Thomas Reiss, an accomplished Ultra Runner in his own right took the reigns as the International Athlete Manager for the Snowman Race and he discusses this race of a lifetime that follows the trail of the famous Snowman Trek, which has been completed by fewer people than Everest. By the age of 20, Cat Bradley had run her first 50K. By 23, she had bagged multiple ultra trail running wins including a victory at Western States 100 and top 10 finishes and podiums at some of the word's biggest races like Leadville 100 and UTMB. She even had time to score an FTK, becoming the first woman to go under 8 hours on the Grand Canyon's Rim to Rim to Rim. Simply put, Cat Bradley was born to race Ultra Marathons. A collision with a drunk driver took away the hearing in her left ear, left her with a broken pelvis and lingering nerve damage that has delayed - rather than derailed - her plans. We talk about what it has taken to get back into racing form. Why fear of failure leads one to run away from, rather than toward one's goals, and which comedian she'd most like to share a long run with. On today's show, we have a very special treat in the form of the Trail & Ultra Running Husband and Wife team of Abby and Cordis Hall. Abby has been lighting up the ultra scene with multiple finishes over the years at races like the North Face Endurance Challenge, Leadville Trail 100, and of course Ultra Trail du Mont-Blanc or UTMB - most recently with an impressive 3rd place podium finish. Cordis is no stranger to the ultra scene with impressive finishes at UTMB, TDS and most recently a 100K finish at Innsbruck Alpine Trailrun Festival. We get into their origins as runners and husband and wife by biting off massive challenges together - sometimes failing, sometimes succeeding, but always loving and supporting one another. I recorded this way back in February and the episode sat on the shelf since then, but with the relaunch, I wanted to share the conversation with all of you. Our guests for episode 49 are no strangers to the podcast - the King and Queen of FKTs Jason Hardrath and Ashly Winchester join us today as they team up to talk about doing massive efforts - Ashly with an unsupported record on the JMT - or John Muir Trail and Jason collecting his 100th FKT by bagging Washington's 100 highest peaks on Bulger's. We talk about catching COVID at 18,000 feet, hallucinating hermit crabs, supporting one another around the world and why being a good partner sometimes means being as unsupportive as possible. It's always a blast to catch up with these two - it's a show that was 10 months in the making, so if you're ready for the show, crank it up and let's go. It's a great conversation where we talk about the differences - and similarities - between BUDS training and Leadville as well as get details on a harrowing night spent at 14,000 feet on Long's Peak, unable to descend until morning. With an Olympic hopeful runner for a father, and not wanting to compete with his siblings in the family business of running, Dan King pushed off his destiny early in his athletic life with wrestling and other activities. In an effort to build fitness in the off season, he finally succumbed to Cross Country where he would show some of the early talent that would earn him a world record in the 60-64 age group mile with a blistering time of 4:49 as well winning the USATF Colorado Long Distance Runners of the Year for 2021. In his own words, Dan doesn't consider himself competitive, but achievement-oriented. And I think you'll find him to be amazing. So, if you're ready for the show, crank it up and let's go.
Ryan Krol of Boundless Endurance Coaching is our guest for Episode 46. Ryan's love for running ultra distances and exploring the mountains ignites his passion for showing people how to enjoy a lifestyle centered on fitness and health. With over 50 ultra marathon finishes of his own - and 2 6th Place finishes in the multi-race Leadman Challenge - Ryan and his group of coaches at Boundless helped over 40 of their coached athletes cross the finish line at the 2022 Leadville 100 run. We talk about how the physical takes you through mile 60, but the mental gets you the last 40. And we talk about what it means to be on the Green Team and how that translates to success in such a grueling race. Formerly known as Dirty Kanza, the race challenged Taylor to the bitter end through nearly 24 hours of racing. Welcome back everybody - after a bit of a Summer break, we are back with new episodes of the podcast. As always, I am your host Troy Busot and right out of the gate we have a conversation with an amazing running who will be representing her home country of Mexico in the upcoming Olympics in Tokyo. Imagine yourself at 11 years old. Growing up in a small town about 100 miles outside of Mexico City. And every day after school, you make your way to a crowded city bus that takes you the hour-long journey, solo, to running practice. For eight years, you do this, winning youth championships, and ultimately a full ride scholarship to Kansas State University, where upon arriving you know zero English, crash headlong into a whole new level of competition, deal with injuries and burnout, and ultimately set running aside to pursue a desk job. That alone would have a made a great job, but in part 2 we'll talk about the 180 degree turn that life threw at our guest that takes her from a Boston Qualifying time at her first marathon in Seattle, to uprooting her entire life and relationship to move back to her home town and begin training again, falling flat on her face in her first test, only to break a 22 year old record in the outdoor 1500 meter run mere months later. It's an inspiring and amazing story, so if you're ready for the show, crank it up and let's go!

42 - Phil Pinti Phil Pinti - aka @macho_man_runneth - cruised into his 30s with brass ring firmly in hand. A post-9/11 stint in the Marines had him deployed to - and now safely home from Iraq. Married to his college sweetheart and the love of his life and raising two beautiful young children. A life-long athlete, our guest made the Hershey Half Marathon an annual family pilgrimage. When hip-pain sidelined his wife, however, and normal treatments did nothing to alleviate the injury, tests revealed that his 33 year old bride was suffering from stage-4 lung cancer, which would tragically take her life just 6 short months later. Faced with picking up the pieces and raising their two young children alone, Phil turned to a local race - the Mid Maryland Ultra 50K - in part to search for and feel a pain different from the anguish he had felt from his wife's passing just 3 months earlier. The race gave him some perspective and as you'll hear, made him a better man and father, and drove him forward in his life. He continues to live the lessons that he learns on ultra courses around the country - which he will be doing in a few weeks here in Colorado at the Desert RATS ultra stage race which will take him on a 6 day running journey from Fruita, CO to Moab, UT. It will be his 3rd running of this race. Think back to Junior High. What were your highlights? Your accomplishments? Today's guest was introduced to running by his elementary school's P.E. coach who organized a daily run and jog for his students. Being somewhat socially awkward, this young man spent his lunch hour running laps and eventually logging over 60 miles as a 6th grader. Before moving on to High School, he finished his 8th grade year by writing his own training plan for and completing the Eugene Marathon. He spent his High School years on the Dean's list - maintaining a near 4.0 GPA, and managed to establish himself as a respectable 3K runner in Track, completed several other marathons and finished two 24 hours runs - each time passing 100K. He earned himself an academic full ride scholarship to college - where he is now - saving money for his first home with a goal of graduating on time, debt-free, and in control of his future. That P.E. teacher, incidentally, was none other than the guest from episode 28, THE King of FKTs, Jason Hardrath. And the Student, and today's guest, is Chris Eck. A truly humble and inspirational young man with whom I was honored to spend a Saturday afternoon speaking with. And that's the show! Hope you enjoyed it. After an arm injury cut his collegeate pitching career short, you could say that today's guest took some off of athletics. So much so, in fact, that he gained the weight equivalent of another version of himself - 180 pounds to be exact. After some failed attempts to reverse course and resigned to this fate, he told his folks that maybe they should stop pushing him to lose the weight and end his sedintary lifestyle - he just didn't see a solution within himself. Then, he found what many would consider to be an unlikely catalyst that would get him off the couch and out onto the first of what would be many runs in his journey to losing 180 pounds and running his first 40 mile Ultra in Pennsylvania. What was the secret? Well, you'll have to listen to the show to find out. Once hooked, he made the commitment to compete for an OCR Age Group World Championship in his 40s. Today's Guest needs little introduction. He is a former professional cyclist, Co-Founder of legendary training platform Training Peaks, and the son of the author of several endurance training bibles, Joe Friel. That is right, Dirk Friel joins us today on the Athlinks Podcast. We had a great chat about training slower to get faster. The importance of recovery days. and he will school you on the importance of the 80/20 rule. We reminisce about his youth spent as an American in Europe as a pro cyclist and how he and fellow racer and previous guest of this podcast, Anton Villatoro were bamboozled by Guatemalan race officials who deliberately directed them into a wrong turn, costing the American's the race. Dirk is a great guy - fantastic coach and entrepreneur and I think you'll love hearing what he has to say about the world of training, racing, and living an active life. Our guest on the podcast today is Sika Henry - a 2x Marathon champion who turned her talents to the world of triathlon. A serious bike crash in 2019 slowed her quest to become the first African American Woman to hold a Pro Triathlon Card, but she still managed to qualify for the Ironman World Championships in Kona later that year. She focused heavily on her run training through the pandemic and her tri season kicked off this past weekend at Challenge Miami Half Ironman. We recorded this show just before she left, but I'm happy to report that she finished safely and with a P.R. of 4 hours, 38 minutes in her first effort of the season. Instead of asking yourself "how long do I want to live", you should really start asking yourself, "how do I want to live". We all want to live forever, but if you're listening to this show, chances are, you've got some minimum standards that you'd like to set as the years pass by - especially of the athletic variety. On the podcast today, we welcome Selene Yeager - host of the Hit Play, Not Pause podcast - a show for performance-minded women who aren't willing to put their best years behind them. We discuss the affects of aging on the body - especially in your 40s, 50s, and beyond, and how to optimize your physiology, maintain your fitness, and harness your power. It's not just for ladies, or even us older athletes - if you or someone you know is planning on getting older now or sometime in the future - even if you don't accept it - you need to give this a listen. Our guest today is multi-sport athlete, Ultra Runner, Professional Chef, self-described advocate and activist for body politics, and 5' 3" Brooklynite force of nature, Latoya Shauntay Snell - also known as the Running Fat Chef. A quick glance at her Athlinks profile shows 112 races completed, over twelve hundred miles finished and in a span of just 28 days, she crossed finish lines at the Chicago Marathon, Javelina Jundred 60K, and the TCS New York City Marathon. She's a brand ambassador for Trek Bikes, a sponsored HOKA ONE ONE Athlete, and yet, she spends at least part of her time answering critics who say she doesn't "look like a runner". She talks openly about her DNFs, her detractors, and the additional struggles that have strengthened her as an athlete, woman, wife and mother. She's on a mission to emancipate herself in order to help others see the power in themselves and judging by her successes both in and outside of racing - it's working. A post high school canoe expedition in the heart of the Amazon Basin reconnected Ellen Falterman with her adventurer brother who was five years her senior. The harrowing trip lit a fire for expeditions that would lay dormant until his tragic death just a short time later. On the one-year anniversary of his passing, our guest put her life on pause in order to experience an adventure and grieve the loss of her hero by paddling solo down the Missouri River. The answers that she received on that trip, however, were to questions that she had not yet asked. Her pause turned to play and became her new normal as Ellen built her new life around expeditions. She tells these stories and more on this episode of the Athlinks Podcast - paddling the Amazon, Missouri, and Mississippi Rivers and up next - a 6 plus year challenge to circumnavigate the globe in a sea-ready rowboat starting at the Gulf of Mexico and heading West. Happy doesn't begin to describe how I feel to have stumbled upon her story and I am honored to bring a version of it to you today. I hope you enjoy meeting one of the most savage and admirable people I've met and maybe her words will inspire your support in her journey to become the first person to circumnavigate the earth in a row boat. 031 - Roderick Sewell Where does character come from? Is it born or bread? Inherited or built? Perhaps for today's guest, it was nurtured through the selfless and courageous actions of his mother. You can't tell the story of Roderick Sewell without starting with his mother, Marian Jackson. When her son was born missing both tibias, she had to make the decision to keep his legs and confine him to a wheel-chair, or amputate and reach for a chance at a more normal life with prosthetics. Faced with the insurmountable cost, however, she braved a second decision to quit her modest but stable job so that California Children's services would pay for the prosthetics and give Roderick a chance at walking, and who knows, maybe even more. The sacrifice that she made had the inseperable pair dipping in and out of homeless shelters in San Diego. Spotted at a train stop by a representative from Challenged Athletes Foundation, Roderick was introduced to a new world of athletics which would later land him on the U.S. Para-Swimming team at the 2014 Pan Pacific Para-swimming Championships, winning Gold and bronze, as well as carry him across the finish line as the first bilateral above the knee amputee to finish Kona - the Ironman World Championships. Roderick and Marian are an incredibly inspiring, amazing mother-son duo and he wouldn't mind me telling you that he owes her everything and wants the world to know it. Just one day after finishing her first 50 miler, the Camp Fire began its path of destruction in Northern California, ultimately claiming 153,000 acres, 85 human, and an untold number of animal lives - a horror that Ashly Winchester came face to face with as a vertinary Nurse in the area. Wave-after-wave of life and death emergencies flooded the clinic where she worked and when it was all over, the toll on her own soul proved to be a heavy catalyst behind her full-time journey into FKTs, freelance writing, and Podcasting as the host of Womxn of the Wild - a community of adventure-women who support and help each other grow. A quick look at today's guest's Athlete profile on FastestKnownTime.com shows Ashly as the current Queen of FKTs as she lays claim to 39 of the fastest known time efforts in the world. Coincidentally - or not - this Queen shares her realm with her boyfriend, the current King of FKT, Episode 28's very own Jason Hardrath. Stick around after the closing credits for a bonus conversation about how Ashly sees the two measuring up on different courses and what, if anything, it would take for her to overtake Jason on an FTK course in the wild. A childhood framed by his family's love for running leads a young man on adventures across several continents, stoking his love and optimism for humanity. Years later, a post-run tea is interrupted by a radio report of the fatal bombing of the Boston Marathon. Our guest, clear on the other side of the Atlantic and armed with not much more than social media and a simple idea, sets out to lend a humble hand. 11 weeks later the final baton of the One Run for Boston was handed to a survivor across the finish line, celebrating and honoring those who were injured and lost their lives, having raised $600,000 for those affected. Our guest today is Danny Bent, founder of @onerun_global. A self-described happiness guru and runner, he's quick to point out that he's just a human who loves other humans and sees the best in all of us. As an example, a call out to his social media had him leading a 9 day running expedition bisecting Iceland from North to South with 20 fellow travelers - many of whom had never completed a single marathon, much less the 9-straight marathons and ultras that were required for this effort. But they all finished - in no small part I'm sure to the exuberance of Danny Bent. You will be grinning ear to ear as I was interviewing him. Be sure to listen to the end to find out how to enter the Danny Bent Adventure Grant for $3000 to fund the adventure of your choosing. So if you're ready for the show, crank it up and let's go! FKT - shorthand for “Fastest Known Time” is essentially, a speed record on any given route. Anyone, at any time, on any day, can try to break a record and set a new FKT. After a serious car accident took him off the roads, today's guest shifted from marathons and ironmans and took his training to the trails and mountains where he found a passion for what I'll call "creative athletic pursuits". If you visit the official FKT website, you'll see the name Jason Hardrath at the top of the leaderboard with a whopping 94 FKT efforts. Part Cartographer, Mountaineer, Race Director, Athlete, and a dozen other skills, Jason just might be the Dave McGillivray of FKTs a prolific route builder in his own rite - you'll love hearing how Jason strings together routes and how he feels when others find them, complete them, and occasionally set their own FKT on his creations. If you love what you do for a living, you'll never work a day in your life. Or so the saying goes. From the very first email that I received from today's guest, I could feel her enthusiasm toward her job, her employer, and the athletes whom she represents as the Head of Communications for the Abbott World Marathon Majors. Lorna Campbell joins us today to discuss how she has parlayed a letter writing campaign, relentless volunteering and networking into a decades-long career in sport. Having worked multiple Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and the biggest marathons in the world as well as living in several different countries, she knows a thing or two about loving her job to the point that hard work hardly feels like work at all. She has some great advice for those of you looking to break in or make a change in your career path. Like the tip of an iceberg, what the outside world sees is the shining 2 hour 56 minute and 19 second marathon finish that sticks up above the surface. What is not seen is the incredible mass of hours, miles, support from family and friends, previous shortfalls and near misses that went into the celebrated achievement. On the podcast today, we have Marcus Brown - otherwise known as @TheMarathonMarcus - of A Runner's Life podcast. He joins us from London where thoughtfully recounts his ten year journey from a barely sub-5 hour marathon at London to his freshly minted sub-3 at Dourney Lake. I am once again greatly inspired by a guest. Marcus' approach to both training and racing has motivated me to adopt some of his practices and philosophies. What is it they say about people who can be identified by only one name? Well if you follow the sport of Ultra Running, you know Jamil. A talent for running and a youth spent hiking and camping around the Arizona wilderness was the perfect recipe for today's guest, Jamil Coury to find his passion as an ultra trail runner and founder of Aravaipa Running - one of the premiere event companies specializing in this sport. Years later, Aravaipa now hosts around 40 races all around Arizona and into Utah and Colorado. In his spare time, not that there's much of that these days, Jamil can be seen in the lead pack at races like Barkly Marathons, UTMB, and Hard Rock 100. And to think, it all started with an 800 mile solo-hike on the Arizona Trail to recovery from tax season as an accountant. Our guest today has quite literally been chasing his passions for all of his adult life. Whether it was moving from Atlanta to Boston and later to Los Angeles to become a stand-up comic, or shuttering a burgeoning staffing company to report on - and participate in - the fledgling sport of Obstacle Course Racing, Matt B. Davis of Obstacle Racing Media has used a combination of grit and fearlessness to bite off big projects and chase envious goals. The day after recording this show, in fact, Matt knocked out a Fastest Known Time (or FKT) on the entire 61.5-mile Silver Comet Trail. I'm a fan of his work. He's excellent at his job as the host of the Obstacle Racing Media Podcast and I had a great time talking with him as I'm sure you will hear. How much of your potential are you leaving on the table? How much of your training are you leaving to chance? Are your periodized workouts the right ones for your phenotype? What the heck is a phenotype? If you're wondering how to take your performance to the next level, maybe it's time to think about a coach. And that's why I brought Beth Leasure to the Athlinks Podcast. We jump around quite a bit and talk about how Beth uses tools like Training Peaks and Whoop to measure and track performance, rest, and heart rate to guide the workouts of herself and the athletes she coaches. We talk about the importance of knowing your phenotype and structuring your workouts around maximizing your strengths. And we talk about her own journey through self-doubt, discovery, and delight in the world of cycling. Jeff Tkach from the Rodale Institute What if there existed one simple solution in our fight against food insecurity, water quality, climate change, global poverty, healthcare & our dependence on pharmaceuticals, and even the survivability of current and future pandemics? And what if that solution was literally right under our feet? Today on the Athlinks Podcast, we are diving into our soil with Jeff Tkach, my friend and former colleague, and current Chief Impact Officer at the Rodale Institute. One of the goals for The Athlinks Podcast is to give voice to not just the elite endurance athletes of the world, but to folks who are crossing their own epic finish lines while juggling work and life along with training and racing. Claire Bird Athlinks Profile https://www.athlinks.com/athletes/404678536/results Quote: 18:24-19:15 I like to look at all of the training plans and sort of pick and choose what I think works for me and what I think I'm missing and usually if I feel like it's something that's too hard it's probably because that's what I need in my training. So to push yourself, I hate short sprints, like 400s are probably what I hate the most, so it's probably what I need the most. Ep 16: Bill Bucklew As the saying goes, when life gives you lemons, make yourself a glass of lemonade and then sip it while walking from one end of the United States to the other while raising awareness for Parkinson's Disease. Our guest Bill Bucklew, waxes philosophic as he shares his journey through a diagnosis of young-onset Parkinsons in his early 40s. Not one to let it slow him down, it launched a series of finishes from Ironman Wisconsin, a stroll from Georgia to California, and has put him in-line to earn his 6-stars of the Abbot World Marathon Majors. This is a conversation that I think will stay with me for the rest of my life. Bill is a super inspiring guy - a totally unassuming savage as you will see - I think you're going to love hearing his words and his story. Rebuilt from a pile of bones scattered on a California roadside after a speeding truck interrupted his lunch ride, our guest has forged a savage will and unmatched intensity over his 30-year racing career to notch: 8 USAT Duathlon All-American honors Multiple Podiums in Spartan and other OCR races +/- 500 finish lines around the world (the 300 of which can be found online are on his Athlinks profile, by the way) And a Masters in Sports psychology I sat down with Kevin Gillotti - today's guest - to discuss his philosophy on discipline in both life and racing, and what it has taken him to prioritize finish lines above nearly all else in his life. 14. Fitz Koehler - Overcoming Cancer While Leaning Into Races Runners. Set. Go. Our guest today has exalted these 3 simple commands over loudspeakers at races like the Los Angeles Marathon and countless others to kickstart the journey of tens of thousands of runners over the years. But when she found a pea-sized lump in her breast that turned out to be cancer, those commands became her mantra to begin her own race against an aggressive tumor. On the podcast today we sit down with Fitz Koehler - renowned race announcer, fitness advocate, author and, now, cancer survivor about her journey and, like the title of her book, My Noisy Cancer Comeback - Running at the Mouth While Running for My Life, - her survival. 013 - Kelly Catale Grinding through deep valleys and high over mountain peaks, pushing and suffering through despair and isolation - these are feelings familiar to any elite-level mountain biker. But when the physical pain is exceeded by the emotional ache of depression and anxiety, no amount of fitness can ease the torment. On the podcast today, professional mountain biker and gravel rider Kelly Catale joins us to share her lifelong struggle with depression and anxiety. She talks about the role that it plays in her racing and how a like-minded coworker saved her from her worst moment. I want to thank Kelly for sharing her story; this is a conversation that - were it not for this podcast - frankly I never would have had the opportunity to have and, so, even though we are just 13 short episodes in, I'm really grateful for the opportunity to do this and for Kelly's willingness to share her story. (PART 1) https://www.kellycatale.com/blog1/how-did-you-get-here-part1 Quotes: "Don't thrive in shame. Don't suffer in silence" "I’m a coward because I am willing to accept praise without sharing everything. Even worse, I was inadvertently exploiting a system that is designed to repress publicizing something so incredibly common in our population." "Part of my motivation to stay active and insanely busy is to keep myself away from the Darkness."

Two roads diverged in a wood, and 200 gravel riders in Pennsylvania took the one less traveled by. And this damned COVID made all the difference.
