The VGST team is back after a month of no internet, technical difficulties and other things. But the video games just keep on coming. Hope is away, but James and Patrick are joined by the wonderful Ginny Woo (GameSpot, Screenrant, Fanbyte, DDNet) to chat Persona Q2, FFXIV Shadowbringers, F1 2019, Cadence of Hyrule, Super Mario Maker 2, Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes & Kerbal Space Program. We also touch on the G2A controversy, the Nintendo Switch Lite, Devotion not coming back to Steam and James gets mad at Prime Day. (Note: Sadly we had more slight issues with audio, so it gets a little choppy here and there. Hopefully we have that sorted moving forward.) Email us! VGST@videogamist.com
We’re back from our mini-vacation and #JRPGJuly is in full swing. Now playing includes praise for Persona Q2, FF14, and Atelier Lulua. We're also impressed with how everyone agrees in the feedback section. Now I must go find Chris and comfort him as he laments Marle.
The golden age of Spider-Man continues, with Far From Home, the latest MCU movie, arriving on the heels of Into the Spider-Verse, Insomniac's Spider-Man video game, and Spidey's recent appearances in the Avengers films – and the hits just keep on coming, because Far From Home is an absolute blast. It's a wildly entertaining, wonderfully funny film with a good heart and a lot of creativity, one that manages to both take Spider-Man to places he's never been before (geographically and thematically) while also doing an unexpectedly fantastic job with one of his most wonderfully bizarre villains, Mysterio. The film is a lot of fun to talk about, but before that, Sean gives first impressions on Judgment for PS4, Jonathan shares some thoughts on Persona Q2 for 3DS from his brother Thomas, and we go over the sadly hilarious saga of WB tripping on rakes trying to make a Flash movie for the better part of this decade. Arnaldo and Paul are on deck today talking about what video games they've been playing, but not before talking about the Toronto Raptors winning the NBA title, followed by some Canadian beat poetry by Arnaldo, because this is a video game show, right? It doesn't take long to get back on track with Paper Mario on the Gamecube (14:00), followed by Persona Q2 (33:00). Paul then mangles the pronounciation of Lapis X Labyrinth, but barely redeems himself before talking about 428 Shibuya Scramble (50:30). The guys then move on to E3 and what they think of games like The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, Cyberpunk 2077 and the Final Fantasy VII remake (1:16:00) and finish up the show talking about the era of mini videogame consoles with the announcement of the TurboGrafx-16 Mini (1:52:00).
Jared and Anne Ladyem (anneladyem.com) return to the 3DS for potentially its last big release with Persona Q2. Does combining the casts of P3, P4, P5, and P3P’s heroine make for a good game or are there too many cooks in this kitchen? Who is the true protagonist of this game? What surprised us the most? These questions and more found within this here podcast.

Yes, it’s another big week for Pokemon Sword and Shield, so we share our thoughts on everything we learned, from the Legendary Pokemon Zacian and Zamazenta, to new Pokemon like the adorable Wooloo. We’re most excited, however, by the promise of a free-roaming camera! After the Pokemon talk, we move onto June’s Nintendo Switch Online lineup, Persona Q2 and the 3DS, and talk about quitting games right before the final boss.
Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: We discuss... spoilers! No, we're not trying to keep the topic from you. We are talking about how spoiler culture exists today and how radically different people can be when it comes to their reaction to spoilers. In terms of when we were first introduced to the idea of spoilers and keeping things sacred, so to speak, differed for both of us. For Void, it was when Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was released. People would drive around at the book releases yelling what happened out of car windows and trying to ruin everyone else's fun. For Beej, it was the movie The Sixth Sense when people wouldn't even discuss the movie before asking, "wait, have you seen it yet?" because the twist was such a big deal. And then there's the idea of not watching trailers or partaking in reviews for fear of spoilers ruining the media for you, whether it's a movie or a book or a video game. While for others, those are the sneak peeks and sometimes extra content that makes the wait for the new thing more enjoyable and great. Plus, we can't not talk about cultural movements like Game of Thrones or Avengers: Endgame because of the ridiculous way that we all reacted to spoilers. Even Disney was putting out a spoiler embargo until the first two weekends were finished to give people a chance to see it if they were really into the franchise. But then there's GoT where people would spoil the events of the episode while the episode was still airing with the idea that if you weren't watching it when it was on, you didn't care enough not to be spoiled. Just the idea of spoiler culture in general is interesting to us, and we wanted to give it a deeper dive than would have been possible otherwise. It came up during our Avengers: Endgame spoilercast, but amazingly, we didn't have enough time to talk about spoilers while we were talking spoilers. So here we are. Let us know what your thoughts on spoilers are! Weekly Geekery For Geekery Beej got Persona Q2, which might be the swan song of the Nintendo 3DS. It might be the last major 3DS release, but it has all the style of P5 on the PS4. He also (finally) started listening to The Adventure Zone and had a ton of questions for Void about the show. He also watched Always be My Maybe and John Wick (both of which are awesome) and got back into FFXIV Stormblood. Speaking of Stormblood, Void wrapped up all the Stormblood patch content to prep for FFXIV Shadowbringers, and he talks about how well the politics and different storylines are brought together to lead into the new expansion. And in more Final Fantasy news, Void has started up another FF series playthrough, and he bounced off of 1-4 for various reasons. Not that they aren't good, but he thinks FFV is the place he will have the most enjoyment as he begins going back through the series chronologically. Support this Podcast in 3 Clicks! In This Episode: Beej is solo this week. Not for a lack of trying. Void's life got twist turned upside down, and the schedule for us to get back on schedule was pushed back. Then Beej's internet decided that it didn't want to stay connected for more than a few minutes at a time, making recording an episode with a guest impossible. Stupid thunderstorms making the power blink. Regardless, we've got an episode in your feed covering the talk of the geeks: last week's Nintendo Direct. Oodles of Cool Stuff from Nintendo The Nintendo Direct on February 13th was chock-full of content that shows 2019 as being potentially the best year yet for Nintendo's portable console. Between Yoshi's Crafted World (whose demo is amazeballs), Fire Emblem Three Houses (which looks to change up the formula the series has stuck with to this point), and The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening (it's so pretty!)...the Switch has a lot going for it. Captain Toad's Treasure Tracker is getting some DLC, which is neat. Because it's a Wii U game that was ported to the Switch. The interesting part is that the Wii U version isn't getting the DLC. So folks with that version miss out. It's an odd move for Nintendo, considering with games like Breath of the Wild, the DLC was the same for both platforms. Mario Maker 2 is coming out. Beej wants a Yoshi's Island palette. That's it and that's all. And that's not to mention that Nintendo didn't even mention the upcoming Pokemon Generation 8 game that's due at the end of this year. Oh, and we get Joker from Persona 5 in Super Smash Bros Ultimate for sure. That indicates we may be getting P5 Crimson on Switch sometime since he's not been on a Nintendo platform before -- except that he has. Persona 5 is the primary cast of the new 3DS title Persona Q2, and it's been out in Japan since December and is coming Stateside in June (or July?). So there's a small chance they're using that as an in, but who knows? Regardless, Joker in Smash is gonna be awesome. Third-Party Shenanigans SquareEnix brought their game: Final Fantasy VII is on its way, Final Fantasy IX dropped in HD on the eshop the day of the Direct, and Dragon Quest XI S got a spectacular presentation. SE showed that the much-anticipated 2d version of the game (previously only available on the Japanese 3DS version) is coming to Switch. This mode is reminiscent of the SNES DQ games, and Beej can't wait. He loves old-school RPGs. But you already know that. Dragon Quest Builders 2 is also on the docket, and even though it's a builder game, and Beej doesn't really do those, this one looks really neat and the co-op mode means that he might just like it because he can play with Dragon Quest Austin. And...AND...there's a new Chocobo's Mystery Dungeon game. Beej has no idea if it's a remake or a new one, but it looks cool and cute. So he's on board. Basically SE showed up. The problem is that the Square side of SquareEnix has been disappointing lately, so we'll see how things go from here. But the Enix stuff looks fantastic. So at least there's that. Nindie Delights Nintendo highlighted a lot of other games, too, that aren't just their spectacular first-party titles. We saw Deltarune, the follow-up to Undertale. We got a glimpse of Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and the badassery that is Captain Marvel and her binary form. Rune Factory 4 got a special edition, Rune Factory 5 got announced, and the buzz of excitement around both has Beej intrigued enough to give the games a shot. He has no idea if he'll like them, but everyone else does. So he can't wait. Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is coming out finally, and Beej couldn't be more excited. He missed the Kickstarter, but the full game is finally on its way, and he...is...stoked. It's gonna be awesome if last year's retro-inspired entry to the series was an indication. And then there's Astral Chain. It may be the highlight of the show behind Link's Awakening because it was just such a surprise. We had no idea it was coming (or at least Beej didn't), and the cyberpunk setting and the frenetic action and what looks like it could possibly be RPG gameplay...my oh my. We can't wait. That's the collective we. As in the internet. It's gonna be great. Or at least, it better be. So what's your take on the February Nintendo Direct?
