Pendleton delivers a stirring reading of Hamlet's monologue from Act 2 Scene 2 — “O, what a rogue and peasant slave am I!” — setting the stage for a lively exchange. Together, they delve into their differing perspectives on interpreting the Bard's works, sparring playfully over the challenges and joys of bringing Shakespeare to life. *Guest opinions are their own and do not reflect the views of Red Bull Theater.

We had a surreal conversation with the legendary Austin Pendleton. Austin's credits would never fit in a caption. He's been in over 250 movies and worked with Tennessee Williams, Arthur Miller, and Elia Kazan. His recent Broadway credits include acting in Choir Boy in 2016 and The Minutes in 2022, and directing Between Riverside and Crazy, also in 2022. We talked Williamstown, receiving reviews bad enough to make you quit acting, mic dropping acting advice, and stories from the short lived Lincoln Center Repertory Theater (headed by Elia Kazan). Oh. Austin saw Adult Film's production of the Seagull, and Ryan offers him a role in AF's production of The Cherry Orchard.
Jeanne Simpson moved to New York after graduating. She started doing day jobs in New York City to make ends meet while attending free dance classes, which allowed her to continue her training without having to pay for grad school. She eventually joined the American Isadora Dance Company, a modern company. Beginning a Career in the Performing Arts Jeanne began her acting career at HB Studios, where she was given a scholarship and studied under Austin Pendleton, a talented teacher who taught the advanced Acting Program at HB. She worked with other amazing actors and learned to choreograph scenes with them. This experience led her to work on original college shows and she choreographed for various shows. In addition to acting, she also taught at a dance studio in Park Slope, Brooklyn, before being offered her first professional choreography job where she choreographed a birthday cake song for a series on Nickelodeon and was subsequently hired for the series. This was her first professional choreography job which led to several others on films. A Volunteer in Performing Arts Programs Jeanne started volunteering at the 52nd Street Project in New York, which takes kids from Hell's Kitchen and lets them experience the transformative power of theater. They take them out of town to enjoy nature and rehearse plays with the kids, then perform the plays in Hell's Kitchen. This experience continues to inspire her belief that the performing arts can change lives, even if it doesn't lead to acting or dance. Jeanne has continued to work with the 52nd Street Project. Her experiences in the performing arts have had a profound impact on her life and she continues to inspire others to pursue their passions in the performing arts. Working in Television and Film She worked on a show called Wishbone, which was shooting in Texas. After leaving Wishbone, she returned to New York where she ended up doing more choreography jobs, and acting jobs, and getting married. She and her husband moved from New York to Los Angeles and Jeanne jobs teaching dance and theater, and worked for Princeton Review and IV West. She auditioned for Tim Robbins Actors Gang, a theater company, she worked there and eventually choreographed for the Grand Guignol company. Then she started auditioning for television and found an agent with Avalon Artists Group. Jeanne earned parts on several TV shows, including Madman, Parks and Rec, and How to Get Away with Murder. The couple moved to Valley Village, where they still live today, and they had a second child, Vivian. Arts Programs and Community Theater She started working with a community arts theater, an all-inclusive arts program that offers various classes and activities for children. She started a camp called Make Them Laugh classic comedy camp with her husband and another comedy writer, introducing classic comedy to a new generation of kids. She later taught at Berklee School, where she teaches improv and has directed at Harvard. She also teaches a dance class at Evolution Dance Studios called Big Shots. She is currently directing a production of Anything Gos with four or five and six-year-olds, and she has also choreographed a rock opera movie musical called The Promise. While she still auditions, Jeanne also tutors kids on their essays to get into schools, which has become an accidental side business. Their house is like Grand Central Station, filled with people of all ages, which they love. The journey has been a rollercoaster ride, but she is grateful for the opportunities it brings. Pursuing Acting and Choreography Jeanne discusses her experiences as an in-school ambassador for the National Young Arts Foundation and how she started dancing at age five and how her mother helped and inspired her. She talks about the different modes of acting, acting, dancing, teaching, and choreography. Acting and choreography are the two that bring the most happiness, as they allow them to be present and happy. Directing drives her insane, but as an actor and choreographer, she can let go and be present. Choreography is also fun because it allows her to share her vision with others, and learn from others, creating a collaborative experience. A Choreographer's Process As a choreographer, Jeanne starts with the story, which is essential for their dances to convey something and then, of course, the music. She also considers the style of dance, the capabilities of her dancers, and their potential. She then develops steps that grow out of this story, making it easier to remember. Jeanne shares the example of her Saturday morning class routine. Jeanne also discusses her process and how choreographers keep their thoughts straight in their heads. She uses choreographers notation, which is mainly used as a step notation, but she also writes down the story when she does a piece. The Importance of Relationships in the Performing Arts Jeanne shares her experiences with relationships in the performing arts industry, highlighting the importance of connections and connections in her life. She shares stories of various projects and connections, such as working on a Broadway musical project called Three, where she was hired to choreograph one of the shows and supervise all others. This experience led to her becoming part of a larger community of artists, which eventually led to other jobs or volunteer opportunities. She also mentions her involvement in a community theater that taught children at a public elementary school, where she taught and was recommended by a vocal coach for her kids. Influential Harvard Professors and Courses Jeanne credits James Davis, her sociology professor, for her interest in studying people and trends. Davis was supportive and kind, attending every play and dance concert she performed. She also mentions Arthur Holmberg and Jian Guo, who was a mentor, where she learned about professional theater companies. She also mentions Jane Nichols, an adjunct professor and acting teacher who Jeanne is still in touch with. Waka waka! Steve Martin Month continues as this week we welcome Jackson McDonald (Roxy Fever, History Lesson: Part II) back to the program to discuss a pair of movies that are actually good, as we get movin' right along into 1979's The Muppet Movie, directed by James Frawley, and starring Jim Henson, Frank Oz, Jerry Nelson, Charles Durning, Austin Pendleton, and a long list of cameo appearances including Edgar Bergen, Mel Brooks and of course, Steve Martin. While it's not officially the movie of the week, we also spend a great deal of time talking about 1981's The Great Muppet Caper, which sees last week's standout star Charles Grodin give an all-timer performance opposite Ms. Piggy. Two delightful films that make for a lively discussion on the unsolvable puzzles of Henson's puppetry. We've also got Theatre Reports on Oppenheimer and Last Voyage of the Demeter, and continue to shake our heads in disbelief that Prey never got a run in theaters, while J Mo, Hayley and Jackson are all fixated on music in the dog days of summer. If you'd like to watch The Muppet Movie or The Great Muppet Caper before listening along, they are both available for streaming on Disney+ and come strongly recommended. We'll be back next week to wrap up Steve Martin Month with 1999's Bowfinger, directed by Muppet maven Frank Oz, and ponder whether it is worthy to be inducted into the ADHD-DVD podcast canon. See you then!
The Equalizer Season 4 Episode 8: The Sins of Our Fathers Aired on CBS: January 18, 1989 Directed by: Paul Krasny Written by : Tom Towler Featuring: J. Smith-Cameron, Al Shannon, Yvonne Wilder, Austin Pendleton, Joe Morton, Michael Sergio A mobster's son is kidnapped; EQ helps his wife extricate her son from the inevitability of a life in the mafia. On the whole this is a rather thin episode considering a) recent heavy-hitting and very special episodes b) it's hard not to compare this plot of mafia domestic issues with The Sopranos which got just a tad more intricate and nuanced. That said our podcast coverage of this episode has got poetry, it's got Bible verses, it's contemplative. Making the episode has made our outlook on life that much more optimistic and informed, as we are sure it will for our listeners listening to it. Where this inspiration comes from, whether it's from The Equalizer, from our own lives, a combination or the collaboration - who knows, but there's probably some sonnet out there for that. @equalizerspod equalizerspodcast at gmail dot com https://www.facebook.com/equalizerspodcast/

Returning to the role that he originated back in 2014, Stephen played Pops, a retired police officer and devoted widowed father, who is doing his best to hold on to his beloved and massive rent-controlled Riverside Drive apartment. A deranged cat lady and a living war machine hide out from a robotics lab in a food truck. The robot has an existential crisis about its own mortality and the woman goes from thinking it's an alien, to a jerk, to maybe a romantic interest? In fact, multiple people in this movie reference the robot in a sexual way, including its maker and even the local news. Come listen as Tara and I revisit one of our childhood favorites!
In episode 055, we are joined by none other than Austin Pendleton. Austin is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the wide world of acting. Having trained with him myself, I was excited to share his perspective on the show. We talk about what initially fueled his excitement about acting, some of the strongest skills that successful actors have, and what were some of the biggest takeaways that Austin learned from his acting teachers.Austin Pendleton is a playwright, actor, director, teacher, and a Steppenwolf ensemble member since 1987. He received critical acclaim in 1964 for his performance as Motel in the original Broadway cast of “Fiddler on the Roof.” He appeared in “The Last Sweet Days of Isaac” (for which he won the Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance and an Obie Award), “The Diary of Anne Frank,” “Goodtime Charley,” and “Up from Paradise” as well as many other plays. In August 2006, Pendleton played the Chaplain in Bertolt Brecht's “Mother Courage and Her Children” with Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline in the Public Theater production. As a director, Pendleton has worked extensively on and off-Broadway. His direction of Elizabeth Taylor and Maureen Stapleton in Lillian Hellman's “The Little Foxes” garnered him a Tony Award nomination. In 2007, Austin Pendleton received a Special Award for his contributions to American theater at the 52nd Annual Drama Desk Awards.Sign up for the Actorcast Newsletter at Actorcast.
Austin Pendleton might be best known for “My Cousin Vinny,” or “What's Up Doc?” but the 82 year old actor, director, playwright, and teacher is a one-man theater institution. It almost seems like there isn't a great play that he hasn't performed or directed, somewhere, in his 60+ years in the business, and he's not slowing down in the slightest. In this epic, 90 minute episode, what Meryl Streep said of Pendleton will ring true—“there's no line between the man and his work.” He talks about his latest performance, in the celebrated new Tracy Letts play “The Minutes,” then takes us back half-a-century to the the first production of “Fiddler On The Roof,” and tells a few incredible stories of working with the great Jerome Robbins. I ask him how teaching feeds his acting work. He shares some important lessons he's learned from his teachers (like Uta Hagen, Bobby Lewis, and Elia Kazan), legendary actors (like Jo Van Fleet and Kim Stanley), and disasters (like when a horrifically bad review kept him away from substantial roles for 7 years). He leaves us with a vow he made in 1958, which he still lives by, that just might be the secret to his longevity in this emotional roller-coaster of a profession. Plus much more! Sit back and let this great sage of the stage take you on a journey through the life of an actor in a deep, enduring love affair with the work. Follow Back To One on Instagram

First time you saw the movie? Plot:The story opens with the Muppets sitting down at a private screening to watch a movie, for not only a screen testing, but as a pastiche of how they all met. Kermit the Frog lives a simple life in a Florida swamp. One day, he plays his banjo and sings "Rainbow Connection", and is approached by Bernie, a talent agent who encourages Kermit to pursue a career in show business. Inspired by the idea of "making millions of people happy", Kermit sets off on a cross-country trip to Hollywood. Kermit meets Fozzie Bear, who is working as a hapless stand-up comedian, and Kermit invites Fozzie on his journey. The two set out in Fozzie's 1951 Studebaker, but are soon pursued by entrepreneur Doc Hopper and his assistant Max in an attempt by Hopper to convince Kermit to be the new spokesfrog of Hopper's struggling French-fried frog legs restaurant franchise. Horrified, Kermit kindly refuses and he and Fozzie drive away. Unwilling to accept Kermit's refusal, Hopper resorts to increasingly forceful means of persuasion. In an old church, Kermit and Fozzie meet the rock band Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem, and the band's manager Scooter, who help them disguise their car. Driving on, they meet and are joined by Gonzo and his girlfriend Camilla the Chicken, who are also interested in becoming movie stars. They trade in their failing vehicle at a used car lot, where they meet Sweetums. They invite Sweetums to come with them, but he runs away. The others drive away, only for Sweetums to emerge and reveal that he had only gone to pack his things. The group meets Miss Piggy at a county fair, and she immediately becomes love-stricken with Kermit. When Kermit and Miss Piggy meet for dinner that night, Hopper and Max sneak up on Miss Piggy and abduct her as bait to lure Kermit. When Kermit arrives at the designated location, mad scientist Professor Krassman tries to brainwash Kermit into performing in Hopper's advertisements, but Miss Piggy furiously knocks out Hopper's henchmen and causes Krassman to be brainwashed by his own device. However, immediately after the fight and saving Kermit, Miss Piggy receives a job offer and promptly abandons a devastated Kermit. Joined by Rowlf the Dog and reunited with Miss Piggy along the way, the Muppets continue their journey to Hollywood, but their car breaks down in the desert. Sitting at a campfire, the group sadly realizes that they will likely miss the audition the next day. Kermit wanders off, ashamed for bringing his friends on a fruitless journey, but some personal reflection restores his commitment. He returns to camp, where he discovers the Electric Mayhem have come to their rescue, having learned of their plight by reading ahead in the film's script. The Mayhem offer to drive the entire group the rest of the way in their bus. The group is warned by a reformed Max that Hopper has hired an assassin, Snake Walker, to kill Kermit. Kermit decides to face his aggressor and proposes a Western-style showdown in a nearby ghost town. There, they find inventor Dr. Bunsen Honeydew and his assistant Beaker. Kermit confronts Hopper with an appeal to Hopper's own hopes and dreams, but Hopper is unmoved and orders his henchmen to kill Kermit and his friends. They are saved when one of Dr. Honeydew's inventions, "insta-grow" pills, temporarily enlarges Mayhem drummer Animal, who frightens away Hopper and his henchmen for good. Once the Muppets reach the Hollywood studio, they finally meet studio executive Lew Lord, who signs the Muppets to a "standard 'rich and famous' contract". The first take in their attempt to perform the script goes awry when Gonzo crashes into the prop rainbow, and an explosion blows a hole in the roof of the studio. However, a real rainbow shines through the hole and onto the Muppets. Joined by other Muppet characters from The Muppet Show, Sesame Street, Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas, and The Land of Gorch, the Muppets all sing together.Sweetums then tears through the movie screen in the theater, ending the film and catching up with the rest of the crew as they congratulate each other on their performances. Top Five Trivia of the movie: Top 5 Trivia-When Animal accidentally eats Dr. Bunsen Honeydew's Insta-Grow pills, he memorably balloons through the roof. Jim Henson refused to use a normal puppet on a miniature set to accomplish this effect, so his crew had to construct a gigantic Animal head that measured sixty feet.-In a 2004 interview, John Landis revealed that he was the puppeteer for Grover during the final sequence, as Frank Oz was busy operating Miss Piggy. Landis also noted that Tim Burton was also amongst the many puppeteers in the finale.-According to Austin Pendleton, James Frawley was very unhappy directing the movie, and did not get along with The Muppet performers.-The song "I'm Going to Go Back There Someday" was one of Jim Henson's favorites, and Gonzo's performer, Dave Goelz performed it at Henson's memorial.-When the film was released, The Muppet Show (1976) was the world's most popular TV show at the time, with an estimated 235 million viewers in 102 countries. **TRIPLE LINDY AWARD** **REVIEW AND RATING** TOP 5Stephen:1 Breakfast club2 T23 Sandlot4 Back to the Future5 Mail order brides Chris:1. sandlots2. The Diad and Bedroth find themselves in a mixed-up situation in the 1997 legal comedy - as always, from the dual standpoints of casual moviegoer and legal expert. Charlie Tuttle (Jeff Daniels) has just been made partner in a successful law firm when his boss and future father-in-law sends him to Paradise Bluff, Nevada, to request a continuance in a mail fraud case involving a cousin-in-law, con artist Benny Gibbs (Rip Torn), who is likely to be found guilty. However, the timing of the trip conflicts with Charlie's bachelor party, which has been planned by his old friend and best man, actor Richard Rietti (Michael Richards). When Charlie arrives in Paradise Bluff, he is unexpectedly greeted by Richard, who is determined to show his friend a great time prior to his wedding. During the celebration, Charlie is knocked out in a bar fight. The next day — the day of the court appearance — Richard finds him in no shape to appear in court that day, so he impersonates Charlie. When the case unexpectedly goes to trial, the two must continue the charade, or they both will go to prison for perpetrating a fraud upon the court. The film co-stars Charlize Theron and Jessica Steen and features entertaining cameos by Austin Pendleton, Jennifer Coolidge, and Rip Torn. Will the film's reputation stand up to the hosts' scrutiny? Will it be found guilty of misrepresenting the legal profession? Join us at the bar and find out! New York city native Dave Rosenberg has drawn from a critical event of his youth into a fascinating motion picture, "The Reunion". Through a collection of symbolism, film lore and flashbacks, the film explores the lingering effects of schoolyard bullying on an adult young man torn between his anger issues, spiritual enlightenment and the peer pressure of his best friends. The beautiful cinematography of familiar New York city haunts is not the only compelling reason to purchase "The Reunion" on Amazon Prime. Cameos by comedian Jim Norton and Austin Pendleton (of "My Cousin Vinny" fame) enhance a young, inspired cast to produce a highly entertaining film with a message. Thank you Dave! Welcome to The B-Side, from The Film Stage. Here we talk about movie directors! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between. This is the third episode of what we are calling The Final Frame. Here we will dissect the final film of a great, well-respected filmmaker, wrapped in the context of said filmmaker's entire career. Our subject today: the recently departed Peter Bogdanovich. His final film: She's Funny That Way, starring Owen Wilson, Imogen Poots, Kathryn Hahn, Rhys Ifans, Jennifer Aniston, Will Forte, Austin Pendleton, George Morfogen, Richard Lewis, and Cybill Shepherd. But wait! That's only half-true! Before the half-hearted release of She's Funny That Way, there was another version of the film. Its title? Squirrels to the Nuts. This is the cut that Bogdanovich wanted the world to see. Until the studio made him change it. And our guest, James Kenney, is the man who saved Squirrels to the Nuts. He recounts the tale in a great piece on his wonderful website. We discuss Bogdanovich's entire filmography. How he broke in under the umbrella of Roger Corman; his impossible three-film run of The Last Picture Show, What's Up Doc?, and Paper Moon; the professional downfall that preceded a tragic personal downfall; his pseudo-comeback with Mask, quickly followed by a career making movies for TV. And then, after all of that, The Cat's Meow, a Tom Petty documentary, and this complicated final film. Kenney speaks eloquently about Bogdanovich's gentle aesthetic, and we marvel at Squirrels being his first self-generated work since They All Laughed. There's much time spent discussing the marked differences between the two versions, and not nearly enough time marveling at the performance Bogdanovich got out of Cher in Mask. The same goes for Kenney's defense of the much-maligned Illegally Yours! Be sure to give us a follow on Twitter and Facebook at @TFSBSide. Shapiro, will take the stage at Studio 54. Actor and director, Pendleton, joined us to talk about his career, the new work, and Ethel Merman.

Waites, Matthew Cowles, Austin Pendleton, Lisa Banes, Mark Boone Jr. Look, we know. It's another plotline with a woman getting assaulted. This season's got a lot of those. Or hey, the Equalizer's on a date! It's been a while! Good for him, he's found love and he's more in touch with himself.
