Alysia Montaño has never stood down from a challenge. Making waves when she ran the 2014 USATF Championships at 34 weeks pregnant, the activist, mother, and Olympian wants other women to know that they have value exactly as they are. That's the driving force behind her non-profit, For All Mothers, that aims to eliminate the motherhood penalty — the phenomenon by which women face economic, social, and health disadvantages after becoming mothers — through the public lens of sports. In this week's episode, we talk about how life is for Alysia now that her work is focused own her activism instead of getting after it on the track, she shares how she takes care of herself while juggling motherhood, business, and so much more. Plus: The emotions that come with getting exactly what she deserves after finding out last year that she's a bronze medalist from the 2012 London Olympics after a competitor was banned for doping. It seems shocking that the 2024 Olympics marks the first time there will be a nursery in the Olympic Village, for mothers competing at the Games. While there has been a huge increase in recent years in the number of elite athletes returning to sport postpartum — and in the resources available to them (thanks to pro moms like Allyson Felix, Alysia Montaño, and Chelsea Sodaro) — it begs the question, "How are we JUST getting here?!"Figuring out how to train (or not) during pregnancy — how often, at what intensity — and what the timeline looks like for moms wanting to return to sport postpartum can be challenging. The research on pregnant and postpartum female athletes has been lacking, and many women face outdated beliefs from doctors and society. That is especially true for moms at the elite Olympic level.Kelly and Sara are joined by Dr. Shefali Christopher PT, DPT, PhD, LAT, ATC to discuss the latest research on training during pregnancy and postpartum, including:How to know you're ready to return to training postpartum? What return-to-sport postpartum guidelines exist for athletes? What recommendations are there for pregnant athletes?Recommended exercises, including lower extremity, core, and pelvic floor workSara also shares her personal experiences of being pregnant as a professional triathlete, along with coming back after giving birth. Not surprisingly, there isn't a "one size fits all" approach — despite what social media might say! — which is why it's important to have a network of support. Factors like childcare, sleep, nutrition, energy deficiencies, and stress all impact a mom's risk for injuries and timeline as they return to training. What else is needed in the coming years to help more female athletes during this stage of their careers? Here is some of the key research on postpartum reutrn-to-sport and training during pregnancy: Medical consensus on how to know when you're ready to return to running postpartum: https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/58/6/299Consensus on designing a return-to-run program: https://bjsm.bmj.com/content/58/4/183The four-phase approach to postpartum return-to-run: https://www.themotherrunners.com/site/wp-content/uploads/2024/02/Rehabilitation_of_the_Postpartum_Runner__A_4_Phase.3-2.pdfSign up to Receive The Feisty 40+ Newsletter:https://www.feistymenopause.com/blog/Feisty-40-plus Sign up to Receive The Feist Newsletter:https://www.womensperformance.com/the-feist Follow us on Instagram:@feisty_womens_performance Feisty Media Website:https://livefeisty.com/ https://www.womensperformance.com/ Support our Partners:Hettas: Use code FEISTY20 for 20% off at https://hettas.com/ Tifosi Optics: Use code FM20 for 20% off at https://tifosioptics.com/ The Amino Co: Shop Feisty's Favorite 100% Science-Backed Amino Acid Supplements. Elite runner and Olympian Rachel Smith tells the story of how it all went down from her viewpoint racing in the 2023 USATF 5km National Championships, which took place November 4, 2023, in New York City. This is Smith's first big event back since having her first child, her daughter, Nova, 6 months ago. Smith shares her experiences running through pregnancy, returning to training post-partum, and navigating breastfeeding as an elite level racer. And she shares her total joy of returning to competition and earning a podium spot, and what that looks like as a new mom. Smith makes note of how much she appreciates the growing support for racers who become moms. Specifically, she shouts out the pioneering organization &mother, founded by Olympian and former professional runner Alysia Montaño. The USATF 5km National Championships is a part of the championship series of races, for various different distances, that happen around the country throughout the year. Racers have a chance to earn a national title, as well as to earn prize money and points based on finishing places; points go toward the overall circuit placing. This was the final race of the circuit in 2023, so the circuit champion has been decided: the winner of the 2023 USATF Running Circuit is Ednah Kurgat, followed by Emma Grace Hurley, and in third is Nell Rojas. All three of these runners have been featured in our Race Report episodes this year. You can catch up on earlier road races in the series through our Race Reports. Each report features one runner's perspective on how it all went down, to give you an inside look at these championship events. "It shouldn't be this tough. It doesn't need to be this tough. You shouldn't need that much toughness to succeed. Of course you need to have drive and need to work hard and all those things. That's not the kind of toughness I'm talking about. I'm talking about dealing with the unnecessary obstacles that a lot of female athletes are faced with." Welcome to the new "Run Your Way" series on the Ali on the Run Show. If I've learned anything (and I have, I swear!) from 600 episodes of this show, it's that yes, there are best practices and there is plenty of good running-related advice to go around. Ultimately, though, the best way to run is your way, however that looks. This series will explore what it means to run your way. First up: former professional athlete and all-around force to be reckoned with, Lauren Fleshman, whose book, Good For a Girl: A Woman Running in a Man's World, is out today. In this conversation, Lauren dives into some of the key themes of the book, and talks about what it was like pouring her heart into these pages, and doing so during a deep depressive time in her life. She shares the most pivotal moments and decisions she faced both during and after her professional career, and explains how she found her way on the run and off. I had the pleasure and privilege of being the start and finish line race announcer at the inaugural WineShine Half Marathon in Napa Valley this past weekend — and bonus! The day before the race, I got to host a live show at the Silverado Resort and Spa with superstar guests Alysia Montaño and Stephanie Howe. We talked a lot about the highs that come with racing (like Stephanie's Western States win, and the time Alysia ran the 800m in the U.S. National Championships at eight months pregnant), and we talk about the tough stuff. The ruts. The losses. The disappointments. Alysia and Stephanie are proof that this sport can make your dreams come true and break your heart a few times along the way. "The biggest thing that I just want to stop feeling, that I continue to feel, is the time that I spent in my career being fake." - Alysia Montaño.  Alysia has joined us on 2 episodes already so you know her story well. She is a 7-time US Champion. She is an Olympian, and she has two bronze medals from the World Championships that were stolen by dopers and eventually awarded to her many years later. You may not know, however, that she is still in an ongoing battle more than 11 years later to recover $60,000 in prize money that was also stolen from her at those two events. For Alysia, it's not about the money. It's the principle that matters, and she is challenging World Athletics, the IOC, the USOPC, and USADA on this issue to set a new precedent for future athletes who might end up in the same situation.  She gives us the play-by-play on that challenge while also catching us up on the latest in her life with 3 kids, her first Spartan obstacle course race, and the important work of her non-profit &Mother. This is a tough conversation at times, but in the end, we do talk about hope and where she goes to find it. Thank you to Alysia for never shying away from the tough issues and for her commitment to leaving the sport better than she found it.  Also, special thanks to Alysia's sponsor Altra Running, signer of the Clean Sport Collective brand pledge, for hosting us in their booth for this recording during The Running Event in Austin, TX last week.

Camille Herron fell in love with South Africa's 90-kilometer Comrades Marathon as a child in Oklahoma, and it became her number one goal to win this epic race.Camille is one of the world's top ultra-distance racers with a particular talent for events on the road. She has won several world and national ultra-distance titles and has set world and national records. Camille also holds the Guinness Book of World Records title for fastest marathon in a superhero costume: she was dressed as Spiderwoman. Also in this episode, you learn about the finish line traditions and the medals runners earn at Comrades, a language of accomplishments all its own. This episode is part of our first season, about experiences in and around the Comrades Marathon, a 90-km, or roughly 56-mile, road race that takes place each year in South Africa. It is the oldest and largest ultra-distance foot race in the world. This episode's recommended resource is the Keeping Track podcast. It's cohosted by former and current professional runners Alysia Montaño, Roisin McGettigan, and Molly Huddle, and the trio discuss issues around women in sport with other notable female athletes or experts in the field. Their conversations are personal and powerful, and they get into tough issues that deserve more attention like racial and gender discrimination and inequality and drug use, that is, cheating. All of the episodes are really good listens, and in particular the interview with two-time Olympic medalist Dawn Harper Nelson is particularly memorable. Camille Herron's website: http://www.camilleherron.comCamille on Twitter: @runcamilleCamille on Instagram: @runcamilleWays to follow Strides Forward OnlineLearn more about Strides Forward on our websiteFollow Strides Forward on Instagram and Twitter: @StridesForwardBook mentioned in this episode: Lore of Running by Tim NoakesAdditional audio for this episode comes from SABC Sport 2017 live race coverage, and from an SABC post-race interview.

“Doubting yourself doesn't get you anywhere. I decided that I was going to make this happen, and I did.”   More than a decade ago, Erica Sara Reese was having a hard time. She had been working in the fashion industry, as a buyer for companies like Coach and Barneys New York, while pursuing a nutrition degree on the side. But she was also going through a divorce, and she wasn't happy — so she started creating, making jewelry at her dining room table. When her friends started having babies, she noticed they were often getting jewelry to commemorate the life change. And road races, Erica Sara says, were her babies at the time. So why not commemorate that with jewelry? She started designing necklaces and charms with her races and finish times on them, and soon, friends started asking her to design celebratory necklaces for their own races. Erica Sara Designs was born. Today, what started as a side hobby is now a wildly successful small business, and Erica Sara's designs can be seen at finish lines across the country, and on professional athletes like Molly Huddle, Colleen Quigley, and Alysia Montaño.   And Erica Sara is generous! “It felt like there was an earthquake in the running world, and we're seeing these fault lines change everything. And some things are good, and some things are weird.”   As the current American record holder in the 10,000 meters, Molly Huddle was one to watch heading into this year's Olympic Track & Field Trials. But just a few days before the Trials kicked off in Eugene, OR, Molly (who is also the American record holder in the 10 mile, the 20K, and the half-marathon) announced that she wouldn't be racing the 10K after all. She pulled out of the race, citing an injury that she's been dealing with since last year's Olympic Marathon Trials. On this episode, Molly — who represented Team USA at the last two Olympics, in 2012 in the 5000m and in 2016 in the 10,000m — talks about what it was like scratching from the biggest race of the year, and how she's handling the loss of an Olympic cycle and a chance to be on this year's team. She talks about watching her training partner and friend Emily Sisson win the 10K, shares her Trials highlights as a fan of the sport, and reflects on the current state of the running industry as a whole. Happy Mother's Day! Earlier this week, I had the honor and privilege of hosting a virtual live show with four inspiring, iconic women: Lauren Fleshman, Alysia Montaño, Stephanie Bruce, and Dawn Harper-Nelson. It was an open, honest, totally unfiltered conversation about the realities of motherhood — the good, the bad, the messy, the 4 AM feedings, and the pressure we put on ourselves to, sigh, "do it all." We talked about asking for help, and why that can be more complicated than it seems, and talked about what mothers need — like really need — to thrive in society today. (And we raised more than $5,000 for &Mother — Alysia's organization that is dedicated to breaking down barriers that limit a woman's choice to pursue and thrive in both career and motherhood — in the process!) And on a personal note: Whatever stage of motherhood you are in, please know that I see you, and you are not alone. If you're an aspiring mom, if you are trying to conceive, if you are basking in new motherhood, if you are struggling in new motherhood, if you're a seasoned mom, if you have a complicated relationship with your own mother, whatever stage or phase you are in right now, know that I see you. I see how hard you are working, how hard you are trying, how you are showing up every day, doing your best. And if no one has told you yet today: You're doing great. Truly. Mother's Day can bring up a lot of emotions for a lot of people, and I want you to protect your heart, today and always. I hope this conversation will help some people feel seen or less alone, but I also know that spending 90 minutes hearing about motherhood may not serve a lot of people right now, so please do what is best for you. Camille’s journey includes finding ultra racing after years of being an elite marathon runner. Back to Comrades, in addition to winning it being her dream, this was also literally a dream her husband, Conor, had before Camille lined up for the race in 2017. Going into that event, however, Camille was coming off a painful knee injury suffered only ten weeks beforehand. Camille is one of the world’s top ultra-distance racers with a particular talent for events on the road. This episode is part of our first season, and the theme of this season is experiences in and around the Comrades Marathon, a 90-km, or roughly 56-mile, road race that takes place each year in South Africa. It is the oldest and largest ultra-distance foot race in the world. This episode’s recommended resource is the Keeping Track podcast. It’s cohosted by former and current professional runners Alysia Montaño, Roisin McGettigan, and Molly Huddle, and the trio discuss issues around women in sport with other notable female athletes or experts in the field. Camille Herron’s website: http://www.camilleherron.comCamille on Twitter: @runcamilleCamille on Instagram: @runcamilleBook mentioned in this episode: Lore of Running by Tim NoakesAdditional audio for this episode comes from SABC Sport 2017 live race coverage, and from an SABC post-race interview. .

We’ve all seen the picture of an iceberg that shows what we see above water is only a fraction of what is happening underneath. This depiction is the reality for many people or situations that we encounter every day. The story always has more to it than first meets the eye. This is no different for Alysia Montaño. Many know her as “the runner with a flower in her hair,” or “the pregnant runner.” But like all elite athletes, Alysia is more than a runner, with a lifetime of stories that make her who she is. Today Alysia not only helped us understood who she is, but how we can look beneath the surface to understand others and even ourselves in a new light. The Pregnant Runner Although Alysia has won seven national championships and two world championships, some of her biggest recognition came when she decided to run at the 2014 USA Nationals while she was 8 months pregnant. Like you would guess, many people (who were not her coach, midwife, or doctor) began questioning what she was doing. “Is that healthy for you or the baby?” they would ask.  Alysia was being healthy, and her first daughter Linnéa was carried to full-term, strong and healthy. While Alysia didn’t PR during that race, she finished strong and proved her point. It is okay to be a mother and a runner, and it’s okay to do them simultaneously. This was just the beginning for Alysia and boldly living her beliefs. She continues to speak out today for women and underprivileged groups, working with brands that support women in their careers and their motherhood and calling out those brands that don’t What Privileges Do You Have? With all the talk of equal rights, planet conservation, and other issues, life can get overwhelming quickly. Sometimes you might just want to curl up into a cozy ball under a blanket and shut out the world. It’s easy to want to just put your head down, live your own life, and not try to change a world that can seem unchangeable at times. Alysia recommends to simply take a moment and recognize all the privileges you have when you feel this way. For those that don’t have the same privileges, they don’t have the option to hide from their challenges. They must fight every day.  All of us have both more and less privileges than other groups of people. Hopefully this gives you motivation to keep working toward a better life while being grateful for what you already have. Work hard to gain those privileges you don’t yet have, and look out for those that have even less. Put yourself in the shoes of others and you will find energy to fight for them. What It’s Like to Be a Russian Athlete Every person has a different story. When Alysia found out that she would be upgraded to the Bronze Medal from her initial fourth place finishes, it was difficult for her to describe her feelings. Of course, she was happy to find out she would receive her medal, but also upset about the entire process. It will be impossible to truly give Alysia what she deserved. A moment with her country’s flag, standing on the podium amidst other athletes, lost pay and potential contracts, and having her departed grandmother never know of her accomplishments are all part of what she will never get back. Her story was changed forever. Yulia Stepanova, the Russian athlete who was the whistleblower to set off the doping allegations was able to talk with Alysia about her experiences training as a potential Olympic athlete in Russia. Her story is very different than those runners in the U.S. While most athletes in the U.S. need to go searching for illegal performance-enhancing drugs, these Russian athletes were given pills at a young age, expected to take them, and rarely told what they were.  To perform clean, they had to overcome more hurdles than should be expected of them. Alysia recognized that Yulia not only had a much different experience than her as an elite athlete, but also risked her life in being a whistleblower. Run in Their Shoes The takeaway is straightforward, though not easy. Try to consider other people’s lives and experiences. No one has the same story as you, whether that is an underprivileged member of society or a foreign athlete. We can continue to work toward something greater by doing our best to understand the people around us.   Resources: Alysia on Twitter Alysia on Instagram Alysia’s Website Keeping-Track Podcast   Thank you to my wonderful sponsors Generation UCAN and Altra for sponsoring this episode of the Running for Real Podcast. “If we really care about the future of girls in sports, we need to invest in the girls that are actually playing these sports.”Lindsay CrouseA perfect companion piece to my recent conversation with Lauren Fleshman -- and in furtherance of better understanding the issues that swirl around gender, sport and fairness -- today I sit down with an investigative journalist breaking some of the biggest stories in women's sports.Meet Lindsay Crouse.A graduate of Harvard University, where she competed in both cross country and track and field, Lindsay is a senior staff editor and senior OpDocs producer at The New York Times. If you’ve been paying any attention to running news (or just big headlines in general) then you are already familiar with Lindsay’s work. At the epicenter of the conversation that surrounds sports and power, Lindsay is behind some of the biggest sports stories and opinion pieces in recent memory, with a particular focus on the role and state of women's distance running. Some of Lindsay's most popular pieces include How The 'Shalane Flanagan Effect' Works, which examined the former podcast guest and New York City Marathon victor's elevating impact on other women; she broke the story on Nike's refusal to guarantee female athletes' salaries during or immediately post-pregnancy; and she produced the piece in which Allyson Felix told her story around Nike and pregnancy.Lindsay also worked with last week’s guest Lauren Fleshman on her powerful November Op-Ed, I Changed My Body For My Sport. No Girl Should and is responsible for the bombshell opinion piece about the emotional abuse suffered by Mary Cain under her former coach, Alberto Salazar. I Was The Fastest Girl in America, Until I Joined Nike created such a stir, it went on to become the 42nd most read New York Times piece for all of 2019.In her role as a senior producer of OpDocs, Lindsay's many credits include the wonderful film about minimalist marathoner Memo and Walk, Run, Cha Cha, which was recently lauded with an Academy Awards nomination in the documentary short subject category. In addition, Lindsay is an accomplished athlete in her own right. With 12 marathons under her belt, she recently posted an impressive 2:53 26.2 PR -- a feat accomplished (subsequent to our conversation) while balancing the tremendous rigors of her demanding career.I first came across Lindsay by way of her recurring cameos in my friend (and RRP guest from episodes 73, 144, & 174) Casey Neistat's wildly popular vlog. So in 2015, I began following Lindsay's career. As I watched her work mature and profile grow, I eagerly awaited each new article -- and anticipated an opportunity to share her experience and insight on the podcast.Today is that day. And it's everything I hoped it would be. We begin with Lindsay's personal trajectory from Rhode Island roots and attending Harvard to landing a job at the most prestigious newspaper in the world. We discuss maternity rights and the gender wage gap by going behind the scenes on Nike' relationship with pregnant athletes. The controversies surrounding Alberto Salazar and the Nike Oregon Project. The personal stories shared by Mary Cain, Lara Goucher, Alysia Montaño and Allyson Felix. And gymnast Katelyn Ohashi's campaign to secure fair pay for NCAA athletes. We explore the ways in which the sports industry has failed to make way for women. Why almost all current sports science is based on men. And why conventional coaching has led to a sordid history of harming female athletes. In addition, Lindsay recounts what it's actually like to work at The New York Times in our post-truth, 'fake news' world. The unique pressures that accompany breaking big stories. And how she manages to balance everything -- and still kick serious ass in running. The ongoing impact of Lindsay's journalism is immeasurable. So it was an absolute honor and a delight to sit down with her.Note: Because this conversation transpired at the New York Times offices (as opposed to my studio), we did not film the conversation. In addition, it was recorded in mid-October and thus not current with the immediate news cycle.I can't say enough good things about Lindsay and the work she is doing to advance the role and voice of women in sports. I love this conversation. I sincerely hope you do as well.Peace + Plants,Listen, Watch & Subscribe Apple Podcasts | YouTube | Spotify | Stitcher | Google PodcastsThanks to this week’s sponsorsCalm: The #1 app for meditation and sleep with 100+ guided meditations covering anxiety, focus, stress, sleep, relationships and more. With this week's episode, we follow one badass female track field athlete with another. Chris and Kara interview mom and 800m specialist Alysia Montaño (@alysiamontano) in a wide-ranging and emotional interview. Alysia is a 6-time US Champion in the 800 and also owns 3 Bronze medals from 3 different World Championships. Unfortunately, 2 of those medals came via "medal upgrade" after drug cheat Mariya Savinova was convicted of doping violations. Alysia is finally due to receive those medals in a medal ceremony coming up next week at the 2019 World Championships in Doha. In the interview, Alysia discusses the numerous challenges she has faced in track and field in spite of her success, including a contract pay reduction after only 1 year as a pro, competing against and being "robbed" by drug cheats, having her pay suspended during and after pregnancy, and the 6 and 9-year wait to finally receive the medals she earned in 2011 and 2013.  Alysia talks about how the IAAF and the other powers-that-be in this sport have let her down and the trauma that it has caused her financially and emotionally. She also provides her perspective on what needs to change to protect clean athletes and female athletes who decide to start a family (#dreammaternity). Alysia is real, honest, and brave in sharing her truth. Her story provides powerful perspective on why we need to elevate her voice for the sake of protecting current and future athletes from the challenges she has faced.

Trek-Segafredo rider discusses parenting, pro cycling and dreams of winning a second world title in Yorkshire   Welcome to the Cyclingnews Podcast Women's Edition, brought to you by Sportful, Pinarello and Floyds of Leadville. In this episode Cyclingnews' women's editor Kirsten Frattini sits down with former world champion and new mom Lizzie Deignan to discuss motherhood, her postpartum return to pro cycling, dreams of winning a second world title at Yorkshire World Championships, and her biggest hopes for the future of women's cycling. Deignan took time away from the sport to give birth to her first child and only recently returned to the peloton with her new team Trek-Segafredo at the Ardennes Classics, Tour de Yorkshire, Tour of California and the OVO Energy Women's Tour, where she won the overall title. At a time when major sport sponsors are pushing promotional content geared toward equality, female athletes such as American Olympians Kara Goucher, Allyson Felix and Alysia Montaño, have exposed American company Nike for its performance-based reductions clause in athlete contracts, and how that affects athletes who want to have a baby. Montaño wrote a detailed opinion piece in The New York Times titled "Nike told me to dream crazy, until I wanted a baby", where she described the company's policy of reducing and cutting salaries after some of its female athletes decided to become pregnant. Female cyclists can relate to this policy as contracts have been cancelled or considered nullified if an athlete becomes pregnant. Hear from Deignan on her decision to start a family while at the peak of her cycling career and why she left long-time team Boels Dolmans. She also speaks about the importance of competing for a team and sponsors that support her cycling career while also being a mother. Deignan also spoke about the UCI's decision to include a maternity clause and other insurances into its standard athlete-team contracts beginning in 2020. But she noted that a similar amendment, in the form of a paternity clause, would be welcomed among the men's peloton as well. We hope you enjoy our discussion with Lizzie Deignan. Sarah and Ellison Weist delight in chatting with professional runner Alysia Montaño, a 2012 Olympian and 7-time (!!!) U.S. Champion in the 800-meters. Due with baby #2 next month, Alysia talks about busting the long-standing myths of staying active during pregnancy. Alysia shares how she is navigating her “shifting” body—and how she schooled her regular UPS driver in the power of a pregnant woman. She tells why she wears a flower in her hair when she runs—as well as how she gained her childhood nickname of Icebox! Find out what “drain the dragons” means in this pro mother runner’s life, and delight at her gotta-grab-life-by-the-horns approach to motherhood. Sarah is awestruck by an insight from Alysia, borrowing the phrase to fuel her marathon. Alysia even shares a bit of her birth story, complete with a BOSU ball. Carrie interviews Olympian Alysia Montaño! They chat about food, racing during pregnancy, athlete sponsorship, and much more!  Show notes for this episode can be found at ctollerun.com. Alysia Montaño Alysia attended Canyon High School in Santa Clarita, CA where she became a multi sport standout in basketball, soccer, and athletics. Under Tony Sandoval at the University of California Berkeley, is where Alysia will become the 800m specialist she is today. In 2007 as a junior, Alysia recorded the best season in Cal Berkeley history finishing undefeated and claiming both the indoor and outdoor NCAA titles as well as her first USA Championship title. Heading into the 2008 season, Alysia was ranked #1 in the USA and she was more focused then ever to make the Olympic team. Rounding out her senior year coupled with intense training, the pressure began to take a toll on Alysia and, throughout the indoor and outdoor season, a stress fracture formed in her navicular bone and finally gave in at the 2008 Olympic Trials. Alysia rehabbed in San Diego at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista during 2009 where she was under the watchful eye of Juaquim Cruz, Brazil's 800m '84 gold medalist. At the end of the year, Alysia realized Chula Vista was not the place for her so she made the move back to Berkeley to resume with Tony Sandoval. 2010 was Alysia's comeback year and she was back with a vengeance. Alysia started off the season by earning a bronze medal at the 2010 World Indoor Championships in Doha then went on to claim another outdoor USA title. Alysia finished the season with a PR and the worlds fastest time by winning Monaco's Hercules Diamond League with a time of 1:57.34. For the next three years, Alysia defends her title as USA Champion to go on and become a finalists in the 2011 World Championships(4th), 2012 Olympics(5th), and 2013 World Championships(4th). With disheartening finishes at every major event, Alysia decides to take the 2014 season off year to start a family. During pregnancy Alysia maintained fitness by continuing to run and at 34 weeks pregnant, Alysia decided to take advantage of her qualifying standard and enter into the 2014 Outdoor USA Championships just to have fun and advocate for fit pregnancies. Little did she know it would make headlines world wide and become a major topic of discussion on almost every news outlet. With some calculations of web analytics. Alysia's pregnant run had 5 times as many hits as all of her championship wins combined. In 2015 Alysia planed on slowly returning to form and use it as a building block for 2016, but Alysia surprised everyone (including herself). Claiming her first indoor championship in the 600m 6 months after giving birth, Alysia set the tone for 2015. In March at the 2015 World Relays, Alysia anchored the USA 4x800m relay team to an American Record with the fastest split of competition with a time of 1:58.90. In June, Alysia went into USA Outdoor Championships as an underdog because of a nagging injury. Alysia adjusted her game plan and changed her running style and advanced through each round running with the pack and against all odds Alysia claimed yet another USA title bringing her total to 7 and earning a spot on USA's 2015 world Championship team. Keeping her schedule light, Alysia opted for the Pan Am Games and earned herself a gold in the 4x400m relay and a silver in the 800m. In Beijing, China Alysia's 2015 World Championships were cut short; with about 200m to go in the first round, Alysia was tripped by a runner trying to pass on the inside thus bringing her down to the track.

In this episode of Keep Moving Forward I interview Team USA Track and Field Olympian and 7x USA champion in the 800 meters, Alysia Montaño. “No matter what happens, finish strong.” These words, spoken by the great Alysia Montaño, mean more to her today than they ever have before. After a fifth place finish in the 800 meters in the 2012 Olympic Games, Alysia was ready to forge ahead and claim gold in 2016. However, after a devastating fall in the finals of the Olympic Trials, Alysia saw her chances at pursuing this Olympics fade away. But she did not stay down for long. In fact, she didn’t stay down at all. Alysia picked herself up and crossed the finish line, inspiring all who witnessed the race that day. On top of being a 7-time USA champion, Alysia has faced much adversity in her sport, including the recent revelation that in her 800 meter race in the 2012 Olympics, both the first and third place finishers were found to have taken performance enhancing drugs; therefore cheating a podium finish away from Alysia. Through injury, setback, and competing with those who don’t respect the sport as she does, Alysia never faltered. She stayed positive and upbeat, knowing that every day is a blessing. She is the living embodiment of “keep moving forward” and it was an honor to have the opportunity to speak with her for this episode of my podcast. I hope that you enjoy my talk with the Olympian with the flower in her hair, Alysia Montaño. If you would like to keep up to date on everything that Alysia is up to, you can head over to http://www.alysiamontano.com/ and follow her on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter all @AlysiaMontano.
