Today's guest is multidisciplinary artist JJJJJerome Ellis. Through music, text, performance, video, and photography he researches relationships among blackness, disabled speech, divinity, nature, sound, and time. He has a remarkable new solo piano album out this December on NNA Tapes called Compline in Nine Movements. Recorded in one take back in 2017, it's a longform improvisation on a theme Ellis developed with longtime collaborator James Harrison Monaco. Listen in to hear Ellis discuss the new album, disability rights, time and the value of public school music education as well as music from the album. Learn more about your ad choices. Co-hosted by Chris Kissel and Chuck Soo-Hoo, the twice-monthly dublab program Contact Wave enthusiastically celebrates the best experimental, avant-garde, psychedelic, and off-the-grid music crafted in L.A. and beyond. This episode features a conversation with ambient and New Age music pioneer Michael Stearns, who is also a multi-genre composer, sound designer, and soundtrack producer. His credits include music for television, feature films, planetariums, twenty-two IMAX films and seventeen solo albums. As one of the pioneers of American electronic music from his earliest self-released cassette in 1977 up through his 2021 Beyond Earth & Sky collaboration with Steve Roach, Stearns creates engaging textures melding with soaring melodies. He has created music for NASA, Laserium, Disney Films, HBO, 20/20 and the Berkshire Ballet. His award-winning scores for Ron Fricke's non-verbal global film masterpieces Chronos, Sacred Site, Baraka and Samsara have been heard by audiences around the world. Stearns creates at his The Guest House studio in Santa Fe, New Mexico. This year marks the rerelease of Stearns' groundbreaking and long out-of-print Planetary Unfolding (1981). Featuring the sound of the Serge Modular Synthesizer in 6 movements, the slowly evolving atmospheric swirls of this early spacemusic classic are a journey within inner and outer space. A few things I noticed from my year-end list - no berlin-school music, very little what I would call 'space' music, a fair amount of dusty, loop music like Maps & Diagrams or Tapes & Topographies, several guitar based albums like Dave Depper, Dave Nelson, SUSS, and Devendra Banhart, and lastly, a lot of modern classical/modern composition albums from Mastrokristo & Alapastel to Max Richter and Viktor Orri Árnason and Glåsbird. That collection of favorites is nothing new for me. I've been a big fan of that dusty, noisy, loop-based style for a long time & as modern composition has grown over the years, so has my interest. Although, I may need to dive back into spacey, droney ambient like the stuff in the stargazing mixes. I guess there's not much else to say for this post other than here is part 2 of my favorite ambient albums of 2021. Cheers! In this episode of the Indexical podcast, Jon Myers, Andrew C. Smith, and Madison Heying talk to composer Jack Callahan who operates under the moniker die Reihe. They discuss his piece Housed, which consists of various arrangements of sampled chords from house music. Jack talks about a composition by Michael Pisaro that he released though his imprint Báhn Mì Verlag. And lastly Jack talks about studying with Jürg Frey and his connection to Wandelweiser. Just like Callahan, the conversation maintains serious undertones even as it strays into the silly or ridiculous. The following pieces will be heard through the interview: "Housed (Side B)" from Housed by die Reihe, on NNA Tapes (https://nnatapes.bandcamp.com/album/housed) "Add Red(Grey Series No. 3)" from a split LP with Matthew Sullivan, on Báhn Mì Verlag (http://www.banhmiverlag.com/releases) "Les tréfonds inexplorés des signes 36-39 and 40-43" by Jurg Frey, performed by The Dream Team. From an Indexical concert curated by Jack Callahan, Jan. 26, 2013, at Willow Place Auditorium (https://www.indexical.org/events/2013-01-26-ii-1-jurg-frey-unhorbare-zeit)
“Released as a ‘bonus tape’, with 75 copies riding sidecar to the “Hysteria” LP on NNA Tapes, “Drainolith Presents: Moskos Reads The Zonal Poets Vol.1? is a spoken word cassette by Drainolith’s Alex Moskos (also known for Dan’l Boone, AIDS Wolf, etc). For this sucker curation was key. Moskos went strong into his crew to cull the richest wackadoo. An excerpt of deep-fried cultural criticism by Zac Davis for example. I remember hearing stories in the early 2000’s about a spring chicken’d Zac Davis masturbating into condoms in the back of tour vans, then eating them, and that wasn’t even the deep end for his mug. But it’s all probably only 80% true or so.” Find out more here: http://www.tabsout.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/draino-large.jpg
