Today Anna Smith talks to Oscar-nominated director Maite Alberdi about her new documentary The Eternal Memory, which follows a Chilean couple as they navigate the challenges of Alzheimer's disease together. She then talks to Ella Glendining about her BIFA-nominated documentary, Is There Anybody Out There? which charts her search for individuals with the same rare disability as herself. Journalist Augusto Góngora and actor Paulina Urrutia are the subject of The Eternal Memory, a touching testimony of the couple's bond in the face of Augusto's worsening dementia. ‘La Pauli,' as Augosto referred to his partner, took care of him after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at 62. Maite recalls how the couple had a unique approach to the disease where they saw ‘Alzeimher's as a challenge, not a tragedy'. The film uses a mix of archive footage from Augusto's broadcast days and new material as the couple go about their daily lives, noticing the sensory experience of the everyday and how it interacts with Augosto's condition. The Eternal Memory offers a unique and refreshing perspective on dementia, ageing and coupledom. Next, Anna Smith talks to Ella Glendining about the making of and motivation behind her documentary Is There Anybody Out There?. The film is personal, one woman's search to find someone else born with no hip joints and short femurs, but it is also deeply political, laying bare the ethics of medical intervention, exploring the impacts of ableism and documenting disabled joy. Ella talks about the inspiration behind the film, the challenges and surprises she faced while making it, and she reveals the projects she is most looking forward to seeing next! You can watch The Eternal Memory in select cinemas from the 10th November 2023. THE ETERNAL MEMORY tells a profound and moving love story that balances vibrant individual and collective remembrance with the longevity of an unbreakable human bond. Augusto and Paulina have been together and in love for 25 years. Eight years ago, their lives were forever changed by Augusto's Alzheimer's diagnosis. As one of Chile's most prominent cultural commentators and television presenters, Augusto is no stranger to building an archive of memory. Now he turns that work to his own life, trying to hold on to his identity with the help of his beloved Paulina, whose own pre-eminence as a famous actress and Chilean Minister of Culture predates her ceaselessly inventive manner of engaging with her husband. Day by day, the couple face this challenge head-on, relying on the tender affection and sense of humor shared between them that remains, remarkably, fully intact. THE ETERNAL MEMORY was the winner of the Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize for World Cinema – Documentary in 2023. Oscar nominated director Maite Alberdi (The Mole Agent) joins us for a conversation on her first encounter with Paulina and Augusto together and how seeing the fully integrated lives they were living inspired her, watching them embrace the withering psychological, emotional and physically journey they were both on, and the connected themes of love, compassion, empathy and devotion that The Mole Agent and The Eternal Memory share. Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia, affecting millions across the world. In the new documentary “The Eternal Memory,” director Maite Alberdi explores the disease intimately, following former Chilean journalist Augusto Góngora and his wife, Paulina Urrutia, as they navigate their 25 plus year relationship alongside Góngora's deteriorating memory. “The Eternal Memory” is the follow up to Alberdi's Academy Award nominated documentary “The Mole Agent.” Her new film won the Grand Jury Prize in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at Sundance. Today on FilmWeek, Larry speaks with Chilean film producer, director, documentarian, screenwriter, and film critic, Maite Alberdi, about her new film “The Eternal Memory” and the process of capturing the intimate moments of Góngora's Alzheimer's and Góngora and Urruria's relationship.

As a realistic account of the deprivations Alzheimers can bring, “The Eternal Memory” is harrowing. But it's also the story of Augusto's and Paulina's determined love in the face of this challenge. And, finally, it's the tale of Chile's tragic yet ultimately triumphant democracy. Maite Alberdi (director of the Oscar-nominated “The Mole Agent”) sat down with Mike at Sundance to discuss her film and how it shows memory as not the finished product of individual solitude, but ever-created between people and even within nations. “The Eternal Memory” was recently acquired by MTV Documentaries. In 2011 Maximilien Dejoie made a mockumentary about a highly contagious disease outbreak that essentially turned people into zombies. This week, we go behind the camera with some of the world's leading documentary filmmakers. As the World Health Organisation begin their visit to Wuhan to determine the origins of Covid-19, perhaps some clues can be gleaned from Hao Wu's documentary 76 days.
