Cape Town takes second stab at rolling out electric buses for its MyCiTi service

Engineering News Online Audio Articles

This audio is brought to you by Endress and Hauser, a leading supplier of products, solutions and services for industrial process measurement and automation. The City of Cape Town should have battery electric buses (e-buses) operational on its MyCiTi bus service by 2027, says Urban Mobility MMC Rob Quintas. It will be the city's second stab at rolling out the zero-emission technology, following an unsuccessful attempt as an early adopter in 2018. E-buses has since experienced significant progress in terms of range and technology. Quintas tells Engineering News Online that the Cape Town council gave the Urban Mobility Directorate the go-ahead to proceed with adopting alternate energy buses as part of MyCiTi Phase 2A. Phase 2A will expand the bus service to run between Mitchells Plain, Khayelitsha, Wynberg and Claremont. "At this point in time it is foreseen that the first routes will be operational by mid-2027, if all goes as planned," says Quintas. However, the service will not only use e-buses. Cape Town's Climate Change Action Plan commits the city to transition to electric or alternative-fuel-powered freight, bus, taxi and passenger vehicles by 2050, explains Quintas. In terms of this plan, the city's Urban Mobility Directorate is mandated to develop a procurement strategy for low-carbon-emission vehicles and fuel technologies in pursuit of carbon neutrality. This initiative also aligns with the national Department of Transport's Green Transport Strategy (2018 - 2050) which states that 10% of municipal bus fleets must use clean energy within the next 10 to 20 years. "As such, the directorate has initiated a procurement strategy aimed at zero-emission vehicle solutions for the city's bus fleet," notes Quintas. "The first step was to identify the most suitable alternative or green-vehicle and fuel-technology options for the MyCiTi bus service, supported by the necessary infrastructure. "The directorate conducted a feasibility study of alternative-energy vehicles, including compressed natural gas, hydrogen electric, battery electric, hybrid and Euro VI [internal combustion engine] buses. "Key recommendations from this study advocate for the adoption of a dual strategy, involving the acquisition of both [cleaner] Euro VI diesel buses and battery electric buses for the upcoming procurement cycle for the roll-out of the second phase of the MyCiTi bus service," says Quintas. Quintas emphasises that the city will continue to investigate alternative fuel options given the continuous technology changes within the zero- and low-emissions transport industry. "These need to be monitored to ensure the city procures the best available technology at the time of procurement."

The Shoprite Group has started testing a Scania heavy-duty electric truck as part of its delivery fleet. Robin Jooste, 28, from Mitchells Plain, Cape Town, has been selected to drive the vehicle. The 100% electric refrigerated truck can hold about 16 pallets. It has a fully electric cooling system, powered by the vehicle's battery packs, and aided by solar panels on the roof of the vehicle. With a range of about 350 km, the vehicle will be used for localised deliveries, and will be recharged using renewable energy generated by Shoprite's existing solar installations. The truck also features glow-in-the-dark signage, which will make it more visible when travelling at night. “As Africa's largest grocery retailer, the Shoprite Group places significant focus on reducing its environmental impact across its operations,” says group chief supply chain officer Andrew Havinga. “One of the ways we are doing this is by increasing the energy efficiency of our truck fleet. “The acquisition of this truck . . . is another major move in this direction.” Shoprite says the addition of the electric truck forms part of the group's ongoing efforts to reduce the environmental impact of its supply chain. It recently also acquired more than 100 Euro 5 low-emission trucks. More than 900 of its trailers are also fitted with solar panels, which enable the refrigeration and tailgate lift to continue running, even when the truck is switched off.

The company, South Africa's largest provider of fibre-to-the-home broadband infrastructure, has an audacious plan to deploy fibre not only to townships - a project that is already well under way - but also to informal settlements. It doesn't intend doing this via wireless for the "last mile". It wants to deploy a fixed-fibre connection into every house and into every dwelling, even if the household's total income is less than R5 000/month. It wants to drive down the price of uncapped broadband to less than R100/month, and in so doing make uncapped Internet access available to almost everybody in South Africa who wants it. Pie in the sky? No, says Dietlof Mare, CEO of Vumatel and Maziv, in this wide-ranging interview with TechCentral's TC|Daily. In this episode, Mare talks about the success of the Vuma Reach prepaid fibre roll-out in Mitchells Plain in Cape Town, and how Vuma is replicating that model across the country, including in sprawling townships like Soweto, Vosloorus and Soshanguve in Gauteng. However, this number may increase over time, depending on future demand for the service, City of Cape Town Urban Mobility MMC Rob Quintas tells Engineering News Online. “The roll-out of the service to Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha will be undertaken in phases, as infrastructure becomes available and the necessary operating contracts are put in place,” he notes. “The first buses, although not on dedicated red busways, are expected to operate by mid-2025, if all goes as planned and if there are no delays, as part of the earlier operational milestone dates servicing the Nyanga/Central Business District route and the Wynberg/Claremont to Khayelitsha/Mitchells Plain route.” The two new bus depots will be built on a 15 ha piece of land on the corner of Mew Way and Spine road, situated between Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha. The first construction work will be visible by mid-August. “The city's expenditure on the roll-out of the MyCiTi service to the south east is the biggest financial investment in public transport by any metro city to date,” says City of Cape Town mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis. “With the expansion of the MyCiTi service, we will be bringing more MyCiTi routes to Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha to connect commuters with Claremont and Wynberg. “This is a mammoth undertaking and we are doing it in phases,” says Hill-Lewis. “Residents from these areas will see new infrastructure being built in the coming 36 months, be it the widening of roads, MyCiTi stations and stops, and depots needed to operate the service. “I am proud to say that the new bus depots will be state-of-the-art facilities, designed to use our scarce and limited resources to maximum benefit,” notes Hill-Lewis. The depot buildings will be orientated and shaped in response to the sun's direction, while it will also utilise saw-tooth roofs to channel reflective light into the interior to minimise the need for artificial light. Motion sensors will be linked to all internal lighting to keep electricity use to a minimum. The orientation of the buildings will also limit the need for air conditioning, making the buildings more energy efficient. “As for water, we estimate that up to 80% of the water to be used at the bus washing facility will be recycled,” explains Hill-Lewis. “We will harvest rain water from the roofs, and install water-wise toilets with water flow control.” Sustainable urban drainage systems in the form of permeable paving have also been incorporated at the large bus staging areas to allow for the replenishment of the underground water table. Local Benefits Quintas notes that local residents and subcontractors from the surrounding communities are set to benefit from the 32-month-long depot construction projects, through temporary employment opportunities and contracts. “Temporary employment and training opportunities to the value of at least R22-million will be available to local jobseekers. “Also, the contract between the city and the construction company stipulates that local subcontractors should be contracted to supply goods and services to the value of R40.8-million. “Thus, our local communities will have the opportunity to earn an income while this construction project is ongoing, and hopefully this injection will give them a foothold in the market,” says Quintas. The bus depots are set to provide a secure site where buses can be held while not operating; office administration facilities for the bus operating companies; facilities for drivers to rest and eat between shifts; as well as the infrastructure required for maintenance, refuelling and washing.

I've been wanting to speak with Open Streets (https://openstreets.org.za/) even prior to this podcast launching in mid-2019.  Most listening to this podcast would have some idea of the Open Streets initiative but let me not assume that IS the case: Open Streets is a citizen-driven collective, working towards improving the equitable design and use of public space and streets for all users. It was founded in 2012 by a group of volunteers committed to a more equitable, integrated, safer and vibrant Cape Town. The very premise of spatial transformation and equity of enhancing spaces and linking places is entrenched in their efforts. Even during the Covid period the OS team was looking for avenues and approaches to embrace community mobilisation and the activation of streets and public spaces – frequently with the ambition of a temporary a car-free day and activities. Nyanga, Mitchells Plain, the CBD, are a handful of the initiatives OS have driven in addition to advocacy routes in Bike2Work and other non-motorized transport initiatives. Today I am delighted and privileged to discuss the work and achievements of Open Streets to date with Managing Director of the organisation, Kirsten Wilkins. An experienced Urban Designer by trade Kirsten epitomises the values and credo of the organisation. You can only be caught up in the passion she has for cycling, spatial and mobility justice and making safer spaces for people to feel they belong. As we approach World Bicycle Day on June 3rd, I wanted to finally add the Open Streets story to the TTPod archive, and I'm delighted that we've been able to get this episode recorded and story told. As always, I hope you enjoy the episode. This episode is for you Marco Gerretto… Recorded Monday 23rd May --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/talking-transformation-po/message

Dibela was murdered just days before an agreement with the City of Cape Town to bring MyCiTi back to Khayelitsha and Mitchells Plain was to be signed. The agreement has caused some friction within the taxi associations. For more insights into this here is CODETA spokesperson, Andile Kanyi.

Winde threatens intergovernmental dispute over police resources

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has painted a grim picture of policing in the province, revealing a shortage of officers and saying that it's common for the province's 150 police precincts to have "too few boots on the ground". Winde and Community Safety MEC Albert Fritz were presenting the findings of the provincial government's Policing Needs and Priorities (PNP) report in a digital briefing on Thursday. "The PNP report is an invaluable resource in understanding the constraints and needs of our police force. The 2020/21 report is no exception and highlights clear recommendations to address this, particularly as these relate to resource constraints within SAPS," Winde said. The report contained several recommendations, including the recruitment and appointment of additional officers and the training of existing officers through a revised curriculum. Improvements to vehicle fleet management and the upgrading of police stations where needed were also recommended. The provincial government has threatened to launch an intergovernmental dispute if resources constraints are not addressed. The report revealed that province had lost more than 11 000 officers over the last decade. Fritz said: "This has been a feature in the findings of PNP reports over the years. And things are deteriorating. Whereas in 2011/2012, the SAPS had 199 345 service members, by the end of March 2020, this figure stood at 187 358: a decrease of 11 987." In addition, police resources were not fairly allocated in the province, Fritz said. He said that while some suburban police stations had one officer for every 100 residents, high-density areas such as townships and the Cape Flats had vastly different statistics. In Ravensmead, there is one police officer for every 895 people and in Hout Bay, one officer for every 804 people. In the Gugulethu precinct, the ratio is 1: 642, in Atlantis it's 1: 715 and in Harare it's 1:731. The national average is one police officer for every 400 people. Winde and Fritz used the digicon to lash out at Police Minister Bheki Cele for his statements at an imbizo in Mitchells Plain over the weekend when he said that the government had "put every effort" into policing the Western Cape. Cele claimed the province received the "lion's share" of policing resources. Winde responded: "This is out of touch with reality. If the national minister will not acknowledge the very serious resourcing challenges that our province faces, and which we have communicated to him in detail, it becomes increasingly clear that he has not adequately engaged with his constitutional function in line with . the Constitution." There is an estimated shortage of more than 500 detectives in the Western Cape, and of those who are employed, almost half have a caseload of around 200 dockets. The norm is between 50 and 60 dockets. Gaps in the training of detectives is a key concern for Fritz. He said that of those detectives eligible for training, 91% had not received training in the Specialised Detective Learning Programme, 88% had not been trained to investigate fraud, and 46% had not completed the Basic Detective Learning Programme. In 2019, the province gave notice of an intergovernmental dispute over police resources. "Following clear commitments made on addressing resourcing by the national government, it was decided that the process would be suspended whilst negotiations continued. We want to make clear today that this option of pursuing an intergovernmental dispute remains firmly on the table for the Western Cape government. The latest comments by the minister do not provide us with the confidence that the national government is sticking to these commitments and, if anything, believes enough has been done already," Winde said.

In this episode Ashley speaks about how he is using running for God's glory.   Growing up in Mitchells Plain, an area on the Cape Flats infamous for gang violence and drugs, Ashley is familiar with the challenges and hardships many on the Cape Flats face. Refusing to be a product of his environment, Ashley instead focuses his energy on who he is becoming and being a role model who plants the seed of hope. Reflecting on some of the core events that shaped his perspective and gave rise to his resilience, Ashley sees going to a boarding school at 13 years old as being one of these defining moments. Though it was difficult being away from home, it was simply preparing him for what was to come. To quote him “the challenges and hardships are all part of God's plan, as he is preparing us for greatness”. It was only when Ashley won his first race in grade 10 that the plan started to become clear. Since then, Ashley's focus has been on training and improving his running time. This of cause comes with sacrifices, perseverance, and discipline. Ashley shares that his daily routines have been central to helping him alleviate the pressure and elevate his running game. During this episode we speak about how he manages when his routine becomes imbalanced when traveling and racing, as well as how he celebrates his wins while not removing his eyes from the main objective. Stay tuned, this is an episode not to be missed. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/coachedsuccess/message
