Our guest is Sheri Salata. She's a writer, producer and podcaster. Her current adventures are an evolution of her twenty+ year career with Oprah Winfrey. Over that time she served as executive producer on The Oprah Winfrey Show as well as co-president of Harpo Studios and The Oprah Winfrey Network. But after years of telling other people's makeover stories and featuring so many inspiring journeys... Sheri decided to “produce” her own life transformation. Out of that… she wrote her bestselling book, “The Beautiful NO - and other tales of trial, transcendence and transformation” which beautifully and authentically chronicles her journey to find LOVE for life in new ways! So… we're talking about ALL of THAT! MORE ABOUT THIS EPISODE: When Sheri decided to write her book, “The Beautiful NO - and other tales of trial, transcendence and transformation,” she knew it meant digging into her past successes and setbacks, excavating the lessons she learned, and boldly reimagining her future. Some might say it's equal parts “cautionary tale,” mixed in with some stand up comedy, solid life strategies AND a really loud “Middle-of-Your-Life Rebel Yell!” It's a powerful and fun example of someone giving themself permission to choose to dream bigger, to think differently and to do even more of what they were put on the planet to do! And to lay some things down and boldly enter into a new season on her own terms! That's why I'm so excited to get to this conversation! LISTENER LIGHTNING ROUND QUESTIONS! Stephanie asked: She's held some impressive positions… how does she stay creative at all levels and what word(s) of advice does she have for staying creative? Tracey asked: (She can't wait to hear the episode btw...) I'd ask what does Sheri think is one the most important things to dream… think… or do for a woman who is reinventing herself in the middle-of-life? Mona asked: What was one of her most important Ah-ha moments as a leader? Helen asked: Her work with Oprah was so demanding. What's one key for motivating staff in really busy times? Wow. What a conversation. What did YOU think? I want to hear from YOU! Leave a comment below and let me know. One of the things that really stood out to me was Sheri's willingness to reinvent herself. To go from a “typist” and a manager of a 7-Eleven to running one of the most successful media brands of all time… to then giving herself permission to do it again in THIS season. Yup… I loved that. It's such a good reminder that it's never too late! Yeah… that was one thing that stood out to me. How about YOU? Comment below and let me know. And hey… please share this episode with someone who might need it!

In this episode, you’ll learn about how author Sheri Salata’s traditional publishing journey arrived at some fun radical advice for readers. I’ve organized the episode’s “fun nuggets” into two categories: 1) fun nuggets for the publishing journey, and 2) radical “fun nuggets” for a more beautiful life. The fun nuggets for the publishing journey: #1: Get an accountability system for your writing that works for you. #2: Remember that your Rolodex is your best trend on your publishing journey. #3: Realize not even the “big names” have self-doubt when putting their work out into the world. #4: Recognize that writing is a valuable avenue for pulling the gold out of our lives and allows us to process unprocessed emotions. Any Oprah fans out there? If you are a diehard Oprah fan like me, then you probably watched Season 25 of Oprah Behind the Scenes, and you probably remember Executive Producer Sheri Salata. She was also co-president of Harpo studios and OWN. I remember watching a scene from that special that showed Sheri waking up in the morning with her bulldogs getting ready to go to the Oprah show, and I thought how does she do it all? It turns out Sheri has a fascinating story. She had reached the heights of her business career when she decided to reinvent herself and find more balance in her life. She woke up and realized that a career of her dreams wasn’t enough. She set out to reinvent herself with a job and life that are one and live her life to the fullest. If you have ever felt stuck or in a rut, you will love Sheri’s story of reinvention and using happy as a compass. Sheri is the author of The Beautiful No, the owner of The Pillar Life, and co-host of The Sheri + Nancy Show. This is a powerful episode as Sheri shares her wit and wisdom in a way that only a true storyteller like Sheri can. [08:16] Sheri shares what her life was like as executive producer for Oprah before day one of life after Oprah. [11:13] Sheri had a great story for her book. She started in an entry level position for Oprah at the age of 35. This was the 3rd or 4th time she started over, and she reinvented herself again at age 56. [13:58] You don't know your in a rut until you're out of it. Forcing yourself to jump the track and breathe new air makes life more interesting. [16:28] Sheri had a dream come true career but not a dream come true life. She had to do a serious reckoning with the tenderness of hearts to get to the core of the kind of life she dreamed of. [19:44] At a Shamanic ceremony in the desert, Sheri learned that to start with a fresh page you have to let go and clear the slate. [24:05] Sheri and Nancy built a business around living and doing things for a better life and then reporting back about it. [28:01] Sheri switched her story about working out. She is a storyteller, so she told herself a new story that inspired her using words like power, flexibility, renewal, and recovery. [30:55] Awareness is everything. How not to make misery your compass. When happiness is your compass, you are keenly aware of what feels good. These are clues that your destination is lovely and wonderful. [36:58] The amazing story of how Sheri landed her job at Oprah. You don't want to miss this story! It's also the basis for the title of her book The Beautiful No. This episode is brought to you by LinkedIn: LinkedIn is the perfect platform to market your business. You know how you meet someone and you instantly feel a soul connection? That’s exactly what it felt like when I heard today’s guest, Sheri Salata, speak at an AWE (Amazing Women Entrepreneurs) event about a year ago. I loved her energy and identified with her when she began speaking, and I then had the honor of meeting her briefly. Needless to say, I’d been dying to interview her ever since and was thrilled when were finally able to sit down and chat – in person! Sheri is funny, successful and soulful – a powerful trifecta if I ever heard of one. With a 21-year career with The Oprah Winfrey Show, she admittedly had the dreamy career, but she realized she didn’t have the dreamy life. And she came to discover that it was because she forgot how to dream and use happiness (not misery) as her compass. As Sheri and her friend’s podcast, “This is Fifty,” suggests, it’s never too late to change your story, find happiness and follow your dreams – no matter what your age is. This was one of the fastest hours of my life and I know this episode will fly for you too. It’s my hope that you soak in every moment of Sheri’s dreamy goodness and put on your magical glasses to see the miracles that surround us all. -- Question Highlights: What did it feel like when you knew there was something else? How did you start to calibrate your “compass?” What do you tell women who think it’s too late or that their dreams have passed? What is a story you feel you’re working through right now? What is on your “to-be” list? How do you get your “being space” rolling? Where are you getting joy from during your 90-day cleanse? What are you most excited about? What are you a beginner at right now? When you spot something (a miracle), do you call it out or celebrate it? In This Episode We Talk about: What Sheri knows right now Why happiness is the right compass (not misery) Dreaming as a muscle and a valuable activity Changing your story to make your dreams come true What achievement means to Sheri now The importance of having ONE integrated life Why Sheri seeks happiness, joy, love and peace in everything What it means to be in the “being space” of manifesting Being in integrity with yourself and making tweaks as you go Clarity and what it means to Sheri Why it’s important to lean into self-care rituals and the energy that’s going to help you manifest your dreams Sheri and her friend’ Nancy’s This is Fifty podcast And so much more… Quotes: “I’m a champion resetter and reframer.” “Happiness is the right compass.” “Stories make our dreams come true.” “Reimagine what’s possible and reignite that flame.” “I work on my ‘to-be’ list, not my to-do list.” “You can have the greatest boss in the world, but you’re still getting bossed.” “I only want to be on the joy road.” “Be a ‘BE-er” of transformation, not a talker about it.” “Dreams put you in a state of potential and possibility while appreciating where you’re at right now.” “There’s no more important story than the story you’re telling yourself about yourself.” “Don’t lose hope in your own possibilities.” “Stir the hope soup.” “Hope is the beginning of the trail.” “You’re supposed to live the life of your dreams.” -- Sheri Salata is cohost of the popular podcast series “This is Fifty with Sheri and Nancy” where she and her soulmate friend of 27 years, Nancy Hala, are recreating the middle of life as they set out to make the rest of their dreams come true. Sheri and Nancy are also co-founders of STORY, a media company producing print, digital and live event content, and Orange Dragon Productions developing TV and film content.
