Director Mohammad Rasoulof discusses his new film, The Seed of the Sacred Fig, with fellow Director Ramin Bahrani in a Q&A at the DGA theater in New York. In the conversation, he discusses his utilization of modern online spaces in the film as a reflection of current sentiments, shooting the film clandestinely to avoid castigation, and using his own personal experiences as reference for events within the film. Screened as part of the DGA's Global Cinema Series, the film tells the story of Iman, an investigating Judge of Tehran's court system who becomes increasingly paranoid after his gun goes missing. With his wife and daughters as the prime suspects, he grapples with distrust in his household as political unrest unfolds in the streets. Book Vs. Movie: Fahrenheit 451The Ray Bradbury 1953 Classic Novel Vs. the 2018 HBO AdaptationThe Margos turn up the heat (get it?) with a look at the 1953 literary classic Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury--a banned book for decades. Inspired by the Cold War and the House of Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) investigating actors, artists, and writers claiming communism, Bradbury's work has been controversial since its publication over its depiction of an America that embraces book burning and a total lack of individualism. The story centers around a “fireman,” Guy Montag, an American in the not-so-distant future whose job is to burn all deemed objectionable books. He seems to live an ordinary life, not questioning his line of work along with his wife Mildred, who is endlessly watching TV screens (“parlor walls”) that contain her “real family.” One day, he meets teenage neighbor Clarisse, who lives a life built on free thinking, which is odd to Guy. When Clarisse goes missing, and Guy's wife believes he is behaving suspiciously (when she is not overdosing), we learn he has a big secret. He has been storing away contraband books and starting to read what has before been banned. The 2018 adaptation is written and directed by Ramin Bahrani and will be the movie we compare to the original material in this episode. Writer, Director Ramin Bahrani Talks about his new Documentary '2nd Chance' expanding into more theaters, Friday, December 9, 2022. More known for his feature film work, Iranian-American writer and director Ramin Bahrani steps into the field of documentary film making with '2nd Chance', a film that follows the misadventures of failed pizzeria owner, Richard Davis, who in 1969 sets out to invent the modern day bullet proof vest. To prove how effective his vest is, Davis sets out to shoot himself in the chest an incredible 192 times, that allows his company to become the largest manufacture of body armor in the United States and one of the top producers in the world. His creation has been used by police forces and the military the world over. Davis' downfall begins when a police officer loses his life while wearing a Second Chance vest, and reveals a man full of contradictions cultivated over decades of reckless behavior. Davis somehow manages to save lives while endangering countless more in the process. In speaking with Bahrani, we discuss the loss of the Iranian national team to Team U.S.A. in the World Cup, what it was like to transitioning from what was originally going to be a narrative picture into a documentary, using countless hours of footage and interviewing people who knew David into a remarkable story of, "I wouldn't believe it if we didn't have proof that it existed." Official Synposis: In 1969 a bankrupt pizzeria owner, Richard Davis, invented the modern-day bulletproof vest. To prove that it worked, he shot himself — point blank — 192 times. Davis then launched Second Chance, which became one of the largest body armor companies in the world. Charming and brash, he directed sensational marketing films, earning him celebrity status among police and gun owners across the country. But the death of a police officer wearing a Second Chance vest catalyzes Davis' fall, and reveals a man full of contradictions cultivated over decades of reckless behavior. Equally as questionable as he was captivating, Davis saved thousands of lives while endangering exponentially more. Ramin Bahrani's debut feature documentary, 2nd Chance takes an in-depth look at a former pizzeria owner, Richard Davis, the man who invented the modern-day bulletproof vest. Oscar-nominated filmmaker Ramin Bahrani (Chop Shop, 99 Homes, White Tiger) continues his fascination with the perilous pursuit of the American Dream as seen through a uniquely individual lens. The film shrewdly juxtaposes Richard Davis' actions with those of his righteous right-hand man, Aaron Westrick. Unwilling to passively present questionable truths, Bahrani instead lays bare the complexities of one man's supposed virtue while speaking to the nature of power and impunity in America. Director and producer Ramin Bahrani joins us for a conversation on making the leap into feature documentary, his fascination with Richard Davis and his penchant for self mythology, gun culture and the invaluable opportunity for redemption and reconciliation. This week, we focus on Frontline documentary Being Mortal, in which Boston surgeon Atul Gawande talks to doctors and patients about end of life care. The film highlights the sometimes woeful like of preparation and emotional intelligence shown by doctors and the issues that arise in that critical period.  We also flag Ramin Bahrani's The White Tiger.  The film looks at class and caste divide in India as a poor villager rises up to become a successful entrepreneur.

On this week's episode of Kickin & Streamin Podcast, Graham & Jocelyn discuss the Oscar-nominated Netflix movie The White Tiger starring Adarsh Gourav, Priyanka Chopra Jonas, and Rajkummar Rao. Graham begins by telling the story of Ramin Bahrani and a friend who he met as students at NYU school of filmmaking and how they decided they'd one day make a movie together as Indian-Americans, and even though they went their separate ways, years later, they reunited to make The White Tiger.  Graham & Jocelyn delve into the meat-and-bone of the film's topic of class; which is an indictment of the caste system of India. Graham & Jocelyn drew parallels between India's caste system and America's history of racism and white supremacy This podcast was livestreamed on our Facebook, Twitter, Twitch, and our YouTube channel and it's available to watch. please don't forget to subscribe for future live episodes every Saturday at 1 P.M. The Film Board by The Next Reel Film Podcasts

The Film Board convenes to talk about Ramin Bahrani's new Netflix film The White Tiger as our first film discussion of 2021. What does the film have to say about India's caste system and does it relate universally to the haves and have nots? The performances are great, particularly from Adarsh Gourav as the lead, but the structure is a bit of a stumbling block for us. But is it enough of a stumble to keep us from enjoying it? Andy Nelson, Ocean Murff, and Kyle Olson meet in the board room to talk about the film and what they thought of it.
