Training employees remains one of the central tasks of cafe ownership and management. Rather than training from a central standard and source that has been thoughtfully crafted to onboard and develop the skills of the barista to meet specific standards, there is a temptation to want to lean on training by osmosis or by committee where the new hire is simply assigned a shift schedule and told they will learn from the other experienced employees. What you end up with is a lot of mixed messages, confusion, disengagement and inconsistencies. Today on Shift Break we will be talking about why training by committee, or by simply having the existing staff "show them the ropes" is a bad idea and what we should be doing instead. When you onboard baristas, the work is just beginning. Part of the privilege of leadership is to provide ongoing coaching and training to all staff. This creates the kind of quality and excellence we want customers to experience and the kind of ongoing education you give to staff will determine if they are well equipped to serve. Today on Shift Break we will be talking about the two kinds of ongoing training and education and why having the proper order and emphasis on each is critical. The search for a "superstar" barista seems to never die. It is a desire born from our tendency to attribute success and power to one person in-spite of the evidence around us that pretty obviously points to the opposite. But oh if we just hire a champion, a coffee person, a lightning rod of a personality, then all will be well! Today on Shift Break we will be talking about why this idea should die a quick and unceremonious death, and in its place we need to build a system of collective accountability to high standards that, unlike the weak and faltering light of the superstar, equips our whole team and allows us to actually shine. This was such a fascinating conversation. I had a chance to speak with the authors of the book "Necessary Death", Chris Gross and Preston Fassel. These guys take a truly unique approach to growth, resilience, healing and transformation. "Necessary Death" is a compelling and thought-provoking work. This book skillfully intertwines elements of psychological horror with deep philosophical inquiries. Set against a backdrop that blurs the lines between reality and the supernatural, "Necessary Death" explores the themes of mortality, fear, and the human psyche's resilience. The narrative follows a gripping journey that forces the characters, and consequently the readers, to confront the inevitabilities of life and death, posing profound questions about what it means to truly live and face one's deepest fears. With its rich character arcs and suspenseful plot, "Necessary Death" is a masterful contribution to the horror genre, offering a unique and introspective look at the existential dilemmas that haunt us all.In this thought-provoking episode, we delve into the depths of horror and self-discovery with Chris Gross and Preston Fassel, authors of "Necessary Death". Our conversation traverses the eerie and enlightening paths of horror films, exploring how they mirror our inner selves and aid in our mental health. We discuss the unique freedom of the horror genre, where the absence of limits allows for an exploration of boundless ideas. Drawing parallels to social cognitive theory, particularly Albert Bandura's work on overcoming phobias through vicarious experiences, we examine how horror films enable us to confront and process our fears safely. Our dialogue touches on the therapeutic aspect of horror, likening the genre to a journey of self-actualization. We explore how facing metaphorical monsters in films teaches us about resilience and overcoming life's challenges, reflecting on the hero's journey and the confrontation with our shadow selves. The episode further delves into the concepts of grace and grit as presented by Ken Wilber, and how horror films often mirror this duality. We highlight the transformative power of horror, where the audience, initially drawn in by the monster, stays to witness the hero's journey, often finding parallels to their own life challenges."Necessary Death" is discussed in the context of personal transformation and human coping skills, emphasizing how horror films can be a tool for self-discovery. We also explore the importance of mindfulness and balance between heart and mind, and the role of perception in shaping our understanding of horror narratives. The conversation shifts to the societal implications of the fusion of sex and violence in media, referencing the Joker as a commentary on mental wellness decline. We touch upon Charles Bukowski's profound insight into the pursuit of goals, and how horror sequels often demonstrate the impact of personal growth on others.Join us in this intriguing episode as we uncover the hidden lessons in horror films and how they can be a conduit for personal growth, healing, and understanding the complexities of the human psyche.Visit us at:www.theselfhelpantidote.com

Join Dave and Wayne for genre television show news, a glimpse into what the hosts are currently watching, and commentary and analysis of the Apple TV+ series Foundation. This week on the SciFi TV Rewatch podcast we discuss Serath's seemingly reckless behaviors with Demerzel and whether the Queen Dominion can coerce Dawn into fathering the future emperor. There's still some disagreement whether Hari Seldon is dead at Tellum's hands, but more importantly, Salvor's attempt to get off the island meets with disaster. In our What We're Watching segment, Wayne makes it through S2 of Succession but has more fun w/Lower Decks. Dave checks out the historical Netflix drama Transatlantic and S4 of Sex Education. In Listener Feedback, Cincinnati Joe finds many of the story lines difficult to accept. Alan in Minnesota doesn't understand how Dawn impregnating Serath really makes any difference. Alan in England gives round 1 to Demerzel, and Fred from the Netherlands points out fascinating details about footprints in the sand. We're joined by friend of the show, Travis Johnson, as we talk about Foundation, S2E07, "A Necessary Death." That title sure sounds dreary so it's hard to believe that it's attached to an episode that's just so compulsively watchable! This episode is so compulsively watchable that no fewer than three characters IN the show are themselves watching the show. And that's last week's episode! It's so compulsively watchable that next week's episode is rumored to consist of nothing but characters watching this week's episode! It's so compulsively watchable that one of our hosts has watched the episode so many times that he's lost count of just how many! Want to know who watched so many times? You'll have to listen to our episode (and then make an educated guess) to find out! And meanwhile the pile of bodies at Tellum Bonds's feet just... keeps... getting... larger... You want to hear about this episode! Travis and we want to tell you about this episode! You don't want to miss that and neither do we! Let's GO!

Foundation delivers another episode of great writing and jaw-dropping visuals. Hari's plans remain a mystery, Demerzel remains a cipher.
