This week's EYE ON NPI is super spacey - it's Wurth Elektronik SMD Spacers (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/w/wurth-electronics/smd-spacers) a variety of pick-and-place-able hardware components that solder directly to your PCB designs during in a standard SMT line, and speed up your assembly and simplify your mechanical design. The first thing you'll learn as an engineer is that not only do you need to worry about your schematic being correct, and the layout being manufacturable and optimal for signal and power integrity, but you also have to make sure it fits into whatever enclosure the mechanical engineer cooked up. Worse, sometimes that mechanical engineer is you! For example, a common design requirement is to have a front panel, and then you have to mount the PCB against it with standoffs or spacers (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spacers_and_standoffs) so that the buttons, knobs and switches are accessible but protected. We used this technique with the first Adafruit product x0xb0x (https://www.ladyada.net/make/x0xb0x/fab/finish/index.html) - in this case we used hex standoffs (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/filter/board-spacers-standoffs/582). These come in a vast array of configurations, lengths and threads. There's female-female, female/male and even unthreaded ones. By mixing and matching, plus adding machine screws and lock washers you can construct any sandwich of PCBs. Standoffs work great, but they add a lot of time to the assembly process: they have to be manually lined up with the PCB holes, they need lock washers to keep them from rotating in place, and they can fall into the enclosure during assembly or repair. Being metal that means shorting against all your nice PCBA components! That's why we're big fans of SMT solder-able standoffs. We've used them in our designs like the Adafruit Macropad (https://www.digikey.com/en/products/detail/adafruit-industries-llc/5128/14635377) and Memento (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5420) camera. We love that they come on pick and place reel, with pickup tabs, and solder nicely in place using a standard SMT processing method. They always have the same uniform height, same location, and will not twist when attaching the machine screws on the other side. The Wurth Elektronik SMD spacers (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/w/wurth-electronics/smd-spacers) are available in a huge variety of configurations. For the threaded type: lengths from 1mm to 15mm and M2, M2.5 or M3 thread. For unthreaded spacers, hole diameters of 2.25mm, 2.7mm or 3.3mm. They also have male-thread spacers (https://www.digikey.com/short/bchz92w0), and the REDCUBE WP-SMRA series (https://www.digikey.com/short/mbnzwrvz) right-angle spacers which are brilliant and should allow for full-sided enclosures without wrangling. He uses local anesthesia which he administers with a spinal needle. He adjusts the angulation and entry point using CT, then inserts the guide wire. When he has it positioned between two spinous processes, and when the wire abuts the facet, this is the end point of the guide wire. He then uses soft tissue dilators through a 5mm incision before placing a spacer over the spacer delivery system. He usually places 8-12mm spacers, occasionally using 14mm spacers. One of the main pitfalls that happens when placing spacers is oversizing. Dr. Manfrè believes that this is a more common phenomenon in open surgical decompression due to patient placement in the operating room. Patients are often placed prone with a pillow beneath their abdomen to flex the lumbar spine and aid in exposure and insertion of spacers. However, this causes measurements to be greater than they are in natural spine mechanics. Next, we discuss the historical idea that interspinous spacers induce an unnatural lumbar kyphosis. New research suggests this is not the case. In fact, spacers restore the natural alignment of the spine without inducing kyphosis. Additionally, in patients with stenosis at multiple levels, the addition of a spacer at the worst level improves the morphology of the entire spine. He usually only places one spacer for his patients, and rarely will place two. New unpublished research by Dr. Manfrè on upright MRI shows that spacers placed for patients with spinal stenosis cause expansion of the dural sac by up to 70% by the next day. Join us as we continue to wind our way through Robots and Empire, the final book in Asimov's Robot series, even if you count collections of short stories. In this episode, we discuss chapters 3 through 6. "The Crisis," "Another Descendent," "The Abandoned World," and "The Crew." In these chapters, the Great and Glorious Az establishes Robots and Empire as an important bridge between the Robot Stories, the Galactic Empire Novels, and the Foundation Saga; it's both a prelude and a coda. Elijah Baley isn't in this novel except in flashbacks, but his presence looms large. Daneel and Giskard try to deduce what Elijah's nemesis, Amadiro might try in the aftermath of Fastolfe's death. As they do, they're forced to ponder the Three Laws of Robotics, which seem to be impeding their efforts. Together, these discussions wrap up the Robot Stories. Meanwhile, these two robots are pondering Elijah's ability to predict, in broad brushstrokes, the future that has unfolded over the past two centuries, including an oncoming crisis. Giskard, in particular, is trying to deduce the "Laws of Humanics" that Elijah must have understood to see so clearly. In this, of course, we see the seeds of the Foundation. How do the Galactic Empire Novels figure into all of this? For that, you'll have to stay tuned.

Dr. Gerardo Martinez is a pediatric dentist who practices out of Milford, Delaware. After spending time in California, Florida, and Texas, Dr. Martinez decided to start a practice in rural Delaware. We discuss a whole range of topics on this podcast, including the differences in patient populations he has treated throughout the country. He believes the future of pediatric dentistry is bright, and he discusses how much need still exists in the more remote areas like Delaware. Dr. Martinez has a unique practice philosophy. We talk about how he is okay with tougher/crying appointments and being aggressive with extractions while at the same time using SDF, Hall crowns, and glass ionomer products to manage decay. I had heard that Dr. Martinez invested in and uses a scanner to take digital impressions for his space maintenance. I hate fitting bands and taking impressions, so we took a dive into the costs and benefits of purchasing and using an intra-oral scanner in a pediatric office. It definitely changed my perspective and is likely something I will purchase in the near future.

Car gets hot in a matter of a few laps. Like 220 in 6 laps from 140. Plugs look good. Sport mod open motor. 36 degrees of timing. 77 jets on a 4412 2 barrel(same as last year with no issues). Jones pulley setup. 5.875" water pump pulley. 5.5" crank pulley. Was running jones 3 blade fan. Switched to racefan 4 blade after first night. Radiator is brand new. Running restrictions in place of thermostat. What else should I check? I just bought a 14 race old 602 it has button seals. Valve springs supposed to be 3 races old. Ran in a modified. Going to run in latemodel. What are some things I need to check before I crank it? Tell me a little more about the 602 carb on the restrictor where to get and size?
