One of the races on my bucket list is the Mountain Mist! This is a race that takes place up in Huntsville, Alabama at the Monte Sano State Park and the Huntsville Land Trust Trails. This year Mark Crain, Joao Vitor Novaes, and Jenny Early took on the course and give us a Floridian insight on this Alabama race! Mark has done races like the North Face Endurance Challenge, John Holmes 50k, Croom Zoom, the Iron Horse 100, Gate2Gate, and the Long Haul 100! Joao has gone from the IRONMAN to the hiking the Tahoe Rim Trail and Jenny Early has done races like the Yeti 100, the Tallahassee Ultra Distance Classic, and now the Mountain Mist. There is around 4,000' feet of climb. There is a vertical climb on the course that requires the use of your upper body going up the infamous Waterline Trail. The final 6 miles drops into and back out of McKay Hollow, very rugged trails.
On today's show, we have a very special treat in the form of the Trail & Ultra Running Husband and Wife team of Abby and Cordis Hall. Abby has been lighting up the ultra scene with multiple finishes over the years at races like the North Face Endurance Challenge, Leadville Trail 100, and of course Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc or UTMB - most recently with an impressive 3rd place podium finish. Cordis is no stranger to the ultra scene with impressive finishes at UTMB, TDS and most recently a 100K finish at Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival. We get into their origins as runners and husband and wife by biting off massive challenges together - sometimes failing, sometimes succeeding, but always loving and supporting one another. I recorded this way back in February and the episode sat on the shelf since then, but with the relaunch, I wanted to share the conversation with all of you. So, if you're ready for the show, crank it up and let's go! This was the inaugural year for the Last of the Felascans in Alachua, Florida. Andy Sholly was the Last Person Standing with a total of 26 yards for 26 hours running a total of 103.34 miles! Sholly is no stranger to this race format having won the 2022 Death at Depuis here in Florida and won the Last at the Lake in West Point Lake, Georgia. Matt Clapper took second place this year and his final lap was a legendary tale. Clapper recently placed 10th Overall at the Pinellas Trail Challenge. Andrew Barrett joins the chat, like Matt, he also took on the Pinellas Trail Challenge the week prior. Andrew, also known as A2, has raced all over the world and across the country from UTMB to the Vermont 100, Rocky Racoon, Western States 100, Tuschars, Never Summer, and the North Face Endurance Challenge. He's also signed up for the 2023 Cocodona 250! Last but not least, we've got Theresa Patton, she was your last woman remaining in the race! She completed 12 hours and 50 miles! Enjoy as we ramble on through stories of feet, puke, hydration methods, and how the hours went down. It's an amazing event as everyone is competing meanwhile encouraging each other.
TJ David is a professional skier and endurance athlete residing in Colorado. His experience has seen him mountaineering skiing in Chamonix, kayaking in Colorado and competing in several endurance challenges such as North Face Endurance Challenge and the Indian creek fifties. Listen on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and all other platforms; just search “Between The Mountains” or Ask Alexa! His skill and name has been slapped onto billboards, commercials and every major publication in the industry and he even finds time still to run his own company and maintain his clients. He has an incredibly humble and experienced view on things, and it’s my pleasure to have him on the show. An Evolution From Childhood To Profession TJ started skiing at a young age - 3 or 4 years old - in New Jersey. From that moment he has gone on to ski his whole life. Exposing himself to tough conditions as he grew older, his skill base grew from more local slopes, to now all over the world. After going to college on the East Coast, TJ took a trip and went to Utah. It was here, that he got his first sponsorship and work opportunities. From here, everything grew. Now, he ski's full time, is an endurance trail runner, and runs his own coaching business "Spending time outside... there are really strong links to an overall heightened state of being. The endorphins you get from being outside - the time spent out there - is really important for your mental health" Balancing Capturing The Content And Living The Moment For long term followers of TJ, you'll know that this used to be a big thing for him. But now, his way of living in the moment is more often than not just leaving the camera at home. More recently, his content is more lifestyle (behind the scenes like cooking and coaching), or beautiful shots taken on his long runs. Hear further how TJ directs his photographs, but also his thoughts on living in the moment and looking after your headspace. https://www.instagram.com/p/B7ryXljHzC0/This caption though... Drawing Parallels Between Skiing And The Challenges Of Life Itself In this interview, TJ describes this rather poetic comparison of life to the downhill. How working hard at something and pushing through tough times make it all so worth it in the end because of the hard work and the rewards. Life is a lot like climbing and reaching the top. From taxes, to starting a company, to grizzing out a side hustle you do not enjoy to make your passions work. "These struggles are also momentary. They're fleeting just like the good moments, so you try not to grasp on to them so much. Just to be aware that they are happening, and you are capable of moving beyond that". TJ David - More Than Just Ski Mountaineering TJ asks his clients a lot about their "WHY"'s. In the interview, I turned the question on to him. There's is so much to this personal level of reasoning and spirit. But what TJ touches upon - which I think it silently very inspirational - is his love for the daily process of improving a little bit, every single day. Making those small steps that over time produce the big picture goal. Having that long-term goal. What is your long-term goal? TJ is an incredible individual, with so much to give. The 2020 ultrarunning season is in full swing, and we're back after a two-month hiatus to bring you all the news that's fit to discuss, and also a bunch that probably isn't. The Legend and I start off by discussing the surprising cancellation of the North Face Endurance Challenge series (4:00) and the Sage/Koop Twitter beef (16:00) before our whirlwind tour of results from around the globe in the first two months of the year (26:00), including the early-season Golden Ticket races, the US road 100 mile championships, Tarawara, the Spine, and much more. (Unfortunately at one point I mistakenly say that Drew Holman is from the East Coast. Not sure what that's about.)Beer for this episode: Other Half/Equilibrium Lab Daydream, Start Line Brewing Hop LoadIntro music: "Fine Line" by the BloodlettersOutro music: "When I Was Still Young" by Yard Sale
We are back with a new episode with Rebecca Garza! A relative newcomer to long-distance running in the past year but already excelling at it with some age group podiums, half-marathon PR's of 1:36:13 and going for a BQ a the Woodlands Marathon in March. We talk some humbling beginnings being born in El Paso but raised in Juarez, Mexico. From an early age, she and her mom would wake up at 3am, cross over to El Paso and go to school and then cross back. By the time she hit 16, she was still waking up at 3am, driving herself across the border for high school, then work, then cross back over at 9-10pm and then do it all over the next day. We talk discovering running for a second time after her husband bought her a Peloton Tread last year, doing 90% of her training runs on it, and then we dive deep into her first marathon at the North Face Endurance Challenge in San Francisco. She's incredibly humbled, sweet and all around amazing person and she's just scratching the surface of what she is capable of in this sport.
Clare Gallagher and Abby Levene have been best friends for a decade, are professional trail runners living in Boulder Colorado, and activists. Clare is a Patagonia athlete and works for Patagonia doing advocacy work. She has won the prestigious Leadville 100, CCC (101km sister race of the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc) and was the 2019 Western States 100 winner, where she ran the second fastest female time in race history. Days after this podcast was recorded, Clare was announced and awarded the #2 Female UROY (Ultra-runner Magazines Ultra Runner of the Year award) for 2019. Abby is a former national champion professional triathlete, who took up ultra trail running after stepping away from triathlon. She now runs for Adidas and works as a writer. Most recently, Abby placed 5th in the deeply competitive North Face Endurance Challenge 50 Mile race in San Francisco. Clare and Abby bring high energy and candidness to this episode, which really highlights their friendship.
The following episode was recorded in front of a live audience at the New York Road Runners Center as we honored some of the local runners who will be competing at the 2020 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in Atlanta on Feb. 28. For those who may not be as familiar with the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials, the top three finishers at the race will represent the United States at the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. In order to compete at the Trials, men have to run a marathon in 2:19:00 or faster. Women need to run a marathon in 2:45:00 or under. More than 200 men and 400 women have hit the mark. New York City is expected to field one of the strongest contingents of runners, especially on the women's side. Our guests for this episode: Brendan Martin of the New York Athletic Club Brendan is a Smithtown, New York native who ran at Columbia University and helped the team win an Ivy League conference cross country title in 2009. After graduating, he took to the roads as a member of the Hansons-Brooks team and debuted with a 13th place finish at the 2012 Boston Marathon. He ran 2:18:28 at the 2013 Fukuoka Marathon and qualified for the 2016 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in 2016 with a personal best of 2:16:28 at the California International Marathon. He lowered that to his current personal best of 2:15:30 at Grandma's Marathon in June 2015. He qualified for this year's Olympic trials with a 2:16:26 at the 2018 Berlin Marathon. When he's not running, he's a physical therapist at Finish Line Physical Therapy. Distance Project's Lauren Perkins Lauren is the Chief Operating Officer at Great Oaks Foundation. Lauren ran 2:42:55 at the 2018 Chicago Marathon and finished as the 18th American woman across the finish line that day. She was previously nominated for New York Road Runners' Runner of the Year (30-34). Central Park Track Club's Jenny Donnelly Jenny is a senior manager in marketing insights at strategy at Glossier. She ran cross country and track at Yale and made her marathon debut in 2013 with a 3:12. On November 15th, the North Face Endurance Challenge hosted us for a Clean Sport panel with elite trail athletes Rob Krar and Dylan Bowman, track athlete and prior Clean Sport Collective Podcast guest Alysia Montaño, and co-host Kara Goucher. With this panel, it is fascinating to hear the differences in testing and clean sport culture across road, trail and track racing. Alysia discusses her recent medal upgrade experience in Doha. Dylan and Rob provide insight into the trail community and its current rudimentary approach to drug testing. Kara discusses why the Salazar ban was such a landmark decision, and all of the athletes give their perspectives on what should come next for athletes, the governing bodies, brands, events, and the fans. Thank you to the North Face Endurance Challenge for hosting us. As a brand and event that has signed the Clean Sport pledge, we appreciate your leadership in promoting a better culture for all athletes.

She competed for the University of Colorado at Boulder as a grad student and has a background in the 5k and 10k. But as it happens so frequently to Colorado residents, the mountains came calling. In just the last few years, Abby has made a name for herself as an Adidas sponsored trail runner. And just about two weeks ago, Abby placed 5th at the renowned North Face Endurance Challenge 50 Mile Championships in her first 50-mile race ever. Talk about a debut! In this conversation, we discuss: How track prepared her for long trail races, How her love for trail running began in Boulder, CO What her transition was like from the track to the trails The mindset shifts that are necessary as you start trail running Her advice for aspiring trail runners Show Links & Resources: Follow Abby on Instagram and Strava Trail Running Resources Abby's sponsor Adidas Abby is a genuine pleasure to hang out with and her joy for the sport of running is practically tangible. I met Jeri in 2017 after The North Face Endurance Challenge 50 mile in San Francisco. Jeri and her husband were so generous in hosting me in gorgeous Marin County and I got to learn a little about their lives. I had the opportunity to catch up with Jeri this spring, fresh from her finish at the American River. Jeri is an incredible athlete, a mother, grandmother, wife to another Jerry, former development director for a rainforest conservation NGO, consultant, coach and organic food business owner. She does a lot, and her enthusiasm for the outdoor and her lifestyle is infectious. And Jeri is 63. We talk about what life was like when Jeri dipped her toe in the water of triathlon in the early 80s; her time in Ironman, including nine races at the Kona World Ironman Championships; training and racing into her 60s; the origins of her drive and motivation; and balancing her commitment to sport with a demanding career in San Francisco and running a food business. There so many older people who are doing incredible things and have decades more perspective to share, and some damn good stories, but there is limited spotlight on their achievements. This isn't to say young people don’t have valid experience to share but it’s out of balance. Especially in running media, which largely focuses on young sponsored athletes at the top of their game. I hope you'll enjoy hearing all about this inspirational woman, and sharing her story with folks in your own circle.
Kia Ora whanau. This week it is Matt’s turn to spread his wings and wobble away from the nest on his solo conversation with the one and only Zach Miller. Exploding onto the ultra scene in 2013 out of nowhere (okay, a cruise ship) with a win at the JFK 50 mile, Zach followed up the next year with a win at Lake Sonoma, has gone on to become the first American man to win CCC and is the 2015 and 2016 The North Face Endurance Challenge champion. Cool. That’s the pro-by-the-numbers part over, as Zach Miller is nothing about Zach that is by-the-numbers. Matt spoke to Zach at Peter Maksimow’s house in Manitou Springs Colorado for an amazing conversation about Zach’s roll at the iconic Barr Camp, life at 10,00 feet, Zach’s love of adventure and the challenges of training in challenging environments. We discuss managing self imposed pressure, injuries, and a new project that Zach is working on with The North Face that is still under wraps. Oh, and *spoiler alert* Zach’s focus remains on UTMB. This conversation is most excellent and we sincerely hope you like it. Enjoy!

“I said, ‘No way am I running Western States! That’s 100 miles!’” — Rob Krar, Western States Endurance Run winner 2014 Rob Krar is one of the kings of ultra running. He was a middle-distance runner through college, but then threw his running shoes in the trash, insisting he was done with running forever. Famous last words: Though Rob did take a break from running (during which time he worked grueling 12-hour graveyard shifts as a pharmacist), he eventually returned to the sport in a big way — as an ultramarathoner. He has won the most prestigious and competitive ultras, including Western States, Leadville, Run Rabbit Run, and a handful of North Face Endurance Challenge races, to name just a few. Rob is also a vocal advocate for mental health, and on this episode he opens up about his struggles with depression. Rob lives in Flagstaff, AZ, with his wife and fellow ultra runner, Christina. Bryan and Peter can't be together at the studio, but a new episode is only a phone call away. Peter is cautious about his running streak after feeling some familiar pains, while Bryan and Artist-in-Residence Andrea tackle The North Face Endurance Challenge, resulting in a mix of victories and struggles. Also, Bryan talks about being back in the racing game (although there is still so much #RebuildingBryan to be done) and Peter starts to question his racing decisions. Next, we follow Vinnie Cent to Atlanta, where he chats with Coco Esser of the November Project Atlanta tribe. Coco describes how she got into distance running, made ALL the mistakes, and fell in love with the sport. She also talks about getting into running groups when she moved to Atlanta and how she found her home with NP. Join our Strava club! https://www.strava.com/clubs/HWYRT
This episode I chat with you about my first 50K Ultra Marathon. That means 50 kilometres or for those of us that don't know what that means... it means 32 miles of running. The event was The North Face Endurance Challenge. It was a gruelling run with tons of steep inclines, scary descents, stream crossings, unstable rocky terrain, mud, black flies, and a bunch of crazy people that signed up and paid to do the event! I used specific training and eating help me complete this event as I'm not a born runner. I used things like exogenous ketones, algae, caffeine, collagen, fat, and electrolytes to fuel this run and previous training runs.
