Emergency Water Storage and Purification | Episode 341 Water is the foundation of survival. You can go weeks without food, but without water, you're in serious trouble within days. In this episode, we'll dive into the essentials of emergency water storage and purification, ensuring you're prepared for any crisis. Water Storage Basics The first step in water preparedness is storage. You'll need at least one gallon of water per person per day for drinking, cooking, and hygiene. For a family of four, that's 28 gallons per week! Options include large barrels, stackable water containers, or repurposing food-grade containers. Purification Techniques Even with stored water, contamination can happen. Have a few purification methods ready. Boiling water is simple and reliable, but it requires fuel and time. Filters, like those from Berkey or Sawyer, are portable and effective. Chemical treatments, such as water purification tablets or bleach (unscented, 5.25-8.25% sodium hypochlorite), are another backup. Just remember, 2 drops of bleach per quart will do the trick. Overcoming Challenges Freezing temperatures can ruin stored water, so insulate your containers if you're in a cold climate. For long-term storage, consider adding water stabilizers to prevent bacterial growth. Rainwater collection is another excellent option. The Prepper's Mindset How much water is enough? More than you think. Water isn't just for drinking; it's for cooking, cleaning, and even barter in a pinch. Take inventory of your family's needs, factor in pets or livestock, and build a solid water plan. With proper storage and purification, water won't be your weakest link in a crisis—it'll be your greatest asset. Tune in to learn more!

Asm. Joaquin Arambula (D–Fresno) has hit a roadblock in his attempt to reform the Fresno County Transportation Committee. Arambula proposed AB 650, which would add four members to the board to represent specific constituencies. After Arambula presented the bill, there was awkward silence on the committee for a minute. The committee chair, Assemblywoman Cecilia Aguiar-Curry, D-Yolo County, declared the bill dead. The West may be out of the woods in ensuring its water supply this year, but the water crisis is still very much alive, experts caution. The California Department of Natural Resources announced that the state would receive 100% water allocation for the first time since 2006, meaning that communities and farmers under the State Water Project would receive all of its water requests for the year. v Democrats in the California Senate on Wednesday said they want to raise taxes on some of the largest corporations so they can cut taxes for nearly every other business. All California businesses pay a state tax rate of 8.84% on income, a figure that has not changed since 1997. This new proposal would create two tax rates for businesses in California. Companies would pay 6.63% on the first $1.5 million they make. Any money made above that would be taxed at 10.99%. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In 2014, Californians approved Prop 1 which set aside more than $2.5 billion dollars for new water storage projects. But in light of the state's recent struggle with drought conditions, many are asking where did the money go? For more, KCBS Radio's Bret Burkhart and Patti Reising spoke with KCBS insider Phil Matier.
It was just last week when the federal drought monitor declared that California is no longer in a severe drought. But, that's not to say the drought is over in the state. Water experts say it will take a number of storms to catch up with years of dry weather. It's one of the reasons voters in California decided to try and do something about it in the form of water storage. In 2014, voters passed proposition 1 which set aside billions of dollars for more water storage in California. To see if that money is being used yet, KCBS Radio's Bret Burkhart and Patti Reising spoke with Felicia Marcus, former chair of the State Water Resources Control Board and a visiting fellow at Stanford University's Water in the West Program.

In this episode of What Matters Water TV + Podcast, we talk to experts about how Sites Reservoir in the Sacramento Valley is the future of water storage in California and why it is so crucial for our entire state, especially as we face a severe water crisis with the historic drought. There have been many discussions about Sites Reservoir and its potential to help us store more water for when it's needed most. We break down the project, how it works as part of California's water network and why it's such a vital project. Two of the show guests are from Northern California. Jerry Brown is the executive director of the Sites Project Authority, the organization tasked with building Sites Reservoir. From the beautiful Sacramento Valley, we have Frederick “Fritz” Durst who is the Board Chair of Sites Project Authority and the Reclamation District 108 board president. Representing Southern California, we have Heather Dyer who is the general manager of the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District and a returning guest to our show. And we're also delighted to have Adel Hagekhalil back with our show. He is the general manager of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California, the nation's largest water wholesaler that serves 19 million people. These four bring passion, enthusiasm and ingenuity to tackle the genuine and pressing issue of climate change impacts on California's water supply.

This important river is the source of drinking water for some 40 million residents, as well as the primary source of water for irrigation for over 5.5 million acres of agricultural land. A first ever Tier I water emergency declared by the US Bureau of Reclamation last year has put much of this at risk. Could climate migration finally be a thing in the United States?

Alisa Webster and Ben Mason kick back for a late night recording to discuss water storage and 72 hour emergency must haves!
Originally broadcast live from the KTalk Media studios in SLC, Utah on 10/17/2015. Show starts at 5:00. After the first, and very successful, PrepperCon expo, KTalk Media, one of the show sponsors, asked us if we would do a weekly show. After much hesitation, and a lot of delay, we finally decided to give it a try. Neither of us had ever done this before, but we jumped in. Originally called "PrepperCon" radio but then changed to "Prepper Talk Radio" after our first 40 episodes. After a three + year hiatus we have picked up where we left off, but with one additional member of the team. Prepper Talk Radio version 3.0 began podcasting in March 2022.
The majority of our infrastructure exists underground and out of sight. But there's one critical piece of our operation that we keep above ground. Usually way…way…way above ground. In this episode, we give you an in-depth look at water towers. What they're used for, how they work, what it takes to construct one, and so much more. We know they're easy to spot, but trust us, there's more than meets the eye. Host Jeff Szabo sits down with SCWA Lead Civil Engineer Scott Meyerdierks to learn how elevated storage tanks work, and why they're so critical to our operations. Deputy Lead Civil Engineer Pete Schembri also joins the program (6:19) to tell us what it's like to climb all the way to the top of one of our tanks, and more. Correspondent Seth Wallach checks-in with Assemblyman Fred W. Thiele, Jr. about SCWA's 900,000 gallon ground storage tank in Amagansett, and what that means for East End Residents. (11:48)Seth also talks with Cellular Program Manager Amanda McLeod to learn about an added benefit of elevated storage tanks. (21.43)
