The other day I was on the phone with my friend Neale James and we were talking about a recent episode of his podcast The Photowalk, on which he was talking to our mutual friend Sean Tucker about creativity. “I invite you,” Neale begins the episode, “to imagine a five-pointed star. Now on each point of the star, I'd like you to think of a word that's important to you in terms of creativity or your creativity. Each is a kind of cornerstone of the why and even how you create as of today.” As an aside, if you're not listening to Neale's show, you really should give it a try. Neale is a terrific host and his episodes are masterclasses in audio production and atmosphere. Anyway, as we were talking about his episode with Sean, he asked what the points on my creative star might be. On one hand, “why do you create?” is a deceptively simple question that many of us spend inordinate amounts of time wrestling with — at least I do. I think that Neale's clever addition “as of today” gives us a little wiggle room and leaves the possibility open that these five terms don't have to define our making for all eternity, but rather just for now. It's one of the reasons that I love this as an exercise. While the creative process itself is important, I think that checking in with ourselves around why we create is equally valuable — maybe even more so because it allows us to square what we're making against why we're making it.QUESTIONSWhat are some of the points on your creative star?If you enjoyed this Iteration, I would love it if you would share it with a friend or two. And if it resonated with you on some level, I'd love to know why. Immerse into the peace and quiet of the early morning on the island with Margaret. Margaret shares thoughts about overwhelm and how to narrow down which channels to use for yourself. A comment on Neale James' recent podcast with Sean Tucker where they chat about overthinking and how to learn to listen to your own intuition and not be distracted by whether your art or writing or music will be liked by others. Some thoughts on journalling and how writing things down can mean the difference between remembering important things. As well as some readings from Margaret's notebooks. Breathe Pictures Photography Podcast: Documentaries and Interviews
This week, join me, Neale James on the show in West Africa and journey with our Photowalk team as we explore The Gambia with those attending this special Photowalk Retreat; Mat Bobby, Lynn Fraser, Michael Assmann and Shannon Coppin, guided by photojournalist Jason Florio and film producer Andy Thompson plus new-found Gambian friends. We walk and learn together about what makes this small, welcoming country known as The Smiling Coast so uniquely special, how a recent political past has left an indelible mark, and how the Gambian people's resilience has earned a peaceful future ahead. We discuss why some of the country's youth are making dangerous journeys across the Atlantic to the Canary Islands aboard small pirogue fishing boats; you'll meet the most incredible students and staff at a school, take shade under the Tree of Life, come within mere inches of the most feared reptile on Earth and our fellow Photowalkers share their thoughts as we adventure during this retreat to West Africa. Links to all guests and features will be on the showpage, my sincere thanks to MPB.com who sponsor this show and the Extra Milers without whom we wouldn't be walking each week. WHY: A Sketchbook of Life is available here.

Kev's having a yard sale! Neale is planning a lens raid of his tardis like cupboard of doom looking for Kev's spare 23 and 35mm lenses as today we ask, can zoom lenses hold a candle to a prime, and what's better for documentary work plus overall quality? Also camera strap love for Peak Design and Spider Camera Holsters, whilst lamenting the change of design of the latter, electronic and mechanical shutter selection choices, the most extraordinary wedding disaster story, the best kind of time capsule for showing and sharing important family photographs, the Dutch film factory that is or isn't there in '23, photographing football and the Beluga whale striker. Neale is getting nostalgic about the old school days, giving money away (maybe) and Kev returns from Spain with family news, plus it seems the break has convinced him to retire?!?!? WHAT??? But what from? From photography, from The FujiCast? Is it really the end of the road? We talk about his life decision, how the wedding industry has changed and will change further wedding photographers in the UK. Also this week, Photosophy, the philosophy behind photography, Neale is spotted climbing Mont Blanc or is he, is the X100V a decent professional wedding camera, are we photographing more hours for the same money, and are Tikkety Tokkers really stealing pro photographer's shots from over their shoulders to make influencer shorts? Guess who's turned 50? Kev's celebrating his half century in España, but proving the hardest person to buy a gift, so FIFTY NOT OUT, but don't mention the cricket - and that's not the secret by the way. We talk about the ideal camera resolution required for high quality studio portraits, how and where to store your precious back catalogue and another where; where do you read and enjoy your photobooks? Also, post-photoshoot and backup rituals, which presets to use and how often do you make a picture you TRULY love? THIS WEEK'S LIST OF LINK GOODNESS... Kev sips his first ceveza by the pool serenaded by several thousand cicadas in the midday sun upon a hillside somewhere in Spain, but fortunately, we recorded episodes in advance, so this week; changing out from a DSLR to a ‘vintage' Fujifilm X-T1, will it be good enough considering its age? Also, choosing your first lens for the Fujifilm system, Kev's old cameras keep turning up thousands of miles away in Africa, inspired by artwork, hyper-realist portraits, turning professional in 18 months and just why is there a sepia-toned preset still??? Kev's demob happy, counting down the days with even more relish to his five and a half weeks of vacaciones as they say in España. We talk about our forever cameras, shooting pro with the 100V, there's a Summer appeal for questions, the latest Fujifilm camera phone app; it seems not all is well in app land, more thoughts and ideas for camera shooters who photograph wearing prescription glasses, even more back button focus and exposure tips, the lifetime of hard drives, what makes a natural photo natural, making podcasts, backing up pictures on your travels, quick culling tips, Kev's diet and where has the GNARBOX gone? Kev deliberates over a close family call, and looks forward to a five week Mediterranean road trip, or at least a seat by the pool, where he'll learn to look through a camera eye piece wearing specs and spend some time with his latest Fujifilm camera purchase! Also today, bringing vintage film alive decades after it was originally shot, advice we've collated across the years of professional shooting, a 'sort of' announcement for a FujiCast event in 2024, exposure compensation, file formats including HEIF, the truth about videographers and other stories. This week Kev looks for a train that may be running and wonders whether he might have shot Sony, if only he could work out the menu system?!?!?! We persuade or at least discuss with one emailer, why switching to Fujifilm cameras is timely and ask which Fujifilm camera persuaded us to switch? We muse why American photographers make more money from print post-sales in the land of weddings and ask; do you feel like you have mastered photography or are still a work in progress? Also this week, best lens for sports photography, auto focus, proprietary versus third party lens set ups, the book London by Richard Bryant, curved monitors for photography, truth in photojournalism and the new Fujifilm app. THIS WEEK'S LIST OF LINK GOODNESS... Also on the show, getting more bang for your buck in backup-land, photographing in a pyramid, displaying your pictures in the myriad of aspect ratio frames available, why wedding cake makers are miffed with Bake Off, best skin tone film simulations, jpeg compression and choose your favourite ever lens chaps! Also a new feature this week about photography films on YouTube. This week, The Photographic Eye channel's film about William Eggleston's approach to photography, the 'dilemma of boring photographs'. Kev and Neale take a jaunt to London and it results in a later release, well that's the boy's excuse - and they're sticking by it. Today on the show, life cycles of mirrorless versus DSLR, front command dial problems and is ai going to cause as many problems for photographers as we fear? Also, changing Adobe subscriptions while keeping photos in the cloud safe, attaching vintage lenses and online sales advice. Neale's very excited as his 16-55mm lens is due to arrive whilst the show is being recorded and Kev's readying himself for the start of the wedding season. Today questions and mails about a special Fujifilm and NHS picture competition to celebrate 75 years of the health service, choosing the best monitor for editing and programs for editing, starting a photowalk and workshop business, linear motor lenses, eating garlic as defence, slower lightroom with higher resolution sensors, manual focus peaking problems, restoring photos and used cameras, plus our guest is London street photographer, Mr. Whisper, back for part two of his chat with Neale. Neale has a bad case of flight wind and Kev is saving £1 a week for the rest of his life so he can afford Leica's new Monochrom camera, whilst wishing and hoping that Fujifilm may at last release their own dedicated BW-only camera, especially now that even Pentax have launched theirs! One thing is for sure, both our boys are lamenting the closure of DPReview. Questions today on sharpening; to sharpen or not to sharpen, switching from a DLSR with an optical viewfinder to an electronic viewfinder in a Fujifilm mirrorless, building a new portfolio, working for free, removing pictures of those who have passed from online portfolios, shooting tethered with Fujifilm cameras, wonky frozen sub monitors and more. Kev's still doing the walk of shame following his phone ringing at a funeral, though it seems Neale is to blame! Today, film simulations and how they work in that magic box we call a camera, keeping up with corporate speak, the blueprint for a new photography business, website advice, simple ‘CRM' and embracing free marketing platforms. Also, we're poking the bear on the Instagram theme, let's call it 'the rematch,' photo books or YouTube, which works best in terms of tuition, colour casts in Lightroom and is an X-T3 still a good purchase. With 2022 drawing to a close, and ‘The Assignment' taking up residence within the Friday Photowalk show for the next and new season, I thought I should like to set a challenge as the penultimate one in the Monday series. Today, I'm setting a challenge that doesn't actually require you to make a new picture, moreover a request for you to look back at your work from the last year. The full assignment is within the show and I'll be fascinated to see what you come up with, so email what you make to the show via the contact page remembering that today, I also need some words to go alongside your photograph/s.

In today's episode we visit Ranscombe Bottom, Morgan's Hill and the very spooky Furze Knoll following a route that Glyn wrote about in his blog dated 17 September 2020. Use the link below for Glyn's superb photographs and a description of the walk including the route map. But before doing so we have a chat about what we've been up since the last podcast including a recce for a future blog and podcast; a white out in blizzard conditions; and Glyn's walk around the Fonthill Estate. We also recommend the trilogy written by local author Nick Cowen about the rambles of a young Henry Chalk, Pedestrian Tourist, who wanders through south Wiltshire in the early 19th century including his challenge to trespass into the Fonthill Estate and climb the Fonthill Folly before being caught. Paul's challenge was to say the word “tour”! You'll find a link to the publishers of Nick Cowen's book below. Then on to the walk. This walk takes us from Ozzie's Kebab van in the layby on the A4 at Quemerford Gate to the remarkable landscape of Ranscombe Bottom via the springs that are the source of the River Marden – a beautiful, peaceful spot filled with birdsong. From the Bottom we head towards the Roman road from Bath to Speen near Newbury and we debate what constitutes a dull Roman road! Then a stiff climb up to Morgan's Hill with its grizzly past and World War I connections as a Zeppelin listening station. From there it was a hop skip and a jump to the mysterious and frankly quite creepy Furze Knoll. Finally we head to Calstone Wellington and its magnificent church and mill, before heading back in search of a kebab. Also on the walk we discuss the remarkable graffiti in St Mary's Church, Calstone Wellington, the earliest (that we found) dating back to 1647, and the unlikely sounding Wiltshire Medieval Graffiti Survey website. During the course of the podcast we spend a disproportionate amount of time discussing the thorny issue of blocked public rights of way, something we encounter several times on the walk. And it's a subject we'll return to in the next podcast. It's becoming a bit of theme! We finish with a reminder about the offer to listeners of the podcast from Lowa Boots UK. You'll need to listen to the podcast for details of how you can save 20% off their walking boots and shoes. The music and sounds in the podcast are provided by the multi-talented Steve Dixon. The piece in the Introduction is entitled “The Holloway”, whilst the piece introducing us to the walk is entitled “Eyes Looking East”. Steve also designed the Wiltshire Wildlife Trust information board at Morgan's Hill. Episode 29 Neale James Documentary Wedding Photographer Welcome to Episode 29 where we speak with the super talented smooth talking Documentary Wedding Photographer who's shot nearly 900 weddings so far! Neale is also film maker, voice over artist and Podcasting demon Neale James. Neale originally came from the glorious world of Radio, where he and his smooth mellow voice graced the airwaves of Radio 1 for many years. We have to say Neale is one talented and very busy man, he’s a busy documentary wedding photographer, a voice over artist, and he also runs 2 podcasts. One of which many of you will know as the Fujicast, which he hosts with his fellow partner in crime, and Fujifilm X Photographer Kevin Mullins. On top of that still manages to host a daily podcast called ‘Photography Daily Podcast’ and even edits podcast shows for others. We don’t know how he does it! There’s no way we can cover all of Neale’s exploits in one podcast, so in this episode we try to understand a little about Neale and his work as a Documentary wedding Photographer. We get the low down on how many weddings he photographs, how he does it, why he does it, and persuade him to share some of his methods and secrets, of his business and shooting techniques. Of course we cover what kit he’s using for all his work, and also explore his ‘Photofilm’ product which he put together many years ago, and find out why it’s such a success! Don’t forget, we have our fun mid show ‘Rapid Fire Round’, where we put Neale on the spot for a quick fire 10 questions, that may not always relate to photography and can also have some very bizarre answers.. Hello, my name is Gabrielle Motola, welcome to Stranger Curiosity. I'm a photographer and writer based in London. I love meeting people and having compelling conversations with folks I know and ones I don't. I especially enjoy approaching people I don't know but am curious about. Before COVID19 changed our daily lives, I used to approach strangers on the street to photograph and talk with them. I would do this most every day. But For the moment, because of the pandemic, this is not something I feel I can do safely, and so this podcast is my way of dealing with the missing of that. I am continuing to connect with people through the airwaves, making technology serve us instead of the other way around perhaps for the first time ever- physical distance is not a barrier. We are all told not to talk to strangers, aren't we? But I look at most anyone as a storybook with interesting tales to tell. So come listen in to our conversations and be inspired. In this episode, I sat down with six members of the photographic professional community: Neale James, Nick Dunmar, Sean Tucker, Sheryl Garett, Skye Trayler, and David Hoffman, checked in with where we were and how we are affected by the covid19 situation at present and had a roundtable discussion about photography, its role in covid19, and explored how professional practice is changing, namely what we as photographic industry members can be doing to help ourselves now and each other moving into the future. It takes Neale a while to latch on to this concept, but co-host Chris has a point to make about how to think about your body in terms of building it like you would a career ladder. Presented by fitness expert Chris Griffiths and presenter Neale James, this is the final episode of FitAs before it formally becomes the new Advantage Fitness podcast. We thought you'd enjoy a chance to hear all the episodes recorded up to this point now by the two hosts.
Recorded when the show was known as FitAs, fitness and nutrition expert Chris Griffiths attempts to answer that question; 'Why do some people tour the town’s gyms, but never achieve their fitness goals?' This is a new podcast produced by podcaster Neale James, co presented by fitness expert Chris Griffiths from Advantage Fitness with one goal in mind, to prise you from the couch and get you thinking about your personal goals for physical well being.
Former paramedic now Canadian FujiFilm X-Photographer talks about how photography helped him treat and overcome PTSD in a very frank discussion about the condition.
