NASCAR champion William Byron has ascended auto racing more rapidly than anyone in recent memory. Going into his sophomore season in the NASCAR Cup Series, the driver looks to build on his rookie of the year campaign with a new crew chief, an iconic No. 24 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 race car and support from Hendrick Motorsports. Byron has quickly amassed an impressive list of accomplishments – especially considering he first drove a race car just six years ago. Hendrick Motorsports signed Byron, then 18, in August 2016 when he was a record-breaking rookie in the NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series. By the end of his season driving for Kyle Busch Motorsports, he had racked up an astounding seven victories, 3,248 laps led, and three pole positions en route to rookie of the year honors. It was the most successful debut season in series history. In 2017, he won the NASCAR Xfinity Series for Hendrick Motorsports affiliate JR Motorsports. As Byron competed for a championship in the Xfinity Series, Hendrick Motorsports announced his next – and biggest – career move in August 2017. Not only would he take the next step to the elite NASCAR Cup Series, but it would be in the iconic No. 24 Chevrolet made famous by four-time Cup Series champion and NASCAR Hall of Famer Jeff Gordon and his storied Rainbow Warriors team. Last year in 2019 he won 5 poles including Daytona. I caught up with the 22-year-old Liberty Student right before this year's Daytona 500. Enjoy this conversation with one of the hottest drivers to come along in NASCAR.
Jamie Little joined FOX NASCAR in 2015 for its fifteenth season and brought thirteen years of broadcasting experience and a lifetime of racing knowledge to her pit reporting duties in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series and NASCAR Xfinity series. Prior to joining FOX, Little spent thirteen years at ESPN/ABC as a reporter for NASCAR, IndyCar Series, Winter X Games, and Summer X Games telecasts. She was the first female pit reporter for the TV broadcast of the prestigious Indianapolis 500 in 2004 and the first female to cover televised supercross and motorcross events; she was also one of the first female reporters in X Games history. She is the author of Essential Car Care for Women, and she has worked the red carpet for the ESPYs in addition to hosting numerous NASCAR events away from the track. The popular racing video game “MX World Tour Featuring Jamie Little” bears her name and likeness. She also held a cameo role in the 2005 feature film Fantastic Four and Supercross the Movie starring Channing Tatum. Jamie and I talk about her ascension in the male dominated field of motor sports reporting, forgiveness, her complicated relationship with her father, and the reality of #momguilt.
The 2014 Daytona 500, the 56th running of the event, was held on February 23, 2014 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. Contested over 200 laps and 500 miles (800 km) on the 2.5 miles (4.0 km) asphalt tri-oval, it was the first race of the 2014 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. Dale Earnhardt, Jr., driving for Hendrick Motorsports, won the race, making this his second Daytona 500 victory breaking a 55-race winless streak. Denny Hamlin finished 2nd, while Brad Keselowski, Jeff Gordon, and Jimmie Johnson rounded out the Top 5. This race had seven cautions and 42 lead changes among 18 different drivers. The top rookies of this race were polesitter Austin Dillon (9th), Alex Bowman (23rd), and Brian Scott (25th).
The 2011 Daytona 500, the 53rd running of the event, was held on February 20, 2011 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida as the first race of the 2011 NASCAR Sprint Cup season. Trevor Bayne, driving for Wood Brothers Racing, won the race becoming the youngest Daytona 500 winner. Carl Edwards finished second, while David Gilliland, Bobby Labonte, and Kurt Busch rounded out the Top 5. Bayne had taken the lead shortly before the final restart and maintained it to win his first Cup Series race and Wood Brothers' fifth Daytona 500. The race featured 16 cautions and 74 lead changes among 22 different drivers. Following the race, Edwards led the Drivers' Championship with 42 points, one ahead of Gilliland and Labonte. Ford led the Manufacturers' Championship with nine points, three ahead of Toyota and five ahead of Dodge. A total of 182,000 people attended the race, while 15.6 million watched it on television.
The 2009 Daytona 500, the 51st running of the event, was held on February 15, 2009 at Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida as the first points-paying race of the 2009 NASCAR Sprint Cup season and the last 500 of the 2000s decade. The race was won by Matt Kenseth, making a car numbered 17 winning the race for the first time in 20 years since Darrell Waltrip's win back in 1989 and the first Daytona 500 win for Roush Fenway Racing. The race was called off with 48 laps to go after a severe rainstorm that had been lingering throughout the area hit the track.
