Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 060826 Original Broadcast Date: 06/08/26 It was a packed week in food news and Elizabeth had plenty to say about all of it. WK Kellogg is becoming one of the first major food companies to completely overhaul its packaging around nutrition transparency with a new system called SPOONS, which stands for Simple ingredients, Protein, Outstanding fiber, Other nutritious foods, Nutrients, and Single digit sugars. It rolls out this month on Raisin Bran, Frosted Mini Wheats, Corn Flakes, and Rice Krispies. Kellogg invented the nutrition label. Now they're trying to reinvent what it means. Meanwhile Doritos just launched a Garlic Parm flavor nationwide, and if you were hoping two years of MAHA pressure and a $50 billion market cap hit had taught Frito Lay anything, the ingredient list will disappoint you. Maltodextrin, yeast extract, potassium chloride, citric acid. New flavor. Same playbook. Walmart expanded its 30 minute grocery delivery to 33 markets, now reaching 60 percent of the U.S. population. Chick fil A is shrinking its chicken sandwich with no comment and no apology. Upcycled ingredients, food byproducts that used to be called garbage, are now certified and showing up at Whole Foods, Target, and Costco. And a Virginia woman is suing Outback Steakhouse for $1.5 million after slipping face first on mashed potatoes on the way to the restroom. Virginia is a contributory negligence state. Her attorney has a long road ahead. Elizabeth connects the dots on all of it. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 060826 Original Broadcast Date: 06/08/26 Travel news this week had range. Start with the most avoidable disaster of the Memorial Day weekend: an RV driver in Montrose, Colorado dumped his black water waste tank directly into a Maverik gas station's underground diesel supply after mistaking the diesel tank inlet for an RV dump station. The pumps shut down immediately. Cleanup crews were called. Nobody has been identified or charged. This actually happened. On a more encouraging note, Amtrak has proposed a new passenger rail corridor connecting Atlanta to Charlotte, two of the fastest growing metro areas in the Southeast with zero intercity rail service between them. The route would run approximately four hours with stops in Spartanburg and Greenville. Amtrak calls it a top expansion priority and it is currently in environmental review. Dolly Parton is opening a travel center in her hometown of Sevierville, Tennessee, with a gas station, convenience store, restaurant, and retail space themed around her life and music, developed by Dollywood's parent company. The airline industry is moving toward a lifetime passenger ban database that would allow carriers to share misconduct records and bar unruly flyers across all participating airlines. And the State Department has expanded its Mexico travel warning with additional Level 2 advisories, even as more than 35 million Americans make the trip annually. Elizabeth puts it all in context with the straight talk the travel industry counts on from Food Travel USA. 2026-0518 FOOD TRAVEL USA WITH ELIZABETH DOUGHERTY The TRUTH About Food and Travel Album: The TRUTH About Food & Travel 060826 Original Broadcast Date: 06/08/26 FULL SHOW: After an update on Food News, Elizabeth has a warning the mainstream media hasn't caught up to yet: the global fertilizer supply is running out, the farms are already feeling it, and your grocery store has a countdown clock that nobody in Washington is talking about. And the Top 10 Food Cravings segment reframes everything you thought you knew about willpower, revealing the specific nutritional deficiencies driving the urges your body refuses to let you ignore. You'll hear how Canada has been quietly erasing the GMO fingerprint from ultraprocessed food ingredients before they ever cross the border into the United States, with former Canadian government scientist Dr. Thierry Vrain as the insider witness who spent thirty years defending the lie before he finally stopped. The Windows 11 privacy segment reveals how Microsoft turned a routine software upgrade into a surveillance agreement most users clicked through in three seconds, with Copilot so deeply embedded in the operating system that your personal files, photos, and financial records are being vacuumed out in real time. Elizabeth also takes listeners underground to the Lincoln Memorial Undercroft, the forgotten chamber beneath one of America's most iconic monuments that has been hiding in plain sight since 1922. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 060826 Original Broadcast Date: 06/08/26 This week on Servers Revenge we hear from Gina, an experienced server who has made it her mission to train the next generation of restaurant professionals how to actually do the job right. According to Gina, doing it right comes down to four keys, four fundamentals that separate the servers who scrape by on 15 percent from the ones who build a loyal following and a real income. The first key is creating a unique dining experience for every single person at the table, not running a transaction but building a moment. The best restaurants have figured out that customer retention doesn't come from the kitchen alone. It comes from empowering servers to immediately fix problems the moment they arise, without a manager, without a delay, and without an excuse. Gina also breaks down why honesty about kitchen delays actually increases tips rather than decreases them, because customers reward transparency when they feel respected. And she makes the case that genuine service earns trust, and trust is what ultimately earns the sale. The Restaurant Launch is the consulting firm behind this training and they teach servers how to make money for the restaurant and for themselves at the same time. If you're working in a restaurant right now, or managing one, or thinking about either, this is seven minutes that will change how you think about the floor. Gina doesn't just train servers. She teaches professionals how to build a career out of something most people treat as a temporary job. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 060826 Original Broadcast Date: 06/08/26 The food system has a fertilizer problem and almost nobody in mainstream media is talking about it seriously. The global supply of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, the three pillars of modern agricultural production, is increasingly concentrated in the hands of a small number of countries and an even smaller number of corporations. When that supply gets disrupted, the ripple moves fast: from the farm to the commodity market to the grocery shelf, often within a single growing season. And the disruptions are already happening. Sanctions, trade conflicts, energy costs, and weather events are simultaneously squeezing production and distribution at a scale that most American consumers have never had to consider. The farmers feel it first. They absorb the cost, scale back, or exit the business entirely. The consolidation that follows is exactly the kind that Food Travel USA has been documenting for years, with large operations absorbing the land and leverage of smaller ones who couldn't survive the input cost spike. Elizabeth breaks down what a fertilizer shortage actually means in practical terms, who controls the supply chain, how the current geopolitical environment is accelerating the crisis, and what the calamity ahead looks like if the structural problems don't get addressed. This is the kind of story that takes years to develop in the open and lands like a surprise when it finally hits. You were warned here first. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 060826 Original Broadcast Date: 06/08/26 Twenty-five years ago, in the weeks after September 11th, two pieces of legislation changed the way Americans Your food cravings are not a character flaw. They are a communication system. This week Elizabeth breaks down the top ten things your body is actually asking for when you reach for the chips, the chocolate, the red meat, or the ice, and what the science says is really going on underneath those urges. Constant sugar cravings often signal chromium deficiency, which disrupts insulin regulation and creates a relentless cycle of craving, spiking, and crashing. Chocolate cravings point to magnesium, a mineral nearly half of Americans are low on, and one that burns fastest under stress. Salt cravings indicate dehydration or adrenal fatigue. Red meat cravings are your body flagging iron or zinc deficiency. Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency on earth. Carb cravings are frequently about serotonin, not hunger. Dairy cravings signal calcium. Coffee cravings can indicate low phosphorus levels affecting cellular energy metabolism. And compulsive ice chewing is a documented symptom of iron deficiency anemia serious enough that doctors have a clinical name for it. Before you blame willpower, Elizabeth says, consider that your body may be trying to tell you something specific in the only language it knows you'll respond to. This Top 10 is part consumer science, part nutrition education, and entirely the kind of practical information that never shows up on a food label but probably should. Listen to what you're craving. Your body has been trying to talk to you. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 060826 Original Broadcast Date: 06/08/26 A Conway, Arkansas RV dealer is currently facing three felony theft charges. Customers handed him their campers and trailers on consignment, trusting him to sell their rigs and cut them a check, and never saw a dime. Other buyers paid in full and never received a title. Conway police say more victims are likely out there who haven't even filed a report yet. This is not a new story. It is a story that keeps happening because consignment sounds simple and most sellers never read the fine print before handing over the keys to an asset worth fifty, a hundred, or two hundred thousand dollars. Elizabeth walks you through exactly what to demand before you sign anything. Get a written agreement before the rig leaves your driveway. Know your state's payment timeline law. Never surrender the original title until a check has cleared. Verify the dealer is licensed and bonded through your state DMV. Visit the lot regularly and confirm your rig is still there. Build a return deadline into the agreement. And seriously consider whether consignment is the right move at all when private sale and auction platforms are increasingly viable alternatives. The bottom line is this: trust is fine. A signed contract, a retained title, and a verified license are better. This week's RV Tips and Tales is the segment you want to hear before you ever walk into a consignment lot. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 060826 Original Broadcast Date: 06/08/26 He spent thirty years as a Canadian government scientist telling the public that GMO crops were safe. He was good at it. He believed it. Then Dr. Thierry Vrain retired, got off the government payroll, and for the first time in his career read the actual science behind GMOs. What he found demolished everything he had spent three decades defending. But here's the part that never makes the headlines: Canada has been quietly allowing GMO ingredients into the food supply for years with no mandatory labeling, no consumer disclosure, and no accountability. When a product says Product of Canada, you have no legal right to know what's really in it. And it gets worse. When that GMO ingredient gets ultraprocessed, the modified DNA becomes completely undetectable. No detectable DNA means no label required under American law either. The GMO doesn't just disappear into your food. It disappears into the ultraprocessed ingredient that's already hiding from you. A 9th Circuit ruling from January 2026 begins to close that loophole, but it could be years before it shows up on a single label in your grocery store. From the Food Travel USA archives of May 2013, Elizabeth Dougherty sits down with Dr. Vrain in a conversation that was ahead of its time and is even more relevant today. This is what sixteen years of telling you so actually looks like. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 060826 Original Broadcast Date: 06/08/26 It was a week in the air that was hard to believe and impossible to ignore. Start with the near collision over Fort Lauderdale. A JetBlue flight on final approach nearly hit a small Beechcraft 76 from a flight school that was flying erratically and had gone completely silent on air traffic control. The JetBlue crew received a TCAS collision alert and climbed hard to avoid it. The two aircraft came within 500 feet of each other. The air traffic controller's on the record assessment of the other pilot: "That guy's insane." The pilot's response: "I agree." The FAA is investigating. Then there's the story that should have been front page news everywhere. Two NIH researchers were arrested at Detroit Metro Airport after allegedly smuggling 113 vials of monkeypox virus into the United States from Brazzaville, Republic of Congo, where an active outbreak was underway, packed in Styrofoam coolers inside a large black case on a commercial Delta flight. They told Customs it was diagnostic equipment. It was not. The U.S. Attorney said it plainly: "Let that sink in." And in the background of all of it, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin is threatening to pull Customs and Border Protection officers from airports in sanctuary cities, a move that would effectively shut down international travel at LAX, O'Hare, SFO, and six other major hubs. Elizabeth has the reaction and the details. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 060826 Original Broadcast Date: 06/08/26 Cruise news this week runs the full range from genuinely cool to genuinely alarming. On the cool end: Holland America has loaded bourbon barrels onto all eleven of its ships in partnership with Jefferson's Bourbon, the same distillery famous for aging whiskey at sea. Six months of ocean movement, salt air, and shifting climates produce a flavor profile that can't be replicated on land. Each ship gets its own barrel, each barrel yields 150 to 300 bottles, and you can only buy them on board starting in 2027. Your floating hotel is now a floating distillery. On the alarming end: Royal Caribbean and MSC are confiscating Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses at the gangway after passengers were caught secretly recording fellow cruisers at pools, in casinos, and in buffet lines. MSC banned them everywhere. Royal Caribbean bans them in restrooms, kids areas, and the casino, and if yours are prescription, they suggest you bring a backup pair. Welcome to your relaxing vacation. Meanwhile over a hundred passengers on the Caribbean Princess are riding out a confirmed norovirus outbreak with days still left on their cruise. The CDC confirmed it. This is the second Princess ship to go down this year. The first outbreak in March took nearly 200 people. And Carnival has replaced the barbecue station on several ships with Chicken, Waffles and Waves. Half the passengers love it. The other half want their pulled pork back and they are not being quiet about it. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 060826 Original Broadcast Date: 06/08/26 Most people who visit the Lincoln Memorial never know there's a room underneath it. The Undercroft, the cavernous space beneath the main chamber, was never supposed to exist at all. When workers finished the foundation in the 1910s, they discovered a hollow chamber large enough to walk through, its concrete pillars draped in stalactites formed by decades of mineral seepage from above. For most of the twentieth century the space was sealed off, forgotten, and used only for storage. Then the National Park Service began a major restoration project and the Undercroft was opened to the public for the first time. What visitors find down there is unlike anything else on the National Mall. The original construction graffiti is still on the walls. Scaffolding used during the 1960s civil rights rallies above is still stored there. The acoustics are otherworldly. And the columns holding up one of the most iconic buildings in American history stretch down into a space that feels like the subterranean foundation of the country itself. Elizabeth and the Destination Unknown team take you below the surface of American history to a place most tourists walk right over without knowing it exists. This is what the Lincoln Memorial looks like from underneath. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 060826 Original Broadcast Date: 06/08/26 Microsoft ended support for Windows 10 in October 2025. Machines as young as five years old, bought new and running perfectly, were declared obsolete overnight. The only real path forward was upgrading to Windows 11, and with that upgrade came a new End User License Agreement that most users clicked through in under three seconds. What that EULA quietly grants Microsoft is broad, loosely worded access to your system for data collection, telemetry, and behavioral monitoring. And here's the part that should concern every Windows user: Copilot isn't an app you install. It's woven into the operating system at the kernel level. That distinction matters enormously because Microsoft isn't limited to seeing your filenames or folder structure. They can access actual file contents. Renaming a file doesn't protect you. Turning off the visible Copilot interface doesn't remove the access layer underneath it. In an exclusive interview with Claude, you'll hear exactly what the Windows 11 upgrade cycle really means for your privacy, your data, and your reasonable expectation that what's on your computer stays on your computer. The answer, under Windows 11, is that you don't have one. If you're still on Windows 10, you're running unsupported software. If you upgraded, you signed a surveillance agreement. Those are your two options. The Justice Department is finally looking at the Big Four meat producers and the price-fixing that's been emptying your wallet for years. Grocery Pet Peeves is back and the anger is loud and justified. Hantavirus gets the trivia treatment and the answers are more unsettling than you'd expect. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 051826 Original Broadcast Date: 05/18/26 Twenty-five years ago in the weeks after September 11th, two pieces of legislation changed the way Americans move through the world forever. The TSA was born and The Patriot Act became law. Elizabeth marks the anniversary by asking the question that never gets asked on the commemorative segments: did it work? Not whether it made us feel safer, but rather whether it actually made us safer. The shoe removal, the body scanners, the no-fly lists, the surveillance architecture built around the promise of never again. A quarter century later, the apparatus is larger than ever, the civil liberties conversation never fully recovered, and the average American traveler is still taking off their shoes in a fluorescent-lit line. Twenty-five years in. It's time for an honest accounting. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 051826 Original Broadcast Date: 05/18/26 Twenty-five years of security theater, shrinking seats, disappearing amenities, and an industry that used tragedy as cover to become something passengers didn't vote for. Elizabeth counts down the ten most significant ways air travel has changed since September 11th and the verdict is not a mixed bag. It's a one-sided ledger. The airlines got bailouts, consolidation, and a captive customer base legally required to submit to screening before boarding. The passenger got less legroom, more fees, longer lines, and a flying experience stripped of anything that used to make it feel like an event. Some of these changes were sold as safety. Some were sold as efficiency. All of them made flying worse. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 051826 Original Broadcast Date: 05/18/26 Opening a restaurant is hard. Keeping one open is harder. And some of the most high-profile restaurant failures in American history had nothing to do with the food. Elizabeth counts down ten restaurant failures — names you'll recognize, concepts that seemed bulletproof — and the actual reasons they collapsed. Bad locations. Ownership ego. Concept drift. Debt structures that never made sense. Celebrities who thought fame was a business plan. The restaurant industry has a failure rate that should terrify anyone thinking about entering it, and the reasons are almost always the same ones nobody talked about while the place was still open. This list is a masterclass in what not to do — told through the wreckage of places that didn't survive long enough to learn the lesson themselves. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 051826 Original Broadcast Date: 05/18/26 he organ transplant system in America is supposed to be built on altruism, medical necessity, and a waiting list that plays fair. It isn't. Elizabeth pulls back the curtain on how transplant networks actually operate — who moves up the list and why, what role money and geography play in outcomes that are supposed to be purely medical, and what happens to the organs of people who die in hospitals that have financial relationships with procurement organizations. The horrible truth is that the system designed to save lives is riddled with the same conflicts of interest, opacity, and institutional self-dealing that corrupt every other corner of American healthcare. The waiting list is real. The fairness is not. And the people who die waiting deserve better than a system that was never fully honest about what it was. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 051826 Original Broadcast Date: 05/18/26 You bought it for your front porch. You didn't know you were buying into a facial recognition network. Elizabeth breaks down how Ring cameras — sold to millions of American households as a home security product — are now part of an industrial-scale facial scanning infrastructure that operates well beyond your property line. The data doesn't stay local. The partnerships with law enforcement are broader than the terms of service suggested. And the footage captured by your neighbor's Ring is part of the same system whether you own one or not. This is what surveillance looks like when it's sold as convenience and installed voluntarily by the people being watched. The doorbell camera was the easiest sell in the history of mass surveillance. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 051826 Original Broadcast Date: 05/18/26 Hantavirus is back in the news and most people know almost nothing about it beyond the name. Elizabeth turns it into a educational segment and the answers are more unsettling than the questions. Where does it actually come from? How does it spread? What does exposure actually look like and how quickly does it move? The trivia format makes it accessible but the information underneath it is serious. Hantavirus doesn't care about your zip code, your income, or whether you think it's someone else's problem. It lives where rodents live — which is everywhere. This is the kind of segment that sounds light until you realize you're learning something that could actually matter. Pay attention. Elizabeth brings another round of Grocery Pet Peeves — and this week the anger is loud, specific, and completely justified. Self-checkout machines that don't work. Loyalty card systems that promise savings and deliver confusion. Sale items that disappear on day one. In-store radio nobody asked for. Shelves reorganized without warning. The grocery store has quietly become one of the most frustrating consumer experiences in America, and the people shopping in them every week have had enough. This isn't venting. It's a documented pattern of retail manipulation that costs shoppers time, money, and patience. The stores are counting on you being too busy to push back. Food Travel USA with Elizabeth DoughertyAlbum: The TRUTH About Food and Travel 051826 Original Broadcast Date: 05/18/26 The four companies that control the majority of America's beef, pork, and poultry supply have operated like an untouchable cartel for years. Now the Justice Department is looking. Which companies are in the crosshairs, and what price-fixing and market manipulation at this scale means for every American who buys groceries. The Big Four didn't get this powerful by accident. They got there through consolidation, regulatory capture, and decades of making sure the people watching them were also depending on them. The investigation is overdue. Whether it produces accountability or just produces headlines is the question. Either way, the next time you look at a meat price at the grocery store, you'll know exactly why it is what it is. Now, we are concerned about new information we discovered about a process designed to increase the profitability of sugarcane crops. We want to share this information with you. Thanks to a listener who sent us a tip, we verified some surprising information in an interview with a researcher at the USDA. Sugarcane in Louisiana, Florida and other parts of the world are sprayed with the herbicide glyphosate (the active ingredient in RoundUp) before harvest to speed up the ripening process and to increase its sweetness. Also, read about new GMO bioengineered sugarcane undisclosed FRAUD. Some studies worldwide suggest there is no safe level of glyphosate. Glyphosate was not developed to be ingested by humans. U.S. Sugar (the same entity developing genetically modified oranges through Southern Gardens Citrus) did not respond to our attempts to contact them to comment on this story. In the meantime, please enjoy this classic episode of Crrow777 , in which we identified the archetypal playbook that was being used in real time to fundamentally transform society through the Covid narrative...
