Dr Neil Bell is a bryologist at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh. Much of his research is focused on quantifying, understanding and promoting Scotland's globally important bryophyte flora, of which mosses are part (along with liverworts and hornworts). This year is a big year for the bryophyte world: the British Bryology Society celebrates its centenary and in tandem Neil has published his book, The Hidden World of Mosses (published by RGB Edinburgh) which, with the help of exquisite photography, he hopes will open people's eyes and minds to the topic:"People see moss as a substance, as almost as a sort of amorphous green stuff, which is growing on top of the wall, they tend to have a negative approach to it. Because they're not seeing the difference between the individual plants, they're not seeing how interesting and actually how beautiful they are."A biologist and taxonomist, Neil is also editor-in-chief of the Journal of Bryology and in this podcast he relates exactly why he finds bryophytes so fascinating, including the role they play in peat creation and carbon capture:"Certain bryophyte-rich ecosystems represent massive carbon sinks."[Peat] is basically undecomposed organic matter. It's undecomposed moss. And on the top layer... is a layer of living sphagnum moss. Sphagnum species are adapted to maintain this habitat in this particular state and prevent decomposition of the peat underneath which would lead to the release of this carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. It creates a sort of wet blanket over the soil. It also keeps it very acidic, which prevents decomposition."About 20% of the carbon stored on land in natural habitats is actually in the form of peat, so it's really quite a huge amount. So it's really important that we maintain peatland ecosystems."He outlines the role mossy habitats can play in flooding mitigation:"All these bryophytes, when it rains, are very quickly ...absorbing a lot of this water and keeping it in their tissues, and then over then a space of days gradually releasing again into the rivers. It just basically means that the flow of water through that habitat is slowed down and buffered and thus flooding is less likely than it would be otherwise." Neil has a particular fascination for the habitats in Scotland - including a richly biodiverse temperate rain forest - which hosts extremely rare, even unique species. And there is much much more to discover:"Once you discover that diversity is there, and it's not something you ever heard about before, it's sort of like another world opens up, a veil is taken away from what was previously a completely hidden area of biodiversity." This week, my guest is Dr Neil Bell, bryologist at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh and author of The Hidden World of Mosses, which takes a look into the minute and fascinating world of bryophytes.  If you've ever wanted to know how these plants live and reproduce, whether you can cultivate moss indoors or outdoors, what that green stuff is you find on the surface of potted plant's compost and whether you should take it off, the environmental and habitat value of mosses and how they are affected by the moon, listen on… Dr Ian Bedford's Bug of the Week: Tardegrades What We Talk About  What is moss? How is it different to other plants?  Liverworts and hornworts How mosses reproduce Moss species in the UK Cultivating mosses in a garden or as a houseplant Liverworts growing on the surface of potted plants Is there a place for mosses on brownfield sites? Do all mosses need shade and moisture?  How mosses take in nutrients and attach to structures The role mosses play in the environment in terms of water attenuation and conservation, and as habitats for other creatures Sphagnum bogs as a ‘potential positive feedback loop' for climate change and what can be done about this The connection between sphagnum moss and the moon How you can better see mosses, to explore what they look like in detail and appreciate them About The Hidden World of Mosses Did you know that there are nearly 20,000 different species of mosses and their relatives worldwide with over 1000 in the UK? And did you know that Sphagnum moss is almost wholly responsible for the creation and maintenance of peat bogs, preventing harmful carbon from being released into the atmosphere? The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh has published The Hidden World of Mosses, providing an accessible guide to these not-so-humble botanical gems. Written by bryologist Dr Neil Bell, the book presents information about these incredible plants, exploring their tiny, intriguing and diverse environments in detail. This fascinating book also contains hundreds of stunning photographs which reveal the beauty and splendour of moss. Perhaps the most misunderstood and misrepresented of all groups of organisms, moss is often thought of as unattractive and unremarkable, but nothing could be further from the truth. Mosses and their relatives (liverworts and hornworts) are found in almost every part of the world, from lush forests to rocky mountains tops and from city centres in the tropics to Antarctic tundra. Mosses are critical to the planet - if they ceased to exist tomorrow the world would be in a lot of trouble.  Examining the many different types of moss, including those found in the UK and internationally, The Hidden World of Mosses explores the incredible environments of these plants that form their own miniature forests filled with grazers and predators, and have their own ecological norms and mechanics. They play a critical role in climate change prevention and have an extraordinary ability to hold and control water in forests, uplands and valleys.  Incredibly, some mosses can hold more than 20 times their own weight in water. Peat mosses (Sphagnum) are almost entirely responsible for creating and maintaining peat, which is a traditional fuel and used for the flavour it imparts to many whiskies. Sphagnum moss keeps the soil in which it grows permanently wet, largely preventing decomposition.Interestingly, Sphagnum moss has also been used by medics over the centuries. Due to its absorbent and antiseptic properties, it was used as a cheaper alternative to cotton wool dressings in World Wars One and Two, and has been used to treat wounds for many years.  On tropical mountains, mosses prevent flooding by capturing large amounts of water, gently controlling the flow of heavy rainfall, absorbing it like a giant sponge and then slowly letting it out again into rivers in a regulated manner. Additionally, mosses offer hunting grounds, protection and food for a host of much smaller creatures such as worms, mites, spiders and beetles, who use moss as a place to shelter, graze, or reproduce.  Speaking about the publication of The Hidden World of Mosses, Neil Bell said, “Mosses are just a little smaller than most things we deal with in our everyday lives, so we tend not to notice their intricate beauty and how different they are from each other unless we make the effort to look really closely. Mosses and their relatives have evolved to live in a different way from other plants, playing a critical role in the environment that other plants can't, and the mosses and liverworts we have in Scotland are of international significance - far more so than our other native plants, in fact. We need to recognise that and protect them. I hope that this book will raise awareness of this hidden botanical world and encourage more people to explore it .” Dr Neil Bell is a bryologist at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh.  Much of his research is focused on quantifying, understanding and promoting Scotland's globally important bryophyte flora, of which mosses are part.  Neil is also editor-in-chief of the Journal of Bryology.  This year, the British Bryology Society celebrates its centenary.  The Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is one of the world's leading scientific botanic gardens, holding knowledge gained over centuries that the world needs today.  All known life depends on plants and fungi. The Garden's mission is to explore, conserve and explain the world of plants for a better future. We all know biodiversity loss and climate change is threatening thousands of plants with extinction. Through cutting edge science, conservation and education, the organisation is helping to save them.  Its four Scottish gardens – Benmore, Dawyk, Logan and ‘The Botanics' in Edinburgh – attract over a million visitors every year. Together, these gardens comprise one of the richest plant collections on earth. As a registered Scottish charity, the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh is funded principally by the Scottish Government – but as an organisation, it is very much global, taking positive action for plants and people around the world – from local communities in Scotland, to over 40 countries overseas. Thomas Sadoski, Thomas Mazziotti and Face2face host David Peck talk about The Mimic, socio-paths, loss, the old school, mental health issues, rapid fire dialogue, and why you need to keep ringing the bell.TrailerFind out more about the film here.Synopsis:Based on a true story, this clever, intriguing, and hyperbolic comedy follows the main character - the Narrator (Thomas Sadoski) who is befriended by his young new neighbor 'the Kid’ (Jake Robinson), after he joins the local newspaper team. Obsessed with the idea that the Kid may be a sociopath, the Narrator goes to extreme lengths to uncover the truth about him and his wife, a woman he ultimately begins to fancy.Between long walks down the street, a twisted dinner date, and a car drive gone terribly wrong, the Narrator gets closer and closer to the truth about the Kid. But the truth, as he finds, is anything but what he expected. "Sociopaths have been portrayed as a shady bunch up until now. Inspired by true events, this confrontational comedy explores the uncharted territory of the lighter side of a sociopath,” says Mazziotti. “I applaud Gravitas Ventures introducing audiences to an alternate character dynamic which has yet to be portrayed under comedic scrutiny on screen, yet he lives among us all.”About Thomas and Thomas:Thomas Sadoski will next star in the upcoming CBS series Tommy, which stars Edie Falco as the first female chief of police for Los Angeles. Equal parts political, procedural, and family drama, Tommy comes from Paul Attanasio, the creator of Bull and Homicide: Life on the Street. On the big screen, he was most recently featured alongside Shirley MacLaine and Amanda Seyfried in The Last Word, directed by Mark Pellington, and reprised his role as Jimmy in John Wick: Chapter Two, starring Keanu Reeves. He will next star in the independent comedy The Mimic, which also stars Jake Robinson, Gina Gershon and Jessica Walter, and will soon begin production opposite Lucy Liu in the romance drama, The Last Weekend in May, for director Matthew Lillard.A veteran of the stage, Sadoski most recently starred in the Public Theater production of the new Suzan-Lori Parks play, White Noise, directed by Oskar Eustis with Daveed Diggs. Over the course of his stage career, he has starred in and earned raves for his performances in a wide variety of Broadway and off-Broadway productions. His most recent New York stage appearance was opposite Amanda Seyfried in the off-Broadway production of Neil LaBute’s The Way We Get By. His previous collaboration with LaBute on reasons to be pretty earned Sadoski a nomination for a Tony Award in the Leading Actor Category, as well as Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle and Drama League Award nominations. Sadoski’s other Broadway credits include Other Desert Cities for which he won an Obie Award, The House of Blue Leaves with Ben Stiller and Edie Falco, and Reckless, his Broadway debut opposite Mary-Louise Parker.Off-Broadway credits include Sam Mendes’s Bridge Project productions of As You Like It and The Tempest, Becky Shaw for which he won a Lucille Lortel Award, This is Our Youth with Mark Ruffalo, the world premiere of Elizabeth Merriweather’s The Mistakes Madeline Made, Gemini, Stay, Where We’re Born, Jump/Cut, All This Intimacy, and The General From America.Sadoski’s film credits include the critically-acclaimed film I Smile Back with Sarah Silverman and Josh Charles, the award-winning John Marc Vallee film Wild with Reese Witherspoon and Laura Dern, John Wick with Keanu Reeves, Take Care with Leslie Bibb, and many others. In addition to his role as Don Keefer on HBO’s Golden Globe-nominated Aaron Sorkin series The Newsroom and the hit CBS comedy Life in Pieces, his television credits include the NBC mini-series, The Slap, a recurring role on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and guest starring roles on and Ugly Betty, Law & Order: Criminal Intent. Sadoski resides in Los Angeles.Thomas Mazziotti started in television production at WPIX in New York before graduating both from college and into filmmaking at the same time. He attended the International Film and Television Workshops in Maine, as well as, Laguna Beach, CA.His first effort, The Beep, a 20-minute short film about a killer answering machine received theatrical distribution in N.Y. and L.A. due to a Fast Track article in New York magazine. This attention enabled him to option a play by Neil Bell performed at Playwrights Horizons in N.Y. and bring Sidney Lumet's producer on board to oversee the project. Undertow opened theatrically in N.Y. and garnished much attention due to its controversial subject matter of a young policeman entrapping a gay congressman on videotape. It stars Peter Dobson from Last Exit to Brooklyn.Tom then turned his attention to comedy and optioned a Canadian short story by Peter Sellers. Charlie Hoboken opened theatrically in N.Y. and stars Jennifer Esposito, Amanda Peet, Austin Pendleton, and Tovah Feldshuh. It tells the story of a fast-talking insurance salesman that makes ends meet by being a part-time hit man. The Mimic is Tom's third feature and first original screenplay. Based on a recent true story that happened to him, it reunited him with Austin Pendleton after 20 years. The stylized vision and rapid-fire dialogue enabled him to attract an all-star cast with strong theatrical backgrounds making it possible to shoot fourteen pages of dialogue in one day.Image Copyright and Credit: Thomas Mazziotti and Circus Road Films.F2F Music and Image Copyright: David Peck and Face2Face. New South Outdoor's Neil Bell had quite a bit to say about selling out of home on yesterday's Billboard Insider podcast.  Here's a selection of his comments. Neil Bell, Owner, New South Outdoor How to sell billboard advertising. One thing we always have to remember in this business is our success is tied to our customer's success.  If the campaign doesn't work they're not going to renew…We have to do everything we can to help market their business…One thing I learned early on in pitching customers was that ideas and art sell…Hey, what if we run a promotion for this…Copy will help sell things…It's a visual medium that we're working with…It we can come in there with an idea on paper – look at how your business is going to be seen in the community – that to me is always sold… But don't you need to ask good questions first to come up with good creative? Tommy Teepel was very influential to me and the training at Lamar…How can we pitch stuff without knowing all about a business?…You have to peel the onion and ask all those questions… What motivates this customer? What are they trying to accomplish? What are their competitors doing? What other promotions have they done that worked or didn't work? Ask all these things so that you can do in their and propose something that fits their needs… What is the out of home sale you're the proudest of? There's a bunch of them.  One in particular – I had a check cashing place.  This is one of the first people I ever sold.  When I got in the business I was 22…I hadn't every seen a customer have success with it.  I called on this check cashing place for two months.  Every two weeks I'd go in there…finally he decided to do a little poster showing with me.  I came in 2 or 3 weeks after the posters went up and he wanted to buy another 1 or 2.  He said, “I'm having all this success.”  After that I was able to sell outdoor so much better because I had seen results…Another that I can think of since digital has been out…I'd never had real estate on any of my boards.  I was able to go to a broker and say, look you've got all these listings, we can change these things on a regular basis…the realtor said we didn't sell that many more houses, but we picked up so many more listings.  The reason was when a homeowner sees a realtor is going outside the box to sell their house on a busy road on a billboard they say I want that realtor to represent me…I've had a lot more success with realtors. Today's podcast guest Neil Bell worked for Lamar and Watchfire before founding New South Outdoor, an independent out of home company in Alabama.  He talks about finding sites, selling ads and the leading software tool which boosts his company's profitability. Some highlights Neil Bell, Owner, New South Outdoor What have you learned about securing new locations in 19 years in the out of home business? I love it…It's like a puzzle, right, cause there's state and local rules and height restrictions and what I've found is that restraints make you become more creative…I've learned that creativity is a big part of leasing…Another thing I've learned – I don't really care to buy leases from folks that are just out there leasing.  I'll tell you a story.  One of the first one's I bought.  I bought the lease.  The sign crane showed up to put the sign up.  And the landowner says, “Hey, great to meet you, when are you guys going to build my fence?  The guy who leased me the property said you were going to build me a fence with the sign.”…New site locations, finding and leasing and building is the best part of this business for me. Talk about your Tiger Tail billboard in Auburn Alabama.  A great way to harness loyalty to a local university to build your out of home company. This is another one of those where we had to get creative.  We had to get creative.  There were a bunch of trees.  I wanted to build a 14 by 48 there, but half the sign would have been covered up.  And so the idea was let's build it vertical…It just looked kind of plain.  This was on the main stretch going into Auburn University.  A college street.  I'm an Auburn grad…so we came up with a backlit can of a tiger tail running up the bottom of the LED and coming out of the top.  And it lights up at night.  And it looked great.  I'd like to do more embellishment type things for these landmark displays.   How have you used cloud-based software to run your business? Quickbooks has been a big one for us.  One thing I can say that's been probably more impactful than I expected has been e-sign…Especially with digital boards…as soon as the contract is signed we're ready to go up…In the past we'd email it to them and they've got to print it out and we've got to go by there and get them signed.  So you lose a day or two.  It just seems like it happens that way.  And the e-sign, we're able to send it and they approve it and get them up that day…We use google docs a good bit…For content we use the manufacturers software...all my boards right now..are Watchfire. As far as the inventory and contracting software we use there's a little company called Signdash that has just rolled out some great software that we're really happy with.  It does a lot of what these other inventory software managers do.  It doesn't necessarily have all the bells and whistles that you find with the other companies that are out there but what I find is that we don't really need all that.  I know that my sales people like it.  They can see what's available.  They can see what's been proposed.  Once they get to yes they can send out an e-sign for a contract and it comes back pretty quick.   Please enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Never miss a Billboard Insider article.
