Are we alone in the universe? Could there be other civilisations out there that we could possibly contact? In 1961, Astrophysicist Frank Drake tried to formulate an equation that could answer these questions.Today, we have finally reached a technological level that allows us to search for signs of life and technology on planets in distant star systems. So, “Is There Anybody Out There?”We'll be asking that question on this very special episode of Futureproof...Guests:Sean Jordan - Associate Professor in Biogeochemistry and Astrobiology at Dublin City University @SeanFJProfessor Johanna Vos - Astrophysicist specialising in exoplanet atmospheres in Trinity College Dublin @TCD_physicsProfessor Lisa Kalteneger - Professor of Astronomy at Cornell and current Director of the Carl Sagan Institute @KalteneggerLisa

This episode explores the intersection of human creativity and AI technology. Filmmakers Jonathan Keasey and Justin MacGregor who are partnering with Phil Egger of J4 on a slate of films assisted by cutting edge AI technology. Entitled Hum.AI.ne Entertainment, their new initiative is focused on the ethical use of AI in the creative process and reflects Jonathan's journey from 'intentional Luddite' to a champion of the technology and its potential to support human powered creativity. In this conversation, Jonathan and Justin describe their journey and their vision for using the new tools. Describing what the tools can - and importantly cannot yet - do , they outline how they will be working with it on a slate of commercial animated feature films, starting with the legend of GELART. Meanwhile, Phil Egger describes more about the technology and how the process works in practice. More About Jonathan, Justin and Phillip Jonathan Keasey is the founder of Mindriot Entertainment and an acclaimed screenwriter, producer, story hunter and proud member of the Writers Guild of America. He has been hired to write films for studios and streamers from Hollywood to Canada, France to China, Central America to Africa, and now beneath the Oceans. But most important of all, he just wants to make his family and friends proud before he becomes nutrients for an apple orchard. Dr. Justin MacGregor is Founder and Head of Transatlantic Content for Mindriot as well as the Head of Film at Trinity College, Dublin. His first feature film, “The Vigil (for Kurt Cobain)” screened at film festivals from Vancouver to Mumbai and was released by Vanguard Int'l and played on television sets worldwide after its theatrical run. His latest documentary, “Is There Anybody Out There? Young Voices from Inside a Pandemic” struck another sonic chord at a pivotal time, and premiered at the Virgin Media Dublin Int'l Film Festival in 2021. In between, MacGregor's award-winning theatre work includes the anti-war trilogy “The Play That Killed Me,” “God Wept and the Devil Laughed,” and “The Lonely Clouds of Guernica.” With a catalogue of work that's supported from Trinity to UNESCO. Phillip Egger is an attorney with over a decade of experience in AI acquisitions and development. He has three decades experience advising closely held businesses and owners of taxable estates. He received his Juris Doctorate degree from Gonzaga University School of Law and his Masters degree in U.S. federal tax law from the University of Florida. Today Anna Smith talks to Oscar-nominated director Maite Alberdi about her new documentary The Eternal Memory, which follows a Chilean couple as they navigate the challenges of Alzheimer's disease together. She then talks to Ella Glendining about her BIFA-nominated documentary, Is There Anybody Out There? which charts her search for individuals with the same rare disability as herself. Journalist Augusto Góngora and actor Paulina Urrutia are the subject of The Eternal Memory, a touching testimony of the couple's bond in the face of Augusto's worsening dementia. ‘La Pauli,' as Augosto referred to his partner, took care of him after he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's at 62. Maite recalls how the couple had a unique approach to the disease where they saw ‘Alzeimher's as a challenge, not a tragedy'. The film uses a mix of archive footage from Augusto's broadcast days and new material as the couple go about their daily lives, noticing the sensory experience of the everyday and how it interacts with Augosto's condition. The Eternal Memory offers a unique and refreshing perspective on dementia, ageing and coupledom. Next, Anna Smith talks to Ella Glendining about the making of and motivation behind her documentary Is There Anybody Out There?. The film is personal, one woman's search to find someone else born with no hip joints and short femurs, but it is also deeply political, laying bare the ethics of medical intervention, exploring the impacts of ableism and documenting disabled joy. Ella talks about the inspiration behind the film, the challenges and surprises she faced while making it, and she reveals the projects she is most looking forward to seeing next! On this week's Lever Time, David Sirota and journalist Laura Krantz are joined by Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb to discuss his research into extraterrestrial life.In 2017, a Maui telescope discovered an interstellar object that astronomers named Oumuamua (Hawaiian for “scout” or “messenger”) that had an elongated shape and an unusual acceleration not explained by gravity alone. That's when Harvard astrophysicist Avi Loeb suggested a controversial hypothesis: The object might be an extraterrestrial “light sail” — a thin metallic sheet that could harness sunlight for propulsion. Loeb continued to advocate for scientists to investigate astronomical anomalies, and in 2021, he co-founded the Galileo Project, which seeks to apply scientific rigor to eyewitness testimonies and other evidence related to potential alien technology on Earth.Loeb's outspoken views have made him a prominent and controversial figure. Some people champion his approach, while others accuse him of distracting from legitimate astronomical discoveries and misleading the public. In today's interview, David and Laura speak with Avi about his scientific approach. They also discuss the recent alien hearings in Mexico's Congress, how NASA's own technology for space monitoring and exploration hasn't been modernized, and how the stigma attached to extraterrestrial study hampers meaningful progress.A transcript of this episode is available here.Links: The Galileo Project How A Harvard Professor Became The World's Leading Alien Hunter (New York Times Magazine, 2023) Mexican Congress Shown ‘Non-Human' Corpses In UFO Hearing (The Hill, 2023) Is There Anybody Out There? In the second episode of our Creative Nonfiction Film podcast season, Sophie Fiennes discusses The Four Quartets and how she approaches documenting live performance on screen. In The Four Quartets, she captures the stage play of the same name, directed by and starring her brother, actor Ralph Fiennes. For the production, Ralph Fiennes adapted the T.S. Eliot poem for the stage — which was never originally intended to be performed that way — and then toured this production around the UK in 2021. Sophie Fiennes's film of The Four Quartets is neither live capture nor a full adaptation of the play. Instead, Fiennes remarkably documents the theatre production on screen, maintaining all the original lighting and blocking. Her choices of framing and camera movement really puts us in the black box theatre with Ralph Fiennes. Unlike most recorded theatre, where there is a constant sense of information loss, Sophie Fiennes gives us a sense of the theatrical space so we get a better sense of what we're missing when we're missing it. It's built into Sophie Fiennes's direction. Sophie Fiennes discusses Ralph Fiennes's production, the challenges of documenting the play on screen, and how working with Declan Donnellan of Cheek by Jowl just before she shot The Four Quartets changed how she thinks about acting and theatre. Tonight's episode is a response to those wonderful lines from William Carlos Williams: “It is ridiculous what airs we put on to seem profound, while our hearts gasp dying for want of love.” If these lines have the ring of truth, what aspects of our lives have we built up so meticulously, when all we really want is love? In my own life, I ask if perhaps poetry, writing—and even this podcast—fall into that category, and wonder if it's all worth it. The music used for the intro is Pink Floyd's "Is There Anybody Out There?" Don't forget to join Human Voices Wake Us on Patreon, or sign up for our newsletter here. Pink Floyd would score another big hit and some mainstream crossover success with their eleventh studio album, The Wall. Originally conceived by bassist Roger Waters, The Wall explores the self-isolation of a cynical rock star named Pink, and portrays events in his life from the loss of his father, to childhood trauma, to the pressures of rock stardom as bricks forming the wall. Parts of the story are autobiographical from Waters, and parts naturally are based on former front man Syd Barrett. The album was a commercial success, the most successful double album of all time, the second most popular Pink Floyd album behind their monstrous hit "Dark Side of the Moon," and would produce the groups only number 1 single on the charts with "Another Brick in the Wall, part 2." Critical reviews were mixed at first, with some considering the rock opera to be pretentious, but the reviews would turn more positive over time. This would be the last album to feature the classic band lineup. Richard Wright would be fired by Roger Waters during production, though he would stay on as a studio musician for the album. One further studio album would be produced before acrimony would lead to Waters departure from the band. What the Riff co-founder Brian Dickhute brings us this album for today's podcast. Brian is also using this as a swan song of sorts as he takes a break from regular podcasting duties to spend more time with the family. Thanks so much for all your work over these hundreds of podcasts, Brian! Hey YouThis well-known track leads off side three of the album and reflects the desperation as Pink realizes how the wall of isolation he has built has trapped him in a cell of his own creation. The inspiration for this song was the breakup of Waters' marriage. Is There Anybody Out There? In the film this song is used to transition from Pink the rock star to Pink the dictator. Session musician Joe DiBlasi was brought in to play the fingerstyle guitar on this piece.Nobody's HomeThe last song written for the album was the result of a fight between Roger Waters and David Gilmour. It was inspired by the isolation Waters felt during their 1977 tour and musings on Syd Barrett. Some of the lyrics are also built around Richard Wright, keyboardist, who was allegedly dealing with drug addiction at the time.VeraThis song is a flashback to days of World War II. The title was inspired by Vera Lynn, a British singer popular during the war who sang the song "We'll Meet Again." Waters lost his grandfather in WWI and his father in WWII.Bring the Boys Back HomeRoger Waters considers this brief song the central theme of the album. The idea is that not just war, but all activity including business and rock music should not be allowed to isolate a person from friends and family. Comfortably NumbOne of the more popular songs from the album, the music was written by David Gilmour and the lyrics by Roger Waters. A significant argument occurred between Gilmour and Waters on the arrangement of this piece, with Gilmour preferring a stripped-down format and Watters wanting a more symphonic approach. The contrasting sections of orchestration and more simplistic riffs is the result of the compromise made for the piece. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Frosty the Snowman by Jimmy Durante No, it isn't Christmas again. Popular entertainer Jimmy Durante passed away in January of 1980, and his is one of his best known songs. STAFF PICKS:The Spirit of Radio by Rush Bruce sneaks another Rush song in for Brian's final episode as a regular podcaster. The lead-off track to Rush's album "Permanent Waves" was inspired by the slogan of CFNY-FM in Toronto. FM radio was moving from a more free-form format to a more commercial format, and CFNY was bucking the trend. Damned If I Do by the Alan Parsons ProjectRob brings us a piece from Alan Parsons' fourth studio album called "Eve." The album is focused on the strength and characteristics of women and the difficulties they face in a world of men. "Damned if I do, damned if I don't, but I love you."Boom Boom (Out Go the Lights) by Pat Travers Wayne's staff pick is a boogie woogie cover of a blues song originally released by Little Walter in 1957. It is a well known party song which would not be politically correct today. There's some great guitar playing, and an excellent call-and-response in the live version. Ladies Night by Kool & The GangBrian's staff pick was a popular song in the dying days of disco. This song would see a revitalization of Kool & the Gang's popularity going into the early 80's. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Pipeline '76 by Roger PowellIt is unusual to find surfing instrumentals during the early 80's, but this one was around at the time.
Born with a disability so rare that no reliable statistics for it existence, filmmaker Ella Glendining wonders if there is anyone who can share the experience of living in a body like hers. In her documentary feature debut, Ella poses this simple question, IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE. It's a question which non-disabled people often take for granted. IS THERE ANYBODY OUT THERE leads to a journey to not only others who live like her, but to the realization that meeting them changes how she sees herself in the world. With intimate personal diaries, conversations with similarly bodied people and doctors treating her condition, and a searching and unique perspective, Is There Anybody Out There? invites the viewer to consider questions and assumptions they may have never encountered before. Are people born this way to be “fixed” by medicine? Is it ableist to see disabled people as living an undesired existence? With warmth and an infectious joy for her body and life as it is, Glendining takes you on an unforgettable experience that will change how you see others, like and unlike you. Director and writer Ella Glendining joins us to talk about her search for a similarly bodied person, traveling to America, meeting a well-known surgeon specializing in corrective surgery, her life affirming takeaway from the quest and the pride that comes with being an accomplished filmmaker. For news and updates go to: hotpropertyfilms.com
Filmmaker, Ella Glendining born with a rare disability, wants abled people to calm down and ask what people with disabilities need. She says the disabled should be celebrated and not made to feel less than others -- which happens in today's society. She brings her journey of trying to find someone who looks like her to calling out 'Ableism' in her documentary "Is There Anybody Out There?" to the Sundance Film Festival. German Symphonic Metal shooting stars Beyond the Black look back on a stratospheric success story. Already their 2015 debut album hit like a bomb in their home country. “Songs Of Love And Death” besieged the German Top 15 for weeks and led up to the band being awarded the Metal Hammer Award 2015 for “Best Debut”. Its successor “Lost In Forever” (2016) entered the German charts on #4 right away and paved ways for a huge tour from Germany over countries like UK, Russia or Japan. Since the band's live debut in 2014 they have played the world's biggest Metal festival Wacken Open Air several times and toured as a support act for heavyweights such as Aerosmith, Korn, Scorpions, Saxon or Within Temptation. In the course of album release number three (“Heart Of the Hurricane”) Beyond the Black absolved their first own European headline tour in fall 2019 consisting of over 20 shows in 10 countries – most of them sold out. But even before finishing their touring cycle Beyond the Black got back to the studio to write record number four. The highly anticipated “Horizons” was finally released in June 2020, entered the German album charts on #3 (CH #6, AT #16, BE #53) and marks the band's most successful album release to date. Now, two years later, Beyond the Black are back with a bang to start a new chapter. Following the release of highly acclaimed tracks “Reincarnation” and “Is There Anybody Out There” the band announces their new, fifth studio album, which will be self-titled “Beyond the Black” and drop on January 13th 2023!

Josephine Slabbert grew up in a house full of drug addicts, rapists, thieves and pimps. She was raped multiple times, lived in constant fear, suffered physical abuse and was forced to deal drugs. Her abusive husband was embarrassed by her race. It's a nightmare life none of us can imagine, but similar stories happen all over the world. Invite Josephine to discuss her experiences overcoming a lifetime of suffering, and how abused children can break the cycle of violence as they grow up. Who can a child turn to when his or her own parents are the abusers? The younger they are when the abuse starts, the more likely the child will be to blame him or herself. Josephine Slabbert is a survivor of a lifetime of child and domestic abuse. She is speaking out on normally taboo topics to help others who suffer realize they are not alone. Josephine currently lives in South Africa, runs a soup kitchen for her community and has cared for more than 100 refugee children from war torn countries. She is now happily married and the mother of five children. Tonight, we will discuss: 1. SUICIDE ON THE RISE: Statistics and articles detailing the uptick in suicides and self-harm. Contributing factors. 2. RESOURCES: What are some of the most commonly referred resources for those in distress? What can one expect when contacting them? What are their limitations and what is their authority? 3. SYSTEMIC FAILURES: Recounting anecdotes and accounts of ways in which these resources have failed to do the job we assume they are doing. 4. HOW TO HELP: Why these failures are happening. What is in our power to do about it? How can family, friends, laypersons, and professionals, ALL be better prepared to respond in an effective way to those who are depressed, despondent, or suicidal? We'll start off the evening with some topic-relevant Classic Rock played by Dr. Mathis, followed by Classic Rock trivia, in "The Rock & Roll Shrink Recalls," followed by our topic discussion.

Born is South Korea, Milton was adopted and brought to the states in 1979 where he learned English and the American culture. Today he lives in Harlem and operates a creative agency while completing his memoir entitled Slickyboy. Slickyboy Synopsis: A fatherless black boy was born to a Korean prostitute a decade and-a-half after the Korean War. Left to roam his camptown with a pack of homeless kids, little Milton-ah fights, steals and drinks while his mother works long hours. All until the age of 8, when he's adopted from the country that never claimed him, by a black military family from Texas, the Washingtons. Slickyboy is about the love and the loss of one mother, and a finding of another, with a lifetime of living in between.
