Put all the video files in there (in nested folder structure if you like), then get VLC (or other players) to reindex from that folder, not the first. So Google Photos (and the Android system) ignores "Ted's Videos" (because of the .nomedia file in that folder) and the thumbnails are not littered through the Google Photos App. And VLC (and any other Media Playing app) is happy once pointed to Ted's Videos (and sub-folders) and indexed again. The trick was nesting one folder in another and putting the .nomedia file in the first one, then flowing the nest of folders further down the tree.
