In the 63rd episode of The Metal Maniacs Podcast, hosts Jay Ingersoll and Modd dive headfirst into the brutal and unrelenting world of deathcore, a subgenre that has been both celebrated and maligned within the broader metal community. This episode is a special one for the duo, as they each pick their top five favorite deathcore bands, offering deep insights into what makes each band stand out, and why these bands have left such a significant mark on the genre. But that's not all—Jay and Modd also take the time to discuss plenty of other notable deathcore acts, giving listeners a comprehensive look at the state of deathcore today. The episode kicks off with a brief history of deathcore, tracing its origins back to the mid-2000s when metalcore bands started incorporating death metal elements into their music. Jay and Modd discuss how this fusion led to the creation of a genre that combines the breakdown-heavy intensity of metalcore with the guttural vocals, blast beats, and complex riffing of death metal. They also touch on the controversy that has surrounded deathcore since its inception, with some purists rejecting it as a watered-down version of death metal, while others embrace it as a legitimate evolution of the genre. With the stage set, Jay and Modd each reveal their top five deathcore bands, starting with their fifth picks and working their way up to their all-time favorites. As they go through their lists, they offer detailed commentary on each band, discussing their favorite albums, standout tracks, and the impact each band has had on the genre. As the episode continues, Jay and Modd reveal the rest of their lists, with Jay showcasing his love for bands like Despised Icon, known for their relentless aggression and technical prowess, and And Hell Followed With, one of the pioneers of the genre whose influence can still be felt in modern deathcore. Throughout the discussion, Jay and Modd share personal anecdotes about their experiences with these bands, whether it's seeing them live, discovering their music for the first time, or how their albums have influenced their own musical tastes. In addition to their top five picks, Jay and Modd take the time to discuss several other deathcore bands that deserve recognition. They talk about how bands like Carnifex, Chelsea Grin, and Oceano have each contributed to the genre in their own unique ways, whether it's through their relentless touring schedules, their ability to incorporate new elements into their music, or their staying power in a scene that has seen many bands come and go. The episode also touches on the future of deathcore, with Jay and Modd speculating on where the genre might go next. They discuss how newer bands are pushing the boundaries of what deathcore can be, incorporating elements from other genres like black metal, djent, and even electronic music. The hosts express their excitement for the future, noting that while deathcore has had its ups and downs, the genre continues to evolve and attract new fans. Jay and Modd wrap up the episode by encouraging listeners to check out the bands discussed and to explore the wider world of deathcore. They remind fans that while the genre may not be for everyone, it has a passionate and dedicated following for a reason. Whether you're a longtime deathcore fan or just getting into the genre, this episode of The Metal Maniacs Podcast offers something for everyone—a deep dive into the bands that have defined deathcore and a celebration of the music that continues to push the boundaries of extreme metal. As always, Jay and Modd invite listeners to share their own favorite deathcore bands and albums, and to join the conversation on social media. With their signature blend of humor, insight, and passion for the music, Jay and Modd once again deliver an episode that's sure to resonate with metal fans of all stripes. Welcome back metal heads to a new episode of the great metal debate podcast. Did you honestly believe that I, Xander wouldn't talk about the new Dying Fetus album Make Them Beg For Death? Of course I'm going to review the shit out of this one. Those of you who don't know me personally, I am a humongous fan of Dying Fetus and have been since I was 16 years old. I'm 32 now so do the math. That's half of my life! The very first song I ever heard by them was "One Shot, One Kill" from their Stop At Nothing album. But the very first CD I ever bought by them was their 2007 record War Of Attrition. I still know every word to the song "Homicidal Retribution". But my favorite release of theirs was their 2011 compilation CD Infatuation With Malevolence which included both of their early 1993-1994 demos Infatuation With Malevolence and Bathe In Entrails along with some live tracks. I had also purchased their remastered re-release of their debut Purification Through Violence which has one of my top favorite songs by them "Raped On The Altar". 5 years ago, I had pre-ordered their previous album Wrong One To Fuck With and received the CD + T-shirt bundle in the mail a whole week before the release date. In case you're wondering, I chose the Die With Integrity shirt which has the crossed bloody axes on it. It is just one of my 3 Dying Fetus shirts and you bet your ass I scored the Grotesque Impalement hoodie from the merch table last time I saw them live 2 years ago. I'm going to be seeing them live for the 7th time next month when they play with Despised Icon. I'm fucking stoked! You know what, I can gush about this band literally all day long but I've been stalling so let's get into this review. A few months ago, I heard the singles put out for this album and the first one was "Compulsion For Cruelty" and then they put out "Unbridled Fury". Being completely honest here, when I first heard these songs I didn't care for them much. My theory as to why was because I was still working 2 full-time jobs and was running on less than 4 hours of sleep and I didn't listen to them on headphones to make the audio quality better. At the time, they were largely forgettable. In fact, I completely forgot about that song "Feast of Ashes". But listening to all 3 of those songs again in my brand new car that I just got last month on a great stereo system and clear speakers, it made me change my mind and now I think those songs kick serious ass! Trey Williams is just as fast and precise with each drum he blasts away at, Sean Beasley continues to shred on that bass, John Gallagher still bashes your head in with groovy chug riffs and assaults your eardrum with those signature bullfrog croaking style vocals. In fact, John Gallagher is my favorite death metal vocalist. Everything fans love about Dying Fetus is all here on this fucking crushing album! I have decided that I won't sit here and name off all the tracks like I usually do but I have 2 album reviews I'm recording today along with an additional busy day after this. But I will reveal my favorite song. It's called "Undulating Carnage". The whole song is peak Dying Fetus material and I will be just a little heartbroken they don't play this live next month. Despite all my praise, I will say that it's a fucking phenomenal record but at the same time, not my favorite. I say that because I have no real favorite Dying Fetus album. It's true, I don't have a favorite Dying Fetus album. I think they're all great. Yeah, yeah I said earlier in this review that the Infatuation With Malevolence compilation CD had their best content but it wasn't part of their main discography. If we're talking about official full-lengths here, I think it's a perfect fit for everything this band has put out over the last 20 years through Relapse Records. I'm going to rate this a spectacular 9.5/10. Definitely go support the hell out of this band, go see them live, buy their merch and crank their music as loud as you can!

Join Alex and I as we chat before he literally has to finish packing and catch a plane for Despised Icon's European Tour. We talk about aging technology and how a lot of times there's nothing really wrong with the old thing, we just tend to move on. That led way to discussing how bands now a days have the tools and resources to learn how to be better musicians than Alex and others of our age had to figure it out through trial and error. We talk about the beginnings of the Deathcore genre, how the Despised Icon guys were one of the first to start using the term, and printing it on merch, but not THE first to coin the phrase, and how it was trying to get on tours when you're not really shown love in either of the scenes you're putting together for not being enough of one or the other. We also talk about Alex's transition in life to working in the hospitality field and how he's found success doing that and much more in this chat with the Despised Icon frontman. 20 years. What a ride it's been for Canadian-based deathcore stalwarts Despised Icon. Frontman Alex Erian sits with us to reflect on the personal journey he has endured since 2002. There's a feeling of nostalgia when looking back on a band that has been around for 2 decades, so much that the latest release “Deterre,” is an EP that was recorded back in 2004. In a way, it's as if this was also a feeling of re-ignition for Despised Icon, as they begin this new chapter of their decorated timeline. This EP is also a salute to the die hard fans, while bringing in the newcomers who have been exposed to the modern hardcore genre. A big part of what makes this unit stand out is the presence of two frontmen, two vocalists, and Alex talks about his chemistry with fellow bandmate Steve Marois and the unique challenges on composing songs that gameplan around the two. We also talk to Alex about his own Montreal-based brewery called Messorem Bacitorium Inc., from how it started to where it is today, what the future holds for this growing company. Plenty to unpack in this episode with Alex, tune in now and be sure to buy and stream the new EP, “Deterre,” out now worldwide via Nuclear Blast Records.Stay connected with Despised Icon, visit: https://www.despisedicon.com/, https://www.facebook.com/despisedicon/ and https://www.instagram.com/despisedicon/Stay connected with IUF, visit: https://interviewunderfire.com/

Welcome back to The Great Metal Debate Podcast. Today we're looking at one of the most extreme bands - the Chinese slamming brutal death grind band The Dark Prison Massacre with their 3rd full-length studio record titled Triple Insanity. Let's just say that if you're a fan of bands like Torsofuck and Gutalax, you'll enjoy the sickness of this band. The vocals are among the nastiest I've ever heard. That churning sink garbage disposal sound is exactly the type of disgusting gutturals you're looking for in this subgenre. Triple Insanity unfortunately does not begin that way due to the first track being very skippable. All you're missing is the intro album title track which is just an old recording of some guy speaking Mandarin. I obviously have no clue what he is saying but it doesn't matter. "Stop Slut Humiliation" begins with a very long pig squeal followed by more pig squeals. There is a slow downtuned guitar chugging part accompanied by some very rhythmic gutturals. There is even a 3rd act of the song where the music has that stop and start djenty feel about it and you can clearly hear each drum beat. As for the song's conclusion it ends with some filthy yet groovy gurgling vocals over a slam riff which makes the perfect breakdown. "Watch Your Life" starts with a washed out chug riff but fades in with a more crisp and polished sound. Of course there is more 'barfing in the shitter with a microphone next to the toilet bowl' vocals where that came from. If you're into this sort of thing then The Dark Prison Massacre will certainly be up your alley. If it seems like I'm insulting this band then I must tell you that I'm actually praising it. The grosser this type of music sounds, the better. At the 0:38 mark, there is a sound that the vocalist makes that sounds just like it was processed with a synthesizer. "Ghost Island Dalitas" runs at a slower tempo musically but at least you still get the possessed crocodile type of vocals. "True Metal Bastards" gives us some more of those beloved demonic pig squeals that will remind you a lot of Despised Icon. Imagine the perfect blend of quality deathcore with a slight cyber porno grind infusion like Sperm Swamp. "Dead Hand System" and "Scam Pioneer are other fantastic examples of both Zeyu and Dongda's impressive guttural capabilities. "Ghost Island Dalits (Snow Sedim)" is a remix of the song you heard earlier that has a different sound mix instrumentally and some of the vocals are either rearranged or are recorded in a slightly different pitch. There's also an operatic backing track on this edition as well. "No School Violence" is one of the more pig squeal infused tracks on this record and uses quite a bit more distortion is some areas. The final track on this album “Cerebral Failure Projection” is another banger, and I have not complaints about it. All I can really say about it is that it's the same kind of stuff you'd expect from this band. I do have some critiques. I've always disliked it when a band feels the need to put two versions of the same track on the same album, even if it is a slight remix. I personally believe that a band should choose one version of the song they like best to put on a new album, and then if they have a remix or another version of the song then they should release it later. I didn't enjoy this one as much as the previous record, or the album before it, but I'm still giving it a rating of 7 ½ out of 10. This album is definitely not for everybody; this band is not for everyone. But if you are looking to scratch that itch as far as nasty vocals, gutterals, and pig squeals, then this is probably what you're looking for. You can buy their digital albums on Bandcamp.com. And as for this newest release Triple Insanity, you can listen to it on Amazon Music. If you really want to support this band by buying their merch, be sure to check out Fat Tub Of Lard Records.

Ringing in the new year the guys start off with the remaster of some classic early 2000s deathcore! We made a little bit of a mistake on this one and ended up knocking out two albums, so enjoy the ride!
Alex Erian & Marc-André Filion of Messorem Bracitorium & I have a conversation about how they coped with 2020, the brewery's identity, their 1st brews, the soundtrack to their youths, managing the their success, creating unique art under pressure, their 2 year anniversary, filling the void & their hangover cure. Throughout this chat, Marc-André was drinking Messorem Bracitorium's "SINGLE TOUCH: CITRA" the 6.5% ABV 100% Citra DDH IPA, Alex was drinking their "Il ÉTAIT UNE FOIS : SÉCHERESSE" the 5% Helles Lager while I enjoyed their "ONE HUNNA: SIMCOE" 100% Simcoe 8.2% ABV DDH DIPA. This killer brew poured out with a light yellow veil, smashed sweet honey melon on the nose & slapped an enjoyable bitter mandarin fueled finish. Welcome to our unofficial Canadian Metal Month. That's right...by some freak accident, we managed to start off a HUGE appreciation to our Metalheads up north! - We're kicking it off with Obey The Brave, also known as Alex Erian's (Despised Icon) "other band", and what a band it is. Alex really gets to shift gears here and delve into different vocal stylings that he might not get a chance to get into with Despised Icon. - Melodic Hardcore, Hardcore, Metalcore...whatever you call it, they're heavy, catchy, riffy, moshy, and just flat out awesome. We know that they may not be on a lot of people's radar just yet, so if you've never heard them...go listen to them now! - We also get into a couple RIPD's, COVID breaking up bands, The Ghost Inside's troubles, summer vibes, nostalgia, the value of time, and a lot more. - As always, please Rate, Review, Like, Subscribe & Follow. - Theme Song: Godhammered

For ep. 35 we discussed what we've been listening to, reviewed the new album "Beast" from Despised Icon, and spent most of the episode playing and discussing our favorite parts in metal that groove hard. We didn't just stay within the "groove metal" sub genre and instead went through a lot our favorite parts in songs that get your head/body moving and had some groove to it. The episode was initially about 2.5 hours long so we had to edit it down and took out our normal metal news section. If you want to hear the stuff we got rid of stay tuned because we will be posting an interview episode with the New York Hardcore band Backtrack very soon and will have our metal news section there. Send us your favorite grooves, opinions on the album review, and any other thoughts at the links below. You can also listen to us on the iTunes podcast app, Stitcher, or most other podcast apps. www.Facebook.com/Intothecombine www.Twitter.com/Intothecombine www.Instagram.com/Intothecombine Email:Thecombine586@gmail.com

Are you the only metal head in your family? You're not alone! I mean, technically you are but at least you can hear us complain about it too. Here's to being in charge of the stereo in the family van. This week we talked about the move Megadeth made to acquire Dirk from Soilwork as their fulltime drummer, Dillinger Escape Plan are playing Gwar-B-Q, and Despised Icon time travels back to the 90's. Both Life Of Agony and Red Fang are on their way to new records, and we are now witnessing the birth of the first ever deathcore amphitheater tour! Ringworm made it into a Pixar movie. The band, not the parasite. Mike Portnoy says he won't reunite with Dream Theater, and in this week's news, water is wet. Thanks for listening!
Alex Erian, vocalist for recently reactivated deathcore pioneers Despised Icon, guests on the podcast this week. In our exclusive interview we delve into the reasoning behind the band breaking up and moving on and then, after a short time, making the decision to come back together. We talk about their new record Beast and how recording with two bands at one time creates headaches for him. We find out there might actually be a hip hop beat behind one of the songs on the new record and about how they've been able to retain their fanbase despite what looked like the end for the band. Maybe all bands -- and couples -- need to break up and get back together. We also talk about the recent editorial on Decibel about "SJWs" in metal that turned the metal internets into a firestorm. With opinions ranging from "SJWs are tearing our scene apart" to "nazi metalheads must die," is there a real discussion going on right now, or are we all just picking sides while trying to reinforce whatever we believe already and refusing to hear anything that might challenge those opinions? Is there a real problem, a perceived problem, or are we missing the target altogether? Songs: Despised Icon – "The Aftermath" Be'lakor – "Roots to Sever"

Maiden rocked it last week at the Tacoma Dome, and we discuss their new beer! Despised Icon, Gojira, Nails, and Defeated Sanity all have incredibly heavy sounding jammers on the way. Taste them here. We discuss how it sucks when bands print crappy quality merch, Chris Barnes and Six Feet Under returning with a new edition of Graveyard Classics, and Lamb of God goes GOLD with Ashes of The Wake! Metallica ponies up $50,000 towards the Crime Stoppers fund for the fan who went missing after one of their shows, and we provide more ‘insight' behind the release strategy of the new Metallica record. This episode concludes with Brutal Poetry: Too Hot For Radio – featuring Intestinal Disgorge – Scrotal Skin Ski Mask. m/ See you next week!
This week's show is a bit of a stylistic roller coaster, featuring performer/songwriter John Southworth, Quebec-based hardcore outfit Obey the Brave, and Kingston rock quintet The Glorious Sons. Southworth is set to drop his latest LP, a double album called Niagara that's divided into a Canadian and American side, at the end of September. We speak about how the album took shape as well as some of his other artistic endavours and how they correlate. Obey The Brave, comprised of ex members of Blind Witness and Despised Icon, released their second full-length effort Salvation mid-September. We speak with vocalist Alex Erian about the band's progress since their debut, Young Blood, as well as the current state of the hardcore scene. Finally, the boys of Glorious Sons are fresh off the release of their debut full-length The Union, produced in tandem with John-Angus MacDonald of The Trews and the one and only Gavin Brown (Billy Talent, Three Days Grace). We get the scoop on the band's success thus far and some of their upcoming plans.
One afternoon over Skype I chatted with the vocalist from Obey The Brave (and previous vocalist of Despised Icon) Alex Erian about misconceptions of himself, the intricacies of Montreal culture and his insane birth. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://news.iheart.com/podcast-advertisers
