The COP commitments are critically scrutinised.  Even if all its  pledges were kept concerning GHG emissions, the tripling of renewable capacity, and energy efficiency  improvements - and that is a tall order - the world is heading for a 10% increase in emissions by 2030, instead of the 43% reduction required to keep global warming under the 1.5 degree threshold. Following further research post Cop28 I see no reason to change my central warning: prepare for survival on a degraded planet. A new attitude on the global scene is noted - climate defiance. Arguments for climate denial are also examined and dismissed as contrary to the evidence.  The episode ends with a beautiful song The Turning of the Year by Mark Dunn of The Bringers of Change whose music albums can be found on Spotify etc. and as CDs at www.fallingarecords.com This episode is being released a few days early in the breather between Christmas and New Year. In wrapping up 2023 for the Scars and Guitars podcast, I take a closer look at the significant events and highlights defining the musical journey. Throughout the year, I attended a variety of live performances, including shows by Emperor, I Am Morbid, Incantation, Extreme, Living Colour, Hanabie, Archspire, Ingested, Triple Kill, Orpheus Omega, Halo Effect, and Misery, amongst many others. I discuss each show and summarise the performance and why it was noteworthy.  The podcast featured engaging conversations with prominent figures across heavy metal and beyond. I had the pleasure of hosting many Cradle of fIlth alums: Paul Ryan, Chris Bell, Nigel Wingrove, Mike Exeter, James McIlroy, and, notably, Sarah Jezebel Deva. There were conversations with Scott Edgar from Misery, Phil Soussan, Jesper Strömblad, the Tardy brothers from Obituary, Jason Bonham, Jamie Stinson AKA Astennu, Blitz from Overkill, Mille Petrozza, David Ellefson, Marc from Metal Church, Scott from Carnifex, Dave Coutts and Mark Dunn, Eric from The Amenta, Dave Haley and many, many more. I discuss why each episode is essential.  In terms of literature, my collection expanded with the addition of the Silverchair Book and Tana Douglas's roadie memoir. So I have something to say about these books.  Regarding musical releases, several notable albums caught my attention. There's a summary of each, and I explain why the alums are worthy.  Suffocation's "Hymns from the Apocrypha" highlighted Terrence Hobb's consistent musical prowess. Overkill's "Scorched" reaffirmed their enduring impact in the world of metal. "When Angels Kill" by Fifth Angel impressed with Ken Mary's drumming finesse. Incantation's "Unholy Deification" offered doom-tinged death metal at its best. Cadaver's "The Age of the Offended" featured a strong death metal statement with Ronni Le Tekrø. Sadus returned with "The Shadow Inside," showcasing Darren Travis's dedication. Wes Hauch's "Death is But a Door (EP)" demonstrated Wes Hauch's guitar virtuosity. Grand Cadaver's "Deities of Deathlike Sleep" delivered old-school Stockholm death metal. The Amenta's "Plague of Locus" showcased their take on classic covers. Werewolves and Faustian, featuring Matt Wilcock, offered creative and competent riff-heavy music. Additionally, I've compiled an eligibility list for future discussions, which includes Cyhra, Doro, Till the Dirt, Sylosis, Svalbard, Cryptopsy, Watain, Cavalera Brothers, Immortal, Alice Cooper, Cannibal Corpse, Shepherds Rein, Steven Wilson, AETERNUS, Aeons Abyss, Kataklysm, Ringworm, and Carnifex. In conclusion, 2023 was a year filled with remarkable music and insightful conversations about extreme music. I remain committed to providing a serious and thoughtful perspective on the genre, and I look forward to continuing this journey in the future. Thank you for being a part of the musical exploration! Have a great Christmas and even better 2024! Andrew McK.

My name is Victor and I am a librarian at the Largo Public Library. Today I am going to talk about a nonfiction book that we have in the Spanish collection entitled Stranger: The Challenge of a Latino Immigrant in the Trump Era by Jorge Ramos. Synopsis: Jorge Ramos, an Emmy award-winning journalist, Univision’s longtime anchorman and widely considered the “voice of the voiceless” within the Latino community, was forcefully removed from an Iowa press conference in 2015 by then-candidate Donald Trump after trying to ask about his plans on immigration. In this personal manifesto, Ramos sets out to examine what it means to be a Latino immigrant, or just an immigrant, in present-day America. Using current research and statistics, with a journalist’s nose for a story, and interweaving his own personal experience, Ramos shows us the changing face of America while also trying to find an explanation for why he, and millions of others, still feel like strangers in this country. Opinion: If you are not a Univision viewer, you may not be familiar with Jorge Ramos. He is a news anchor and reporter. Ramos became famous in the Anglo-Saxon public for having been expelled from an important press conference during the Iowa Caucus season for asking candidate Donald J. Trump too many specific questions about the central element of his campaign: the wall. Ramos was born and raised in Mexico City, but moved to the United States to receive additional journalistic training and looking for the opportunity to be freer in his journalistic practice. He was lucky in television journalism, but he has succeeded and has done quite well. He has also become a US citizen. In the book, Ramos addresses the story of the press conference immediately. It is not as dramatic as it looked on television, because the future president allowed him to return to the press conference and made a private interview with Ramos later. This moment set a couple of precedents, however. Trump and the press have had a difficult relationship, to put it mildly. Another precedent was also established. As Ramos cooled his heels outside the press conference, a Trump supporter, wearing a red "Make America Great Again" hat, told Ramos: "Get out of my country!" Ramos informed him that he was a US citizen, just to be told: "Whatever!" For the first time in years, Ramos felt that he was really a stranger in his adopted country, hence the title of the book. Ramos builds on this latest incident for a while, discussing how the President's behavior and comments have encouraged many to act, feeling a change in the political climate. He also talks about civil rights inequalities for Hispanics, his own mostly positive experiences and how the current political climate is disorienting for a man who has lived more than half of his life in ...

So in a few weeks I’m getting married (yay!!!) and then honeymooning in Mexico. I’m looking for some good recommendations to read while at the beach. I’m a therapist and work mostly with adolescents so I’m always looking for novels with adolescent protagonists to better understand my clients. I would love to hear your recommendations for YA fiction. Bonus points for a book series and for having a romance subplot. Some YA books I’ve liked in the past are Little Fires Everywhere, Hunger Games series and the Selection. I’ve already read To All The Boys I’ve Loved before and don’t love the writing style (but loved the movie). Please no John Green. Thanks so much! –Emily 2. My husband’s birthday is in August and I’d love to get him a book this year. He’s not as big a reader as I am, but he enjoys it when the right book grabs him. Ready Player One and The Martian were two books that immediately struck me when I read them as being tailor-made for him, and he loved them both (back before either of them were movies). I next tried 11/22/63, because I thought he’d appreciate the interesting take on time travel. It took him over a year to finally get through because it just didn’t have that same gotta-read-it-NOW energy (though he assures me that he did enjoy it). I haven’t gifted him a book in a few years, since I haven’t found anything else that screamed “he needs to read this.” My own reading has slowed down quite a bit since we had kids, so the chances of my stumbling across his next RPO/Martian are slimmer than ever, and I’m hoping you can help me. In addition to the ones I mentioned, some of his favorite books are LOTR, the Eragon series, the Ender’s Game and Ender’s Shadow series, White Fang, and Call of the Wild. Thanks, love the show! –Charlie 3. Hi Jenn and Amanda! Long time listener to the podcast here. I love your show, though it has roughly doubled my TBR, so thanks for that. Lol My family is taking an epic Western road trip for two and a half weeks in July, driving from Ohio to Montana and Wyoming to visit Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks, as well as some smaller parks and sites along the way. I would love a recommendation for an audiobook that we could listen to together to keep kids off of personal technology for at least some of the trip. We haven’t really listened to audiobooks as a family before, and I’m running into some challenges in trying to choose. I am easy—read everything and anything. My husband typically prefers non-fiction, but could be flexible. My son is almost 13 and likes Science and history, both fiction and nonfiction. He does NOT enjoy most fantasy. My daughter is 9 and prefers fiction. She has a VERY active imagination and is easily scared by creepy things—for example, Harry Potter is too scary. Can you please help us find something fun to listen to that will get us all on the same page, so to speak, as we spend many hours together in the car? I’m not having success finding something that scratched everyone’s particular itch, but is still engaging and fun to listen to. –Erica 4. Hi Ladies! I love the podcast and am hoping you can help me out. I have two kids, an 8 year old boy and a 10 year old girl. When they were little, I used to read to them every night before bed but as they got older we stopped and I missed it. Recently I convinced them to start reading together again and for our first book I picked Refugee by Alan Gratz which has been good but intense and sad. Could you give us some suggestions for our next book? We’d like something more light hearted and fun. They’ve both read the Harry Potter books through book 5 and my son has read all the Land of Stories books. My daughter suggested Echo by Pam Munoz Ryan or Mr. Limoncello’s Library by Chris Grabenstein but she’s already read both of those and I’d like to read something new to all of us. Thanks for your help! —Heather 5. Over the last year I have slowly succeeded in turning my husband into a reader, now he wants to read books together. Last month we read Where The Crawdads Sing, it was his pick. It was a great experience, but now we are stuck trying to find a second book. He has suggested Educated or A Serial Killer’s Daughter, however, I am in my last semester of law school and already spend all day reading about tragedy and humans being horrible to other humans, I just cannot handle the tough stuff at the moment. I’ve tried to suggest a Bill Bryson book (he loved the adaptation of A Walk in the Woods) or some food micro histories (he is a major foodie) but he has turned them all down. His taste in books seems to be evolving rapidly and I am out of ideas. I’ll read anything that isn’t particularly emotionally taxing (Crawdads was in the grey area). Thanks for any help you can provide! In the last year he has read: Stephen King, Michael Crichton, The Martian, Ready Player One, World War Z, the Game of Thrones series, and a David Attenborough memoir. –Michelle 6. Hello! I adore books where the language usage or the writing format is as important to the story as the story itself. Books I’ve loved are The Wake by Paul Kingsnorth (where the author writes in his version of Middle English), Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn (where the story is told through letters by people who aren’t allowed to use certain letters of the alphabet), and Pale Fire by Vladimir Nabokov (where the novel is about a poem but the actual story is told primarily through the footnotes of the poem analysis). I’ll read any genre or subject matter, but please don’t recommend S. by JJ Abrams because that’s already on my shortlist TBR, or Finnegan’s Wake because I don’t know if I’ll ever be ready to attempt it.

This time around, we're taking a look at Ella Minnow Pea, a novel of letters by Mark Dunn. Epigraph We’re here on episode number 5 with Liberty Hardy, contributing editor at Book Riot and co-host of the All the Books! podcast. In addition to this LibSyn landing page, you can find us on Tumblr or stream the episode on iTunes and Stitcher. Follow us on Twitter at @drunkbookseller for updates, book recs, and general bookish shenanigans. Bitches in Bookshops Our theme music is awesome. Bitches in Bookshops comes to us with permission from Annabelle Quezada. Introduction   [0:30] In Which We Drink PBR and Discuss ALL THE BOOKS Coming Out in October In addition to her Book Riot work, Liberty is a roaming bookseller, former bookseller at RiverRun Bookstore in New Hampshire, judge for Bookspan’s Book of the Month Club, volunteer librarian, and self-proclaimed velocireader. Drink of the Day: Pabst Blue Ribbon. Yes, that PBR. Originally posted by uponfurtherreview-mark Emma’s reading Naked Economics: Undressing the Dismal Science by Charles Wheelan, and A Wild Swan: And Other Tales by Michael Cunningham Kim’s reading Phoebe and her Unicorn by Dana Simpson, My Fight/Your Fight by Ronda Rousey, The Mark and the Void by Paul Murray, and Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert. Liberty’s reading Mrs. Engels by Gavin McCrea, Twain’s End by Lynn Cullen, and Monsters: The Hindenburg Disaster and the Birth of Pathological Technology by Ed Regis. October is a very exciting month for books, amiright? Now she talks about books on the interwebz at Book Riot and doesn’t have to wear pants, which seems like a pretty sweet deal to me. Originally posted by nevadatrek If you’re not listening to Liberty’s podcast every week, you should. Like, stop reading this and go listen to All the Books! instead. We’ll wait.  Want to read like a bookseller? You can score advanced digital copies of books from NetGalley and Edelweiss. Learn more about Edelweiss here. Fun Fact: The average person reads 215 words per minute. Liberty reads 536 words a minute. How do you match up? Liberty only sleeps 3 to 4 hours a night. So, that’s a thing. Originally posted by redbullmediahouse Chapter II   [31:30] In Which Gary Shteyngart Writes a Successful Blurb, A Giant Crate of Books Washes Up On Liberty’s Desert Island,  Liberty’s fav local bookstore haunt is Water Street Bookstore in Exeter, NH. She also “accidentally” bought a bunch of books from Small Beer Press in the middle of the night (including The Liminial War by Ayize Jama-Everett and Kalpa Imperial by Angélica Gorodischer, translated byUrsula K. Le Guin). And she gives a big shout out to Sherman’s Books in Portland, ME and their store manager Josh Christie who, spoiler alert, is our next guess on Drunk Booksellers! Liberty’s a judge for Bookspan’s Book of the Month Club. Sounds rad. Liberty’s wheelhouse: anything compared to Kurt Vonnegut or The Secret History by Donna Tartt We talk blurbs. Gary Shteyngart blurbs everything, including this gem about Sloane Crosley’s new novel: “The Clasp reads like The Goonieswritten by Lorrie Moore.” It’s kinda brilliant. Liberty’s Desert Island Books: The Westing Game by Ellen Raskin, The Giant’s House by Elizabeth McCracken, The Known World by Edward P. Jones, The Secret History by Donna Tartt, The Sorrows of a Young Werther by Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe, My Name is Asher Levby Chaim Potok  Station Eleven Books: Blood Meridian: Or the Evening Redness in the West by Cormac McCarthy, Pat the Bunny by Dorothy Kunhardt, a Charles Portis book other than True Grit Wild Book: Calvin & Hobbes by Bill Watterson. That’s probably cheating… Originally posted by gifsboom Chapter III   [42:45] In Which We Make Authors Awkward with Our Literary Tattoos Go to Handsell: Ella Minnow Pea: A Novel in Letters by Mark Dunn, The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon by David Grann, The Devil in the White City: Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair That Changed America Trade Book by Erik Larson Impossible Handsell: The Talented Mr. Ripley by Patricia Highsmith,Tampa by Alissa Nutting Liberty’s Literary Tattoos include:  “What a punishing business it is simply being alive.” -from The Little Stranger by Sarah Waters “Because it is bitter, And because it is my heart.” -from ”In the Desert” Stephen Crane Goodbye Blue Monday Bomb from Breakfast of Champions by Kurt Vonnegut Baba Yaga Chicken Leg House from Hellboy Juice Box w/ Drink Umbrella from The Tick Last Book Gifted: M Train by Patti Smith Liberty has very literary cats. From Jewish tradition somewhere in Eastern Europe comes this charming and inspiring tale about... well, charming and inspiring tradition. As popularized by the picture book of the same name by Phoebe Gilman, this story tells of a gift made by a grandfather for a grandchild (in Gilman's version, the child is a boy; in our version, she isn't) -- and subsequently remade several times. It begins as a blanket, then as it is worn out, it is transformed into smaller and smaller items. In the process, it delivers a yarn (pun intended) about preserving one's heritage and being resourceful with available resources. We come to you from Chicopee, Masachusetts, near Springfield -- birthplace of basketball and Dr. Seuss (at nearly the same time). We wonder if Dr. Seuss was a bouncing baby boy. Anyway, we recently took a jaunt down to Connecticut, where we attended some live theatre. First, we saw the musical "LMNOP" in Chester, Connecticut. Adapted from the novel Ella Minnow Pea by Mark Dunn (a former college classmate of Dennis), the story is a sort of satirical modern fairy tale about a country where letters of the alphabet are banned one at a time, making it very hard for people to communicate. It's a fun story especially for language lovers, and the production was outstanding, with a cast of great singers. We also attended two performances in New London by the National Theatre of the Deaf, whom we've been wanting to catch in action for years. We saw two performances of the same show so we could carefully observe the sign language used by people who use it every day. They did an entertaining presentation of fables and comic skits. Like many of us in theatre, they make something from nothing -- or at least almost nothing. Happy Listening!Dennis (Narrator, Grandpa) and Kimberly (Narrator, Mother, Girl) * Read along as you listen to the story (Photo: Nathan Hale Schoolhouse in New London, CT)
