This is a wonderfully raw and real conversation with Nic Gregoriades. Nic is a men's coach, 4th Degree Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Black Belt, author and podcast host at The Nic Gregoriades Show. Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, during the turbulent collapse of apartheid, Nic recognized at a young age that there was more to life than promised by the backward, small ideas of his country's culture. In 2003 he moved to London to earn his black belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu, becoming the first person to be awarded the black belt by the legendary Roger Gracie. In late 2012 he took a trip to the amazon to drink the sacred plant medicine, Ayahuasca, which profoundly affected his world view and caused him to dras- tically change his life path. In the last few years, divorce and a sudden change in a long running business partnership, inspired Nic to move to the US to the next chapter of his life of spiritual adventure and deep introspective learning. His mission is to help men face their fears, embrace their power and lead lives of extraordinary fulfillment. Let's begin…. Born in South Africa Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, during the turbulent collapse of apartheid, Nic Gregoriades recognized at a young age that there was more to life than promised by the backward, small ideas of his country's culture. It was this which first sparked his hunger for wider knowledge and understanding, of people, places, viewpoints, modes of living, and himself. And since then, with decades of introspection, study, travel, and practice, and armed with the understanding that the human experience is a gift, Nic has consistently been able to fulfill his potential. He has dedicated himself and his life to discovering the secrets of a well-Iived life and then sharing them with men who seek to go beyond the frustration, boredom and powerlessness inherent in the modern world. In this episode: Story of Nic with martial arts Living up to your ideals Needing approval from women Just need to be right with me Pain is the indicator that something's wrong Dealing with emotions Jujitsu sometimes it's about resisting or yielding Men always try to solve the problems Accepting myself for who I was If you achieve, good things come to you You are not your thoughts Making meditation a habit Understanding who you are "I've been giving myself approval, but not total approval and acceptance" "Sometimes you have to be vulnerable, and sometimes you have to put the wall up" "As a man, you're always trying to solve problems in the world even when you don't realize it" About Nicolas: Nicolas Gregoriades was born on the 2nd of September, 1979 in Cape Town, South Africa. Martial arts were already instilled in the Gregoriades family hold as Nicolas' father was a karate black belt, so it didn't come as a surprise when “Nic” picked up on his training at the age of 7, through judo. Nicolas got up to brown belt in judo, but while going through the ranks his true intent was to pursue Brazilian jiu jitsu, a style he believed to be more effective as a self defense/fighting method. As BJJ was not available in Cape Town at the time, he chose to join a submission wrestling club, with Coach Ludwig Strydom, in 2000. Gi jiu jitsu became part of Gregoriades' life in 2004 when he joined Roger Gracie's academy in West London, England. Nicolas stayed with Roger throughout the belt system, reaching the degree of black belt on August 2008, becoming also Roger Gracie's first black belt. Since then Nic has launched his own BJJ endeavor, the Jiu Jitsu Brotherhood, a BJJ association with several affiliated academies spread out all over the world. “Yoga is a martial art you do against yourself”- Nic Gregoriades In this episode I have a great conversation with Abi Carver, founder of Yoga15.com. We have a great conversation about her life, what inspires her, and how she went from working as a magazine editor to chasing her charmed life moving abroad and creating Yoga15. Abi gives us insight on her teaching methodology and how she designed it for busy athletes who want to mitigate injury and improve importance. The Yoga 15 videos are 15-minute, at-home, non-spiritual workouts that focus on the benefits of yoga specifically for athletes. Practicing 15 minutes a day will maximize athletic performance, alleviate areas of recurring pain and increase longevity, allowing you to do more of the sport you love. In the end, so much of our lives, are our Relationships. So many of us want our relationships to complete us. We outsource the validation and acceptance we need to others. We want to have the full sacred connection to another special person who will never break our hearts and will never trigger our pain, never scratch our wounds. We want them to be emotionally available, open hearted, and share our dreams; That other person cannot exist, and you are not that person for someone else either. In this episode we cover the reasons, why, Relationships fail, and what is at bottom, always a failure to properly set and manage expectations. We discuss ideas such as Ideal Self,The Phases of a Relationship, the Neurochemistry of Romance, andOur Needs and Our Values. We also cover the upcoming The Relationship Formula™ course being run in collaboration with Nic Gregoriades of liberationmentor.com.We get the relationships that mirror our expectations, but we keep the relationships that mirror the work we have done on ourselves.info@eyeswideopenlife.org
