Zehn Jahre nichts verdient! Earlier this summer host Phil Berman sat down with Carolina Ledl, Lenzing's head of product and application management, to discuss the company's ambitious plans to start producing its Ecovero-branded viscose in its manufacturing plant in Indonesia. Lenzing first launched its ‘EcoVero' branded viscose in 2017, in response to growing a demand for more transparent viscose fibres. And with the expansion of its dope-dyed ‘Black' version now imminent, Carolina explains what the company's €100m expansion plans in South Asia will mean for sourcing both raw materials and reducing energy consumption in this regional manufacturing facility. She also talks about why the Indonesian plant will shortly start producing ‘Ecovero Black' and reveals how it uses less water, electricity, and heat than other conventional viscose dyeing processes. My guest this week is Katie Lopes, Founder, Creative & Sustainability Director of Stripe and Stare, a B-corp certified brand making super cool and comfy knickers. Made sustainably in Austria from Beechwood Trees by a company called Lenzing, the Stripe & Stare fabric TENCEL is scientifically proven to be 3 times softer than cotton, wears better & is as breathable as fresh air in a forest of responsibly planted trees. But she didn't start out saying, right ‘I'm going to save the planet with compostable knickers' and hey presto she was doing her thing. No. Sustainability is a journey and we are always working to be the best we can. Katie and her team were happy that the main body of their knicker was comfy and compostable but there was still the issue of using elastic. Which you obviously need or they will be down around your knees. Their knickers are described by magazines such as The Times and 98% of their customers as the most comfortable they have worn. But Katie wanted to go the extra mile. And so they are currently aiming to bring biodegradable elastanes into their entire range. They want to get their knickers onto the bottoms of millions of women. And they want to do it sustainably. Thanks so much Katie for giving us great pants that when we have enjoyed them, they can be composted down and regenerate the soil for new things to grow. Thanks also for showing us how we can take part in the circular economy by buying well and bringing a regenerative approach into our lives. You can find Katie's brand www.stripeandstare.com and follow her on Linkedin @KatieLopesJoin Lou on LinkedinFollow her @brave_newgirl on Instagram and get her books Brave New Girl- How to be Fearless, FEAR LESS and her Internationally Bestselling book DARE TO SHARE on Amazon or Waterstones or Barnes & Noble. Host Phil Berman sits down with Eva McGeorge, Lenzing's Head of Marketing and Communications, to discuss the company's recent global survey on consumer attitudes to sustainability in fashion. Lenzing says the aim of its new survey – the key insights of which will be launched exclusively in next month's edition of Ecotextile News – was to find out what drives and motivates consumers when it comes to shopping for textiles and clothing. Is it price? Sustainability? Or something else entirely? In the podcast Eva highlights how some nationalities are more likely to keep their clothes for longer, and shop less frequently, than others. And she also discusses four key drivers that can affect a consumer's motivation to act in a more sustainable way. This BLUE CAST Episode, Tuncay Kilickan talks with Industry Pioneer Nicolas ProphteThey catch up on highlights from Nicolas Prophte career - and talk about where the denim Industry is heading in 2023 and beyond - Nicolas Prophte, As head of PVH's denim center, drives innovation across the fashion house's brands, including Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein. In March 2022, under Prophte's oversight, Tommy Jeans debuted its first collection that follows Ellen MacArthur's Jeans Redesign guidelines, made with 100 percent organic cotton fabric. To date, Tommy Hilfiger has trained more than 80 percent of its designers on circular design principles and launched Tommy for Life, its first circular business model. Under the Tommy for Life program, the company takes back items from customers and partners, and cleans, repairs and resells them, keeping products in use longer. In the face of false information, Prophte said PVH needed to “be cautious and very careful that everything we claim has to be bulletproof.” He has taken stands against both greenwashing, which encompasses false claims about sustainability made to the public, as well as bluewashing, where mills entice brands with sustainability claims that it can't back up.Prophte is hoping to extend the sustainability conversation across brands. In July, PVH's European division signed the Dutch Denim Deal, an industry collaboration initiative for sustainable denim launched by the Dutch government. Within the deal, the signatories will work collectively to foster supply and use of high-grade recycled cotton fibers in denim. The main targets are to produce collectively a total of 3 million pieces containing a minimum of 20 percent post-consumer recycled cotton by the end of 2023. Do apparel manufacturers have mapped pathways for achieving their decarbonization targets, or not? This episode features responses to this question from three different manufacturers: Mustafa Ahmad the General Manager of Sustainability for US Apparel & Textiles in Pakistan, Krishna Manda the Vice President of Corporate Sustainability for Lenzing, and Matthew Guenther, the Director of Environmental Sustainability for TAL Apparel.
In today's edition host, Philip Berman, talks to Dr. Krishna Manda, Vice President of Corporate Sustainability at the Lenzing Group, and Roberta Vernocchi, a Senior Materials Manager at Timberland Apparel, about launching a new traceable apparel collection using Lenzing's Tencel Refibra technology. Manda and Vernocchi talk listeners through the new Timberland Fall 2022 collection that uses Tencel Refibra fabrics derived from a combination of sustainably sourced wood pulp and recycled cotton. “As a brand Timberland has this vision for a greener future, which means we look for new materials and innovation to reduce our environmental impact,” said Vernocchi, “Our outdoor customers are not just looking for a new aesthetic but have the environment in mind … and we need to differentiate and add some value to our core outdoor products other than just using cotton.” The US outdoor brand also talks about how it overcame some key sourcing challenges and Manda explains to listeners why Refibra was developed in the first place and how it can contribute to circularity.
