Today the salary cap is an NBA institution, something fans take for granted as part of the fabric of the league or an obstacle to their favorite team’s chances to win a championship. In the early 1980s, however, a salary cap was not only novel but nonexistent. The Cap: How Larry Fleisher and David Stern Built the Modern NBA (University of Nebraska Press, 2020) tells the fascinating, behind-the-scenes story of the deal between the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association that created the salary cap in 1983, the first in all of sports, against the backdrop of a looming players’ strike on one side and threatened economic collapse on the other. Joshua Mendelsohn illustrates how the salary cap was more than just professional basketball’s economic foundation—it was a grand bargain, a compromise meant to end the chaos that had gripped the sport since the early 1960s. The NBA had spent decades in a vulnerable position financially and legally, unique in professional sports. It entered the 1980s badly battered, something no one knew better than a few legendary NBA figures: Larry Fleisher, general counsel and negotiator for the National Basketball Players Association; Larry O’Brien, the commissioner; and David Stern, who led negotiations for the NBA and would be named the commissioner a few months after the salary cap deal was reached. As a result, in 1983 the NBA and its players made a novel settlement. The players gave up infinite pay increases, but they gained a guaranteed piece of the league’s revenue and free agency to play where they wished—a combination that did not exist before in professional sports but as a result became standard for the NBA, NFL, and NHL as well. The Cap explores in detail not only the high-stakes negotiations in the early 1980s but all the twists and turns through the decades that led the parties to reach a salary cap compromise. It is a compelling story that involves notable players, colorful owners, visionary league and union officials, and a sport trying to solidify a bright future despite a turbulent past and present. This is a story missing from the landscape of basketball history. Paul Knepper used to cover the Knicks for Bleacher Report. His first book, The Knicks of the Nineties: Ewing, Oakley, Starks and the Brawlers That Almost Won It All was published in September 2020. LOS ANGELES -- Brooklyn’s now star-laden solidified with James Harden, Kevin Durant, and first-time coach Steve Nash -- all MVPs and Kyrie Irving -- who along with Durant has something on the resume that Harden and the coach aspire to -- NBA Champion. Inheriting a bleak Brooklyn milieu, Nets GM Sean Marks got the franchise into the playoffs with grit via coach Kenny Atkinson and players like Caris LeVert and Jarrett Allen, who are gone. Two key questions emerge -- -- one tangible and the other philosophical -- vis-à-vis Brooklyn’s culture: Will the ultra-talented Nets defend, get deflections, 50-50 balls, blocks, stops, rebounds, and take charges with tenacity? Will the sustained sacrifice, accountability, chemistry, and commitment that will determine Brooklyn’s fate be embraced systematically throughout the roster? Some of the best moves in life are the ones you never make, and Marks wants to be holding The Larry O’Brien trophy and not reflecting on that mantra.

Podcast: The Smart City Podcast Episode: Cybersecurity and Intelligent Buildings with Larry O'Brien and Eduard Fidler Hosted by Jim FrazerPub date: 2020-05-01Addressing the crucial issue of cybersecurity in today’s smart buildings is a challenge. Like the manufacturing sector, the building automation sector is going through its own digital transformation. Increasingly, end-users are moving away from the older proprietary systems of the past and adopting edge-to-cloud computing architectures. There is a drive to deploy more lower-cost sensors, both wired and wireless, to gather as much data as possible. At the same time, the industry has a considerable installed base of legacy building automation systems, applications, devices, and networks that must be managed, maintained, and gradually modernized. All of these factors create unique cybersecurity challenges. The ubiquitous connectivity and remote operations promised by IoT bring with it many security concerns. Legacy systems pose their own risks and vulnerabilities and are no longer the obscure systems that nobody is interested in anymore. Attackers take advantage of known vulnerabilities in both new and existing systems to disrupt operations, steal customer data, and cause destruction. Let me take you back to the first recreational soccer trophy that you ever "won" . I'll tell you this, the NFL needs new inspiration in terms of trophy design. I think the Lombardi trophy is absolutely pathetic. It's a sorry excuse for an epic league - don't get me started about the Larry O'Brien trophy, as it just copies the Lombardi trophy.

Hot off their scintillating appearance on Fantasy Football Bosses, Lane and I invite Anthony Sellers and Gary Wolfe on our show to not only be the first guests on Lemon & The Fro but to also complete the first crossover in the history of the Hyphen Podcast Group. We start off with some MLB playoffs, as Lane’s Cubs faced off against the Nationals in Game 5 of the NLDS that night. The Cubs pulled through but that didn’t stop me from putting the Nats in the World Series. We spend a few minutes talking about the USMNT’s failure to make the World Cup before recapping our Super Bowl picks at the quarter mark of the 2017 NFL season. Finally, our NBA preview quickly devolves into teams we’ll enjoy watching throughout the year as we almost all agree that the Warriors will repeat as champions. Lane and Anthony are all in on Believeland while Gary and I just don’t see the Larry O’Brien trophy leaving the Bay Area. Lane once again proves he’s built for this; Anthony and Gary hold their own, and I just fill in the spaces when they aren’t talking. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lemon-on-the-edge/support

The NFL season is now a quarter done. Their's still plenty to talk about, but with the calendar shifting from September to October, we eagerly wait for the start of the NBA season. Some of our favorite players are hoping for a successful run at the Larry O'Brien trophy. While others are more concerned about their future contracts, and what their value will be on the open market. Others are either delusional about what their team can achieve this upcoming season, or calling out reporters. This NBA season certainly should be an entertaining one.

Carlo Fanelli analyses what was accomplished at Toronto City Hall to limit the regressive measures introduced by Mayor Rob Ford and the shape of the battles still to come. Political scientist Dennis Pilon reflects on the history of municipal amalgamations that bring to power right-wing mayors like Rob Ford in Toronto and Larry O’Brien in Ottawa largely owing to votes from once independent outlying middle class and wealthy suburban communities that swamp the votes of those residing in the city proper. Political economist Sam Gindin unravels the European debt crisis and austerity agendas of governments everywhere and their impact on a stagnating global economy. He examines the limitations of resistance movements as they emerged in 2011 and suggests new strategies for 2012.
