Washington, DC, June 11, 2026 —This month's podcast episode from the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) includes a brief overview of key public health funding included in the House of Representatives' the Fiscal Year 2027 (FY27) House Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS) Appropriations bill, which was voted out of the subcommittee, has since passed the full committee on a party line vote, setting it up for a vote on the House floor. The Senate version has yet to be released. Speakers also shared resources related to the ongoing Andes virus and Ebola outbreaks, in addition to a New World screwworm detection.   On June 24, NACCHO will host a webinar, "Engaging Your Members of Congress", where participants will learn how they can educate policymakers on the critical role local health departments play in communities and how recent changes at the federal level have impacted public health across the country.    Later in the program (7:56), Tim Wiedrich, Director of the Health Response and Licensure Section at North Dakota Department of Health and Human Services and guest speaker at the 2026 Preparedness Summit, joined the podcast to discuss the state's model for building and deploying a medical cache, which is available to public health agencies and health care entities across the state during and outside of emergencies. Wiedrich explained that this statewide model ensures that, when a need arises, operations such as logistics, transportation, and supply distribution are already aligned across sectors, aiding in a timely and effective response. He also explained that having uniform protocols across jurisdictions, having access to trained staff, and involving stakeholders in the planning process, including local health department and emergency management, are all necessary steps in building a strong system for stockpile management and distribution.   Read more about North Dakota's approach to strengthening response efforts across the state in a special feature by Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO).   ###   About NACCHO The National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) represents the over 3,300 local governmental health departments across the country. These city, county, metropolitan, district, and tribal departments work every day to protect and promote health and well-being for all people in their communities. The Gauteng Department of Health has raised concern over a sharp rise in malaria cases and related deaths across the province. While malaria is both preventable and treatable, delayed diagnosis can be fatal. Health officials say the increase is partly linked to travel to high-risk regions such as Limpopo and Mpumalanga, as well as neighbouring countries including Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi. As the world marks World Malaria Day on the 25th of April, the department is urging residents to remain vigilant, seek early treatment and take preventative measures to curb the spread of the disease. The American Academy ofPediatrics Safe Sleep recommendations play an important role in preventing these deaths and theABCs of safesleep.""A leading cause of infant mortality in Tennessee is preterm birth. Any infant born earlier than 37weeks gestation is considered preterm and is at higher risk for adverse outcomes, including death.""These are real children and real families, and unfortunately, far too often real tragedies, weneed to all work together to improve infant outcomes for families, communities, and the future ofTennessee." Washington, DC, April 25, 2025 — On this month's podcast episode, the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) speakers discuss the recent reorganization of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), including significant layoffs of staff working on public health programs, as well as the recently leaked funding “passback” document and what this means for public health. They also share an update on a lawsuit filed by some states against HHS on the clawback of billions of dollars of COVID-era supplemental funding. For more frequent updates, subscribe to NACCHO's News from Washington weekly newsletter: www.naccho.org/advocacy/news.   Later in the program (7:15), Philip “Phil” Huang, MD, MPH, Director and Health Authority at Dallas County Health and Human Services (DCHHS), and Miranda Grant, a DCHHS Program Manager for the Ending the HIV Epidemic initiative, join NACCHO to discuss DCHHS' efforts to prevent, detect, treat, and respond to HIV in Dallas County and the critical role local public health plays in improving health outcomes.    During the episode, they share the current state of the epidemic in Dallas County, the disproportionate impact on Black and Hispanic communities, the importance of community partnerships in reaching more diverse populations, the promising outlook for a reduction in new cases by 2030, and how fostering community engagement and data-driven planning will help address the epidemic. They highlight their trauma-informed learning collaborative, a county-wide initiative to help reduce workforce burnout and address stigma surrounding HIV. Dallas County has also seen a significant increase in PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) usage with up to 8,000 residents on PrEP in 2023 versus 300 people in 2014. However, without sustainable investments in HIV prevention, Dallas County faces a growing crisis in its communities and an economic strain – each HIV case prevented saves an estimated $420,000 in lifetime costs.
