With the DOT's inclusion of boulevard conversions among the 10 possible alternatives for reconstruction, advocates for freeway removal have something to feel good about. The proposal adds three ethnic studies standards to ensure college readiness and the inclusion of multiple perspectives. Those standards include greater emphasis on Indigenous history and societal inequities. According to the proposal, the intention is to better reflect the diversity of Minnesota's student population. Feven Gerezgiher reports: The Minnesota committee on K-12 Academic Standards in Social Studies is wrapping up its 10 year cycle of review and revisions. New on the agenda is ethnic studies. The draft released last week says the intention is to reflect the diversity of Minnesota's student population. “Every student deserves to see themselves in their learning,” said Bobby Burnham, assistant commissioner for the Minnesota Department of Education. Burnham said the committee added three ethnic studies standards to ensure college readiness and the inclusion of multiple perspectives. Those standards include greater emphasis on Indigenous history and societal inequities.“A really important point is the academic standards are reviewed by Minnesotans for Minnesotans,” said Burnham. “We know that our students' education is at its strongest when Minnesotans are engaged in the planning process. So that's why each time our academic standards are up for review, a committee is formed of Minnesotans with varying perspectives and backgrounds from all across the state.”Critics of the ethnic studies standards led a tour across the state called Raise Our Standards. On their website, they cite opposition to critical race theory - which the commissioner says is not taught in K-12 education. In cities like Minneapolis and Saint Paul - where students of color are in the majority - ethnic studies initiatives are already being explored. At a January board meeting launching the pilot courses, Saint Paul superintendent Joe Gothard cited achievement disparities as a motivating factor.“We all continue to work and lead in a system of education that was not created for all students,” he said. “Our staff have been asking for strategies and supports that stick. Our district is committed to doing just that.”Education officials are welcoming feedback on the draft standards until August 16. Burnham says community members can submit comments via email or postal mail to Minnesota Department of Education, 1500 Highway 36 West, Roseville, MN 55113.

Wow. It’s finally easy to get a COVID vaccine shot. After months of waiting for the vaccine to become available, and more months of waiting to become eligible to get the shot, you can now make an appointment and just simply walk in almost anywhere.Fifty-year-olds can get in. Thirty-five-year-olds. Sixteen-year-olds.But when you show up at your appointment, you might be surprised. Where is everyone? Where are the lines?Vaccine hesitancy has set in. Or, you could say, the vaccine supply is catching up to the group of people who are unsure about or don’t want to get a COVID vaccine for various reasons. Two and half millions Minnesotans have already had at least one shot. This adds up to over half of everyone sixteen and older. And a whopping eighty-five percent of seniors sixty-five and older.Demand for vaccinations has gone down. Now health experts are focusing on hard to reach populations, who might have logistical challenges to getting a vaccine, and those with vaccine hesitancy. One way of doing this is through mobile vaccine units, which are visiting areas with lower vaccine coverage. Public health organizations are also disseminating information about the general safety and benefits of vaccination. The great hope is that Minnesota will reach that magic number of 80 percent vaccinated so that herd immunity will kick in and restrictions can be lifted. For MN Native News…. Marie: From Minnesota Native News… this is a COVID-19 Daily Update.MARIE:  I’m Marie Rock. MARIE: COVID is the ultimate puzzle. Some people never experience symptoms and have no clue they’ve been infected. Others get sick and never seem to get back to their healthy normal.People in that second category are long haulers. They experience what’s called “long COVID.” This is when they recover from the initial infection but then suffer through months of chronic post-COVID symptoms. Horrible fatigue. Brain fog. Shortness of breath. Chest pain. Gastrointestinal problems.Health experts predict 10 to 30 percent of cases will transition into long COVID.Because the disease hasn’t even been with us two years yet, the health community can’t say for certain—yet—how long… “long COVID” might last. Recently, a new twist has been added to the mystery of long COVID. Some long haulers are reporting feeling better after getting the vaccine. Is this wishful thinking?Health experts point out that some COVID effects—like damage to the heart—cannot be reversed by a vaccine. Yet, if long haulers are experiencing a lessening of symptoms after their shot—this could indicate that with some patients the virus never left them. It was circulating in their systems—until the vaccine cleared it out.As with much to do with this virus, the impact of the vaccine on long COVID will remain a mystery until more study can be devoted to it.For MN Native News…. Organizing for Change Podcast - Episode 26 Show Notes   Goal: “to equip coalitions, organizations, and individuals to bring change to their community”   Host, Amanda Decker joins Jason Anderson, trainer for the Montana Institute. Upon his discharge from the United States Army, Jason obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice (Minor in Psychology) at Moorhead State University. He has worked in the field of probation since 1998 – spending a decade as an adult felony probation/parole agent and 5 years as an Evidence-Based Practices project manager/trainer for the MN Dept. of Corrections.   Jason became the Director of the Itasca County Probation Department in 2013. In addition to his duties as a probation officer and manager, he has served as a trainer of various topics including Motivational Interviewing since 2001. He is an active member of 2 school-based substance abuse prevention coalitions in his community.   Jason began curriculum development and training delivery for The Montana Institute in 2016. A father of 2 boys (ages 15 and 17), he enjoys spending time outdoors with his family, singing in his church choir, community theater and running an occasional race.   On this episode we talked about the reason why we do this work.   Why does your why matter? Jason breaks down discovering your why and how it can motivate your community to change. We also talked about changing our approach in communication to create change in your community.   This is one of my all time favorite episodes and I think it will be one of yours too.   As always If you find this episode helpful, would you please help us get the word out by sharing it with a friend or colleague? Most people are not motivated by facts, they are motivated by an emotional tug. This is why your “why” matters. If your coalition is stuck, remind them of the why. If you are stuck, remind yourself of the why. It’s not always about “what is in it for us.” Appreciate and Understand Someone Else’s Perspective. Even though you may disagree with someone else’s perspective, it is important to have empathy and understand where someone is coming from. Just being willing to hear where someone is coming from and to express and acknowledge their perspective, can open the door for communication.       Don’t Be the Expert. We obviously know a lot about our field, or we wouldn’t be in it. But, our attitude of approach matters. If we come across as the “expert”, people tend to be defensive and shut down. Instead, Jason talks about having a curiosity and engaging people in the solution as a better method and approach to getting results.   Next Episode: Subscribe now for free and you won’t miss episode 027
