Interview by Kris PetersTwo of the most essential things in life would have to be heavy metal and food. Hands down. No argument. But what is actually better than metal or eating? Combining the two together, which is exactly what Brett Hoag and James Pulli have done with their revolutionary, entertaining and informative show, Metal Mastication. Since 2023, Hoag and Pulli have been producing quality content, interviewing bands and artists while cooking up a storm with a personally selected favourite dish from the guest of the day.It is a novel and unique concept, and also the first of its kind, so it is no wonder the show has developed a cult following in America that promises to break through to the rest of the world at any time. Over the years, Metal Mastication has hosted David Ellefson, Jeff Young, Tony Macalpine and Steve Unger, with Unger's heat sensitive Breasts Of Fire recipe marking itself down in history as one of the most intense dishes ever created for television. The recipe was so good, in fact, that when HEAVY spoke with Metal Mastication earlier today, Unger made a special trip from his home base to Los Angeles just to run it through with us on this side of the world."Hell, Masticators and Metalheads in Australia, it's so good to be here with you guys," Hoag began the conversation, introducing the show as well as himself. "My name is Brett, and I host Metal Mastication. We are the only heavy metal interview show set in the kitchen. Where do the best conversations happen in your house, Kris?""The toilet?" HEAVY replied, before changing our answer to the kitchen."The kitchen, yeah, you're correct," Hoag laughed. "And so that's where the idea came from, and we've done 19 episodes. We have eight on our YouTube channel, and right now we are in the quarter-finals of the Colossus Favourite Chef 2025 competition. It benefits the James Beard Society, which brings equity and sustainability to professional kitchens. If we win this competition, it will allow us to buy a food truck and go to metal festivals as well. Now, say you're at a metal festival, and you're there to see Metal Church, for example. I know they're really huge in Australia, they're huge all over the world. So you see our food truck there, and you go, wow, that's fun. That's a cool logo, that's a cool purple truck. You walk up to get something, and behind the counter in the food truck is none other than Steve Unger, the bass player, the Metal Hall of Fame bass player from Metal Church."The session focused on the unique concept of blending heavy metal music with cooking, featuring discussions about the show's premise and a cooking demonstration. Brett highlighted the show's innovative format, which combines interviews with heavy metal musicians in a kitchen setting. Steve Unger discussed his signature dish, Breasts of Fire, and expressed enthusiasm for connecting with Australian fans. The conversation included humorous anecdotes about cooking and the challenges of using spicy ingredients, with Brett noting that all necessary ingredients are provided for guests to enhance their cooking experience.HEAVY inquired about the origins of the show, prompting Brett to recount how it began two years ago after discussions with Billy Sheehan about cooking on social media. He emphasized that while cooking is a component, the primary focus remains on interviews and conversations with guests, while Steve provided an update on Metal Church's hiatus while also discussing his involvement in other projects and more.Don't forget to vote for Brett and Metal Mastication here: https://favchef.com/2025/brett-Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

This week, we start a new series all about appreciating the shredded, gravelly, gritty, raspy pipes and throats of rock n' roll. We are focusing on lead singers who crafted truly special tones with their sandpapered delivery. Join us in celebrating these unique sets of pipes that set them apart from all the others. Anyone can scream, but only a few deliver gravel, grit & glory! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Our appreciation, this week, of rough and textured singing extends to all of the genres that we love. Kevin never realized how much this style of vocalizing had an impact on him until putting this whole thing together. This week on America's Podcast, we've got a lineup so heavy it might just be considered a gym day! Join us as we tackle the burning question: should we be bowing down at the altar of Metal Church or kicking back to watch football on Sundays? Spoiler alert: our guests Greg Naugle and Travis Perrotta are here to argue that neither activity should include wearing pants! We titled this episode “The Human Factor” because let's face it: we're all just humans trying to figure out if our Sundays should be filled with righteous riffs or touchdown celebrations. Can you have a mosh pit in front of the TV? And if you can, will someone please tell the neighbors? No spoilers on the tracks of the week—after all, we don't want to ruin the surprise of Marc picking “Fire And Rain” by Badlands, which is basically the soundtrack for those days you remember that you left the oven on…again. Mooger's choice, “Impact Is Imminent” by Exodus, sounds like the perfect anthem for your procrastination and potential future life choices. Meanwhile, Greg's picking “Another Day” by Fastway—not to be confused with “Another Day Without Coffee,” which is honestly just a crime. Travis is cruising down memory lane with “Starcarr Lane” by Alcatrazz, which probably has more nostalgia than your old high school yearbook! And Jerry wraps things up with “Nobody's Fault” by Testament, which should be the theme music for every time someone tries to blame you for something you clearly didn't do. So grab your air guitars, prepare your best headbangs, and remember: until next week, let the music do the talking and be as nice as a metalhead can be—meaning no heavy objects should be thrown, unless it's a perfectly good air guitar!

Norwegian black metal in the 1990s served as the soundtrack for murder, suicide, and the burning of churches dating to the medieval period across the country with the musicians themselves at the center of these crimes. Welcome back to The Great Metal Debate podcast. Today we're reviewing the latest release from Indian heavy thrash veterans Kryptos titled Decimator, which is released on July 5th through AFM Records. Founded back in 1998, Decimator is their 7th full-length album. Let's check out this new album Decimator and see how it stacks up. The tracklist begins with “Sirens Of Steel” which debuts in epic fashion before transitioning into galloping riffs. There's a touch of thrashy-ness here, but is more like thrash-influenced true metal than a thrash band that wears its trad metal roots on its sleeve. The guitars are very forward in this one, with lots of lead accents throw in throughout, sometimes more and sometimes less successfully. The vocals are thrash-ish, with the lyrics rasped out in lightly goblinesque fashion by singer and guitarist Nolan Lewis. “Fall To The Spector's Gave” sets a rollicking sonic core with strong riffing and a sing-songy verse. There's some good stuff – I really enjoyed the guitar lead break as well as the vigorour climax. I just could've used a bit more variability in the vocal melody, which is extremely repetitive in its presentation. A small change up there could have improved the song immeasurably. A cheesy 80s metal intro transitioning into a generic 80s metal riff is what greets us for “Turn Up The Heat,” the next track in the listing. That comes across as harsher than I mean – in some ways I've giving a compliment. This is every bit as engaging and dynamic a track as one might routinely find on an Accept or Metal Church album back in the day when those bands were fresh and relevant. Similarly constructed albeit a bit different in the details of its execution is “Electricity.” This is perhaps a cautionary tale to artists that when you give a song such an energetic title you'd better be certain the music delivers in like manner. It is a fine song – a mid-paced rocker that has the nostalgic feel of some metal anthems of oldGood riffs, but an underwhelming chorus structure. Track 5 “Solaris” is a soft guitar piece that is only slightly past a minute and a half in length, segueing into the title track “Decimator.” I get some definite Painkiller-era Judas Priest vibes on “Decimator,” with the pulsating double bass and plunging sonic guitar dives. Unfortunately, the riffing is somewhat stale and repetitive. There's no progression or twists here – a minute in and you basically can predict how the remainder of the song will sound. With “In The Shadow Of The Blade” we find one of the album's most compelling melodies and some nice interplay between the rhythm and lead guitar lines. It's somewhat paint-by-numbers in the song construction, but the simple approach works well here. Yet again I yearn for a bit more variability in the vocal presentation. If the singer could have gone up even half an octave on the final verse it would have truly made the track explode. Next up is “Pathfinder” which has a pleasant if predictable primary riff and some nice, timely tempo changes. However, I thought the composition missed opportunities in the transitions between verses, choruses, and breaks, with those changeovers seeming to happen somewhat ham-handedly. Another track that was fine for what it is, but could have been better. The album concludes with “We Are The Night,” a mid-paced track that almost has a 70s rock mood to it, or at least NWOBHM feel. The lead break is really tasty, and the riffing throughout is enjoyable. This might be my favorite track on the album, leading me to wish the band had given me more of this approach and, by inference, gone with less of what I'd heard earlier. Ultimately I'll say that Decimator is worth checking out. You won't hate what you hear, but I don't know if many will love it either. I'm giving Decimator a 5 out of 10 rating. You can purchase Decimator from AFM Records. Follow them on social media and be sure to watch for the band going out on tour soon to support the release.
Dan Sindel is truly a “unique” and “one of a kind” artist like no other out there in music land. Dan's songwriting features a multi-layered approach to recording guitars and vocals that integrates myriads of styles and genres into a hard rocking experience streamlined for mass appeal. Unpopular Music for Popular People Vol.1 is Dan's debut (5 song) EP and features the radio friendly tracks; STEPPING STONE, RULE THE WORLD and ALL DUE REPSECT as well as two “6 minute deep cut” tracks; EDGE OF ETERNITY and SAY GOODBYE which would satisfy anyone with a love for classic rock /progressive hard rock/heavy metal with their technical rhythmic changes, orchestrated guitars and solid vocal production. The Los Angeles based singer/songwriter/guitarist takes his musical upbringing of 60's and 70's pop songs and classic rock, 80's-90's metal and all things current and mixes up slightly atypical artists (think: Alice in Chains meet The Byrds or perhaps the aggression of Metallica infused with Blue Oyster Cult, The BEATLES or ELO) to create those unique melodies and harmonies. Dan says, “To me, the best parts of a song are the hooks and melodies, whether vocal or instrumental they have to catch the listener's ear and be extraordinarily memorable.”As a survivor of the legendary 80's LA Heavy Metal scene, Dan has shared the stage with some of the biggest names in the rock and metal music world (ACCEPT, SAXON, KING DIAMOND, RACER X, WENDY O. WILLIAMS, ARMORED SAINT, METAL CHURCH, FLOTSAM & JETSAM, GRIM REAPER, HED-PE, MUSHROOMHEAD and HELMET being but a few) but he'd rather not be looked at as “just a metal guy” as he refuses to be typecast and limited by musical genre.“Dan states: “It is the responsibility of a true artist to find his own voice and represent the thoughts and feelings that one has and to share it in a way that hopefully does not simply mirror someone else's work, to capture the spirit and intent of the artists vision is the essence of art itself.”Unpopular Music for Popular People Vol.1 is absolute proof that bringing influences from several different musical genres can co-exist in one finely tuned package and is available on all popular streaming platforms as well as his accompaniment videos on Youtube.APPLE MUSIC: https://music.apple.com/us/artist/dan-sindel/261257155SPOTIFY: https://open.spotify.com/artist/12JOM4gAm4nuaXD8GXLW3xAMAZON: https://www.amazon.com/music/player/artists/B0019DMEM4/dan-sindelYOUTUBE: https://www.youtube.com/@halipinoWWW: http://dansindel.comBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-unplugged-totally-uncut--994165/support.

WILLIAMS, ARMORED SAINT, METAL CHURCH, FLOTSAM & JETSAM, GRIM REAPER, HED-PE, MUSHROOMHEAD and HELMET being but a few) but he'd rather not be looked at as “just a metal guy” as he refuses to be typecast and limited by musical genre.“Dan states: “It is the responsibility of a true artist to find his own voice and represent the thoughts and feelings that one has and to share it in a way that hopefully does not simply mirror someone else's work, to capture the spirit and intent of the artists vision is the essence of art itself.”Unpopular Music for Popular People Vol.1 is absolute proof that bringing influences from several different musical genres can co-exist in one finely tuned package and is available on all popular streaming platforms as well as his accompaniment videos on Youtube.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.

Exciting times ahead. Now, let's talk about the tracks of the week. We have Jerry's pick, "Asatru" by Satans Taint. Metal Mike's choice is "1916" by Sabaton. Marc brings us "Pig" by Overkill. Kurdt VanderhoofHe jokingly calls himself the other “Kurdt” from Aberdeen, WA, but as the founding guitarist of Metal Church, he's made his own mark as one of heavy metal's most enduring champions. Kurdt Vanderhoof joins us to discuss the most recent (and excellent) Metal Church album, “Congregation of Annihilation;” his AC/DC-style rock band, Hall Aflame; his prog-rock project, Presto Ballet; and the recently published Metal Church book, “Beyond the Black.” We also learn the party-hardy origins of the name Metal Church. You're gonna love this guy! Created and Produced by Jared Tuten
Originally formed in the thrash metal mecca known as The Bay Area a year before Metallica was even a thing (shortly before relocating to the Tri-County, metropolitan Seattle, Washington realm), METAL CHURCH continues to bless congregations of faithful metal fans with their own unique brand of thrash infused progressive power metal which has relentlessly persisted and triumphed for more than four decades. While we acknowledge “we can't judge entire albums” by just a sample of songs from each one, there's no denying the consistent sonic salvation found throughout the entire METAL CHURCH discography. Find out which riff may have influenced the mighty Slayer and discover the reason why turning on the blacklights in the Bunkerpoon bears a striking resemblance to a planetarium. Get ready for a “homework assignment” (thanks to an elusively familiar riff which earwormed us into a fit of obsessed madness), behold “the ultimate insult” for “those of you who don't know how to count in Roman” (or do math), be sure to NOT get your burger “bunless” (because “the meat lives between the buns”) and JOIN US as we go INSIDE THE METAL with Seattle's saints of thrash infused progressive power metal, METAL CHURCH. We're back this week with our long-awaited Best of 2023 episode and there's a lot for you to wrap your ears around. In a time that many seem all-too-thrilled to declare the death of a genre, there was an increasing number of great albums and songs released in 2023. Plenty of new material from veteran artists was released in 2023 including albums by The Rolling Stones, Alice Cooper, Overkill, Dokken, Halestorm, Prong, Metallica, Metal Church, Extreme among others. Lots of newer bands were forging their own path last year with new music such as Rock City Machine Co, Ravenstine, Seven Ravens, Iron Void, Crown Lands, Fortune Child and more. Other notable releases for 2023 including music from Marvelous 3, Wolfgang Van Halen, and Halestorm. Did any of these albums make our lists? You'll have to listen to find out. Chris and Aaron each count down their Top 10 releases from the year that was 2023. We hope you enjoy and share YOUR choices in the comments! This week we continue the discussion that we started at the end of our last show; with our admiration of the almighty power of the guitar and the guitar hero! This time around we are going to play guitarists, or guitar passages or leads in songs that caught our ears at some point in our lives that made us truly stop and listen. It's not always about the training, finesse, dexterity, or speed a player has or even the style of music or song that is being played. If you are into guitar and the sound of strings being plucked and bent then you know… It's just something you feel deep down that gets to your heart and soul! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. This week we discuss all three. Get out your old Guitar World and Guitar Player mags and flip the pages as we discuss some of the most amazing fingers to ever touch a fretboard! Throughout the year, I attended a variety of live performances, including shows by Emperor, I Am Morbid, Incantation, Extreme, Living Colour, Hanabie, Archspire, Ingested, Triple Kill, Orpheus Omega, Halo Effect, and Misery, amongst many others. I discuss each show and summarise the performance and why it was noteworthy. The podcast featured engaging conversations with prominent figures across heavy metal and beyond. I had the pleasure of hosting many Cradle of fIlth alums: Paul Ryan, Chris Bell, Nigel Wingrove, Mike Exeter, James McIlroy, and, notably, Sarah Jezebel Deva. There were conversations with Scott Edgar from Misery, Phil Soussan, Jesper Strömblad, the Tardy brothers from Obituary, Jason Bonham, Jamie Stinson AKA Astennu, Blitz from Overkill, Mille Petrozza, David Ellefson, Marc from Metal Church, Scott from Carnifex, Dave Coutts and Mark Dunn, Eric from The Amenta, Dave Haley and many, many more. I discuss why each episode is essential. In terms of literature, my collection expanded with the addition of the Silverchair Book and Tana Douglas's roadie memoir. So I have something to say about these books. Regarding musical releases, several notable albums caught my attention. There's a summary of each, and I explain why the alums are worthy. Suffocation's "Hymns from the Apocrypha" highlighted Terrence Hobb's consistent musical prowess. Overkill's "Scorched" reaffirmed their enduring impact in the world of metal. "When Angels Kill" by Fifth Angel impressed with Ken Mary's drumming finesse. Incantation's "Unholy Deification" offered doom-tinged death metal at its best. Cadaver's "The Age of the Offended" featured a strong death metal statement with Ronni Le Tekrø. Sadus returned with "The Shadow Inside," showcasing Darren Travis's dedication. Wes Hauch's "Death is But a Door (EP)" demonstrated Wes Hauch's guitar virtuosity. Grand Cadaver's "Deities of Deathlike Sleep" delivered old-school Stockholm death metal. The Amenta's "Plague of Locus" showcased their take on classic covers. Werewolves and Faustian, featuring Matt Wilcock, offered creative and competent riff-heavy music. Additionally, I've compiled an eligibility list for future discussions, which includes Cyhra, Doro, Till the Dirt, Sylosis, Svalbard, Cryptopsy, Watain, Cavalera Brothers, Immortal, Alice Cooper, Cannibal Corpse, Shepherds Rein, Steven Wilson, AETERNUS, Aeons Abyss, Kataklysm, Ringworm, and Carnifex. In conclusion, 2023 was a year filled with remarkable music and insightful conversations about extreme music. I remain committed to providing a serious and thoughtful perspective on the genre, and I look forward to continuing this journey in the future. Thank you for being a part of the musical exploration! Have a great Christmas and even better 2024! Andrew McK.
