was established to with several events lined up in the coming months specifically to raise funds for Mind and SOBS (contact details below). KEY TAKEAWAYS Kelly Hewitt’s dream since she was a child was to be a police officer. She studied, passed the exam, and started working at Bedford Prison in April 2017. In October 2017, Kelly was very distressed she was when she witnessed a prisoner’s suicide. It wasn’t just one instance; prison guards witness harm and violence often among the prisoners. She eventually started shunning away her friends and family unintentionally, and started isolating herself. In December 2018, Kelly was supposed to meet up with her family but she didn’t show up. She wasn’t answering the calls of her sister which was very unlike her. Aside from the stress she’s receiving from the workplace, Kelly also has past traumas and has recently experienced a financial problem. John recalls how sweet and gleeful Kelly was when she was a child. It was a lot to handle for her. Most of the time it’s the service providers who are always on the frontline that are in need of maintaining their mental well-being. John wants to spread the word about mental health issues through the charity We Mind and Kelly Matters. Right now, they’re trying to collect funds to reach a larger number of audiences. BEST MOMENTS “There were people who are aware she was struggling; there were people who knew she was self-harming.” “If we see the signs and we don’t act on it, then that’s not right.” “When you lose somebody, you don’t get over it. “I will be who I am, and I’m basically in charge of that now.” It’s hard to believe that some of us have lived full of horrors and traumas with our biological family. You’re lucky and privileged if you didn’t have to go through these. But for some who did, how do they look pass them so they can also live their lives fully? In this episode of The Mental Health Revolution Podcast, Kate talks to Liz Scott, a clinical psychologist and the author of This Never Happened, about her experiences dealing with her family secrets, how it helped her finder her identity by trying to unravel the mysteries, how she found much more compassion while on her quest, and many more. Discover how it affected her well-being and relationships when you tune in. KEY TAKEAWAYS There were too many untold secrets in Liz’s family that then affected the state of their relationship. The mystery also has become detrimental to the health and well-being of each; personal identity and personal development were difficult to achieve. For example, Liz didn’t know she was Jewish in her early 30s. Her roots and culture are a great indication of how she grew up, why she looks this way and what not. Liz had to live with her narcissistic mother all her life. It was difficult to grow a strong bond between them. Her mother was also having a hard time dealing with her inner demons. What did Liz learn after writing the book? She found increased compassion for her parents, a stronger sense of where she fits in the world, and the ability to live with unanswered questions. ‘Professionals must be given the opportunity to look after themselves holistically in order to fulfil their roles looking after and being responsible for others’ In this episode Kate is in conversation with Dr. Shan Hussain author of ‘The Big Prescription’ a book which shares the same ethos of the Thrive program, taking a common-sense approach to looking after your mental health. They discuss the alarming statistics surrounding the rates of suicide amongst those in the medical profession and how understanding our own mental health and how we manage stress is key to good mental health. KEY TAKEAWAYS Why do you feel within the medical profession the rate of suicide is so high? Medical professionals may have concerns around highlighting issues around mental health, worrying that their own competency may be called into question We do need to place an emphasis on practitioner wellbeing because if we can’t look after ourselves it’s very challenging to effectively look after others. There can be a stacking effect created across a medical practitioner’s day through the complex and often upsetting situations that they deal with. It's important to have self-care and self-passion spending time at the end of the day unwinding and decompressing from the things dealt with and the emotions you have had to cope with. Are things changing? Conversations are beginning to take place. It's at an early stage and we need to do what we can to progress these conversations and at the same time acknowledge that the problem lies with the increasing amount of work doctors are required to do. Demand is rising, expectations are rising, complaints are rising and in the midst of this are practitioners who have not had any real increase in remuneration in real terms for 15 years coupled with a loss of 20% of the front-line workforce It's not about unlearning what we already know it's about getting some balance and understanding as to where the stress is arising from and what we can do about it There are only 3 types of stress; Physical stress on the body Emotional and mental stress Social stress coming from the environment We can’t fix an emotional problem with a physical solution and we must streamline our approaches according to what the source of the problem is. BEST MOMENTS ‘People are now more comfortable talking about mental health and we are seeing more empathy towards others’ ‘Learning to change how we perceive the environment and doing our best to manage it in a healthier way’ ‘Whatever makes you feel relaxed do that activity on a regular basis’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Mental Health Revolution Podcast Enduring Health podcast The Big Prescription book by Dr. Shan Hussain ABOUT THE GUEST Dr. Shan Hussain is an author, general practitioner, health coach, wellness advisor and ambassador to the World Health Innovation Summit. Kate is talking with Teresa Brooks who has recently launched the Coach magazine and is a business coach and NLP practitioner. They discuss Teresa’s own experiences with mental health and the changing conversations and perceptions of mental health. This interview provides a window into an individual’s personal experiences and opens the discussion around prevention through coaching, education, personal understanding and empowerment. KEY TAKEAWAYS Business is personal and there is a difference between mental health issues and the blocks people face in business. It’s about the person; I’m coaching the person behind the business, not the business, you can't coach a business. Early in my adult life my endeavours to move forward brought a huge amount of pressure and stress which resulted in me crashing in all areas of my life. I was doing things, but I wasn’t connected anymore, everything was broken It was scary and very tiring; you cannot have any understanding of it unless you have experienced it. When you are in a state of depression you feel out of control about everything around you. People need a reason, a validation, an explanation and if you are suffering from a mental health issue it's not easy to describe how and what you are feeling. The forums are people all going through the same experiences and this can offer support but lead to you being kept in the same place when what you need to do is work on yourself Ultimately we all want to be heard, understood and helped when you find a place where you feel listened to it can seem like a safe haven. Lots of people will need extra support in their lives for a short period People can be helped and there are hugely varying degrees of mental health With the work I do, I'm not just listening to their words I'm listening to them, everything about them, I'm watching their physiology In children, mental health should be dealt with in ways that empower them and teaches what they can do to feel better and more powerful about themselves For children, it's about developing self-awareness and understanding who they are. It's important we think about our children the next generation must be able to live full and happy lives You are never too old to get to grips with how your mind works. There is always something to learn BEST MOMENTS ‘ is massively supportive, but we still worry about what others think’ ‘The more knowledge and learning we have from an early age the better’ ‘I continued to suffer from anxiety attacks because I was so scared it was going to come back’ ‘I have always been able to express myself but when I got to a place where I couldn’t speak about it I wrote everything down’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Mental Health Revolution Podcast You can contact Teresa via her website: https://www.teresabrookscoaching.com/ You can subscribe to Coach Magazine view the website: https://www.teresabrookscoaching.com/coach-magazine/ ABOUT THE HOST Kate Ashley-Norman You can support The Mental Health Revolution, and contribute to the conversation in the following closed Facebook group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/238516643507943/ You can search Kate Ashley-Norman on any of these platforms – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Kate talks to adventurer, explorer and speaker, Richard Matthews about the positive effect of outdoor pursuits upon our mental heath. Richard has personally experienced and seen how all our mental states fluctuates as well as our understanding of other people around the world. From heading in to countries that the media say are dangerous and full of terrible people to find that this is not the case. Being outdoors can massively help the mental state of everyone. KEY TAKEAWAYS After a severe breakup in 2014, Richard found himself suffering from crippling depression that impacted his life greatly. After a two and a half month trip to Mongolia, Richard found himself changed, as though his depression had been left on the trip instead of returning with him. Through this experience, Richard believes that others can benefit from adventures in the outdoors, which can serve to remove the focus from the internal anxieties that may be impacting our lives. Richard’s theory is that by feasting upon the sensory overloads of different cultures from around the world, our own minds are given to letting go of the depressions that weigh us down. Cutting himself off from the world on a solo trip to Slovenia gave Richard time to think and to focus upon himself. It also gave him the opportunity to realise that he could handle being alone. BEST MOMENTS ‘I’m trying to promote the idea that everyone should get outdoors. The outdoors is an incredible place for mental wellbeing’ ‘Travelling through different cultures is an overload of the mind’ ‘It’s tough to be alone’ ‘Mental health isn’t something to be tolerated, but something to push through’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Mental Health Revolution Podcast ABOUT THE GUEST Richard grew up living in seaside town of Teignmouth, Devon. Growing up on the coast, he embraced water based adventures from young age! These included sea swimming, kayaking and canoeing. Changing from water he then took to the land and air getting involved with Ten Tors taking him all over Dartmoor and beyond. Simultaneously Richard joined the Air Training Corps were he had many adventures, flying, shooting, mountaineering and learning a whole host of skills, then went on to gain 30+ hours flying and a few hours solo flights. The Arctic Survival Challenge in Sweden was the first international challenge for Richard. The Challenge entailed sleeping outside in temperatures as low as -35°C, in snow holes and shelter from the forest. The Mongol Rally in 2015. This journey from Teignmouth, UK to Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia was my first big adventure into the unknown. We drove through Iran, Turkmenistan, Mongolia, and nearly all of Russia, all in a 1996 Nissan Micra. This trip is eye-opening to all that experience it, to have a look into the diverse cultures outside of Western Europe. www.rmadventures.co.uk Facebook: @theRMAdventures Instagram: theRMAdventures ABOUT THE HOST Kate Ashley-Norman is creator of Positive Mind Management, the host of The Mental Health Revolution podcast, and a passionate speaker and trainer about our emotional wellbeing. In this episode, Kate is speaking to Eileen Forrestal founder of the Get Up & Go Diaries. They discuss the importance of understanding who you are and what you want in a world with ever increasing unfiltered information being directed towards us throughout each day. If you want to learn more about the journey Eileen has made and the philosophy behind the inspirational diaries and journals then tune in now. KEY TAKEAWAYS The Get Up and Go Diaries represent a philosophy for life encouraging reflection, encouragement, peace, generosity, cooperation, acceptance, forgiveness and love. They use words as powerful tools and encourage us to consider the words we use both when communicating with others and those we speak internally to ourselves. Questioning is so important for mental health. People need to be questioning on a deep level why they feel the way they do. Understanding what is happening is vital, it enables you to take step by step, day by day actions. We are social creatures, but in today’s society things are becoming very personalised where others have to come into our sphere. We need to be getting out there and in contact with others. We need to be able to filter what we want as the information stream is now huge. You have to get to rock bottom and ask yourself the question, is this where I want to be? We as human beings all have innate abilities. It’s about how you can best use those abilities to get where you want to be. If we are stuck the next step to get unstuck it is the critical step. Who do I need to talk to, what do I need to do? There are all sorts of normal and it's important that everyone gets the chance to be who they want to be. We are all perfect as imperfect human beings. You have to learn yourself; what sort of person you want to be? BEST MOMENTS ‘I’m engaging and responding to what’s happening around me’ ‘I had loads of ideas but they were stuck in my head’ ‘What else is there? What could I do? It’s the importance of curiosity’ ‘Medication can be valuable but the explosion of its use currently cannot be the answer’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Mental Health Revolution Podcast www.getupandgodiary.com ABOUT THE HOST You can support The Mental Health Revolution, and contribute to the conversation in the following closed Facebook group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/238516643507943/ You can search Kate Ashley-Norman on any of these platforms – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. ‘Normal doesn’t actually exist we are all normal in lots of different ways ‘ In this episode, Kate is in conversation with Neville Wright, who built ‘Kiddicare’, into the largest independent baby shop in the UK and is currently writing his second book ‘The Fleas that Jumped Higher’ Neville reflects on his experiences both as an employer responsible for staff and customers and as a child within an education system that viewed him as outside of ‘normal’ This podcast highlights the many different ways we are all normal and the importance of empathy and understanding between us all in the many interactions we experience throughout our lives. KEY TAKEAWAYS It's important that staff in retail situations understand that aggressive outbursts from customers are not personal. An outburst is usually a sign of a problem and its vital that staff are able to recognise this. Training staff to deal with difficult situations and having a buddy system are successful strategies in the retail environment. Retail shops selling baby products can experience women who are suffering from post-natal depression and feeling over whelmed with a new baby. Emotions and feelings are heightened and magnified by post-natal depression it’s an important emotional distress issue for many women. It’s important to de-stigmatise things and being in a retail environment where the staff are trained can be hugely supportive. There is a strong argument for building people up both mentally and emotionally to be able to successfully stand up to the pressure of the typical working day. With a small amount of training, it is possible to make individuals much stronger and resilient. There are many people who have skills but struggle with some of the formal aspects of education. Normal doesn’t actually exist as we are all normal in lots of different ways. The self-esteem mindset can be quite entrenched until you understand it is not and helping an individual to understand this can be life altering. As an employer recognising what people are good at and channelling it leads to a more settled and successful work force. BEST MOMENTS ‘It was only when I left school that I started to learn’ ‘When you realise that someone is on the edge of tipping over you have to do something’ ‘People who have come back years later and apologised for their aggressive outbursts’ ‘It affects all the staff when one person is upset, it affects everyone for the whole day’ ‘We started to train our staff to recognise if they were in the firing line it wasn’t personal’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Mental Health Revolution Podcast The Answer is Yes - Now What is the Question? book by Neville Wright Kate Ashley-Norman is creator of Positive Mind Management, the host of The Mental Health Revolution podcast, and a passionate speaker and trainer about our emotional wellbeing. ‘I had a burning desire to get the message out there’ John Clarke talks to Kate about his journey through alcohol, drugs, prison and OCD to successful business owner and mentor. In this candid interview, John shares his experiences and reflects on the many experiences that he has successfully used as drivers for both personal and professional growth. Writing his Book ‘If I Can, You Can, helped him to understand the mental health challenges that he had overcome and provided an opportunity for him to get his message out there. KEY TAKEAWAYS Following 9 years of therapy writing a book was the best therapy of all it was an opportunity to connect all the parts of my journey, get the message out there and help people who are going down the wrong path in life. I've managed to come through it and out of it by running and owning several different businesses. The mental issues I had were intrusive thoughts and a lot of them were about violence. I now understand that I was suffering from Harm OCD. More people than we realise have violent thoughts, it is how we react to those thoughts that are key to understanding our mental health. Most mental health issues are learning issues, not medical issues or a chemical imbalance. it’s a learning issue and learning about it and learning how to manage it are the keys to being able to move onwards. Self-development through reading books or listening to podcasts is really beneficial the content is out there you just have to learn. A lot of what happened in my past dictates what I’m doing now. I have experienced limiting beliefs, Self-doubt, not thinking I’m good enough and believing I could not be successful previously. I want to prove that I am good enough and this motivates me. I wouldn’t change anything about my past because now I’m in a good place and it's only the beginning of what I know I can achieve. When I mentor other tradesmen, I work on the person first, it's gradual but checking in with them regularly makes them accountable and this drives both them and their business forward. I want to spend my time helping others to achieve what I’ve achieved and working with youngsters who want to start a business. BEST MOMENTS ‘When you are talking in the same language as the people you are talking to it is very powerful’ ‘A lot of it is self-development and self-taught’ ‘It’s about bringing the thought into perspective and not dwelling on it ‘ ‘Talking to someone else helps but it just takes time’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Mental Health Revolution Podcast If I Can You Can book by John Clarke ABOUT THE HOST You can support The Mental Health Revolution, and contribute to the conversation in the following closed Facebook group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/238516643507943/ You can search Kate Ashley-Norman on any of these platforms – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. Paul Lowe, the host and creator of the Speaking From Our Hearts podcast, is a firm believer in his three pillars of success in life: purpose, prosperity and philanthropy. Purpose gives us a reason to get out of bed in the morning, and through achieving prosperity, we can truly learn to enjoy our lives. But it is in philanthropy that we can achieve our greatest sense of self-worth. By showing others how to achieve success, we leave the world around us a better place than when we found it. Paul talks about his difficult beginnings, the ways he employed to cope, and the unique methods he developed in order to turn his life around. KEY TAKEAWAYS First and foremost, Paul is not distracted by theory. He finds that pragmatism is the best approach to success. He is often asked for help in “fixing” people, and always does his best to offer the best advice for the here-and-now, not wholly philosophies that often seem to confuse. Paul describes his mental health as having moved in “black and white” phases. When he was in one of his “white” phases, he felt able to do well at work, to climb ladders and make the best of himself. But when he was in a “black” phase, he felt indulged to engage in self-sabotaging behaviour, which cost him relationships and careers. Through personal loss, Paul has come to understand the power of belief. This has led to a greater understanding of pain, a highly developed sense of listening, and a heightened sensitivity to the needs of others. Paul also sees the value in sometimes being defeated. He works best when he is under pressure, or as he likes to put it, he needs to go one nil down before he can emerge victorious. By making changes to our belief systems over a gradual time, we can make the world of difference to our emotional health. It takes hard work and persistence, but can be done. The mental health treatment system seems to be becoming over complicated. Nurturing youth is invaluable The next generation will be inheriting the planet, so we should do so carefully, and with attention. Instilling decency and moral values into youth is a mission we should all undertake with care. BEST MOMENTS ‘Purpose is the first of our steps’ ‘Purpose, prosperity and philanthropy are the three pillars of success’ ‘I believe that as residents of this beautiful universe, we pay rent’ ‘Labels are for jars, not people’ ‘Rules are there to be broken’ ‘I will never flee again. I will fight’ ‘The beliefs we have as people are not given enough airtime in terms of education’ ‘I might go one nil down, but I will win’ ‘It is our beliefs that drive our thoughts and thinking’ ‘Life is a simple game and we are simple players’ ‘I believe this world is broken, and that it is crying out for something different’ ‘We need to build our world around love’ ‘Vulnerability is strength’ VALUABLE RESOURCES The Mental Health Revolution Podcast paul@paul-lowe.org http://www.paullowehearts.com/ https://twitter.com/PaulLoweHEARTS https://www.instagram.com/paullowehearts/ https://www.facebook.com/PaulLoweHEARTS/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCqmznF8VCcZKEdSfE7VlwUA Paul’s Contact Tel No: +44 (0) 7958 042 155 ABOUT THE GUEST Paul Lowe is the founder of PaulLoweHEARTS and host of the ‘Speaking From Our Hearts’ podcast. In just a mere decade, the number of prescriptions for antidepressants in England almost doubled; From 36 million in 2008 to 70.9 million in 2018. It’s mind-boggling. So, why are the numbers increasing? In this episode of the Mental Health Revolution Podcast, Kate lays out the various reasons why this have gone up significantly and why you should be alarmed by this statistic. Discover how the Brexit, recession, and even the mental awareness movements have parts to play in this. Kate is convinced that we are still far from everyone (including the health sector) having a REAL conversation about mental health. Listen in to know more. KEY TAKEAWAYS According to NHS Digital, in 2018, 70.9 million prescriptions for antidepressants were given out. It has increased significantly from the 2017’s record of 67.5 million. And to put more perspective into this horror, 10 years before that, in 2008, the number was just 36 million. #1 Reason: More people take antidepressants for a more extended period. If people use antidepressants for more than 6 months, it becomes a habit – a habit that can worsen your depression. People believe that once they stop, there will be a withdrawal phase that will cause much more distress than the actual depression. This isn’t true. #2 Reason: Brexit. Brexit causes an unstable and unpredictable environment, whether it be economical or social. When we think of our future given this circumstance, it creates anxiety. #3 Reason: Increased awareness of mental health. There has been a massive movement for the past years about removing the stigma around mental health. This has brought a remarkable level of awareness to most people and also encouraged people to take good care of their mental health. But most who choose to seek for professional help is only given a few minutes to less an hour to be given a diagnosis. And, instead of that clinicians advise them to undergo a series of examinations so they could give them a good recommendation for therapy or a diet or a counsel, they opt for giving patients medications first-hand. BEST MOMENTS “It’s not that more people are taking them... Don’t forget that these are prescriptions, not the actual number of people taking them.” “Whether you are for or against antidepressants., I think antidepressants shouldn’t be the way of life.” “We all want people to do something and make a positive action about looking after their mental wellness.” “You cannot cure depression just by giving a pill.” “In my opinion, all that this 70.9 million figure illustrates to me is that we’re still a million miles away from where we need to be in changing the conversation around mental and emotional health.” VALUABLE RESOURCES NHS NHS Digital ABOUT THE HOST Kate Ashley-Norman is creator of Positive Mind Management, the host of The Mental Health Revolution podcast, and a passionate speaker and trainer about our emotional wellbeing. It’s now time to change the stigma associated with rape or any kind of sexual assault to women. KEY TAKEAWAYS Lyn had a difficult time growing up, especially when her parents’ marriage was already on the rocks. She was caught in the middle of the feud every time and she always felt alone. She was also raped and sexually assaulted when she was a teenager. These have dealt so much emotional pain to Lyn and has worsened her mental health. She didn’t know what to do or who she could turn in to. She became suicidal. When the time finally came that her parents separated, she again experienced being sexually assaulted, this time by her father. It took her a long time to process everything and to heal from them. Her children became the catalysts towards having a positive mindset in the present and for the future. She also became protective and nurturing with her relationships, especially with her family. She decided that she wanted to seek help from a counsellor from the Rape Crisis, but it turns out, the organisation has a waiting list of 12-16 months. When she was finally offered with an appointment, she felt that she did not need to do it anymore and told them to give it to someone else. The time finally felt right to open up to her family about her traumatic sexual events in the past, so she did. She was always hiding her true feminine side since the traumatic events, and always had a problem expressing herself. But now, she learned how to embrace her natural feminine self and how to be comfortable with it now. She now uses her position to empower women, to teach them about self-love, and to grow healthy relationships. One of her greater missions is to build safe havens for women who have experienced domestic violence, self-harm, and suicide. BEST MOMENTS “It was the horror of being old enough that it wasn’t right.” “I just suppressed it and suppressed it and suppressed it, and live with it not realising how it impacted my relationships & how it impacted my behaviours.” “The big turning point for me was going on my healing journey did not happen until she was going through puberty. Never let your mental health conditions be a hinder (because they never are) in creating and growing your business! In this episode of the Mental Health Revolution Podcast, Kate interviews Ant Knight, the co-founder of the Mindset Movement. After battling with depression, anxiety, and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), Ant was able to get back up and start fulfilling his real mission – to build a community that can help other people succeed. Kate and Ant talk about great strategies that you can do so you don’t let the negative thoughts, the doubts, and your fears affect you. Learn how you could get a healthy and positive mindset in striving towards success when you tune in. KEY TAKEAWAYS Ant Knight started the Mindset Movement to help other people by sharing his stories and experience. He wants to create a group of like-minded people who could guide each other alongside while they’re building their dreams. He has worked for a long time in the corporate setting but decided one day that it’s time for a change. He started to educate himself about property and aimed to be financially independent. Ant has obsessive-compulsive disorder, or also known as OCD. He recalls that things take too long to finish because of obsessions and compulsions. For example, driving to work, taking a shower, or cleaning a room would take very long. He was diagnosed with depression, anxiety, and OCD. He was advised to go through counselling and take medication. He also underwent cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT). Self-awareness is the key to suppress all the negative thoughts you’re having. We’re all humans, we’re imperfect, and we make mistakes. Most have experience with broken relationships. Some are fixable while some aren’t and this might severely affect your behaviour and mood. Don’t get it all inside your head; try to speak with somebody else. Change for the better and take control. Do small tasks every day. Get a hobby that will let you clear your mind. And, when you also increase your physical health, the level of your mental health also increases. Ant is passionate about growing his business to reach and help more people. He continues to talk about his condition and his stories. BEST MOMENTS “What you need to be doing with your mental health is to build up good everyday working practices in terms of how you think about things and react to things – that will help you maintain good levels of mental health.” – Kate “Unfortunately, when we go through our bad patches or when we’re not looking after ourselves, everything gets a bit distorted. It’s when things get distorted that things go a bit wrong.” “You just got to get yourself out of bed and get busy.” “It’s really inspiring to get your purpose back, to get your dream back, and have a plan to go forward.” “By gently unpicking the belief that they’re depressed because of a chemical imbalance and actually pressing on the idea that they’re feeling this way because they’re powerless… that triggers a whole lot of thinking styles.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Mindset Movement Day Tickets, Sat 27 Apr 2019 at 10:00 | Eventbrite The Mindset Movement NHS ABOUT THE GUEST Ant Knight is the Co-Founder of the Mindset Movement which helps people have a shift in mindset to increase their chances of success. In this fascinating episode, Kate is in discussion with Professor Rory O’Connor about his work on suicide prevention. There are lots of urban myths around suicide, and some have persisted over a number of years. What is concerning is that some of the myths from the 1990s still persist today. For example, it’s a myth that people who talk about wanting to kill themselves are not at risk and won’t do it. This is simply not true, research indicates that 40-50% of people who commit suicide have talked about their suicidal thoughts before they killed themselves. If someone is talking about suicide always take them seriously and try to engage with them to make sure they get the help they require. KEY TAKEAWAYS In the field of suicide prevention, we are trying to alleviate the stress that leads someone to become suicidal. We are crucially trying to stop them making the transition from thinking about suicide to attempting suicide. There are many motives as to why people attempt suicide and self-harm. It is helpful to think about people as individuals who are suffering pain that has led them to this point. They see that suicide as the only option and solution to end their pain and it's important that we keep them safe in that context as those feelings will subside. Suicide is ultimately a psychological phenomenon but there are biological risk factors. The IMV model argues that when someone becomes suicidal they become overwhelmed by a sense of unbearable mental pain and entrapment that they can’t escape. The sense of entrapment is driven by a range of factors, if people feel defeated and humiliated and if they can’t escape those feelings then a sense of entrapment ensures. There are a whole range of factors that can contribute to the sense of entrapment such as early life trauma, experienced by some people. The majority of people who experience trauma early in their lives do not go on to have suicidal thoughts, but it makes them more vulnerable. People who die by suicide experience a disproportionate number of negative life events. Research has shown that the stress system is dysregulated in those who attempt suicide. The combination of a dysregulated stress system and the sense of entrapment creates the perfect storm. The stress system breaks down and this is when the risk becomes problematic because the body is not able to move to fight or flight. The IMV model identifies 8 pillars of behaviours, 8 factors that make it more likely that if you think about suicide you'll make the transition from thinking about it, to attempting suicide. Crucially If you can test the different components of the model then that becomes the basis for the development of interventions to help the most vulnerable. BEST MOMENTS ‘Really important we are not complacent and are vigilant’ ‘The person is in such mental pain that they see suicide as the only way out’ ‘Taking the idea from out of their head and talking about it is a huge sense of relief’ ‘Let’s start the conversation and see what we can do about it’ ‘Really important we are not complacent and are vigilant’ ‘We are all closed information systems, we have a limited capacity to process information and if are we continually fire- fighting our bodies just want to rest’ ‘The person is in such mental pain that they see suicide as the only way out’ VALUABLE RESOURCES Mental Health Revolution Podcast You can read about Professor Rory O’Connor and his work on suicide on his website - http://www.suicideresearch.info/ Selfie by Will Storr book ABOUT THE HOST You can support The Mental Health Revolution, and contribute to the conversation in the following closed Facebook group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/238516643507943/ You can search Kate Ashley-Norman on any of these platforms – Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and LinkedIn. What happens beyond the gates of psychiatric hospitals? In this latest episode of the Mental Health Revolution Podcast, Kate interviews a psychiatric hospital worker, who requested to stay anonymous. Mental institutions are meant to be there to help service users recover from their mental distress. The reality is far from this. Bullying, discrimination, lack of basic care.... little thought and attention is actually given to the real reasons why people end up in these places. Listen today from our guest’s first-hand experiences inside the psychiatric wards to know more. KEY TAKEAWAYS He is a clinical psychologist in a psychiatric hospital and works in the 3 adult inpatient wards. He covers assessment groups, psychological interventions, care planning, reflective practice sessions, meetings, etc. He witnessed racial discrimination. He noticed that acuphase, a rapid tranquilization, is injected more to black patients when clinicians witness a challenging behaviour. It has become a band-aid solution for the staff instead of acknowledging the reason behind the sudden change in behaviour. Staff also uses merciless physical restraints. The guest said that most of the times, patients, even females, get a lot of cuts and bruises. They hide this from the patients’ family and the public. It depends on the psychiatrist if a patient is already cleared to be discharged. It’s hard for the guest to understand their standards. It could take days, months, or years. According to him, his co-staff are aware and are just turning a blind eye on the maltreatment of the patients. He recognizes that of course, the primary nature of the staff is to care and improve their mental health. But due to fatigue of working long hours, most are unaware that they cross their boundaries. Most of us think that the sudden change of behaviour of patients – aggravation, restlessness, etc – are effects of their mental illness. But the truth is those are the side effects of their medication. BEST MOMENTS “When they’re drug-induced, you should give them time to let the drugs leave their system and see if they recover especially at such a young age.” “That sort of initial coming in when someone was unwell or presenting in perhaps a bizarre way… I don’t think there’s an issue around that. Obviously, the way people are detained and some of the stories that we heard of how they were brought in the hospital were quite upsetting for the people involved.” “…I don’t like this. I’ve always enjoyed the more severe and enduring end… people with the most complexity because I feel that we don’t understand them well enough. And if we can help them, people can move on with their lives.” ABOUT THE HOST Kate Ashley-Norman is creator of Positive Mind Management, the host of The Mental Health Revolution podcast, and a passionate speaker and trainer about our emotional wellbeing. ‘If you don’t have a therapist there is something wrong with you’ In this episode, Kate is speaking with Jason Wasser from Miami. Jason explains why everyone should have a therapist and how it can help you achieve the lifestyle you want and meet the goals you have set. Jason explains how working with a therapist and treating the mind, body and spirit is key to achieving the positive connections that enable you to be proactive across all elements of your life. KEY TAKEAWAYS Background Jason Wasser’s accreditations include licenced marriage and family therapist and certified neuro-emotional technique practitioner, he has worked across sports, TV, business and the corporate world. I believe everyone in the world should have a therapist and coach to help them minimise their life stress and maximise their potential. As a systematically trained therapist, there is always going to be the relationship you have with the world and this is based on your beliefs. I see everything as a relational dynamic, about what that person wants to have in that dynamic and how I can help them get there. Do you feel that from when you started things have changed in the world of therapy and coaching? There is currently a duality, some people are moving and growing, and some people are just stuck. People get stuck in that old school mentality of one size fits all, but this is not applicable today. Therapy for the individual using a varied approach and methodology is vital. There no such thing as the absolute truth, just the truth you are co-creating with shared realities around you. Are the results you get different? Radically as the results are seen much quicker. My job is to reconnect all those elements that are a disconnect in your mind and body so that you can be proactive instead of going into a fight or flight state of response. There are not many therapists that are changing the nervous system response as part of their methodology currently. What brought you along this path? Once I got into the modalities and started practising more integrative medicine and functional nutrition I started to realise your whole nervous system needs to be treated as part of the therapy process. The neuro-emotional technique addresses all these needs. The neuro-emotional technique how does it work? Your brain and eyes are processing constantly processing thousands of images, and our rational brain sorts this information into rational categories. Your logical brain is not able to process any emotional triggers or memories, and this can result in a response such as your reptilian brain moving you to a fight or flight state if an image triggers an emotional connection or memory. The neuro-emotional technique combines a number of techniques and principles from traditional Chinese medicine, chiropractic and applied kinesiology. It is a holistic approach to well-being focusing on imbalances in the structure of the skeletomuscular system, unresolved ‘negative emotional blocks’, toxins in the body and deficiencies in nutrition. The body holds on to emotions that it has experienced from the beginning of life to the present time. The subconscious mind remembers all of these experiences, including negative and traumatic ones. These emotions can be triggered and translate to pain on a physical level. The physiological status of the body, through the process of remembering, is emotionally replicating a similar physiological state to that experienced in the original event. What are the toxins that someone is carrying around? Any good therapist will be looking for the underlying causes that have triggered an illness and sometimes exposure to toxins can be the cause for a range of disorders. The right nutritional intake along with the removal of sources and exposure to toxins can radically alter a person’s level of wellness. What’s the one thing that you do that changes people’s perception? The crucial point is when they make the link about their emotional health being something more than just chemicals in their brain. I believe everything is mind body and spirit and along with that belief, I know we carry around an intersection of things we’ve been carrying around since we were born alongside intergeneration themes. I ask my clients to think differently and consider what if this is not biochemically theirs but something their family has had over generations, an ‘emotional muscle memory pattern’ and they can be the person who can take control of it. BEST MOMENTS ‘It doesn’t really matter what your environment is whether you're corporate or performance related I believe everyone should have a therapist to help them get out of their own way’ ‘The people I hang out with are way out of the box’ ‘I can be a therapist and an entrepreneur and help other people’ ‘I see so many money-related therapy blockages’ ‘Entrepreneurship is a radically wild modality’ ‘You don’ t know what you don’t know’ ‘People may look healthy on the outside, but they are not healthy on the inside’ ‘Without a functional assessment and working with a practitioner you’re not going to be able to get the core of things’ ‘If you don’t have a therapist there is something wrong with you’ ‘Therapy is an emotional modality’ ‘We train people how to think differently’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-mental-health-revolution-podcast/id1440021168?mt=2 https://www.amazon.co.uk/Importance-Suffering-Meaning-Emotional-Discontent/dp/0415667801 https://thefamilyroomsfl.com/ https://www.instagram.com/jasonwasserlmft/?hl=en ABOUT THE HOST Kate Ashley-Norman is creator of Positive Mind Management, the host of The Mental Health Revolution podcast, and a passionate speaker and trainer about our emotional wellbeing. In this episode, Kate explains how growing your own self-awareness will help and positively change the relationships you have with others. This insightful podcast provides clear and concise advice about the changes you can make that will help any relationship, tune in to find out what steps you can take now. KEY TAKEAWAYS Growing a sense of self-emotional awareness and high emotional intelligence will help your relationships with other people. Knowing yourself will make a huge difference to the way you react to other people and how they react to you. Self-esteem Having high internal self-esteem is something we all aspire to. We can be prevented from moving forward by the fear about how others perceive us. If you accept that others are going to judge you then you are no longer in conflict with them. The only judge of you will be yourself. If you are not happy with something then you can change it, it's within your control. It’s a big change that you can make to bring your relationships to the next level. Taking responsibility Areas of conflict can be very difficult, and nobody wants to take any responsibility. To stop the cycle the best thing you can do is to take a degree of responsibility even if it’s not your fault. Become a problem solver and solution seeker. This provides you with more control and power over the conflict and the ability to move it on in a positive way instead of endlessly going around and around. Language skills The words we use and the tone in which they are spoken has a huge impact on others. Most people can be categorised into 2 different groups for language - Radiators and Drains, Radiators use positive empowering language, Drains use disempowering language. Use your language to lift people up rather than letting their language drag you down. Recognise thinking styles Some people will talk about everything being a catastrophe, but this is not the reality it is the way they think about things. They have to make everything much, much bigger than it is. You can help to get everything back into proportion when you are communicating with them by providing perspective. BEST MOMENTS ‘People are always going to judge others’ ‘Trying to change it is just a waste of energy’ ‘It changes how others interact with you’ ‘You want to drive it to a solution by taking some sort of responsibility’ ‘Try and lift the drains using empowering language’ ‘Just bring them back down and work with them in a much clearer way’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-mental-health-revolution-podcast/id1440021168?mt=2 ABOUT THE HOST Kate Ashley-Norman is creator of Positive Mind Management, the host of The Mental Health Revolution podcast, and a passionate speaker and trainer about our emotional wellbeing. In this episode, Kate interviews Clinical Psychologist and author of Tales from the Madhouse, Gary Sidley. They discuss the alternatives to biomedical psychiatry as ways of responding to human suffering. This fascinating podcast shares the experience and journey that Gary has undertaken and explores the reasons why urgent change is required. KEY TAKEAWAYS The Concept of the Book I worked for many years in mental health services in the UK but became increasingly disillusioned over the years. I began as a psychiatric nurse in the early years then qualified as a clinical psychologist. During this period, I sought to change things from the inside but from 2000 onwards I came to realise I couldn’t change it from inside. After that passage through the system, I came to the conclusion that we did need a revolution Writing the book was both cathartic, expressing my frustration at the system and how it works and aimed at making some contribution to the movement for change. Why is it an Uphill Struggle to get Changes to the System? There are a number of powerful vested interests that are resisting change and want the system to remain the same. It’s convenient for Politian’s as they don’t have to address the underlying causes when its viewed as an internal defect. It’s the biological psychiatric paradigm I am at odds with. It’s a huge challenge and those with vested interests have become very skilled at opposition and neutralisation. Have you seen many Changes Over the Years? From 1980 onwards we saw the move away from large institutions to more community care and a better understanding that people can live more fulfilling lives has developed. There have been no changes in the ideology at the top and the default point is always the biomedical. The reality of the practice is very different from the mission statements because it’s based on the culture of an internal health deficit. Prevention If you teach a child to be resilient and to have an understanding of their emotions then they will be able to continue to thrive all the way through their lives Sadly, when finances are stretched it is the preventative measures and activities that cease. It would make better sense to look at the contributors towards human distress rather than waiting for people to break down. The Mental Health Act It’s astonishing that as a developed nation we have an Act that is so discriminatory. It acts in a negative way reinforcing all the biomedical assumptions about mental distress with an implicit assumption that anyone with mental health issues has an internal deficit that means they can’t make their own decisions The language of the act also perpetuates the idea that it is an internal deficit that should be treated with biomedical resources Ultimately it will come down to money and it is only at this point that Politian’s will take an interest in change. BEST MOMENTS ‘There are so many different voices screaming for change’ ‘The cry for something different is increasing all the time’ ‘The nuts and bolts of the provision is medication’ ‘How many people has that research actually helped? ‘People are now encouraged to talk more about mental health, but the system remains the same’ VALUABLE RESOURCES https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-mental-health-revolution-podcast/id1440021168?mt=2 www.talesfromthemadhouse.com ABOUT THE HOST Kate Ashley-Norman is creator of Positive Mind Management, the host of The Mental Health Revolution podcast, and a passionate speaker and trainer about our emotional wellbeing. When was the last time you spent a whole night tossing and turning on your bed, because you were having a hard time getting to sleep? Was it just days ago? Was it just last night? In this episode of the Mental Health Revolution Podcast, Kate debunks all the claims of the insomnia remedies out there. Kate urges you to train yourself into getting a healthier habit of getting to sleep. It’s time to ditch the herbal supplements, that classical music, or the essential oils. You only need your mind. Now, if you’re curious where to begin, then make sure to tune in! A night of good deep sleep is easy to get and quite fuzz-free from then on. KEY TAKEAWAYS Insomnia is something most of us suffer at least once in our lives. There’s a myriad of remedies and strategies you can do to overcome insomnia if you google right now. They’d tell you to take herbal supplements (e.g. valerian and chamomile), keep away from the distractions (e.g. phone, tablet, and books), or avoid drinking alcohol. Kate says these preparations you do each time you go to sleep are just reminders that you cannot sleep. So, it makes you anxious and therefore hindering you more to sleep immediately. Emile Coue was a pharmacist based in France who has observed from his experience of giving medicine to the patients that when they’re told that the medicines work, the recovery rate is higher and faster. This discovery of his is called and known to many as thr placebo effect. Stop worrying about getting to sleep. Instead, think about the morning after – think about how good it will be the after you wake up. BEST MOMENTS “Alcohol is a big reason why I have a disrupted sleep sometimes. If I have too much wine the night before, then I wake up at around 2 or 3 in the morning because of that sugar rush.” “Don’t imagine trying to get to sleep; imagine instead waking up in the morning after a really really good, long and refreshing sleep.” “Once you got into that frame of mind… imagining what you want it to be rather than fearing what you don’t want it to be, that’s a very very powerful mindset to get into.” VALUABLE RESOURCES Mental Health Revolution #007: 10 Tips For Staying Sane In An Insane World ABOUT THE HOST Kate Ashley-Norman is creator of Positive Mind Management, the host of The Mental Health Revolution podcast, and a passionate speaker and trainer about our emotional wellbeing. Grief is something that we will all experience in our lives. In a moving, and personal episode Kate talks through her own experiences of grief. Grieving after the death of a loved one will happen to all of us at some point. Kate explains how this is a unique experience to each of us and should be seen as normal, not medicated like depression. Kate talks through the five stages of grief, with some suggestions on how best we can best process grief in our lives. Kate offers an open call for anyone who has recently lost a loved one to get in touch and have a chat. KEY TAKEAWAYS Just because you are getting on with your life doesn’t mean you have forgotten your loved ones. It’s important to remember that the grief will become part of who you are. It’s ok to get upset, it’s part of the healing process. Psychologists have researched; five stages of grieving. Denial, Anger, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. Sometimes you need this framework when you have that emotional barrage, it can help you process it. These are not boxes to contain you however the process is you. Death of my grandmother was a joyful occasion. There was lots of laughter, and drinking in her memory because it was expected over a long time. She was nearly 102, which was very different to the deep-seated grief, and sadness of losing my father suddenly. Grief is individual to each passing, and each relationship, don’t feel like you need to feel a certain way. It’s difficult to box grief into a package, with general rules on how to process it. Bereavement had been excluded from the major depression symptoms in the DSM manual. This meant that doctors were able to treat someone for depression following grief. This was worrying me because grief is a perfectly understandable emotion when you lose somebody. It’s not something you can medicate away. It turns you upside down, and inside out. You have to find a new framework without the person who has passed away. You can be in a state of confusion, and discombobulation because you’ve lost someone important to you until your able to absorb this into your life. Keeping it in perspective. Two days after a loved one’s death, it’s perfectly fine to spend the day crying. You do not need to medicate your way through it. You need to feel it in the depths of your stomach, in your toes in your fingertips. This is an important step in processes these emotions. Do not feel that you are doing anything wrong by continuing to feel emotional about it. That is normal. If you are struggling come and have a chat. I think about my father and still get upset nine years later, which is ok because I can then still carry on with my day. Embrace the emotion, love it for a bit, polish it, use it for what is needed and make it a part of you. BEST MOMENTS ‘Grief is a very normal process.’ ‘It’s a perfectly normal emotional reaction to get upset about the death of a loved one.’ ‘It’s not something you can medicate away.’ ‘You’ve got a life, a future to live.’ ‘Everybody feels grief in different ways.’ ‘You have to go through that process of suffering so that you can absorb that into your life.’ ‘You can’t deny that someone has passed away.’ ‘Sometimes we need to hang onto those emotions.’ ‘You don’t have to get over it in 2 weeks, 2 months or 6 months.’ ‘Embrace the emotion of it.’ ABOUT THE HOST Kate Ashley-Norman is creator of Positive Mind Management, the host of The Mental Health Revolution podcast, and a passionate speaker and trainer about our emotional wellbeing. Welcome to The Mental Health Revolution Podcast. In this episode, Kate continues her interview with English drummer, co-founder of King Crimson, Michael Rex Giles. KEY TAKEAWAYS Journalists and media people might be sportsman or musician who failed and decided to go into journalism so that they can continue their interest in this subject the same time then when they're interviewing the well-known people because they got themselves in a position to do it, then they're getting the glory of that person reflected back onto them. The process goes on then the glory that the journalist is receiving because I know this person, I've spoken to them, I've spent time with, that gets further reflected back onto the general public who are watching the broadcast or whatever, they know that journalist spend time with that person, and now they’d like to have done that. That’s how everything feeds on itself. It all starts with either the person who's done something, wanting the publicity, so going to the best journalists; they can find who they might be able to trust to do an interview. Mental health does not have to be a negative thing and by not conforming to the norms of what society expects you to be in terms of how your happiness or the way that you react or you behave can actually be perfectly normal to you as a person. Being normal is when you do something that you enjoy doing rather than doing something that does not make you happy just because society wants you to do something in a certain kind of way. The main thing is actually an attempt to find out who you are, what you are, what makes you, what makes you tick, and it can take some time. Why are the numbers for prescriptions for antidepressants doubling? There are so many millions of people suffering from stress and anxiety due to the systems under which people are living and working. There's been so much pressure from that that’s a little bit been squeezed up at the top. And so it's now getting a bit more publicity than it would have done 20 years. How to maintain your mental health. One thing is a physical exercise which is a meditation in itself. Perception comes from cultural influences; anybody who is free of contract, if there is such a person, their perception of what it is would be far greater than the people who are culturally brainwashed. Genius is people who do something which really inspires people, they could be called freaks of nature because they do things out of this world. Depression is there in order for us to take a step back and be able to take some time out to reassess. Being very positive and having a realistic attitude to life you can be able to see the opportunities around you and expand on those opportunities. In order to avoid mental health issues, is to find the best information you can, some of the information may come from you and your organization, but there is so much available in books. Welcome to The Mental Health Revolution Podcast. In this episode, Kate interviews an English drummer, best known as a co-founder of King Crimson in 1969, Michael Rex Giles. Kate and Michael discuss how predictable and easy it is to understand mental health and why putting mental health into the hands of us all can give everyone a more well-rounded perception of Mental Health. Hop in to learn about this and much more. Welcome back to The Mental Health Revolution Podcast. In today’s episode, Kate interviews multi-millionaire business owner, property developer and author, Neville Wright. Kate has always been fascinated with Neville’s story from growing up with dyslexia and leaving school at 15 because of it, to starting Kiddicare, a nursery retailer which he later sold for £70 million. Kate and Neville discuss mental health and the causation and correlation behind why mental health matters and how we can help ourselves, our employees and others, learn how to deal with mental health issues. Mental health is nothing to do with being ill, it’s all about learning the skills to thrive. The reason why we have so many mental health issues is that we are tackling it in completely the wrong way. Doctors have been taught to diagnose things in one particular way, but in reality, there are others. Tune in today, to find out more. KEY TAKEAWAYS None is looking at certain medication or prescriptions that could be affecting our society and causing some of the violence that’s going on. On top of this, there’s a lot of psychological research that shows that people are suffering from withdrawal symptoms, those that have been on long-term antidepressants and as a society we don’t understand the long-term effects of these drugs. Is it money that’s driving these drug companies or is it they want to care for others? Most people will know the answer to this, however, to really impact the medical mental health issue it will take huge governmental and society changes. How do you approach the way that you deal with the people that work for you? When you’ve got a business there are very few people that will jump in and fit the need. What you really need to do when hiring is find out what people want to do, what they’re passionate about and what they’re interested in. What Neville was able to do was find people’s passion and place them where they were best suited. Find their focused passion so that they love what they do. By making our customers experience better and by spending time with them you’ll turn them into raving fans, rather than just customers. Because when you have an experience with a company or by yourself mentally it stays with you for the rest of your life and you end up reliving that all of the time. But what you need to do is understand that and translate that into helping others. When Neville was employed in the sixties and seventies no one was around to help with his dyslexia. People and employers didn’t have the understanding of mental health that we do today. So, as a result, when people came along to Neville’s business he protected them and build a system for them to thrive. Because he had been there himself. By numbing the pain and not dealing with it your making it 100 times worse. You have to go through the pain, get through the other side and change as a person. It's only by having flaws and failings that enable us to grow and develop. To stay stress-free and have a healthy mind you need to have a purpose and a direction. You need to get out of bed every morning aiming to achieve something and working towards your goals. BEST MOMENTS “There always seemed to be a lot of love around. For the staff, the family and the business.” “Have you got a mental problem? Or is that everyone has that ‘problem’ when they get that far, in business and in life.” “Most mental health diagnostics are based on the medical models and not the reality” “It seems paradoxical to me that you’re giving someone who is depressed suicidal thoughts.” “Over the last five years, health and safety has been drastically improved on construction sites. But over the last five years the suicide rate of construction workers stands at about 290 a year.” “When you leave a job you should always take more knowledge with you when you go than when you came.” “Don’t try to make right what’s wrong. Concentrate on what you can do and be great” “The perception of mental stress and mental struggle has changed considerably from generation to generation” VALUABLE RESOURCES The Answer Is Yes: Now What Is the Question? https://www.amazon.co.uk/Neville-Wright/e/B0034P9BRQ ABOUT THE HOST Kate Ashley-Norman is creator of Positive Mind Management, the host of The Mental Health Revolution podcast, and a passionate speaker and trainer about our emotional wellbeing. Is your company keeping its employees’ mental health in check? Well, they should be. In today’s episode of the Mental Health Revolution Podcast, Kate talks to Geoff McDonald, the co-founder of Minds@Work, about the importance of awareness and open discussions on mental health in a corporate setting. Some people are afraid to disclose their mental distress to HR. Companies should be more concerned and outspoken about mental health in the workplace. Geoff also emphasizes that mentally healthy workplaces tend to perform better and more efficient. KEY TAKEAWAYS Geoff was diagnosed with anxiety depression. Knowing that he's loved by so many people is what saves him during dark moments. It's time to create images of mental health out there that's positive - not seeing it as a taboo topic. This could convince people to have a check and take care of their mental health also. Mental health should be also taught inside classrooms. Kids should be educated early on about how to take care also of their mental health. We shouldn't wait for a crisis to come first before informing them about it. Why the well-being programs don't work? 1- There's no organization accountability to people being healthy. 2- There's no individual accountability. In the construction industry alone, there have been 283 suicides per year during the 5 years. Though the construction industry is giving out health and safety insurances, especially on-site, there's nothing allotted to retraining mental health. Some companies require reconstruction. The should look at well-being as a strategic enabler to drive performance of the business. Better communication between executives and employees will also help to grow the business. Importance of recovery daily. Geoff sees to it that he finds a few minutes in a day to recover. BEST MOMENTS "Let's create a new positive narrative around mental health so that people will want to engage." When there are challenges, clinging too much on positivity, hope, and optimism can be a bad thing. It’s more advisable to cling onto the reality of things instead. In this episode of the Mental Health Revolution Podcast, Kate advises you to embrace suffering and take a realistic appraisal of what’s happening all the time. Understanding your current situation can clear your mind and get you thinking of how you’ll tackle it head-on. Remember, positivity can give relief anytime any day but that’s all it can give – a sense of relief and not a clear solution. KEY TAKEAWAYS Kate does not preach about positivity but rather teaches the clarity of mind. This is for you to have a realistic appraisal of their situation. Look and understand your reality. This will help you cope with the tough times. It doesn't matter if you're suffering from mental illness, there are skills you can acquire that will help you in making decisions and facing challenges. James Davis discusses in his book The Importance of Suffering the difference of productive and unproductive suffering. "Productive suffering is an emotional experience through which we can actively pass from a worse place to a better place. Unproductive suffering is the state of being gripped by feelings or habits that corrode the integrity and quality of life." When you're feeling a bit low, take a timeout. We need to allow time to process things and regain our energy. Don't embrace positivity, hope, and optimism to the point of denial. BEST MOMENTS "Positivity sits with hope and optimism. Hope and optimism, as well, could also result in serious disempowerment in yourself." "You need the confidence so that you cope with whatever life throws at you." What are spreading everywhere, especially online, are just scratches on the surface of what the real deal is with mental health. In this episode of The Mental Health Revolution Podcast, Kate chats with Dr. Lucy Johnstone, a consultant clinical psychologist, to give everyone a new perspective on mental illnesses. Discover today what has changed since 1989 in the field of psychiatry, why medications should just be an ‘add-on’ solution to mental illnesses, and what’s the edge of Power Threat Meaning Framework to existing diagnostic manuals. Dr. Lucy also answers questions on issues of downgrading mental illnesses and the cultural differences in dealing with mental distress. Learn also why healthy physical health can better your mental health. KEY TAKEAWAYS Positive changes since 1989 It has become much more mainstream to criticize the medical model of mental distress 'Survivor movement' has grown strongly in numbers Powerful criticisms are coming from within the field of psychiatry. DSM 5 came out in 2013. WHO also release a similar diagnostic manual called ICD. The problem with these diagnostic manuals is not actually recognizing the role cultural differences play. Your mental health is gonna improve if your physical health is better. Lucy together with other senior psychologists spent five years developing the Power Threat Meaning Framework. People will have more of a narrative understanding rather than diagnostic understanding. What’s good about it is it includes social factors and social determinants. What directed her to the field of psychology? She had struggles understanding herself when she was young so she used a lot of time reading psychology books. It then became a long-term interest. There is no evidence for genetic vulnerability. What we have are temperamental differences. Sensitivity also is not a problem but the environment. The important thing about therapy is feeling that you're understood, listened to, and accepted. BEST MOMENTS "The very least you could do is tell the people the story and the make their own decisions." "As a psychologist, I would say what often makes a difference is what personal meaning you attach to your experiences. All the other factors are filtered through and shaped by personal meaning." Do you believe that mental health issues are caused by brain chemical imbalance? Listen to today’s episode of The Mental Health Revolution Podcast because that’s what is Kate gonna discuss and more. Kate says that mental health as a brain disease is just a marketing ploy by the pharmaceutical companies. They’re selling drugs that do not cure mental illnesses but only gives relief. Another hot take from her is that the proliferation of mental disorders is happening because of these pharmaceutical companies. Listen as she presents facts and statistics to open your eyes to these controversies. There’s a completely better solution in handling mental health issues and Kate is going to share how you could build your own solid foundation to improve yourself. KEY TAKEAWAYS Fact #1: There is no scientific evidence that mental illness is a brain disease. Fact #2: There is no evidence that depression or similar is caused by any chemical imbalance to the brain Fact #3: There is no evidence that antidepressant is rebalancing at all. The proliferation of disorders increased over centuries. Kate believes that it is driven by pharmaceutical companies. Pharma companies spend billions of dollars before putting out a drug in the market. So, they market it massively. but drugs for mental illnesses don't seem to cure them. they're just used to relieve symptoms. The advisory panel for DSM is financially tied with pharmaceutical companies. 76% of them had research funding and 40% had consulting that came from the pharmaceutical industries. Why should we care if people are finding relief from medications? "I care because it's not reality. We're not giving them a good solid foundation to build on. We're making them reliant on something which is feeding another belief system that they're ill..." Educate people about improving their mental health. Educate them about their psychological foundations so they understand belief systems, self-esteem, control, etc. Take a preventative approach to reduce mental distress. We can never get rid of it because there will be different degrees of mental distress. BEST MOMENTS "If you're somebody who is suffering from some kind of mental distress, I completely want you to understand that I want you to feel more empowered about what you're going through." "It's to build a much stronger belief system so you can take control of your thoughts, emotions and reactions." "So what we've been seeing over the last few decades is that we've been medicalising normal human distress." "When the whole world is talking about mental health, there is no better time than now to start that conversation with everybody that you know." Welcome to the first ever episode of The Mental Health Revolution! It’s time to meet your host, Kate Ashley-Norman and know more about what you should be excited for in the upcoming episodes. Discover how Kate is starting a revolution to change the way mental health is perceived nowadays through this podcast. She’s eager to start the REAL discussion on mental health and to put back the control of mental health in every individual’s hand. The problem is: everybody’s talking about it but the solutions presented in front of us (i.e. antidepressants) are not really doing anything. Kate says instead of improving mental health, it’s worsening it. It’s time to destigmatise it, demystify it, and de-medicalise it. KEY TAKEAWAYS Kate specializes in coaching about mental health. She has no formal medical background about it but she wants to be at the forefront of destigmatizing and demystifying mental health. There's a huge number of minors and teenagers who are suffering from depression or anxiety. Suicide rates are high at the moment. Suicide is a big killer of men ages 20-49. People who are suffering from mental health issues might be scared of disclosing their condition with their employers. NHS gives out free checkups and medications for people with mental health issues. But the problem with it is they're just 'tickling the surface' and prolongs the issues with people. Just like physical health, mental health can be improved by having a healthy lifestyle. Do little things day by day. You can be happy by achieving your goals little by little. There will be interesting discussions about mental health with guests in the podcast. Guests can be medical experts in the field or someone who wants to share their stories. BEST MOMENTS "I want this podcast to really question how we deal with mental health. I want it to be a commonsensical deep dive." "There's a huge outcry but nobody's understanding what it is driving these people doing what they're doing." "It's not about what happens in your life. It about how you respond to what happens in your life."
