The Sound Chaser Progressive Rock Podcast is on the air. The show this time is a special review of albums that made the Official Progressive Albums Chart. I also have an In Memoriam feature to commemorate Moody Blues keyboardist Mike Pinder. All that, plus news of tours and releases on Sound Chaser. Official Charts is the company in the UK that keeps track of singles and album sales in the UK, the equivalent of Billboard in the US. In 2015, Official Charts started a new feature, the Progressive albums chart, which started as a monthly listing in September of that year. Charts cover a one-month period, listing the top 30 sellers in that category for that month. Because the charts simply rate according to sales, albums that make the charts include not only new music, but also reissues of old music. Thus, you will hear in the sample in this show a mix of the newer and older music. Also, I have not limited the selections to chart toppers, but have included music that peaked in different locations of the charts. Playlist1. STEVE HACKETT Interview - Legendary PROGRESSIVE ROCK Guitarist for GENESIS and GTR

Matt and Rob sit down with the legendary progressive rock guitarist, Steve Hackett formerly of GENESIS and GTR Steve talks about his current tour (recently winding down) called FOXTROT AT FIFTY, what the term progressive means, what John Lennon said about Genesis, his incredible new album "The Circus and the Nightwhale" and more. We had 30 minutes to talk to Steve which in itself is incredible since he was in the middle of a tour of the US. ******** JUST A LITTLE BIT ABOUT STEVE HACKETT: Steve Hackett is renowned as an immensely talented and innovative rock musician. He was lead guitarist with Genesis as part of their classic line up with Gabriel, Collins, Banks and Rutherford, that produced acclaimed albums such as Selling England by the Pound (a favourite of John Lennon). With Steve's extraordinary versatility in both his electric guitar playing and his composing, he involves influences from many genres, including Jazz, World Music and Blues. He is equally adept in his classical albums that include renditions of pieces by composers from Bach to Satie, his own acoustic guitar compositions that have gained the admiration of many, including Yehudi Menuhin, and ambitious guitar/ orchestra albums such as A Midsummer Night's Dream, recorded with the Royal Philharmonic.   With Genesis, Steve's guitar playing produced some of the most memorable moments, from the sensitivity of his acoustic sound on Horizons and Blood on the Rooftops to the dramatic rock guitar solos of Firth of Fifth and Fountain of Salmacis. As he embarked on his solo career he developed his exceptional range, pushing musical boundaries into exciting areas, inventing new sounds and also techniques such as 'tapping'. His solo career went from strength to strength and the mid eighties not only saw the hit single Cell 151, but also the Steve Hackett and Steve Howe super group GTR, highly successful in America. ************ You can find STEVE at hackettsongs.com, Facebook and Instagram (@stevehackettofficial)  Be sure to listen to his incredible new album THE CIRCUS AND THE NIGHTWHALE! ************ KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts.     If you go to www.linktr.ee/knowgoodmusic you can find all the links to the podcast platforms we are on.    Visit our YouTube Channel where you can see video promos from some of our interviews.  Just search "know good music"."

The Grammy-winning bluesman followed that up with a gracious response: “We all get it from somewhere.”That “somewhere” is a muse that molds every guitarist's individualistic style and voice. For example, Eddie Van Halen shook the world and confounded guitarists with his explosive two-hand, finger-tapped “Eruption” performance on Van Halen's 1978 debut. Yngwie Malmsteen put listeners in awe with his dazzlingly clean and swift sweep arpeggios. They both became synonymous with those talented techniques, and were heralded as pioneering groundbreakers. But where did they get the ideas from before expressing and executing them it in their signature style? Both took a page out Steve Hackett's prog-rock playbook. Hackett's two-hand tapping technique can be heard in the early '70s on Genesis' albums Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot. Hackett's sweep picking was first heard on the 1973 Selling England by the Pound track “Dancing with the Moonlit Knight.” Those contributions alone should've been enough to land Hackett in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. (His combined work on six Genesis albums in six years earned him a slot in 2010.) On top of that smashing success and influence, he's recorded nearly 30 solo albums—ranging from prog-rock and blues to world and classical—over a dozen live albums, and even traded licks with Steve Howe in the short-lived supergroup GTR. Hackett might not be recalled like the other guitar greats, but without his shoulders to stand on, those first-name giants might not have shone as bright. Hackett's headlining Ryman Auditorium tour stop in late October 2023 celebrated the 50th anniversary of Genesis' Foxtrot—a seminal, prog-rock tour de force that was recorded when singer Peter Gabriel, bassist/guitarist Mike Rutherford, drummer Phil Collins, keyboardist Tony Banks, and Hackett were in their early 20s. Before the show, PG's Chris Kies was invited onstage to go over the minimal-but-mighty setup used by Hackett. First tech Vince O'Malley detailed a Fernandes goldtop (once owned by Gary Moore) with its limitless Sustainer circuit and a treasured nylon-string Alvarez built by master luthier Kazuo Yairi in the 1970s. Then Hackett himself joined the fun and plugged his Fernandes into his pedalboard to show off all the sounds, tones, and colors he requires to honor his days in Genesis.Shop the Rig:D'Addario Pro-Arte' Nylon Light Tension EJ43 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/jrGvL5Engl Powerball - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/VmvG53Marshall 1960A 4x12 Cabinet - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/XYvVeaCelestion G12T-75W Speakers - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/9gjXYyTech 21 SansAmp GT2 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/zN57VMBoss PS-6 Harmonist - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/DKZ2NnEHX Attack Decay - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/1rMmNdFishman Aura - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/g1e2EBDigiTech Mosaic - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/k01mqNIbanez TS9 Tube Screamer - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/EKVmjeDigiTech Whammy WH-5 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/q4LBROTC Electronic Flashback 2 X4 Delay - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/B0V6MLMXR EVH Phase 90 - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/vNbBJjVoodoo Lab Pedal Power 2 Plus - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/LXm31VDunlop 105Q Cry Baby Bass Wah - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/Gm4vNkRadial ProDI Passive Direct Box - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/PyqVbNErnie Ball Extra Slinkys - https://sweetwater.sjv.io/ZQvZA1Full Rig Details: https://bit.ly/SteveHackettRRSubscribe to PG's Channel: http://bit.ly/SubscribePGYouTubeWin Guitar Gear:...

On this week's episode, we explore the 1973 LP by one of progressive rock's most interesting (and entertaining) bands, Selling England by the Pound by Genesis. Considered by many to be the best album of the Peter Gabriel era of Genesis, it is definitely the most accessible, and even gave the band their first Top 40 single int he UK with “I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) which peaked just shy of the Top 20.  The overall theme of the album laments the Americanization and commercialization of English culture. The songs are full of vivid imagery, played by outstanding musicians, and sung by one of the best voices in rock. A thing that sets Genesis apart from other progressive rock bands of the time is their ability to make complex music that is not showy. Gabriel's vocals adds a level of soul that is absent from other bands of the genre.  All of this makes for a compelling listen, and puts Selling England by the Pound up there with the greatest progressive rock albums ever released.

As the Nicks turn their attention towards the album many consider the band's critical peak, they discuss their own levels of Anglophilia and talk about the happenings in Canada & the world in October 1973 (Rush have begun to release singles!) before looking at Selling England by the Pound. They discuss the band's statement on old Britain being lost as well as the results of the the band's crunch for material and the pop hit track that gives the podcast its name! Kyke Serrano nos presta ‘Selling England by the Pound' de Genesis. Episode 39: ‘Selling England By The Pound' by Genesis (1973)‘I Know What I Like (In My Prog)'Concerned with the rise of Americanism in 70s Britain, Genesis would take a line from the Labour party's manifesto and explore some serious folk and cultural elements in their fifth studio album. 1973's ‘Selling England By The Pound' was a very serious contender, musically, in the Prog/Hard Rock categories, but also continued the whimsical theatrics and drama from several of their previous instalments - combining both elements to create one of Genesis' most revered and successful Prog albums.Episode 39 Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0Hi886kYI3vmmXEPKib6Hp?si=da0bd1e3d1694030LONG LIVE ROCK 'N' ROLL- Follow the Podcast on Social Media: https://linktr.ee/longlivernrpod - Get in touch and/or leave us a review: longliverocknrollpodcast@gmail.com - Podcast Music by GeriArt, NaturesEye, astrofreq, Twisterium from Pixabay - Podcast Art by Ross Davidson (@ross_feelshame)

Genesis Redone The 2021 COVID lockdowns meant we couldn't get together to record.  This really impacted the sound quality on a couple of episodes, particularly the one about Genesis (Season 1 Ep 15)So, we've re-recorded that episode.  The key facts are the same, but because our podcasts are a conversation and we don't work from a tight script, it's basically a new episode.  If you've listened to the original episode already, you might like to see how different this one is.  We think you'll be impressed.  *************Genesis is regarded by many as one of the most exceptional bands ever produced by England, and never better than their 5-man line-up in the early 70's.  Both Genesis and Steve Hackett completed COVID-delayed tours this year, so it's a great time to discover (or remember!) some of the finest music you'll ever encounter.   In particular, we talk about two sublime albums, Selling England by the Pound, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.   “Selling England......” contains “Firth of Fifth”, a 9-minute-long ensemble piece with fluid guitar, delicate piano & synth parts, flute & vocal pieces, underpinned by a strong rhythm section in Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford.  It's regarded by many to be the finest single work by Genesis!  The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, regarded by Genesis fans as their best complete work, is a complex story targeted at the US, with many American cultural references mixed with mythical and supernatural elements. It contains both their most delicate AND hard-edged pieces, still sounding fresh decades later.  ************************* Oh, by the way, we're taking a short break to travel around Australia. We'll be back with a bunch of new episodes on October 16.  Stay with us – there's some great stuff coming up!  References:  Genesis, Selling England by the Pound, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, Ramones, Mr Mercedes, Rick Rubin, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, Steve Hackett, David Bowie, Elton John, Brian Eno"Pet Sematary" - The Ramones - from Mr MercedesGenesis PlayListEggSteve Hackett Firth of FifthSledgehammer - Peter Gabriel (awesome film clip)

Finalist #10 in the Book Review Contest https://astralcodexten.substack.com/p/your-book-review-the-righteous-mind [This is one of the finalists in the 2022 book review contest. It's not by me - it's by an ACX reader who will remain anonymous until after voting is done, to prevent their identity from influencing your decisions. I'll be posting about one of these a week for several months. When you've read them all, I'll ask you to vote for a favorite, so remember which ones you liked - SA] Introduction I didn't read The Righteous Mind for a long time after I knew about it. This was partly because I don't get through much in the way of new reading material. A friend of mine told me yesterday that he'd read something like 130 new books this year. That was on February 20th. I've read one, and it was The Righteous Mind. Another friend releases Spotify playlists every Friday of the greatest hits from the many new albums he's listened to that week. I've listened to one new album this year. It was Selling England by the Pound, which he recommended. It was my first foray into Genesis and I loved it. I now have to keep telling him that, no, I haven't listened to any more Genesis or Peter Gabriel since then, but I'm sure I'll get round to it within the year. This is to make the point that I'm starting from a low base rate of reading things. I still think I put off reading The Righteous Mind for unusually long, though, given how interesting I find the subject matter. The reason, I think, is that I sort of felt like it wouldn't be very interesting, because I'd kind of know and agree with all of it already. Given how slowly I absorb new books, I like them to either be challenging, or a new and informative look at things I just don't know very much about yet. I don't mean to come across as some sort of sage of intellectual piety and good habits of mind who scorns the comforting embrace of being validated. I read plenty of political bloggers that I mostly agree with! I just don't tend to use books for that.

British guitarist Steve Hackett has thrilled audiences for decades with his epic electric guitar work, first as a member of the Peter Gabriel-fronted version of Genesis and since then as a prolific solo artist. The influence Steve has had on other musicians can't be understated. He is considered to be one of the greatest guitarists of all time, is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, not to mention being a highly charming man of considerable intellect.  Steve is now embarking on a world tour performing the hugely successful Genesis album Seconds Out and then hot on its heels, a 25 date UK tour, Foxtrot at Fifty, to mark the 50th anniversary of the legendary Genesis album, Foxtrot. Steve talks about his passion behind his latest albums: the beautiful acoustic Under A Mediterranean Sky and the heavy rock Surrender of Silence as well as sharing how he achieves his distinctive two-handed tapping and sweep picking styles and how eternity wouldn't be long enough to play music. The tracks featured are: Can-Utility and the Coastliners from Genesis' album Foxtrot, Dancing With The Moonlit Knight by Genesis from Selling England by The Pound; Mdina from Steve's album Under A Mediterranean Sky; and Natalie from Surrender of Silence. Steve Hackett joined Genesis at the beginning of 1971 and gained an international reputation as the guitarist in the band's classic line-up alongside Peter Gabriel, Tony Banks, Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins. Hackett's intricate guitar work was a key element of Genesis' albums from Nursery Cryme (1971) to Wind And Wuthering (1977) including the classic Selling England By The Pound. After leaving Genesis at the end of 1977, Hackett's solo career, which now spans more than 30 albums, has demonstrated his extraordinary versatility with both electric and acoustic guitar. Hackett is renowned as both an immensely talented and innovative rock musician and a virtuoso classical guitarist and composer and this was recognized in 2010 when he was inducted into the Rock Hall Of Fame. He has also worked alongside Steve Howe of YES in the supergroup GTR. The lockdown enforced by the 2020 global pandemic has proven to be a particularly creative period for Hackett. He began by releasing Selling England by the Pound & Spectral Mornings: Live at Hammersmith, a live recording of 2019's hugely successful tour celebrating that Genesis classic together with the 40th anniversary of one of his most-loved solo albums. Lockdown also gave Hackett the opportunity to write and record two new studio albums, the UK Classical Chart hit Under A Mediterranean Sky and the forthcoming Surrender of Silence. Paul talks about "Sgt Pepper" and how Jimi Hendrix paid the ultimate compliment to The Beatles by performing the title track live in London, a few days after its release. This week, we'll talk about how great a band Genesis was before they splintered after "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway" in the mid-70's. Genesis – a 70's band generally classified as “progressive” - have been described b6y Jon Michaud, in The New Yorker as “Peter Gabriel dressed in a flower costume while singing ten- and twenty-minute songs that sounded like excerpts from Gilbert and Sullivan operas as reimagined by Lewis Carroll” .We talk about their progression from a group of private school boys into one of the most highly-regarded bands of all time, with an extraordinary degree of virtuoso skill across the board.  In particular, we talk about two albums, Selling England by the Pound, and The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.   One song we both love is “Firth of Fifth”, a wonderful ensemble piece.  Over 9 minutes long, with fluid guitar, delicate piano & synth parts, flute & vocal pieces, underpinned by a strong rhythm  section in Phil Collins and Mike Rutherford, it's regarded by many to be the finest single work by Genesis!  The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway  is often regarded by Genesis fans as their best complete work. A concept album, it's an immersive piece with a complex story featuring a load of mythical elements.  Unlike their earlier albums, this album was specially targeted at the US, with very many American cultural references, inspired by a 200-date tour they did to support Selling England by the Pound.   We talk about the origins of the "gated/distance mic" technique, used on Phil Collins' "In The Air Tonight", Bowie's "Heroes", and some of Peter Gabriel's most successful solo work.  With both Genesis and guitarist Steve Hackett mounting tours featuring the music from Genesis' early period, it's a great time to discover (or remember!) some of the finest music you'll ever encounter. For your listening:"Pet Sematary" - The Ramones - from Mr MercedesGenesis PlayListEggSteve Hackett Firth of FifthSledgehammer - Peter Gabriel (awesome film clip)

Genesis may have ruled the 80s as pop rock gurus but their roots are very progressive. With Peter Gabriel as their frontman and Steve Hackett providing extraordinary yet understated guitar work, Genesis forged some extremely creative music in the early- to mid-70s. Selling England By The Pound may be the high water mark for that incarnation of the band and is highlighted by masterful musicianship and the examination of what it means to be English in a fast changing world.

While some of the subtleties of British culture references require some work the group decides that this is a very strong album. Opinions are split on The Battle of Epping Forest but Firth of Fifth is a classic. Steve Hackett is renowned as an immensely talented and innovative rock musician. Steve Hackett After GTR Steve worked further with many renowned musicians such as Paul Carrick, Bonny Tyler, John Wetton and Brian May, who has credited Steve as an early influence. Steve went on to produce his hit album Genesis Revisited. He went even further back to his roots with Blues with a Feeling, whilst continuing to challenge his own 'horizons' with an amazingly eclectic mix of sounds, genres and a sense of the exotic that excites his many followers to this day. Recent albums have possessed a high level of sophistication, along with an ever-present powerful dynamic, from the dramatic and atmospheric darkness of Darktown and Wild Orchids to the colourful voyage through time and space of To Watch the Storms. 2009's Out Of The Tunnel's Mouth, written and recorded in the midst of domestic and professional upheaval, was released to an overwhelmingly positive response from fans and reviewers alike, many of them proclaiming it his best ever. Hot on the heels of OOTTM was Beyond the Shrouded Horizon released in 2011, which has easily received an equally enthusiastic response. In 2012 Steve collaborated with Chris Squire of Yes on the "Squackett" album A Life Within a Day. Steve's live electric gigs take his fans on an extraordinary journey drawn from a rich musical heritage. Perennial Genesis favourites such as the mighty Firth Of Fifth sit alongside solo classics, while more recent solo material is also included, demonstrating that Steve is an artist still at the very top of his game. Supported by some of the best musicians on the planet, Steve's unique guitar work remains the fulcrum on which this challenging and exhilarating show is balanced. Genesis' induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in March 2010 stands as a testament to the enduring qualities of their music. Steve has always held a torch for the classic Genesis music. His Genesis Revisited II, a double CD, involves several iconic artists and contains many Genesis favourites. It was released in late October 2012. A Genesis Revisited worldwide tour in 2013 was followed by a Genesis Extended tour in 2014 and early 2015 due to popular demand… Never one to rest on his laurels, Steve continues to blaze a trail with new material and to be an exhilarating and groundbreaking artist. Following the success of his album Wolflight, his latest album The Night Siren gained even more notoriety, charting in several countries and reaching the top 30 in the UK charts. He tours worldwide. In February / March 2018 he will tour from North America to South America encompassing his whole career wit...
