We talk to Phil Soussan - Bassist, Songwriter & Producer. It would have been hard to predict the musical journey that Phil Soussan would take from being born and raised in London to being thrust into the Hard Rock spotlight of the 1980s, relocating to the USA as part of the Ozzy Osbourne band and being responsible for the huge hit single 'Shot In The Dark'. Phil has walked steadily and thoughtfully throughout his career making choices that felt right and continue to this day as bassist for Last In Line and a continual flow of production and performance roles. Special thanks to Affinity Photo - The hottest photo editing software on iPad, Mac & PChttps://affinity.serif.com/photoIntro Music by Johnny Monacohttps://www.johnnymonaco.com Incidental Music by Night Fires Please visit The 80s Video Shop Patreon Page to find out how you can help grow our very own 80s Video Shop. https://www.patreon.com/80sVideoShop

In wrapping up 2023 for the Scars and Guitars podcast, I take a closer look at the significant events and highlights defining the musical journey. Throughout the year, I attended a variety of live performances, including shows by Emperor, I Am Morbid, Incantation, Extreme, Living Colour, Hanabie, Archspire, Ingested, Triple Kill, Orpheus Omega, Halo Effect, and Misery, amongst many others. I discuss each show and summarise the performance and why it was noteworthy.  The podcast featured engaging conversations with prominent figures across heavy metal and beyond. I had the pleasure of hosting many Cradle of fIlth alums: Paul Ryan, Chris Bell, Nigel Wingrove, Mike Exeter, James McIlroy, and, notably, Sarah Jezebel Deva. There were conversations with Scott Edgar from Misery, Phil Soussan, Jesper Strömblad, the Tardy brothers from Obituary, Jason Bonham, Jamie Stinson AKA Astennu, Blitz from Overkill, Mille Petrozza, David Ellefson, Marc from Metal Church, Scott from Carnifex, Dave Coutts and Mark Dunn, Eric from The Amenta, Dave Haley and many, many more. I discuss why each episode is essential.  In terms of literature, my collection expanded with the addition of the Silverchair Book and Tana Douglas's roadie memoir. So I have something to say about these books.  Regarding musical releases, several notable albums caught my attention. There's a summary of each, and I explain why the alums are worthy.  Suffocation's "Hymns from the Apocrypha" highlighted Terrence Hobb's consistent musical prowess. Overkill's "Scorched" reaffirmed their enduring impact in the world of metal. "When Angels Kill" by Fifth Angel impressed with Ken Mary's drumming finesse. Incantation's "Unholy Deification" offered doom-tinged death metal at its best. Cadaver's "The Age of the Offended" featured a strong death metal statement with Ronni Le Tekrø. Sadus returned with "The Shadow Inside," showcasing Darren Travis's dedication. Wes Hauch's "Death is But a Door (EP)" demonstrated Wes Hauch's guitar virtuosity. Grand Cadaver's "Deities of Deathlike Sleep" delivered old-school Stockholm death metal. The Amenta's "Plague of Locus" showcased their take on classic covers. Werewolves and Faustian, featuring Matt Wilcock, offered creative and competent riff-heavy music. Additionally, I've compiled an eligibility list for future discussions, which includes Cyhra, Doro, Till the Dirt, Sylosis, Svalbard, Cryptopsy, Watain, Cavalera Brothers, Immortal, Alice Cooper, Cannibal Corpse, Shepherds Rein, Steven Wilson, AETERNUS, Aeons Abyss, Kataklysm, Ringworm, and Carnifex. In conclusion, 2023 was a year filled with remarkable music and insightful conversations about extreme music. I remain committed to providing a serious and thoughtful perspective on the genre, and I look forward to continuing this journey in the future. Thank you for being a part of the musical exploration! Have a great Christmas and even better 2024! Andrew McK.

"The Ultimate Sin" - 3:45 "Secret Loser" - 4:08 "Never Know Why" - 4:27 "Thank God for the Bomb" - 4:53 "Never" - 4:17 "Lightning Strikes" - 5:16 "Killer of Giants" - 5:41 "Fool Like You" - 5:18 "Shot in the Dark" (Osbourne, Phil Soussan) - 4:16 Ozzy Osbourne – voz Jake E. Lee – guitarra Phil Soussan – bajo Randy Castillo – batería Músicos adicionales Michael Moran – teclados Producción Producido por Ron Nevison Ingenieros adicionales – Martin White, Richard Moakes Remasterizado por Brian Lee y Bob Ludwig (edición de 1995) Listas de éxitos

HEAVY Music Interviews
At The Forefront Of Music With PHIL SOUSSAN From LAST IN LINE

HEAVY Music Interviews

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 6, 2023 20:43

Interview by Kris PetersWhen the genesis of a band consists of musicians paying homage to one of the greats, then you just know from the outset something special is brewing. But when that band comprises members from that same band they are paying musical respect to the end result is infinitely more grandiose and exciting.Starting life to finish recording and releasing music originally penned by Dio - by none other than drummer Vinny Appice, bassist Jimmy Bain, guitarist Vivian Campbell, and keyboardist Claude Schnell - Last In Line reunited along with vocalist Andrew Freeman to perform the Dio songs they originally recorded. The band released a studio album of original material without Schnell titled Heavy Crown in February 2016.From there Last In Line grew more into a band of their own volition, still performing music from that great era of rock, but adding a touch of their own spice to the mix to give it their own unique flavour. The band are preparing to release their third studio album, Jericho, on March 31 and on the back of lead single Ghost Town have promised more of the rock fuelled greatness for which Last In Line have continued to stage their name and reputation.Current bass player Phil Soussan joined HEAVY earlier in the week to talk about the new album and the enduring legacy of Dio."Very happy with the album," he nodded. "It's been a very long time coming because we had to put this together during a trying and difficult time - as I'm sure everybody can appreciate - and I think we came out with something that we're proud of. Actually, better than I thought it was going to be because we had no idea how it was going to be with all of the hurdles and restrictions that had been placed in front of us during the process of coming up with this record." "I think people who have listened to the second album noticed a definite progression from the first album," he continued. "Obviously, sadly, Jimmy Bain is no longer with us and he was very much part of that first album. I originally was asked to come in to finish some shows for which there had been some obligations from the first record and during that time we realised there was a great chemistry going on with this band. Then the second album came up and when that was written, obviously I brought in some different influences and so people would hear the progression from that first to the second album and I'd like to say that we continue that trajectory to where Jericho now is. So it's different from the second album and it's definitely an evolution from what we did on that record. I think it's really nailed certain things that make this band unique and different from others."In the full interview, Phil talks more about the new album, writing to a formula, continuing the legacy of one of the biggest rock outfits in history, recording the album live and what that means, the early days of Last In Line, his joining the band, his relationship with Jimmy Bain and how that influenced his decision to join Last In Line, touring plans and more.

Es conocido como The Madman (El loco), The Godfather of Heavy Metal (El padrino del heavy metal) y The Prince of Darkness (El príncipe de las tinieblas). Las canciones "Miracle Man", "Breaking All the Rules" y "Crazy Babies" fueron seleccionadas como sencillos. Además de “¨Let Me Hear You Scream”, los tracks confirmados del álbum son: “Diggin Me Down”, “Let it die”, “Soul Sucker”, “Fearless”, “I Want It All”, “Time”, “Crucify” y “I Love You All” Después del lanzamiento de Scream, Ozzy inició una gira mundial de 18 meses para promocionar su nuevo álbum. For a guy like me, who grew up in the early 80’s, the Dio era of Sabbath was some of the first true metal that I experienced, so being able to chat with Vinny was a high point in my career.Vinny has a new record hitting the streets with his band Last in Line which features his former band mate guitarist Vivian Campbell, bassist Phil Soussan (ex-Ozzy Osbourne) and vocalist Andrew Freeman (ex-Lynch Mob). Original Dio guitarist Vivian Campbell got the original Dio lineup together after the passing of Ronnie James Dio. It was Viv, drummer Vinny Appice, bassist Jimmy Bain, and they recruited Andrew Freeman on vocals. They played some shows, had a great time, decided to record an album of all new material, but before they could really tour - they lost Jimmy Bain unexpectedly. So they asked former Ozzy Osbourne bassist Phil Soussan to join the band, and they soldiered on. And today, Vivian Campbell and Phil Soussan tell that Last In Line story. Viv's also talking about the early days of Dio, his relationship with Ronnie James Dio, finding that trademark Dio sound, and why he left the band (under less than amicable circumstances). Plus, Phil's talking about Ozzy and what it was like being a member of that band. And you'll finally hear the true story of "Hear 'N Aid" - the heavy metal community's answer to "We Are The World."
