HEAVY Music Interviews
Escaping The Abyss With NIKLAS MULLER From AD INFINITUM

HEAVY Music Interviews

Musical evolution is a beautiful thing when allowed to flourish, cast free of modern constraints and expectations to let the metaphorical wings rise and sweep the band and their music into unchartered, exciting territory. So it is for Swiss/German metal outfit AD Infinitum as they prepare to unveil their new album, Abyss, on October 11.Since setting the tone with their debut album Chapter I: Monarchy in 2020, AD Infinitum have allowed their creativity to dictate terms, following that album up with Chapter I: Revisited, which was an acoustic take on their debut. While favouring symphonic undertones throughout their career, AD Infinitum have maintained a steady attraction towards the harder side of the spectrum, culminating in Abyss which reveals a whole new side to AD Infinitum's sonic arsenal, refining their sound and expectations to create what is said to be their most dynamic, modern and progressive record to date.HEAVY caught up with drummer Niklas Muller to find out more."First of all, I think the most important part about this album is we stepped away from the symphonic side of things," he measured. "That was a huge part of our music for the first three albums. It was not an initial choice where we said no, we don't want to do it any more, and we will do it with an entire other production, it was more we said we don't wanna have it just for the sake of having it. We just want to see where the music leads us, and it just so happened when we wrote the first songs in our song camp we realised there was not really the need for orchestral elements. We managed to create soundscapes and nice atmospheres without those instruments. We thought it would be too much and over the top to now add the orchestral elements. It was not an initial choice that we step away from symphonic metal, it just happened in the writing process. This is the biggest musical part that changed. On the other hand, I have a feeling that we grew up a little bit (laughs). It's like, when you continue to write music, you change. It feels like we think way, way more about every little part of a song than we did on previous albums. I'm not saying that we didn't think at all about the early music (laughs). It's like we are questioning more on this album. We already did that with Chapter III when we had the songwriting camp… I think this is also the biggest part why we are questioning that much, because we were all in the same room together writing songs, which wasn't the case with Chapter I and Chapter II because we were living so far apart. I think this just led to the next steps."In the full interview, Niklas expressed excitement about sharing the album with their fans and playing it live in Europe and the US, with hopes of eventually performing in Australia. Niklas also discussed the evolution of AD Infinitum's music, particularly the shift away from symphonic elements. We discussed the concept behind the next album trilogy, with Abyss representing a dark state of mind as opposed to the next two, Surface and Elysium, which symbolise healing and happiness. He also discussed the band's creative process, future direction, and the shift away from symphonic metal, but he remained non-committal as to whether the band would travel that path again in the future.Niklas talked about their upcoming tour with Kamelot, Blackbriar and Frozen Crown as well as next year's tour with Eluveitie and Infected Rain, plus more.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/heavy-music-interviews--2687660/support.

Metal Debate Album Review - Rankarumpu (Korpiklaani)

Welcome back to The Great Metal Debate podcast. Today I'll be exploring the twelfth full-length release from of Finland's folk metal powerhouse Korpiklaani, titled Ramkarumpu. Despite not having a massed a whole assemblage of performers Eluveitie-style, Korpiklanni manage to split the metalwork evenly among the instrumentalists such that you're never sure what sound will be leading the break. We'll start with the accordion-work of Sammi Perttula. He's classically trained and definitely knows what to do to derive the most out of his instrument. On “Tapa sen kun kerkeet” the accordion provides a heavy backing atmosphere in parts, and a smooth transition break between choruses, playing an effective foil between the guitar and violin. Similarly on “Nouse” Pertulla expertly sets the tempo and foundation for what the other instruments do. “Mettään” is a song where the guitar is in the driver's seat, but the accordion is the glue that makes everything come together, and especially in the outro break briefly dueling with both violin and guitar. Working alongside Perttula as partner-in-crime is new violinist Olli Vänskä who also performs with bombastic symphonic Finnish metallers Turisas. Vänskä is amazingly adept with his instrument, able to create heavy passages that'll have you banging your head as well as instigating blissful melodies that'll leave your heart in your throat. The violin takes the lead on track number 11, “Oraakkelit,” splattering seething, writhing folky-flavored notes overtop as the accordion and guitar chug beneath in lock-step. I love the atmosphere the band builds with this song; that said, I didn't think the chorus quite lived up to the rest of the composition, and the ending was a bit too abrupt for my liking. With “Viikatelintu” Perttula lays a brilliant foundation providing a beautiful intro melody and, later in the song giving a signature break counterbalancing Jonne's singing to create a crescendious ending. Another highlight – and one of my favs from this recording – is “Kalmisto.” This is heavy violin – as aggressive as any metal guitar you'll encounter. As expert as they are individually Vänskä and Perttula are at their best when they are working together. On “Saunaan” and “Mettään” the two split the main lead break, with accordion following the violin on each. The order is reversed on the break for “No perkele,” which has a primary melody that's absolute fire. In a competition of which instrument is most dominant, Perttula and Vänskä are lock in a game that has gone into multiple overtimes. I have yet to discuss the title track, “Rankarumpu.” This is a brilliant composition and my favorite song on the album, sadly tucked right in the middle of the track listing which, in my opinion, is a mistake not to have featured it at the beginning or end. You've got a great building guitar riff, and killer swinging violin melody. I don't know whether I like the versing or chorus better – both are equally awesome. High energy and some of the best vocal-work by singer Jonne Järvelä on the record, with the backing vocals kicking in a just the perfect time. Speaking of the vocals, Jonne's unique vocal style is superbly consistent throughout. For the most part he does a great job of mixing up his approach, and it is very emotive. That said, on a few songs is his singing approach could sound a touch repetitive, although admittedly my total unfamiliarity with Finnish doesn't allow me to do any lyrical analysis to truly understand the context. If you have enjoyed some number of Korpiklaani's previous albums from their discography you likely won't be disappointed with Rankarumpu. I'm giving Rankarumpu an 8 ½ out of ten rating. Rankarumpu is released on April 5th from Nuclear Blast records. You can pre-order the album via the band's website, and be sure to check out plenty of opportunities to catch the band live in 2024 both in North America and Europe.

I am currently re-obsessed with Norse Mythology after a long break of ...can't count how many years it's been. I am especially interested in the etymology of Loki (& in etymology in general, across genres & subjects...) & may read more about Loki &/or other Norse Gods & Goddesses, myths, & stories in the future! Also, this is just a side-note, but I am NO EXPERT in Norse Mythology. I just find it it very fascinating & have been awed by it since I was about 11, though, I can trace back my 1st introduction to Viking & Norse influences back to my really early childhood through the music of Eluveitie (shared with me by an older cousin) & I absolutely loved some of their songs & found the female vocals very empowering as a 5 to 7 year old. Anyway, there may be another episode recorded on whisper reading the Wikipedia of Eluveitie, but this one introduces the Wikipedia page of Loki & then I jump into talking about tiny homes lol Another obsession I got back into after watching Hack My Home on Netflix & observe & enjoy my newly renovated bathroom...It got me reflecting on the time I renovated an apartment unit through the help of volunteers (I fundraised for the whole thing myself) & I am missing that type of confidence? Energy? Stamina? Practice? Or just YOUTH? Lol I had back at age 17. I've changed so much since then & yet in some ways, I feel like my values have stayed the same-I still care about creativity, sustainability, & community. I think the state of the world right now could use a tiny home village/communes/co-housing/"radical" movement of the re-purposing of spaces to decrease the amount of waste in our ecology.

Un año después, grabarían el siguiente álbum: I Made my Own Hell. Pagina Oficial: https://www.vhaldemar.net/

Kalevala have a new album released this year – the seventh full-length of their career – entitled “Пляска Святого Вита.” As is typical for releases that excite me, I can't help but go through this one track by track to share my thoughts… The opening song “Гори по полной!” begins softly but quickly ramps up the pressure, especially when the accordion kicks in. All elements work together perfectly on this one – uptempo, aggressive, joyouse, and folky. Singer Ksenia Markevich is right in her comfort range here, thundering away with her clear, strong, beautiful voice. Well executed all around and with an awesome chorus that I can't help but sing along with and bang my head to… The pace comes down just a notch on the second song and title track, “Пляска святого Вита.” The keys set the mood on this one while the guitars and folk instruments provide a great building mountain of metal riffs atop. Ksenia's vocals are a bit more tempered here, but even more mesmerizing. This is one I can see played live and the crowd jumping along in time to the jaunty beat. The main melody is incredibly catchy… two listens and you won't be able to rid it from your head. “Ловец змей” – the first single and video from the album – is a mid-paced rocker that gets soft on the verse, and fairly light in the chorus. Probably the most AOR-friendly track on the album. Not a bad song by any stretch, but bit cutsie in the execution for my taste. Next up is “Проснись во мне, Зверь.” This is the best of Ksenia's voice – slightly creepy/haunting in the verses and empassioned on the chorus. Great riffs from guitarist Nikita Andriyanov and another cool vocal melody from Ksenia. The violins pair perfectly with the guitar throughout this one – it might be my favorite track on the album! The keys come back strong in “Именем леса,” really raising the sonic floor and creating a quite uplifiting, mythic feel throughout. Kalevala are very skilled when it comes to songcraft, and I can't give them enough respect for the effort they make in composing these songs. Track six – “Безбожники” - relies more heavily on blunt guitar riffs to drive the song, although there's plenty of starts and stops to freshen things up along the way. I think one thing even Kalevala's harshest critics would admit is that they are able to keep plenty of variety and freshness in their song composition, even while adhering to a fairly constrained stylistic approach. “Безбожники” is followed by the pristine rocker “Сто дней.” Ksenia does a great job changing the projection of her voice to perfectly emote alongside the guitar and garmin. Speaking of, the accordian solo is a real highlight on this one! “Так долго ждать,” does a fine job of building the energy – a very nuanced, considered approach to the instruments punctuated by energized bursts of guitar and featuring another brilliant accordion lead break. A bit more of an epic feel to this one as compared to the approach on most other tracks on the album. On “Бесхвостая лиса,” the strumming ukelele intro sets the stage for an upbeat, bouncy melody. This one alternates between some light touches and shading and more aggressive elements. The tenth and final track “Сёстры бога” brings those folk instruments – particularly the violin - back to front-and-center, allowing them to lead the way while the guitars churn beneath. An upbeat rocker that provides a worthy outro. In summary, I'm giving this album a rating of 9 ½ out of ten. This is absolutely my favorite metal release to date this year, and a near lock for a spot on my list of best albums of 2023. I urge fans of Finntroll, Ensiferum, and Eluveitie to give this album and band a listen. You can get “Пляска святого Вита” digitally via Apple Music and itunes, and most of Kalevala's back discography is available from Bandcamp.com.

Welcome to 2023 and Season 6 of the Story of Rock and Roll Radio Show.  Episode 1 got going on 5 Jan 2023 on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 with a track called 'Emaheeval' by Desperado.  Desperado was a post-Twisted Sister band comprising Dee Snider, Bernie Tormé, Clive Burr, and Marc Russell.  It's an excellent album that was shelved in a nasty bit of spite by Bob Krasnow and it's a pity because if it had been released at the time it would have done well.  Dee has done OK though.  Next up Aerosmith with Walk This Way, what a riff!!  Joe Perry at his finest.  We continued with some Thundermother out of Stockholm, who are doing a great job of paying reparations for the music ABBA subjected the world to in the '70s, nice work ladies, and thank you

Swiss metal outfit Chaoseum are a band that should be on your radar.Or maybe they already are. They only recently put themselves in my crosshairs when I received their latest album The Third Eye which was so good I felt compelled to reach out for a chat.Forming in 2018, Chaoseum put out their debut album First Step To Hell that same year which led to a quick succession of tours with Soulfly, Eluveitie and Tarja. Along the way the band parted ways with their original vocalist and enlisted guitarist C.K. Smile who made his debut on 2020s album Second Life. Despite never having fronted a band before, Smile soon stamped his authority on Chaoseum's music before they slowed momentarily with the acoustic album Second Skin during lockdown. It was a brave, but confident release from Chaoseum, which endeared their music to a new legion of fans who are now carrying Chaoseum further up the ladder to global domination. With The Third Eye having been out for just over a month, HEAVY sat down with Smile for a look inside Chaoseum."We have had a lot of great comments," he smiled when asked how the new album has been received. "We are very happy and have had many good reviews. All the ratings are good, the comments are good. That means for the next album we have to kick your ass more hard (laughs)."We press Smile to explain the musical components of The Third Eye."We tried to be a little more dark," he measured, "something a little more dark, or mystic. That's why the album is called The Third Eye because it talks a lot about death in many different ways and many different points of view. On one song I'm talking about killing somebody and on another song I'm talking about being a ghost. In another I am talking about my funeral - that's Dance On My Grave - I'm talking about my funeral how I want mine in the future (laughs). Everyone dancing on my fucken grave and having a big party. That was the subject of the album. I know it's very cliche because death is so metal, but it easier to talk about it for this album."In the full interview Smile talks about the musical influences on The Third Eye, finding your own sound within Nu-Metal, the beautifully produced title track, the early days of Chaoseum, his coming in to the band as vocalist, learning how to best use his voice, their acoustic album and why they did it, the genesis of the band name, coming to Australia and more.

Episode 44 of season 5 aired on 3 November 2022 at 7 pm sharp on Rebel Rock Radio.  It was a cracker of an episode with plenty of new albums and plenty of rock from around the world.  First out the blocks we had The Beatles' classic ‘Day Tripper' off a tribute to The Beatles album called Butchering the Beatles.  This track featured Jack Blades, Tommy Shaw, and Doug Aldrich and it's a guitar fest of note.  From there we heard from Guns ‘n' Roses with a live version of ‘Pretty Tied Up' followed by a band called Paradox and a track of their excellent album Pangea called 'Cheat and Pretend'.   We mixed in the legends with the newer artists by taking a track off Ozzy Osbourne's new album Patient Number 9 and following Oz with Dead City Ruins and a track called “Drifter'.  We heard a track off Herman Franks' 2021 release Two For a Lie.  Texas Hippie Coalition went down well as did another track off the Phil X and the Drills EP called Stupid Good Looking, Vol 1.  There was a lot from Germany on the show, totally unplanned but along with Paradox we had Scorpions, Iron Allies, Herman Frank, on his own and in Iron Allies, and also Rammstein with their strange tune known as B*********.  The SA music came from Jasper Dan, Ross Harding, and L.A. Cobra and then we took in the new Skid Row and a track off Feel It Live which is a live album recorded by The Stranglers in 2013 when they were on Tour promoting the Giants album, the first with Hugh Cornwells replacement Baz Warne in the band.  The end was nice and heavy with Eluveitie, Soilwork, and Lamb of God.  From Lamb of God we went to Neil Young in that typical extreme contrasting style that TSORR is known and loved for.  Thanks for listening, please share the podcast with anyone who may be interested and you can contact TSORR on the website or Facebook page.     Artists featured:  Butchering the Beatles, Guns ‘n' Roses, Paradox, Ozzy Osbourne, Dead City Ruins, Texas Hippie Coalition, Phil X and the Drills, Scorpions, The Pretty Reckless, Herman Frank, Alter Bridge, The Gaslight Anthem,   Billy Idol, The Rolling Stones, Joe Lynn Turner, Iron Allies, Iron Maiden, Rammstein, Metallica, Queensrÿche, Raven, Cold Chisel, Overdrivers, Joe Bonamassa, Jasper Dan, Ross Harding, L.A.
