Full Rig Details: https://bit.ly/SteveHackettRRSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTube “I always apologize to the two Erics [Clapton and Johnson], ‘You have no idea how much I've ripped from you,'” joked Joe Bonamassa during a recent video with YouTuber Rick Beato. The Grammy-winning bluesman followed that up with a gracious response: “We all get it from somewhere.”That “somewhere” is a muse that molds every guitarist's individualistic style and voice. For example, Eddie Van Halen shook the world and confounded guitarists with his explosive two-hand, finger-tapped “Eruption” performance on Van Halen's 1978 debut. Yngwie Malmsteen put listeners in awe with his dazzlingly clean and swift sweep arpeggios. They both became synonymous with those talented techniques, and were heralded as pioneering groundbreakers. But where did they get the ideas from before expressing and executing them it in their signature style? Both took a page out Steve Hackett's prog-rock playbook. Hackett's two-hand tapping technique can be heard in the early '70s on Genesis' albums Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot. Hackett's sweep picking was first heard on the 1973 Selling England by the Pound track “Dancing with the Moonlit Knight.” Those contributions alone should've been enough to land Hackett in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. (His combined work on six Genesis albums in six years earned him a slot in 2010.) On top of that smashing success and influence, he's recorded nearly 30 solo albums—ranging from prog-rock and blues to world and classical—over a dozen live albums, and even traded licks with Steve Howe in the short-lived supergroup GTR. Hackett might not be recalled like the other guitar greats, but without his shoulders to stand on, those first-name giants might not have shone as bright. Hackett's headlining Ryman Auditorium tour stop in late October 2023 celebrated the 50th anniversary of Genesis' Foxtrot—a seminal, prog-rock tour de force that was recorded when singer Peter Gabriel, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford, drummer Phil Collins, keyboardist Tony Banks, and Hackett were in their early 20s. Before the show, PG's Chris Kies was invited onstage to go over the minimal-but-mighty setup used by Hackett. First tech Vince O'Malley detailed a Fernandes goldtop (once owned by Gary Moore) with its limitless Sustainer circuit and a treasured nylon-string Alvarez built by master luthier Kazuo Yairi in the 1970s. Then Hackett himself joined the fun and plugged his Fernandes into his pedalboard to show off all the sounds, tones, and colors he requires to honor his days in Genesis.Shop the Rig:D'Addario Pro-Arte' Nylon Light Tension EJ43 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/jrGvL5Engl Powerball - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/VmvG53Marshall 1960A 4x12 Cabinet - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/XYvVeaCelestion G12T-75W Speakers - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/9gjXYyTech 21 SansAmp GT2 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/zN57VMBoss PS-6 Harmonist - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/DKZ2NnEHX Attack Decay - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/1rMmNdFishman Aura - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/g1e2EBDigiTech Mosaic - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/k01mqNIbanez TS9 Tube Screamer - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/EKVmjeDigiTech Whammy WH-5 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/q4LBROTC Electronic Flashback 2 X4 Delay - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/B0V6MLMXR EVH Phase 90 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/vNbBJjVoodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Plus - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/LXm31VDunlop 105Q Cry Baby Bass Wah - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/Gm4vNkRadial ProDI Passive Direct Box - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/PyqVbNErnie Ball Extra Slinkys - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/ZQvZA1Full Rig Details: https://bit.ly/SteveHackettRRSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear:...

Yes, Sadfans, we're giving over our 75th episode to the unsung heroes of every band that ever set foot in a recording studio or onto a stage - those apparently indefatigable timekeepers without whom there would be little or no momentum. Stuck behind the kit at the back of the stage, these are the artisans of the hard rock and heavy metal engine room. Whether it's a sense of rhythm combined with a diver's boot (h/t to Gillan's Mick Underwood), the professorial science of Neil Peart, or the tour de force blunt trauma approach of Bonzo, these are the men and women who provide the metronome when you're standing with your feet apart and headbanging your way to an early aneurysm. Naturally, the list of noteworthy sticksmen is ineffably long, so consider this part one of a theme the Sadmen will undoubtedly return to in episodes to come. But for this episode the lads have picked three drummers who have, to some extent, shaped the technical art of hitting the skins with a lump of wood. First up, Phil Collins in his second outing with Genesis for 1972's Foxtrot. Having already helped to shape the Charterhouse proggers' sound on his debut release, Nursery Cryme the year before, Collins, Banks, Gabriel and Rutherford return a year later with a release that would achieve immortality in the genre. The boys' next stop was six years later, as Y&T - then known still as Yesterday and Today - drop their sophomore 1978 release Struck Down. Though three years away from the standard-bearing  Earthshaker, this is the album that perhaps best showcases the undeniable talent of their man on the kit, Leonard Haze. And the lads round off proceedings with Jeff Pocaro and TOTO's commercial juggernaut IV, which boasts the ghost notes on album opener Rosanna that to this day separate the men from the boys when it comes to high drumming art. Enjoy!

Steve Hackett joined Genesis at the beginning of 1971 and gained an international reputation as the guitarist in the band's classic line-up alongside Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins. Hackett's intricate guitar work was a key element of Genesis' albums from Nursery Cryme (1971) to Wind And Wuthering (1977) including the classic Selling England By The Pound. After leaving Genesis at the end of 1977, Hackett's solo career, which now spans more than 30 albums, has demonstrated his extraordinary versatility with both electric and acoustic guitar. Hackett is renowned as both an immensely talented and innovative rock musician and a virtuoso classical guitarist and composer and this was recognized in 2010 when he was inducted into the Rock Hall Of Fame. He has also worked alongside Steve Howe of YES in the supergroup GTR. The lockdown enforced by the 2020 global pandemic has proven to be a particularly creative period for Hackett. He began by releasing Selling England by the Pound & Spectral Mornings: Live at Hammersmith, a live recording of 2019's hugely successful tour celebrating that Genesis classic together with the 40th anniversary of one of his most-loved solo albums. Lockdown also gave Hackett the opportunity to write and record two new studio albums, the UK Classical Chart hit Under A Mediterranean Sky and the forthcoming Surrender of Silence. But even though the show's title is a nod to all you Metal Church fans out there, the boys managed to avoid the dark (see what we did there?) and instead chose another ecelctic selection of albums spanning two decades. Leading the charge is Steve with the first of what he considers to be Genesis's holy trinity of albums, 1971's Nursery Cryme. Richard fast forwards to 1985 and adds a neo-gothic hue to proceedings by picking Love from The Cult. “The Journey Isn’t Finished Yet" Steve Hackett is indeed one of the true musical masters. The London born guitarist got his start in two short lived bands—Canterbury Glass and Quiet World, but his tenure in Genesis is what catapulted him into the spotlight. Hackett played on six of the legendary bands’ albums, including Nursery Cryme and Selling England By The Pound. He left Genesis in 1977 and from there, Hackett put out a series of adventurous, innovative and dazzling solo albums, including Spectral Mornings and Bay Of Kings. Hackett’s influence is vast and just to give you an idea of who his playing inspired—Queen’s Brian May Rush’s Alex Lifeson and Eddie Van Halen have all name-checked Hackett as a massive influence. As for his playing, getting into the technical brilliance of his revelatory use of two handed tapping and sweep picking might be the subject of its own podcast. The fact is, Steve Hackett plays with dexterity, depth and finesse--his precision is almost supernatural and his command of his instrument is peerless. He’s a big fan of Bach and would probably think we're overdoing it by saying he’s like Bach, but he is. He’s a master, he’s an innovator and he’s one of the great composers not only of our time, but of any time. Bach-like, for sure. His new album Under a Mediterranean sky is an all acoustic affair and it’s a straight up stunner— elegant, lush and utterly riveting. In this conversation Hackett talks to Alex about the brilliance of Jimi Hendrix, his admiration of Mark Knopfler and how working with Peter Gabriel affected his playing. He also talks about what area he feels least comfortable in as a guitar player, how rehearsal and performance differ and why it’s important to take chances.

I saw Genesis twice. Once in 1980, and then the next year. As I had worn out the grooves of Seconds Out, their live record from 1977, I somehow expected a duplication of the same, which meant playing some of those wonderful tracks from The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. I remember them doing lots of tracks off of the album Duke, which was fine, but the next year, when Abacab came out, it was, I knew, time to move on to other things.  The main line-up of Genesis during their glory days was Peter Gabriel, Mike Rutherford, Tony Banks, Steve Hackett, and Phil Collins.  Rutherford and Banks wrote "Squonk". Tony Banks wrote "Mad Man Moon" and "One For The Vine".  For chrissakes. So what happened? I dunno. Pay me and I'll tell you. I have an idea.    Peter Gabriel - A Wonderful Day In A One-Way World (1978) Any prog fan worth her salt recognizes that Chapman Stick being played by the most famous progenitor of the same, Tony Levin. Aside from being in King Crimson, he was in the movie "One-Trick Pony" with Paul Simon. But there's the Chapman Stick.  Anthony Phillips - Musical Box (demo) (1969) The opening track from the band's third album, Nursery Cryme, was, as you hear here, the birth-child of Anthony Phillips.  Anthony Phillips - Um & Aargh (1979) The drummer is Michael Giles, the drummer for King Crimson's first two albums. King Crimson's family tree, especially in the Prog world, is deep and wide.  Brand X - Nuclear Burn (1976) Phil Collins side-project that started off in the Mahavishnu-Chick Corea vein of Electric Jazz, but, like everything Phil Collins touched, devolved into pure pop.  Flaming Youth - Mars and Jupiter (1969) Phil Collins' pre-Genesis band recorded one album, Ark 2, a concept album about "the evacuation from a dying Earth". It's not bad. I think lots of these bands in the early days of Prog were trying to resolve Sgt. Pepper and The Beatles' affection for and use of old Music hall tropes with Robert Fripp's dexterity and distortion.  Genesis - A Winter's Tale (1968) This single pre-dates their debut album, From Genesis To Revelation (1969) Genesis - Hair on the Arms and Legs (1967) Genesis - It's Yourself (1976) B-side of "Ripples". There's a section that sounds like "Los Endos" as if it were meant to be a segue of sorts. this is from the Trick of the Tail sessions, the first album after Peter Gabriel left. It's a great record.  Genesis - One-Eyed Hound (1968) Genesis is a band with lots of pre-fame rarities that are worthy of a listen, if only for Gabriel's authoritative voice. Their first album sold 650 copies. Genesis - Patricia (1967) Genesis - Shepherd (1970) Genesis - The Day The Light Went Out (1978) B-side of the "Many Too Many" single.  Genesis - Try a Little Sadness (1967) Tony Banks is a more prominent backing vocalist on these early sides. Good? Bad?  Genesis - Inside and Out (1978) The Spot The Pigeon EP was released when we would have bought a Genesis Taxidermy Kit if we had the money. But the more I heard it, the more I realized that there was a really fundamental shift in the basic tenets of one of my favorite bands. According to Wikipedia: "The song was performed several times on the Wind & Wuthering tour in 1977. The first section, "Inside", concerns a man who is wrongfully imprisoned of rape. The second section "Out", is an instrumental passage that represents the man's freedom." Mike Rutherford - Hideaway (1982) Mike Rutherford sings with the inflections of Phil Collins and the pipes of a drunken Dennis Wilson. Some of the drums on this album by Stewart Copeland. They were on the same polo team. The same polo team. The same fucking polo team.  Peter Gabriel - Moribund the Burgermeister (1977) Nothing but quality from this great. The more I listen the more I realize that he was the heart and soul of that group. Genesis was a different, much less chance-taking group when he left. They must have known this when they heard this album the first time.  Peter Gabriel - Biko (1980) Phil Collins played drums on this record, but if you listen, there are no cymbals on the entire thing.  Peter Gabriel - No Self Control (1980) Robert Fripp appears. He of King Crimson. See? I never said Phil Collins was not a master. He is and was. But the Genesis that old people like me love is the one with this guy sitting in the studio and saying "Why not?" "No cymbals. Why not?" Robert Fripp appears on the album. He of King Crimson. See? Phil Collins - Tomorrow Never Knows (1981) From his first solo album, which marked the beginning of the subsumption of the entire pop landscape in the '80s.  Robert Fripp - Here Comes The Flood (1979) PG on lead vocals. Steve Hackett - Tigermoth (1979) Mike Rutherford - Time And Time Again (1980) Released two solo records, and then formed Mike and the Mechanics.  Tony Banks - A Curious Feeling (1979) In the words of the Mighty Lew, why are all the solo albums by the two main Genesis songwriters so bland and safe? Could it be David Hentschel's ever-repeating production tricks? He says it's all down to chemistry. I honestly think that the core had the feeling there wasn't anything they couldn't do. And when people started leaving, that precious balance dissipated and mutated.  Tony Banks - This Is Love (1983)  Genesis - That's Me! (1969) Genesis - Supper's Ready (coda) (1972) I am saying this because it's my show and I want to tell you. After Peter Gabriel sings "The new Jerusalem..." the band plays the coda chords for a while. If you own the original vinyl version, you might listen to the fade-out. There's a bass pedal mistake at the very end that was corrected when they mixed it for CD release.

“Out to Sea” is the debut Instrumental Progressive Rock Album by Fernando Perdomo, guitarist and bassist of the Dave Kerzner Band. The album draws inspiration from classic 70s Art Rock albums by the likes of Steve Hackett, Peter Banks, Steve Howe, and Jan Akkerman. Acclaimed artist Paul Whitehead painted the cover image. Other covers by Whitehead include “Trespass,” “Nursery Cryme,” and “Foxtrot” by Genesis. While all instruments on the record were played Fernando, save one drum track, he has put together a stellar group to perform the music of “Out To Sea” live.   “Out To Sea” was a pre-release on Cruise To The Edge 2018, a progressive rock concert cruise headlined by the band Yes, where Fernando played with the Dave Kerzner Band alongside Kerzner, Derek Cintron, Roger Houdaille, vocalists Durga and Lorelei McBroom (Pink Floyd), and special guests Randy McStine (The Fringe), John Wesley (Porcupine Tree), Steve Rothery (Marillion), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Harry Waters (Roger Waters), Gabriel Agudo (Bad Dreams) as well as Geoff Downes, Jon Davison, and Billy Sherwood of Yes. Fernando also played guitar in a special tribute to John Wetton with Kerzner and Thijs Van Leer of Focus. On previous performances on Cruise To The Edge, Fernando accompanied Sonja Kristina (Curved Air) and an all-star line up of progressive rock musicians in Dave Kerzner Band's tribute to the late Greg Lake of Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
