A change of gears into a bizarre-but-fun puzzle game that Nintendo decided to drop on its NES Online platform a few months ago. It's hard to really recommend it, but we try anyway. Oh, by the way, this game is Solomon's Key 2 (the prequel), but they didn't call it that in North America for reasons we don't entirely understand. Also, we talk about NFTs and establish that if you think you understand it but you're still confused, that actually means you understand it perfectly because it actually makes no sense and nobody can defend it. So naturally Electronic Arts will be investing in it. Obviously I’d love to use original hardware but that gets more and more difficult over time as it wears out and becomes harder to find. Adr0ck I wish I could say NSO, but the selection is so small So I think technically speaking it's the best method of playing for convenience purposes, but the library is just not there yet Andross I think original hardware is the way to go. But yeah, as that becomes more difficult to do my preference is to have a port of it on my latest system. My dream is that they release a "classic" mini version of each console. But one that has the ability to play old cartridges as well as has a virtual console of some sort so you can buy digitally as well. Third Strongest Mole (Sam) Personally I don't see the need for classic systems. I'd rather have everything play on one set of hardware. NSO seems like the best way to me but Nintendo seems complacent about their selection And this might be a hot take but I think all the individualized re releases are more of a curse than blessing. I think the reason so few games come to NSO is because rights holders would rather sit on their IP until they have a chance to re-sell old games. Not sure what the future of games currently on NSO could be but I assume anything that goes on there stays until they discontinue the service, which would likely be at least 5 years after the switch becomes obsolete. That's quite a time to commit your game to being on a service. JasonLee I do think NSO is the best option, if they’d only put more games on it, on a more frequent basis. I still have dreams of playing N64 games on it with the optional N64 controller sold by Nintendo. SpiderShan The problem I find with the NSO or even other modern solutions is that most licensed games will not return. Think of all the good remaining games people want on the NES Online. Most are licensed (Duck Tales, TMNT, Back to the Future...okay not that one but you get the point) and will almost certainly never get a chance to get put there. Same with the SNES games. That means I need to play using the original carts and hardware. ChrisHL94 I guess I will be the bad guy and bring up the dirty word emulation. (Throwback Thursday) Eric Plunk Growing up I loved the old black and white Popeye cartoons as well as the Robin Williams movie (my dad copied a rental VHS of Popeye so I watched it often). My affinity for the character combined with the fun arcade gameplay made Popeye on NES one of my most rented games. I even recently won $25 in store credit at the local game shop for getting the high score in it! Our two most friendly game makers and players celebrate hitting their flirty forties the only way they know how: talkin' about those precious little games they love so much! At the top of the show we rip into the latest in drifting technology in our new game, Getaway Grand Prix before ripping into our new segment, HEADLINE NEWS, in which we explore the peculiar events surrounding Cooking Mama: Cookstar and the rumored possibility for the for the return of the WiiU, and, thereby, Nintendo Land, with second-screen Switch support. We talk a short reprieve from gossip-gathering and rabble rousing as Kevyn rips into NES Online and goes wild for the simplistic and effective design of Excite Bike and Devil World while Jace gets poisoned by Resident Evil: Code Veronica and healed by Klonoa: Door to Phantomile (and Snack World). The boys tango with the deceptively difficult Game Club, ZX House Attack, and wrap things up answering a few questions about our biggest inspirations for our latest projects (Garfield Party not included). Never be afraid to take control and sieze the day with a rambunctious new episode of SKY PIRATE RADIO!

In a world where sports video games have become deep, complex, virtual simulations of their real-life counterparts, Ice Hockey still stands out. It's the epitome of the saying "Less is More". Sure, if you're looking for a hockey game where you can develop rosters, play 100+ hours of a franchise, and manage my salary cap, there are better options. But if you just want to play a quick game of hockey against a friend, and have a really good time doing it, it's still hard to beat Ice Hockey. It's not a very deep game. You play against either the computer or a friend in a single game, and that's it. No seasons or tournaments. You get to pick from one of six national teams, and then you make up your four man roster. You can pick between skinny players (fast but wimpy), medium players (meh), and heavy/fat players (slow but powerful), and you can mix and match to create any combination of four that you want. And within that lies the genius of Ice Hockey. Do you roll with a team of four skinny players, skate circles around your opponent, but get knocked off the puck every time somebody sneezes? Or do you load up on heavyweights and just hope the other team skates into one of your guys? It might not be as deep as navigating the AHL looking for a fourth line winger, but it works perfectly. The combinations are practically endless. I guess technically there's 256 combinations. But whatever. The gameplay is insanely simplistic and easy to pick up. Steer your highlighted player with the D-pad. "A" passes or steals, and "B" shoots or changes players. The D-pad controls your goalie at the same time, which is also really fun. I'd argue that controlling the goalie in Ice Hockey is as fun as controlling the goalie in any hockey game ever made. And that's it. Most of the basic rules from hockey are here, and you just try to score more goals than your opponent. There's no load times, no rosters updates, it's just simple, arcade hockey. And it's awesome. Most people compare Ice Hockey to it's NES counterpart Blades of Steel. I knew a ton of people that owned one, but I don't think I knew anybody that owned both. I preferred Blades of Steel as a kid, but I think Ice Hockey has held up infinitely better over the years. It recently released on the Nintendo Switch as part of their NES Online service, and I can confirm it's as fun to pick up and play today as it was over thirty years ago. It's not perfect; and it certainly isn't worth paying anymore than a few bucks for these days. But for my money, it's the Ric Flair of Nintendo sports games. One of the all-time greats, and I love it. My buddy David Rae does too. He's my guest this week, and we had a ton of laughs talking Ice Hockey. I hope you guys enjoy this one as much as we did!
